Ren and Yang had an easy trip to the relics. The two of them had launched with the intention of getting as close to the objective as possible so aside from a few ursa and beowolves, the two of them made it pretty easily to the ruin. Ren happened to be first and remembering Nora calling herself "Queen of the Castle" on occasion, decided to take a White Rook piece. The two were getting ready to head back when they heard the high pitch screaming of what could only be a girl in the distance. Still it wouldn't be long before the two of them were joined by others.
Ruby was having an exhausting trip to the ruins. Blake had originally seemed like a calm and collected girl, but for some reason seemed particularly panicky during their trip. And fear brought the Grimm. It was especially annoying because the fear seemed unwarranted. With her extra eyes Ruby could see basically everything around them and whatever Blake was searching for clearly wasn't Grimm as they had already killed plenty of them. With all the advantages Ruby had, the only way Blake would be able to notice something she didn't was if Blake was a faunus, but she didn't have any animal traits so that didn't seem like the case. Still Ruby wasn't about to tell Blake nothing was wrong, because that would mean exposing her extra eyes and if Ruby wouldn't do that with her family out of embarrassment, then she definitely wouldn't reveal it to a complete stranger. Still as time went on she began to just retract her eyes, the Grimm were pretty obvious in their approach and Ruby was starting to think Blake was just paranoid.
Blake knew that her fear towards this unknown entity was drawing Grimm and beginning to annoy her partner, but a human like Ruby wouldn't be able to feel this primal fear. Had her partner been a faunus then she would likely be able to feel it to. The fear of facing down a threat where the only thing you can do is be out of the way. Fortunately, while the fear did draw in Grimm, Ruby had shown herself to be very capable in a fight. Her Telekinesis was ridiculously strong even if it could only target one thing at a time, but against Grimm that hardly mattered as she could toss them high into the sky and let them fall to their deaths. It certainly made things easier on Blake who could focus on the threat only she could detect. As time went on however, the presence faded more and more until it appeared to have vanished completely. In Blake's mind this could mean one of two things. Either the entity had moved on or it had hidden itself. Blake wasn't about to let her guard down, but after 10 minutes of nothing but the odd grimm attack she decided it must be the former and calmed down enough to actually talk to her partner.
"Sorry about that. Just a feeling I had and I have grown used to trusting those feelings." Blake started trying to sound calmer than she actually felt.
"Oh? Does your semblance give you some kind of sixth sense!" Ruby asked, sounding more excited. "Also what kind of weapon do you use, you mostly left the Grimm to me while you were keeping an eye out?" The second part sounded a bit more… passive aggressive, but Blake could tell that the girl didn't mean anything bad by it.
"My weapon is called Gambol Shroud, it's a variant ballistic Chain scythe. Now isn't really the time to discuss weapons though we should make it to those ruins."
Ruby actually jerks at this clearly having temporarily forgotten why they were here in favor of learning about her new partner's weapon. As they begin moving again however, a screech sounds off above them from an old Grimm that has been attracted by the fear Blake has been exhibiting and the annoyance of Ruby.
Weiss's day was not improving. Nora was the most hyperactive person Weiss had ever met and given the refined style Weiss carried herself with, the two of them did not mix well. It was a good thing that they didn't run into many Grimm along the way to the ruins as Weiss was pretty sure they would be attracted to her… Grumpy mood.
It didn't help that they were lost too. Fortunately for Weiss's sanity the day would be saved in the form of ironically the childish red hooded girl and that rude black haired girl as the two of them ran past her and Nora.
"Run, run, run!" Blake called out behind her as they passed.
As Weiss turned around to see what was causing all the fuss it quickly became apparent as an Elder Nevermore let out a screech. Pretty soon the four of them were running just thankful that the forest gave them cover from the Nevermore. Still the big Grimm turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Weiss as they had reached what appeared to be a clearing when the Grimm apparently lost interest in them, or at least wasn't interested in their group for now.
The clearing was more important as the four of them saw familiar faces and what had to be the ruins they were searching for. As Weiss and Blake went to pick up the 'relics' the others were greeting each other.
"Yang!"
"Ruby!"
"Nora!" Nora cuts in as Ruby and Yang go in for a hug. Still it doesn't take long for her to run over to Ren and begin asking him how his trip to the ruins went. Despite looking tired it is clear from his expression that Ren is relieved that Nora made it okay.
Yang and Ruby watch Ren and Nora catch up before getting ready to ask each other how they've been only to be interrupted by a screaming Jaune who faceplants in between the two of them.
"Jaune? Are you okay?" Ruby questions. The launch had taken place a while ago so she was pretty sure he hadn't been falling the whole time, especially as she had seen the spear being launched at him.
Jaune is a little too dazed to answer, but the cause of his current state becomes clear when Pyrrha enters the clearing followed by an elder Death Stalker. Weiss and Blake exit the ruins having picked their relics. Ruby isn't one to stand back when someone is in trouble and so she starts running to help Pyrrha.
Ruby has had to experiment with her powers quite a lot to get a hang of them and she knows that she isn't strong enough to manipulate the whole Death Stalker with her Telekinesis. However, as Pyrrha blocks one of the Death Stalker's Claws with her shield the tail begins to stab towards her and that is something Ruby can stop. Still it's close and she stops the tail inches from impaling Pyrrha. The attacks aren't over yet however, but fortunately for Pyrrha, Weiss comes in with the save this time freezing the Death Stalker in place and allowing all three girls to pull back and regroup.
Jaune has recovered a bit by now and seeing his partner is safe looks to the ruins and quickly grabs the remaining black knight piece. As the three girls finally make it back to the group everyone hears the cry of the Elder Nevermore as it begins to return.
"You've gotta be kidding me." Jaune sounds tired before coming up with a suggestion. "Alright well we already got the relics, so how about we just run back to the cliffs."
A quick nod of agreement has everyone running through the woods, but no sooner had they made it to a new set of ruins at the base of the cliff they had all been thrown off that they realized they needed a new plan. The Death Stalker had long freed itself and the Nevermore was far more persistent this time around. What made the situation worse was that the two Grimm were working together surprisingly well.
It is due to this surprising teamwork that even with the eight of them working together the Huntsmen-in-training were totally on the defensive. Frankly the only reason they were all still okay was because Ruby seemed to be able to see everything at once and was directing everyone. On top of that she had already redirected several attacks set to impale her fellows.
At this rate however they were going to lose. Every time someone tried to bring the Nevermore down or shoot at it the Death Stalker would interrupt them, and anytime the Death Stalker was being ganged up on the Nevermore would swoop down and toss its sharp feathers. Forcing the students to dodge while Ruby did her best to redirect attacks.
Still it wasn't completely out of hand as Weiss was using her remaining Ice dust to control the Death Stalkers movement and Jaune had been keeping an eye out for openings and it was his observations that actually resulted in some damage being done to the Death Stalker and he was trying to come up with something for the Nevermore.
In all it looked like they may actually be able to win when everything went wrong.
