This will be the final chapter of this story as it meant to be more of an episode-length fanfiction. But if this story is okay for you all, the next fanfiction with the Justice League will see something completely new. Have fun reading as the Justice League takes Mordru down!

Chapter 4: The Battle of Camden

LONDON
MAY 20, 3:28 GMT

The Justice League moved into action as Mordru's army began to fan out to initiate their master's conquest. The League understood that the first task of successfully foiling Mordru's plan was to contain his army in this one spot, so the eleven heroes made a semi-circle and closed in to fight. As the horde of goblins came at them, Superman shouted, "Take them down! Now!"

All at once, the League engaged the monstrous attackers at point-blank range and dozens of dogfights began echoing across the sky and on the ground. Superman, Wonder Woman, and Martian Manhunter were now at the front line and they swatted the goblins aside like flies. Superman punched with enough force to knock his opponents away without severely injuring them and many of the goblins were blown away before they knew what hit them. He also froze their weapons with his freeze-breath or melted them with his heat vision, and any of the goblins' weapons that hit him only ended up with notches or broke completely. Wonder Woman blocked the goblins' attacks with her magic bracelets and easily outmatched them with her martial arts tactics, and she even used her magic lasso to bind a few goblins and use them as weights to knock the rest out of the sky. Martian Manhunter shapeshifted several times to bring his opponents down and used his intangibility to use their own attacks against them, and he used his telekinesis to bind them with pipes from under the streets.

On the ground, Batman, Aquaman, Flash, Green Lantern, and Green Arrow were keeping the ogres and the harpies at bay. Batman not only subdued his opponents with batarangs, but he also used shock-pellets, Bat-cables, and sonic-blast projectors to take the monsters down. His martial arts tactics were even more effective and most of his opponents fell before they could land even one blow. Aquaman had a more difficult time as he had only his trident to use, but he fought hard and kept a level head, and in moments several of Mordru's monster servants were on the ground. Green Lantern not only handled the ogres and the harpies well, but he personally took on the giant worms, whose underground tunneling was destabilizing the ground. He used green-energy ramps to prevent the worms from diving back into the ground and then whacked them with green-energy hammers. He also knocked the harpies out with green-energy boots, baseball bats, golf clubs, cannons, boxing gloves, and irons.

Flash ran at the ogres at super-speed and punched, kicked, and shoulder-tackled as he did. He was less strongly built and shorter in height, but the creatures were not invulnerable to physical attack, so he had them on the ground with a few blows and deftly evaded their attacks without trouble. As for Green Arrow, he fired boxing-glove arrows, net arrows, rocket arrows, and smoke-bomb arrows at every monstrous creature that stood in his path. His attacks were swift and well-coordinated and each monster was unable to dodge his shots in time. However, Green Arrow knew that he would have to spare most of his arrows and so compensated with martial arts tactics. Needless to say, his tactics were hard and fast and even the black hounds had trouble fighting him.

Meanwhile, Doctor Fate, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl were covering the rooftops to prevent the others from being overwhelmed by the onrushing monster horde. Doctor Fate blasted the goblins and harpies with golden beams of magic, causing them to vanish like smoke in the winds. He flung fireballs at the creatures, froze them in ice, turned them into crows and lizards, and even turned them to stone.

Hawkman and Hawkgirl were having a surprisingly easy time fending off Mordru's goblins. Their energy-charged maces shattered the goblins' weapons like glass and every blow they struck made the creatures howl with pain. The spectral dogs tried to bite them, but their teeth stung on contact with the rounded shields wielded by the Hawks. Not only were their weapons powerful, but the two winged warriors were also powerfully skilled in martial arts tactics. They punched, kicked, whiplashed, and caught their opponents in headlocks. In a short time, the Justice League had outmatched a large portion of Mordru's monster army. But it wasn't enough, for the creatures were still pouring out into the world in hordes.

"We can't hold them back forever!" Wonder Woman called out. "The more time we spend fighting the monsters only increases Mordru's chances of beating us!"

"Then we draw the line here," replied Batman. "We'll send them back to where they came from."

Doctor Fate gave Batman a nod and then flew higher into the sky. Then he said in a commanding voice, "Gi endesh immaru kahi ra en!"*

All at once, a portal of golden light filled the sky followed by the sound of updrawn wind. The winged goblins were pulled into the whirling maelstrom and vanished. The harpies were the next to go, and then the ogres. The wind was too strong for the giant worms and the hapless creatures were vacuumed up in it. The spectral dogs tried to cling to the buildings, but they too were drawn into the portal. In a few moments, the monster army of Mordru was gone. But the evil wizard was not going to surrender by a long shot.

"Fools!" he screamed. "You will now die!"

Mordru used a spell that caused the gargoyles on Euston Tower to come alive and attack the Justice League. The League easily crushed them to rubble, and then Mordru began hurling spells at them with reckless abandon, not caring who he hit as long as he struck all of them down in the end. But he had reckoned without Hawkman and Hawkgirl. His spell blasts were only deflected by their shields and their maces absorbed the blasts without harming the Hawks.

Superman pounded Mordru's chest with tremendous force, forcing him back with each blow. Green Lantern formed a green-energy hammer, catapult, wrecking ball, and even a giant battering ram to knock Mordru off the tower. Flash tried to throw the evil wizard off-balance by running around his legs, making it impossible for Mordru to determine where to strike. Wonder Woman used her magic lasso to bind Mordru's arms and tried to pull him to the ground while Batman used his Bat-cable to bind the villain's legs.

