Remember Me

Chapter Four: For A Good Time Call...

"I have never met anyone with the name Dean." Lisa pondered aloud in the car on the ride home. Ben sat in the passenger seat, resting his chin in his hand. "I mean, the guy who hit me was named Dean, but that's the only time I've ever met a Dean." Ben perked up in his seat. It began to hit him. The man he had seen in his visions and heard his voice was Dean, the guy who had hit his mother's car. He knew there was a place he had seen this strange, but familiar man before. His mind must have been making up scenarios with this Dean character, but what about the pictures? The pictures didn't lie.

"Mom, are you sure you didn't briefly date a Dean?" Ben asked, watching his mother's body language. Lisa looked at him in shock and disbelief.

"Yes, Ben! I'm sure!" Lisa was bewildered with Ben's accusations. "Do you think I wouldn't remember?"

"It was just a question." Ben grumbled as he rested his chin back into the palm of his hand.

"I think it's the fracture making you see these weird dreams."

Ben remained silent as he thought about the pictures. He could have very well been making of scenarios with this man he remembered only meeting once, but the pictures were there. They told a complete different story and he was determined to find out the truth.

Lisa had kept a close eye on Ben for the majority of the day to make sure he didn't have another episode. To Ben's surprise the visions and voices weren't making an appearance. It was the only time where he wanted them too, but they didn't. He tried to get his mother out of the house or focused on something else so he could find the pictures again, but she had been completely and entirely focused on him. If he were to have another episode, she would want to be there for it.

Ben sat on the couch, watching TV as his mother grabbed the boxes on the table. He looked at her with a worried expression as she began to move toward the basement door.

"Mom, what are you doing?" Ben questioned in a shaky voice. Lisa turned to face him with a confused expression on her face.

"I'm putting the boxes away?"

"I was still going through those." Ben gulped loudly. Lisa sighed in annoyance and placed the boxes back on the table. She placed her hands on her hips as Ben leaned forward, drawing closer to the boxes. He looked at her and gave her a half hearted smile.

"Thank you." He said in a childlike voice. Lisa rolled her eyes and sighed as she turned and walked away from Ben. He continued to take the lid off the box and dig through the pictures again. He dug through piles of pictures of childhood memories such as holidays and weekends spent with grandparents, etc. until he had found the ones he was looking for. He grabbed the two pictures of his mom, himself, and Dean and slid them into his sweatshirt pocket. He continued to place the lid on the box just as his mom had entered the living room.

"I'm done with this one." He informed.

"I'm not sure if the other boxes have any pictures of you." Lisa mentioned. He looked up at her and gave her a look of curiosity. She exhaled in defeat. "Continue." Ben ripped the lid off of another box to see pictures of Lisa throughout school.

"See?" She said, pointing to the pictures as she sat down next to Ben. "These are all my childhood and high school memories."

"Can I still go through them?" Ben asked genuinely. Lisa scoffed.

"Why?"

"If I am going to be stuck here, I want to look at some embarrassing pictures of you." Ben said with a chuckle. Lisa laughed.

"Excuse you, I was not embarrassing in high school."

"I'll be the judge of that."

Lisa's and Ben's laughter filled the house as they both began to scuffle through pictures of Lisa's memories. Ben was hoping he would find a picture of Dean somewhere in there. Lisa looked at pictures of old friends with happy eyes. Ben looked to his mom to see her going through each and every picture and smiling soulfully with tears brimming at her eyes.

"Are you okay, Mom?" Ben asked, placing a hand on Lisa's shoulder. She quickly wiped the tears away and sniffled quietly.

"Yeah, baby, I'm okay. You can go through these." Ben looked at his mom carefully. "There should be some funny ones in there. Like the time I fell doing a stunt in cheerleading during a game. That was embarrassing." She said with a half hearted chuckle before getting up from the couch.

"I'm gonna start dinner. Will you be okay?" She asked. She knew Ben was legally considered an adult now, but she still wanted to make sure he would be okay without her.

"Yeah, Mom, I'll be okay." Ben replied, giving her a small smile. Once she had disappeared into the kitchen, Ben began to scuffle through the pictures in a hurry. Each picture brought him disappointment as it was far from what he was trying to find. He reached the bottom of the box and grabbed a random photo to find exactly what he was looking for.

Lisa and the man Ben had been seeing named Dean were side by side in a bar, beers in both of their hands. Dean had one arm wrapped around Lisa and she had been kissing his cheek. Ben stared at it for several minutes before realizing something had been written on the back. He turned the photograph around to find his mother had written on it.

Lisa B. & Dean W. 1998. Best night of my life.

Ben groaned in disgust as he knew what his mom meant. He looked at the date once more. 1998.

He began doing the math. "1998 was eighteen years ago, I'm eighteen." He mumbled to himself. "Does that mean..." He trailed off, flipping the picture over and looking at the man he had been seeing. "Does that mean that's my father?"

He began to grow dizzy and it felt as if the house was flipping. Ben tried to keep his calm as he flipped the photograph over once more to see if he had been reading it right. Then, he noticed something written on the bottom near the corner. A formation of numbers.

785-555-0128.

Ben gasped silently and quickly pulled his phone out of his pant's pocket. He hurriedly began dialing the number before it was too late. He placed the phone to his ear and it rang twice before it was finally picked up. A husky voice, much like the voice he had been hearing, on the other end answered.

"This is Dean."

A/N: I apologize! I mentioned a few chapters ago that it was his 9th birthday party he was seeing, I actually meant for it to be his 8th birthday party. He was 8. I apologize for the confusion. Hope you enjoyed the chapter! xoxo
