It had been a few days since Nick had been admitted into the hospital. They had wanted to get the results of more tests before discharging him. Apparently, they were searching for an answer as to why his blood sugar kept dropping.
Judy was currently in the lobby of the ZPD. Obviously, she wasn't waiting there for Nick. Instead, Nick had called her this morning. So, she figured it wouldn't hurt to talk to him for a while.
"Carrots?"
"Hey, Nick. What's up?"
"So I... uh..."
Judy couldn't help but notice that Nick sounded somewhat nervous. That was already freaking her out. Did he have bad news to tell her? It seemed like there was a long silence as Judy waited for Nick to respond.
"I have to get surgery sometime next week. Apparently, there's a tumor in my pancreas. It's called insu-... insulinoma, I think."
Judy was shocked. She didn't know what exactly that meant for Nick, but to say the least, she knew surgeries weren't good news for anyone in the hospital, which brought her to her next thought. Would Nick have to stay in the hospital all the way until next week?
"Are they going to make you stay that long? Until the surgery?" Judy asked a little surprised.
"Well..." Nick contemplated. "Not exactly. They've been able to keep my blood sugar stable with eating every few hours or so. With that, I'm allowed to leave, but I'll probably stay..."
"What?" Judy asked completely bewildered. "Nick, I was assuming that you would want to get out of there for a bit? What's wrong?"
"No, nothing's wrong, Carrots. Well, I-I mean th-there obviously is something, I just..."
Nick fought to find the right words.
"They just don't feel comfortable with me leaving without someone else staying with me to help monitor my blood sugar. You get it?"
Judy was taken aback. Had Nick not even considered having her stay with him? She would do it no doubt, even if he didn't want her to. Nick was her closest friend and she would do whatever he needed in order to help him.
"Nick, I can stay with you." Judy spat out.
Nick didn't answer Judy right away. He was obviously in some sort of daze thinking about something. Or rather, in this case, thinking about someone.
"But what about Bogo? I'm sure he-"
"Nick, don't worry about Bogo. I'll handle him, okay? I'm getting you out of there."
Judy had learned more than she ever thought was possible. Apparently, the tumor Nick had in his pancreas, insulinoma, was making the said organ produce too much insulin. With too much insulin, the blood sugar goes down to extremely low levels, and with low levels, that leads to why Nick had been in the hospital in the first place.
Judy had been at the hospital in Nick's room speaking with Dr. Deckley and Nurse Gregerson for about the last ten minutes. The two had been going over the specifics about Nick's current condition and what she would need to do. They also taught her the key warning signs of low blood sugar and what to do.
They had told her to give him fifteen grams of carbohydrates every fifteen minutes until Nick's blood sugar was high enough. Something suddenly clicked in Judy's brain. When Nick hadn't been feeling well the other day, he ate a donut, and to her surprise, he had gotten magically better. It made a whole lot more sense now.
"If he's leaving, you two have to treat this with all your care and concern." Dr. Deckley lightly scolded. "If he's not constantly going to be in the eyes of professional medics, there has to be responsibilities to withhold."
Judy and Nick felt slightly intimidated, but still nodded.
"We will, Doctor. If he shows any signs at all, we will take precaution and abide by the procedures to handle it." Judy smiled proudly as she put her paws behind her back.
It was clear that Judy had full confidence with helping Nick. She had been watching carefully, even taking notes as the nurse and doctor showed and explained exactly what to do if Nick had a low blood sugar.
The tiger doctor looked over to where Nick was with a relieved expression plastered on his face. He lightly smiled before opening his mouth to speak.
"As far as I can see, she is very responsible. It's a good thing she agreed to stay with you." Dr. Deckley said gesturing to Judy.
Nick raised his eyebrows while looking over to Judy. Judy looked back at him in a teasing manner, while crossing her arms in pride. It was her way of pretending to laugh in his face and say that she was more responsible than him.
"Well, thank you. I hate to go... I've just had a blast here." Nick joked.
"Don't get too far ahead of yourself, Wilde. You come back next week for your surgery." Nurse Gregerson corrected while cracking a smile.
Nick playfully rolled his eyes and sighed at the comment. Though Nick was joking around about the situation, Judy knew that he didn't completely hate it at the hospital. But, for her friend's sake, she knew Nick couldn't be cooped up for much longer. That's why she had insisted on staying with him.
"Now, if you'll pardon me, I must get going. I'm on a very tight schedule today." Dr. Deckley said politely.
With that, the tiger doctor left the room, leaving only the wolf nurse with them. Gregerson was currently gathering Nick's supplies into a small, cloth, drawstring bag. Judy decided that since he didn't look too busy, this would be a great time to get answers for some of her questions.
"Just a couple questions, Nurse." Judy said aloud.
Nurse Gregerson stopped what he was doing and turned his head. He set down the items in his paws and turned his whole body to face Judy. The wolf took a few steps forward to lessen the distance.
"So, you said to give him something with roughly fifteen grams of sugar if he's low. Well, what if he's unconscious? What do I do then?" Judy asked kind of nervous.
Gregerson went back over to the cloth drawstring bag from before and opened it. He reached inside and pulled out a bright red case. Nurse Gregerson brought it over so both Nick and Judy could see it. In the top of the box, there was a prescription label with Nick's name on it.
"We know it's only a week, but it's better to be safe. This is a glucagon injection." Nurse Gregerson said while holding up the case. "If Nick is passed out or is unable to eat anything, give him this. There's a needle with water and a vial with a tablet medicine. What you need to do, Hopps, is put the needle in the vial and make sure all the water goes in. Make sure the medicine inside is dissolved before you for do anything else."
Judy scrambled to get it her notepad and pen. It seemed like the nurse was talking really fast, but it was probably just her. Before Judy could even finish her her first note, Gregerson started talking again.
"After that, use the syringe to get the mixture back from the vial. What's inside the syringe gives you two doses. Give him one dose in the upper leg, straight up and down, and then call for an ambulance. While you're waiting for the ambulance, put him in the recovery position."
Judy would have to make sure she looked up what the recovery position was later. She didn't know what that position was. Judy quickly added that reminder to her set of notes.
"So, long story short, put the water in the medicated vial, put it back in the syringe, then put it in me." Nick said to Judy while making gestures with his paws.
Gregerson laughed.
"Yes, Wilde. Just remember, the kit is for emergency purposes only. If you can eat or drink something, that would be preferably better. The medicine gives some side effects."
As you can see, they still haven't cracked the case about the stolen car, so this story is not over!
