Though Lovers Be Lost pt. 3
She could hear the faint howl of a cool breeze blowing around her while her olfactory senses picked up the subtle aroma of jasmine wafting through the air on the wings of the breeze.
Although the air was cool she wasn't uncomfortably cold as her skin was kissed by the scented air. She was peaceful and yet she knew something wasn't right, something was missing.
Her eyes fluttered open to see her surroundings. She lay in a feathery soft bed of pillows and silky bedding. Above her, a web of gossmore netting wrapped around the entire bed and billowed slightly.
Bonnie sat up throwing her legs over the side of the bed. She stood up, noticing that she was wearing a long flowing black nightgown and was bare feet. She slowly moved towards the mirror hanging on a concrete wall. She chuckled to herself because she suddenly realized that the room was a tower with an opening that served as a window.
The room was right out of a fairy tale. But not just any fairy tale but her favorite story as a child, Esmeralda, the tiny witch of Lourdes. Esmeralda was a young powerful witch imprisoned by a jealous evil witch queen.
Esmeralda was locked in the tower and her magic was suppressed by magical spells and dark objects that weakened and siphoned her magic. The lonely little witch waited for her true love and when he came to her after many years of waiting, he was unable to set her free.
He could not break her bonds nor could he counter the magic that held her captive, but his love for her was so strong and so true that he vowed that he would conquer the evil queen, forcing her to set the young witch free or he would die trying. He and his men led a daring campaign against the witch, but they were savagely defeated.
The young warrior, mortally wounded, found his way back to the tower and to his love, only to die in her arms, but with his dying breath he told her, "Forever I will love you and forever I will wait for you in eternity. Find me my love..."
The young witch was filled with such rage and sorrow that it is said that blood moons were made from the tears she shed and her pitiful cries gave voice to the banshee's wail.
Love and hate equally matched, rivaled within her tiny frame, igniting her magic, causing it to explode out of her in such a fierce pulse of power that the tiny witch laid waste to the tower, turning it to rubble and the dark objects to ash.
Esmeralda rained down death and carnage on the evil witch and all who followed her, taking possession of her estate, lands and wealth. She became the protector of her small village where she mourned her lost love, never marrying, always staying true to her young warrior until her death.
Bonnie always loved the tragic love story. Its sad ending felt real yet romantic, giving her hope that although lovers could be parted, one day they would be reunited. As a small child, Bonnie hoped one day she would find her true love. And she did, in Klaus Mikaelson.
She looked at her reflection in the mirror, her chocolate tendrils were now platinum and her green eyes seemed more vibrant and almost metallic. Her breasts were full and her belly had a bit of a bump.
She smoothed her hands over her belly now remembering the wonderful news she had to share with her family. Suddenly everything came back to her.
She remembered what she did to Kai and Elena, and why. She remembered offering Damon as a sacrifice to her husband. Oh, Klaus...her love...she brought him back…it was all for him...she needed him.
"You are no prisoner. You may go as soon as you wish."
Bonnie was so intent on focussing on her reflection she hadn't noticed the form behind her. She redirected her gaze to see the woman behind her in the mirror.
Turning around, Bonnie looked at the woman, appearing several years older than herself, "Why am I here? Where is here for that matter?'
"You are in the in-between and you are here because you chose to be here." The woman said in a motherly fashion. She looked familiar to Bonnie but she couldn't place her, but she felt drawn to her.
"Who are you? And what do you mean?" Bonnie questioned, confused and a bit tired already.
"Sit," she mentioned to a chair that was not there before, then sat down in the chair next to it. "Bonnie, this is a construct made from your mind. It could have been any place, your childhood bedroom, the bedroom you share with Klaus or even your library, but your mind chose this one setting. The place where Esmeralda was trapped. The setting of your favorite bedtime story. Hmm...I wonder why." She said as she tilted her head and tapped her chin.
"Who are you," Bonnie inquired, almost desperately. She was so confused, but she was distracted trying to figure out who this woman was. She had smooth caramel skin and raven black long hair with streaks of gray. Her eyes were a mossy green and frame was tall and thin, but with womanly curves. She wore a white wide leg, halter top jumper with a sash that tied in the front and white heeled sandals.
Bonnie was very impressed with her style, she was a beautiful woman with classic features and a regal stance and posture. She moved, walked, talked and sat like a queen.
The woman sat quietly as Bonnie surveyed her, she wasn't put out by her scrutiny, just amused. "I am Qetsiyah, the mother of the Bennett witches." She chuckled seeing the look on Bonnie's face.
Bonnie quickly stood up then clumsily bowed as she stuttered, "I..am..I'm so...sorry, I meant no -"
Qetsiyah waved her hand and smiled, "Nonsense, none of that is necessary. Now sit back down and talk with me," she politely instructed Bonnie.