Mordru fought back with all the strength he could muster, but even though he managed to stun Wonder Woman and break free of Batman's cable, he felt a sudden shock when Hawkman and Hawkgirl struck him from in front and behind. The pain from their maces was tremendous and Mordru bent over double from the sting. Then Aquaman and Green Arrow drew Mordru's attention while Martian Manhunter tried to penetrate the evil wizard's mind. Then at a nod from Superman, the League pulled back and let Doctor Fate take up the battle.

"Mordru!" Fate challenged. "This ends now!"

"And it will see victory for ME!" the evil Mordru raged.

He shot a stream of poison-green light at Doctor Fate, but it was swatted aside and dissipated. Doctor Fate rose higher into the air and then flew straight at Mordru, who hefted his hammer and prepared to knock Fate out of the sky. Instead, Doctor Fate released blasts of golden light that stung Mordru fiercely. He tried to withstand it, but the force was too great and his knees buckled. Mordru then hurled fireballs at Doctor Fate, who responded with bolts of lightning, icy winds, and vines. After a long and fierce battle, Fate then caused the stone of the tower to bind the villain long enough for him to open a portal back to Eorcanheim. When it was formed, Superman, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Flash, and the Hawks began forcing Mordru into the portal and held him there so Fate could send him back.

Doctor Fate chanted,"Gi endesh immaru kahi ra en! Gi endesh immaru kahi ra en! Gi endesh immaru kahi ra en!"

He blasted Mordru with the strongest beam of mystic energy yet as the Justice League released the villain, and Mordru was blasted into the portal and vanished with a howl of agonized hate. A wave of magic light spread through the sky as Euston Tower began to shift and change until it resumed its true appearance. The storm clouds faded until the sky became visible once more and the stars came out as if they had been hiding in fear of Mordru. The battle was over, and another victory was under the Justice League's belt.

"And that's how we kick it on the earthly plain!"* Flash quipped.

"I couldn't have said it better," added Superman.

"We've earned this victory for sure," Batman affirmed. "But it's become clear that seven of us won't be enough to keep the peace if threats on this scale continue to occur. Perhaps it's time for us to recruit other superheroes to the League."

"And I believe we have some new friends who have shown the qualifications necessary," Martian Manhunter said.

The League turned to Green Arrow, Hawkman and Hawkgirl, and Doctor Fate. This would be a life-changing decision that would decide the fates of so many, so the decision would have to be carefully made. And judging from the interested expressions shown from Arrow and the Hawks, it seemed the choice was going in the right direction.

WASHINGTON, D.C.
MAY 20, 9:30 EST

The Justice League was commended for their bravery in protecting the world from the evil of Mordru in Washington, and several citizens and federal officials turned out to welcome Green Arrow, Hawkman, and Hawkgirl as the first recruits. Superman's rousing speech affirmed that the League would continue to uphold the law and abide by it as long as fairness and justice was the priority, and then Green Arrow and the Hawks took the League's vow to protect the innocent and fight crime everywhere in the name of justice, freedom, and peace. People throughout the country congratulated the new Justice Leaguers from their own homes and in public squares. But in Metropolis, one individual was not pleased, and we can all guess whom.

METROPOLIS
MAY 20, 9:45 EST

Lex Luthor scowled as he read the headlines for that morning: NEW RECRUITS TO JOIN JUSTICE LEAGUE. It was bad enough that Superman was always standing in the way of his plans, he thought, and it had only worsened when the so-called Justice League was formed. Now the League was adding new members to its roster. If it kept up, his covert plans to achieve world domination would fall apart and he would no longer be the dominant money-spinner in Metropolis.

Luthor's actions were usually questionable when it came to crimes involving LexCorp technology being used and he often did a fair job of covering his tracks, but the Justice League was bound to expose him as subverting the laws of the United States soon, and in Luthor's mind it had to be prevented from getting out of hand.

Lex was snapped out of his trance when his personal bodyguard Mercy Graves entered the enormous office room with several files in hand. She approached her employer and said, "Here are those dossiers you requested, Mr. Luthor."

"Thank you, Mercy," Luthor replied. He set them on his desk and opened a few of them, revealing them to be criminal files on the Joker, Captain Cold, the Riddler, Bizarro, and the Toyman. He grinned, which made Mercy inquire, "Anything I should know about your newest idea, sir?"

"Superman and his Justice League are making it too difficult for those of us at the top and bottom of the social echelons to profit from taking on work that truly requires the ability to survive," Luthor replied. "They talk of promoting the freedom of the layabout folk who do not take that work for fear of risking their own necks when freedom is never given in this world. It is earned. If the poor and working people really want a better life, they should work as hard as I do instead of asking for comforts they do not deserve for lack of effort."

"And in your mind, the Justice League will continue to obstruct those ideas because they value those layabout folk more than they value fame and power," Mercy added.

"Precisely," said Luthor. "And every time they receive commendations for fighting crime, they never ask for payment or tribute other than those commendations, and still they continue to present their image of being humble and true and just when they are no better than anyone else."

He looked back at the dossiers and said thoughtfully, "If Superman can form a team to fight against survival of the fittest, well… I can form one of my own."

A/N: Flash's quote is taken from that of Kid Flash in the Young Justice episode "Denial", which featured the first appearance of Doctor Fate in the Young Justice series. Also, Doctor Fate hasn't joined the League yet because he is not certain that it is the right time. Also, Doctor Fate's chant is Sumerian for "Return to the realm from where you came!"

Hope you enjoyed this new Justice story. Feel free to rate and review, and stay tuned. Among my other stories, new adventures of the Justice League are on their way.
