Free. She was free from being stuck under the rubble of the plane. Unfortunately, along with being free came an excruciating amount of pain. Lexie did everything in her power to not allow Mark to see how much pain she was in. This was their moment to just be with each other. If we get rescued, I'll likely need surgery Lexie thought. She didn't know what that surgery would entail, or how bad her injuries would be. So she wanted to have this time alone with Mark to say everything that she needed to say. "Hi," she replied, a small blush creeping onto her cheeks.
Mark smirked, rubbing his fingers over the red spots forming on Lexie's cheeks. "I still have that effect on you," he murmured, moving his right hand up to brush the stray hair away from her forehead. "I'm so glad that you're okay," he replied, his eyes glancing down to her lips before flickering back up to her eyes.
"It's all thanks to you. My hero," Lexie smiled, moving her hands from Mark's wrist up to his fingers. She laced her fingers through his, biting down on her lip. "Listen, Mark, I know… I know that you thought I was going to die, so I understand if you didn't…" she started, wanting to allow Mark an out. She knew emotions were heightened, and she didn't want him to feel as if he was trapped with the words he confessed hours before.
"Lex, no, stop," Mark interrupted, shaking his head adamantly. "I meant every word that I said. I want you. I need you. We are going to have a life together," he whispered, leaning down to press a soft kiss against her lips. Once she felt Mark's lips against hers, Lexie let a whimper escape from her lips. Her eyes fluttered closed as she applied pressure back against Mark's lips. "I love you," he whispered, pulling back a few seconds later.
Lexie offered Mark a smile, removing her hands from Mark's. She had waited months to feel Mark's lips back against hers. The familiarity of his lips still sent butterflies rushing through her stomach. She ran her fingers through her hair, feeling how much blood had dried on her brunette locks. "What was in the medical bag? My legs are really hurting," she whimpered, reaching down to rub her hand across her thigh.
Mark shrugged, getting up to retrieve the bag. "Let's see," he stated, unzipping the bag. There was gauze, wrap, a splint, band aids, and over the counter pain killers littered throughout the bag. "There's some medicine that you can take," Mark stated, walking back over to Lexie. On his way, he grabbed a new water bottle, unscrewing the cap. "Should we try to sit you up?" he questioned, sitting on the ground beside her.
"I'm scared," Lexie admitted, pushing herself up onto her elbows. "But, I suppose it's better now than later," she added, reaching one of her hands out for Mark's. Mark took her hand and pulled her into a sitting position. Lexie let out a gasp, eyes squinting shut at the pressure that radiated down her limbs. "C-Can you hold me up?" she asked, placing her palms flat on the ground to provide herself with some stability. Mark nodded, scooting over to sit behind Lexie. He placed his legs on either side of her, scooting as close to her as he could. Lexie reached for the water that was next to her, putting her hand out for the medicine that Mark was going to give her. Once she had it in her palm, she placed the pills into her mouth and swallowed them. She slowly drank the bottle of water, knowing that she still needed to stay hydrated.
"Lex?" Mark whispered after a few silent minutes, resting his head against her shoulder. He turned to place a kiss against cheek, wrapping his arms around her waist. He slipped his hands under shirt to feel her belly, wanting to examine how it felt. He was relieved when he didn't feel anything abnormal.
"Yeah?" she responded, craning her head to the side to look at Mark as best as she could.
"What do you want to do from here? I know you love me, and you know I love you, but how do you want to proceed?" Mark asked, rubbing soothing circles against her exposed skin.
"What do you want to do?" she shot back, a chill running through her body. She didn't know if she was cold from the weather, or if Mark's fingers on her were sending chills through her veins.
"If we're going to do this, I want us to do this right. I want us to be a proper couple. I want you to come home," Mark said softly, scared that what he said may push Lexie away. If her legs were working properly, he thought that comment may send her running for hills.
"I would like that," Lexie murmured, relaxing against Mark's chest. She always felt so safe in his arms, as if nothing could hurt her. She tried to control the butterflies in her stomach at the way Mark said "home". When Mark had gotten his apartment, she had been so hesitant to move in with him. It was such a big step for her, one that she wasn't sure if she was ready to make. She thought back to the memory of when they went to tour his apartment for the first time.
"This a two bedroom, two bathroom apartment. I think you'll really like the updates that they have done to this unit. And, the best part is, it's close to the hospital," Mark's realtor stated expertly, unlocking the door for him and Lexie. Lexie had agreed to go apartment hunting with Mark, though she made no promises that she would move in with him. She wanted to be a supportive girlfriend, though, and show Mark that she was really trying. Besides, if what Mark said was true, she may move in with him a few years down the road. "I'll give you two some time to look around. Come on down to the lobby once you're done."