"Now, Let's get down to business. Why are you still here my dear?"
Bonnie stared at the kind and beautiful face, her mouth open to speak, but said nothing. Then she looked down at her hand threaded together in her lap. "I'm afraid to face him. What I did…," she whispered, not finishing her statement.
"He is waiting for you, why are you afraid to go back? Are you ashamed of what you have done?"
Bonnie quickly shook her head, lifting her head to look into loving eyes, "NO. I would do it again, a thousand times over if I had to….but now he will know, they all will know the power, the rage, the monster that is inside of me." Bonnie sadly admitted.
"Esmeralda or Esme as she was once called...yes, she was a real person," she smiled when she saw Bonnie's eyes widen in disbelief, "Thought herself a monster for all that she had done in the name of love and vengeance. But she was not and the measure of destruction she levied was far worse in scope and stature."
"She was a faithful young woman, kind, protective and fierce, but she was lonely and lived in solitude, never forgetting her lost love Erick. What is not told in the stories is that for most of her life she was tormented and cruelly treated and locked in that tower. Her youth was stolen from her and her family snatched away and murdered."
"A sweet child that should have been protected and cared for and yet the person she most trusted betrayed her. Hecate, in her wisdom and compassion, promised to make things right."
"She swore that for always and forever, throughout time and space Esme and Erick would find their way back to each other, in different variations and iterations, and live the lives they were deprived of all those years ago."
"It is not mere chance that you felt connected to that story and no coincidence that your powers mirror hers. And it is not mere chance that you and Klaus found each other. Bonnie, do you understand what I am saying?"
Bonnie slowly nodded, "I believe so."
Qetsiyah patted her hands, "Good. Go back. He is waiting for you and so is your family. "
Why? What made her so special that Hecate honored her so?" Bonnie inquired, truly humbled and intrigued.
Qetsiyah smiled as she stood taking Bonnie's hands and guiding her up as well. "It wasn't her, not entirely, but Erick. His dying vow, so true, given in love and utter devotion, touched the heart of Hecate."
She guided Bonnie to the bed and helped her to lay back down. Smiling down she smoothed her hair and kissed her forehead. "Never fear who you are and what you are. The power you possess is your birthright to use as you will. It should be respected and feared by your enemies."
"You are no monster and Klaus' love for you is as strong and fierce as Erick's was for and Klaus deserve every happiness and all the love that this world can give you and much more. Now close your eyes and rest."
For three and a half weeks Klaus waited for Bonnie to open her eyes. He lovingly bathed her and brushed her hair; he talked with her, telling her of his days; he read poetry, sonnets and epic tales to her; and he listened to her heart beat, which was steady even though it was faint.
The Mikaelsons, for their part, also kept watch over her when Klaus needed rest or had to deal with business matters. Stefan would tell Bonnie of his plans to properly propose to Rebekah, while Rebekah would regale the sleeping beauty with humorous tales of her latest fashion conquest, having out bid some rich debutant out of several wonderful fashion pieces.
Esther and Freya, at different times, would counsel with her on potions, spells and herbs while trying not to cry. Kol bemoaned his state of affairs with the wild and beautiful Davina, a seductive young witch that was more than a match for Kol's impish ways.
It was a lovely bright day as the birds chirped and sang out to each other and the faint scent of jasmine filled the room where Bonnie laid. Klaus sat slumped over with his hand on her belly and his head resting.
"You'll catch the worst crick in your neck and be a grumpy bear if you don't straighten up," Bonnie whispered with a smile as her hand ruffled his hair.
Klaus shot up with tears in his eyes, grinning wildly. "You came back to me." He breathed as he kissed her cheek. She smiled warmly at him, "I'm sorry I took so long," she muttered.
"It doesn't matter as long as you are with me now." Klaus proclaimed as he kissed her lips.
After the excitement and merriment over Bonnie's recovery ended and each family member had an opportunity to see her, Klaus moved her to their bedroom where they lay in each other's arms silently talking.
"When you have rested more we should have a family dinner to tell them of the news. That is before they figure it out on their own," Klaus chuckled as he held her tighter and she snuggled in closer.
Bonnie smiled, "Yes we should but I think I have rested long enough. Let's tell them tomorrow. I don't want to wait." Bonnie suggested.
"Whatever you want my love," Klaus said as he kissed her temple.
Klaus stood up from the table holding his wine glass, with a huge grin on his face as he looked down lovingly at Bonnie. "We were going to tell everyone weeks ago but...well things got complicated," Klaus announced to the family that were very curious and all ears.
"Anyway, now that Bonnie is awake and things are as they should be, let's drink to the newest addition to the Mikaelson family, set to arrive in seven months."
