She tried to run, but she was stuck in place. With every step her feet were kicking back more and more sand. With every step she was sinking further and further down into the red sands. The sky was blood red. Even though it was clearly day, the sun was nowhere to be seen. A huge storm cloud hung overhead, instead. Thunders flickered where once were sunrays.
Voices circled around her. Ghosts whose names she didn't remember were calling out to her, beckoning her to come back to a home that was long gone.
And those were the nice ones. Flickers of torn memories were blaming her for surviving, hating her for existing. Sisters and cousins were pulling her down.
How come she is the only one that survived?! Why is she the one that got to live?! We were here, too!
Let our sister finally rest with us, under the sands…
I can help you, came the booming voice. I can put an end to your suffering. Just tell me your name, child. Let me find you.
The Nile began rising from the sands. She tried to scream, but her lungs were filled with water. In fact, she was uncapable of saying anything.
The voice yelled in rage as the water kept on rising and the girl kept on sinking in the fresh mud.
"Carter! Can you hear me?"
Carter Kane's ba focused his eyes on the god.
"Oh, hey Horus! What's up?"
They were hanging in empty black space. Horus whistled. "Still haven't gotten around to decorating, have you?"
The boy glared. "Haven't had much time, you know, because the world's ending!"
"Yeah, about that." Horus snapped his fingers. A hologram image of a statue appeared between them. "Remember when you asked me about the Book of Ra? You need to get this statue, it's the key to the first scroll."
"Where am I-"
"Brooklyn Museum."
Carter rolled his eyes. "I get that you can see my thoughts, but you can at least wait till I finish my sentence."
"I thought you were short on time? Either way, I think a 'thank you' is in order. After all, I answered your question."
"I asked you about the Book of Ra two months ago!"
Horus smiled. "Been busy. You know, because the world is ending."
And with that he disappeared.
Carter Kane awoke with a start and looked at his phone.
6:00 am on 16th of March. Stupid gods and their stupid time blindness! They were worse than Sadie when it came to that and she had a tendency to forget what month it is. Better get ready then.