Lexie looked around the room, surprised at all the updates that had been done. The kitchen was to the right, with state of the art appliances. There was an island in the middle of the kitchen with granite countertops. Cabinets lined the walls above the stove, providing ample storage space. On the left side of the apartment was the living room, which included a gas fireplace. There was plenty of space for furniture. The walls were a nice cream color, adorned with floor to ceiling windows. "This is lovely," Lexie murmured, her eyes scanning over the large living room and kitchen. "What do you think?" she questioned, walking into the kitchen.
"Yeah, it's nice," Mark agreed, following behind Lexie like a stray dog. "Just imagine what we could do in the kitchen" he whispered, spinning Lexie around in his arms. Backing her up against the fridge, Mark placed his lips against Lexie's. The sudden movement surprised the brunette, but she instantly melted against Mark's lips. She reached her arms up to loop around his neck, sliding her tongue gracefully against Mark's lips. He groaned, pressing his lower half against hers. His hands slid down to her butt, squeezing it playfully. Lexie squeaked against his lips, allowing Mark's tongue to slip into her mouth. Their tongues danced together with both of their breathing picking up. Against her better judgement, Lexie pulled back from Mark's enticing lips. "We can't," she breathed, playing with the ends of Mark's hair.
"Come on, live a little, Lex," he teased, trailing kisses down her cheek, jaw, and eventually neck. Mark nipped at a piece of skin against Lexie's collarbone, pressing kisses against it instantly. "Please?" he asked with a pout, kissing his way back up to her lips.
"Mark," she warned, slipping her hands down against his upper back. "If you get this place, we can christen it then," Lexie stated coyly, pressing a chaste kiss against Mark's lips. She slipped away from Mark, sliding over toward the hallway that led to the bedrooms. On the right hand side of the hallway, there were two doorways. The first one was a bathroom that had a large vanity accompanied by a bathtub. Moving out of that room, Lexie entered the first bedroom, surmising that it was the guest room. It was a decent size, and Lexie assumed that Mark would likely use it as his office. Lexie walked across the hall to the master bedroom, immediately noticing its large size. There was a large walk in closet, which led Lexie to laugh quietly. Mark did not have a large wardrobe at all, so she didn't know what he would do with all that closet space. Attached to the bedroom was an equally impressive master bathroom. There were double sinks, a Jacuzzi tub, and a state of the art walk in shower. Lexie's mouth fell open, not believing how nice this apartment was.
"You love it," Mark commented, slipping his arms around Lexie's waist.
"I do," she agreed, turning in his arms. "Maybe I should move in. Did you see that closet?" Lexie gasped, doing a small jump in the air. Mark rolled his eyes playfully, cocking his head to the side. "I would love for you to move in," he whispered, running his thumb against her bottom lip. Lexie shook her head, giggling, as she made her way back out to living area. Mark watched as Lexie strode out of the room, thinking about how enamored he was with this girl.
Lexie was pulled out of thoughts as she felt Mark's hands remove themselves from her skin, pulling her shirt back down. "You should get back to Arizona," Lexie sighed, trying her best to sit up. She didn't think that she would have the stamina or strength to make it to wherever Arizona was.
"We," Mark corrected, pulling Lexie's hair over one of her shoulders. "I'm not leaving you," he firmly stated, pushing himself to a standing position once he was sure Lexie was stable on her own. He went and grabbed one of the jackets Cristina had brought over, handing it to Lexie to put on. He slipped the medical bag's strap over his shoulders and grabbed the extra oxygen tank that Cristina had brought over. "Let me take a look at how much oxygen you have left," Mark muttered, going to look at the dial. The oxygen tank was practically empty. Sighing, Mark disconnected the oxygen dial from the current tank and placed it on the unused one.
"I'm fine," Lexie assured him, though she knew it was futile. Once she had the jacket on, Lexie already felt warmer, though she wished it was Mark's body heat that was warming her instead. Mark placed the oxygen tank in Lexie's lap. "I'm going to carry you," he explained, reaching down to pick up Lexie. He slipped one arm under her legs and put the other arm around her back, lifting her easily into his arms. Lexie placed one hand on the oxygen tank in her lap and wrapped the other arm around Mark's neck.