"Congratulations," everyone said in unison as the news sank in. Suddenly everyone was up from their seats, hugging the expectant couple while laughing and smiling.
"I am so happy for you both," Mikael said to Klaus as he clapped his shoulder.
Rebekah gushed, "I can't wait to be an aunty to a precious little girl," as she hugged and kissed Bonnie.
"It will be a boy, of course," Kol piped in with his cocky-sure-as-shit grin, as he poured himself a glass of bourbon.
"What makes you think that," Freya questioned with a smile.
"Well mother has more sons than daughters, love," Elijah theorized, siding with Kol.
Esther shook her head, "That doesn't mean anything," she turned to Bonnie, "What do you want my dear," she questioned.
Bonnie looked around her, watching her family, listening to their banter, hearing their laughter and the happiness they all shared. She was truly happy. This is what she always wanted and the baby was the icing on top, whether it was a boy or girl.
Klaus waited to hear her answer, he was curious about her answer. He knew that he would be happy with either a boy or girl but if truth be known, he was hoping that they would have a beautiful little girl that looked just like his lovely wife.
"It doesn't matter to me as long as the baby is happy and healthy," Bonnie expressed as her eyes locked with her handsome husband, both of them silently communicating their love for each other.
Klaus put me down," Bonnie giggled and squirmed as Klaus held her bridal style, walking casually through the streets of the French Quarter, making his way back to the abattoir.
"No and behave. From now on I am carrying you everywhere," he chuckled, "besides, I love having you in my arms," he said with a kiss.
She tightened her arms around him and laid her head on his chest, enjoying the unique beating of his heart. Bonnie was beyond happy, she was totally content.
They had just come from their doctor appointment, she was twenty weeks and they just found out what the gender of the baby was. The news had both parents giddy with excitement and happiness.
Klaus decided they would go have lunch at Restaurant Rebirth to celebrate, which Bonnie was only too happy to agree to, they had her favorite dessert, beignets and after they could go window shopping. Klaus agreed as long as she didn't over do it.
After beignets and window shopping Bonnie was feeling tired, which gave Klaus a wonderful excuse to carry her, citing doctor's orders of taking it easy and getting plenty of rest. Klaus was emphatic on making sure she did just as she was told.
"How do you think everyone will take the news?" Bonnie softly asked, enjoying being held by Klaus.
"They will take it, like we Mikaelsons always take things, with dramatic flair, passionate frivolity and uncontained excessiveness. You know they will be waiting for us to get home. Probably standing guard, ready to pounce on us," he chuckled.
"Good, I can't wait to tell them." Bonnie beamed up at him.
Are you truly happy my love?" Klaus asked, a small part of him still insecure in his ability at being a good husband and father. He knew deep down that he was still the monster all other monsters feared, but for her and his family he strived to do better, to squelch his darker tendencies.
Truth be told there were still times when Damon's words haunted him and he worried he was living in a dream and would wake up at any moment. Even with Bonnie telling him about Esme and Erick, paranoia still plagued him.
She was the heart and soul of him and he would live a thousand lifetimes just to make her feel safe, happy and loved. He held his breath as he waited for her answer, stopping in his tracks, causing people walking around them to stop and redirect their steps.
"Klaus you have given me everything. I have a home, I am surrounded by people that love and appreciate me and that I love in return and call my family."
"I live in a city filled with magic, amazing music and wonderful food," she chuckled, thinking of all the beignets she had consumed. She continued, "But most of all I have you. Never doubt that you love me completely and thoroughly. I love you Niklaus Mikaelson for everything that you are, every part of you, just as you love every part of me," she said emotionally, staring into his eyes.
Suddenly his mouth took possession of hers, kissing her with so much passion that they almost forgot they were still in the middle of the sidewalk.
He stopped kissing her and with a smirk he vowed, "And tonight I will show you just how much I love every part of you my dear wife." Bonnie blushed as if everyone else around them heard him, but she reasoned to herself that one could never be too sure since people were supernaturals with hyper hearing.
As they continued walking, now about to round the corner to the gated entrance of their home, Bonnie asked, " So should we tell them all the news or leave something to surprise them with?"
"They're finally here," they heard as they entered the courtyard, Klaus smirked, being proved correct about them waiting for them. "We'll tell them about the twins first and leave them wondering about the gender," he whispered in her ear then lightly bit her earlobe and then kissed it.
Bonnie giggled, "You are terrible," she whispered back as she looked into his blue eyes, seeing all the love he had for her reflected back.
Yes, she was beyond happy, how could she not be with Klaus as her husband, a loving family and two sweet babies on their way very soon….to be loved and spoiled...a boy and a girl, and she had their middle names already picked out...Esme and Erick.
Indeed...life was good and this was only the beginning, she mused.
The End...?
