Chapter Three: New Arizona Life

Previously on You Left Me Behind. How Do You Feel Now?: Arizona here we come.

Present time: Arriving at new Arizona house.

EMILY POV

I lost track of the hours as soon as we hit Nevada. I miss Max. I couldn't help but feel the guilt and regret that settled in the pit of my stomach. We left her behind. I can't believe we left her behind. I am her best friend and she is mine. And I failed her by leaving her behind. I had promised her once that I would never leave her, yet, that is exactly what I did. The guilt is overwhelming.

-Flashback-

It was the first time Max visited after she moved into the lab. She was so small and fragile yet intelligent and strong. Something inside her sparked and a small fire burns inside her. She just doesn't know how special she is.

I engulf her in a big hug. I had missed her so much. She was my favorite out of the siblings because she was unlike any person I have ever known.

"I am here, Max. I will always be here for you."

"Thank you. I love you, big sis."

I smile. "Love you too, lil sis."

-End Flashback-

A tear slid down my face as I leaned my head against the cold window. It started raining about an hour ago and now it is pouring down harder. In the back, Aiden and Ella both have fallen asleep. Right now, sleep doesn't sound too bad.

I am woken by Aiden shaking my shoulders gently. I look up and he gives me a small smile.

"We are here," then he gets out of the way to let me out. Mom is talking to a man who has a little boy in his arms. Ella is standing next to Mom. Aiden and I walk over to them. All attention turns towards us.

Mom smiles. "Ah, sweetie, finally you are awake. Emily, this is your new Stepdad, John." The man from before smiles warmly at me. He has chocolate hair, hazel eyes, and tan skin. His eyes are very calm and caring. "And, Emily, this is Jake, your half-brother." I look at the little boy in John's arms. He looks exactly like John. I smile at both of them.

"Hi, John and Jake. I'm Emily." I shake John's hand.

I peer up at the house in front of me. It is a very modern looking house. It is gray with cobblestones and the yard is littered with desert palm trees and flowers. We walk inside the house and it is very light and open. When you walk in, you see the light gray living room, the dark gray dining room, and cream colored kitchen. Off to the left there are three rooms, one is the master bed, one is Jake's room, and one is a theater and game room. Off to the left is where the stairs are, garage and laundry room. Upstairs, there are five bedrooms. One has my name on the door, one with Ella's, another with Aiden's, one is an exercise room and the last is an office.

I walk inside my bedroom. It is huge, bigger than my current room. The walls are painted black on the bottom and get to a light purple at the top. The bed is up against the wall with a black and purple comforter and silver throw pillows; under the window is a black desk with a white laptop sitting atop. There is a walk-in closet and bathroom. I sit on my bed as Mom stands in the doorway.

"Honey, get dressed into something nice. You are going to meet our neighbors. They have some kids around your age." I nod and she leaves. I put on a pair of black jeans, a silver crop top with a black cami, and a pair of sandals.

I smile and walk downstairs to see everyone ready. We head to the house next door where two families are waiting to greet us. We are greeted by a friendly woman who hugged Mom and John. She allowed us in and we saw that everyone was already seated at a huge table.

The same woman from earlier spoke up once she was seated. "So, Val? Who are these three lovely kids you have with you?"

Mom smiled. "These are my three kids. Remember the ones I told you about? Well, they are moving in with us." Mom pointed to me, "This is Emily my oldest. She is sixteen. Then we have Aiden who is fourteen and last but not least, Ella who is twelve."

The woman smiled at each of us. "Hello. It is very nice to meet you, Emily, Aiden and Ella. I am Joy Griffiths. Iggy," She points to a strawberry blonde boy with sparking blue eyes. "He is sixteen. Then Angel, "She points to a girl with copper locks and blue eyes. "She is twelve. And Zephyr or Gazzy as we called him," Lastly, she points to a blue who looks exactly like Angel. "He is twelve as well."

I nod. Another woman clears her throat. She has olive skin, dark brown hair, and dark brown eyes. "This is Nick or Fang," She points to a tall boy with midnight black hair, dark brown eyes, and olive skin. "He is sixteen. And we adopted Crystal or Nudge here, "She points to a girl with chocolate skin, hazel eyes, and black curly hair. "She is fourteen.

We start eating and descend into a comfortable conversation. I was enjoying myself but I wish Max was here. She would have loved this. If only she was here. My good mood faded. Max needs to be here.