"I love you," Lexie murmured, leaning her head against Mark's shoulder. Being with Mark like this made Lexie feel safe and at home. Home was anywhere Mark was; it didn't matter if they were at Mark's apartment or Meredith's attic or the Archfield. She was home wherever Mark was. She just hated it took her so long to realize it.
"I love you, too, babe," Mark whispered, pressing a kiss to Lexie's cheek as he began walking toward the main site. A few minutes later, Mark and Lexie arrived.
"Aww, look at you two," Arizona cooed, her eyes gleaming in happiness. Arizona knew how much the two of them loved each other. She saw how miserable Mark and Lexie were without each other. Sure, Mark was dating Julia, but he didn't have that spark in him that he had with Lexie. He was never as peppy with Julia as he was with Lexie. The affection that he showed Lexie was incomparable. Arizona couldn't remember the last time she saw Mark kiss or hug Julia. With Lexie, though, he was always kissing her, hugging her, or holding her hand. "Lexie and Mark, Lexie and Mark," she giggled, smiling widely.
"We found a little Morphine," Derek explained, Mark and Lexie suddenly understanding Arizona's cheerful mood. Lexie looked to Mark, her eyes becoming heavy. She was so tired, but she didn't want to sleep. She was afraid that if she did, she may not wake back up.
"Arizona," Lexie smiled, breathing out a small laugh at her behavior. "How are you feeling?" Lexie questioned, looking over Arizona's injury to her leg. She bit her lip, feeling like she was being a baby now. Her legs weren't anything like Arizona's one leg was. If Arizona was alert, she should be, too. Arizona was alone for who knows how long while the rest of the group helped Lexie. She felt really bad.
"I'm okay. Wishing Callie were here," Arizona laughed girlishly, the pain medication taking over. "Isn't it funny? I'm married to an orthopedic surgeon, and now I need one to fix my leg."
Lexie frowned, feeling bad for Arizona. She was here without her partner. Even though Mark and Lexie weren't together, and they hadn't established what they were before they boarded the plane, Lexie knew that she was safe and sound with whatever they would encounter because she had Mark. She knew that no matter what, she could count on him. Cristina, too, was here without her partner. Lexie was overcome with emotion, clinging to Mark's neck.
"It's okay, they're okay," Mark commented, knowing what Lexie was thinking. He had that special power; he always knew what she was thinking. Mark moved closer to Arizona, placing Lexie on the ground close to the blonde. He noticed that Arizona had a blanket covering her body. Glancing around the ground, he looked for another blanket for Lexie. He found one a few feet away, and went to retrieve it for her. Laying it over her body, Mark moved over toward Derek to help him build a fire. "Was there any more Morphine?" Mark asked Derek, not wanting Lexie to overhear in case there was no medication left.
"Yeah, Meredith can get it for her," Derek replied. Meredith walked over to where they had stored it. She grabbed it and moved toward Lexie. "Here you go," she smiled, providing Lexie with the medication. "How did it go back there?" she asked, curious as to how the conversation went with her and Mark.
"He asked me to move back in with him," Lexie commented after she took the medication. She was so relieved that the group had found some pain killers.
"And?" Arizona asked giddily, turning her head to look at Lexie.
"I said yes," Lexie blushed, pulling the blanket up toward her shoulders.
"Eek!" Arizona shrieked.
"Do you think someone's coming?" Lexie asked softly after a few minutes, turning her glance toward Meredith. Meredith sighed deeply, shrugging her shoulders. "I hope so. I really thought that they would have sent help by now, though," she answered honestly, plopping herself beside Lexie. Meredith rested her head on Lexie's shoulder, lifting the blanket to cover her lap, as well.
Meanwhile, Mark and Derek located some matches and kindling to start a fire. They were able to get one started quite quickly, pushing the wood in front of the group of girls. Cristina made her way to sit beside Arizona. The blonde offered her part of the blanket, to which Cristina happily accepted. Once the boys were content with the size of the fire, they went and sat beside their respective girls.
"We'll be okay," Mark whispered, resting his hand across Lexie's thigh. The sun had set by now, and it was completely black besides the flames of the fire in front of them. Lexie wrapped her arms around Mark's strong one, resting her head against Mark's muscular arm. Derek leaned against Meredith, who was still resting against Lexie's shoulder. The six surgeons sat in relative silence, save for light talk here and there. They were all hoping that their rescuers were close. Unbeknownst to them, the Chief of Surgery, Owen Hunt, was just finding out that his doctors never made it to Boise.
