The news of Morgana's escape from prison permeated the surrounding air and held each member of the team in their place as if their feet had been turned into concrete. Barely a week had passed since she had been sent to prison and already she was loose.

"What happened chief?" asked Gwen. "How did it happen?"

Jacob's jaw tightened in anger. "Mathison told me that a pair of winged creatures had broken her out the previous evening. Even the prison guards didn't believe what they saw."

"Wait a minute!" Gwen suddenly remembered something. "During our investigation, one of our suspects, a bird watcher, remembered seeing a couple of large winged creatures flying through the sky carrying a woman late last night! She may be able to tell us more!"

"Then I want you and (Name) to speak to her about what she saw."

"Excuse me," Luke approached the chief. "I was wondering if I could speak to (Name) about something."

"Glad to see you're with us again kid," said Jacob with a smile.

"Don't call me kid!" Luke pouted. "How many times do I have to tell everybody that?"

"So what's on your mind Luke?"

Luke sighed. "Well, as you all know, I'm still very upset about what happened to Heather. I've been thinking about what Gwen and Felix told me, and I've come to the decision that I should still keep in touch with her. She needs all the emotional support she can get in the near future."

"Well that may be difficult to do," said Jacob. "We don't have the materials for sending out letters: papers, envelopes, stamps. You may need to go down to the Office Depot store where the victim worked and buy some of them. Take some of the money Heather gave us. But we need to stick to our budget."

Within the hour, Luke is back at the Rv with a package of paper and a box of envelopes. The clerk had given him a special discount for the team solving the murder of his friend. During their time at the store, Luke saw a news bulletin on the television hanging from the ceiling about the Indiana prison escape. The reporter left out all details of winged creatures. Apparently, any mention would cause a panic.

While Hope worked to uncover the prison where Heather was detained, Luke wrote out his first letter to her. Meanwhile, Gwen and (Name) were out investigating their other lead. They returned to the RV camp carrying a discarded prison jumpsuit which left no doubt in anyone's head that it belonged to Morgana. They left it with Priya for analysis to discover any unknown substance on the jumpsuit which would help confirm which species of creatures had aided Morgana in her escape.

Finally, Luke finished writing and sat back to admire his work. He read:

Dear Heather,

I want you to know that in spite of what happened, I'm still your friend. You're still the same girl I came to know and understand in Parkford when no one else would. Even if the whole world turns its back on you, I'll always support by you. A true friend would always stands by your side even when the world throws you to the wolves. Not only that, he'd help you fend off the pack, even if they were werewolves.

So hang in there and be strong! I know the future isn't going to be easy and the road ahead of you uncertain, but you won't have to walk it alone knowing that you have me to anchor you for the storm ahead.

Always in my thoughts.

Your friend, Luke Fernandez

Writing out the letter somewhat lifted his spirits. If only he would be able to see the look on her face when she read these words.

But it didn't last when he paid a visit to Hope to see if she had discovered where Heather was being imprisoned.

"The good news is that I have found out where she is being detained," said Hope. "She's at the Rockville Correctional Facility."

"Is there bad news?" asked Luke. Despite the warmth in the RV and the spring weather outside, he felt a slight chill as if a lingering winter breeze had blown in.

"It turns out that there was another breakout involving at least one winged creature," said Hope. "The prison hasn't released any of the details yet on who the missing inmate is as it had just happened early this morning."

"Two prison breakouts in less than a day?" asked Luke. "What if Heather is the inmate?"

"If that's true, you might want to hold off on delivering that letter," said Hope.

Luke found himself at a loss. Just a few minutes ago he was in good spirits for the first time in a week. Now he was filled with dread and concern for Heather.

"Give me a recap," said Jacob as the team regrouped outside the RV's. "What have you discovered?"

"Chief, you're not going to believe this," said Gwen, her face has been painted over with terror. "Even Priya almost didn't believe it. But the tests confirmed that there were traces of sulphur on Morgana's jumpsuit!"

"That means the creatures who helped her escape from prison were demons!" Jacob's fist tightened. "First she kidnapped children across the midwest to consume them for power, then she orchestrated her sister's death for trying to rescue them. Now this! She may be willing to form an allegiance with demons! Is there anything this witch won't do?"

"More bad news chief!" Luke cried out, his hands clutching his temple. "There's been another jailbreak involving winged creatures at the prison where Heather is detained! No word yet on who the captured inmate is, but I can't help but feel the nagging feeling that it could be Heather!"

"Settle down Luke," said Jacob holding up his one palm. "You don't know for certain if it is Heather. Still it could be a possibility. Morgana was very angry about what she saw as a betrayal on Heather's part. Perhaps this demon abduction is part of her plan for revenge. Now I understand my mentor Falcon was involved in this investigation. He may know something. If you're really that concerned, go with (Name) and talk to him.

They found Falcon in the wilderness cooking something in a pot over a fire. Luke learned the hard way that Falcon didn't like to be taken by surprise when he stepped on a twig. The snap alerted the old man to their presence and he held up his crossbow in a defensive manner. "Who's there?" he shouted. "Show yourself with your hands up!"

"Whoa there!" Luke held out his hands. "Settle down Falcon. Jacob sent us!"

Hearing the mention of his protege somewhat settled Falcon's nerves and he lowered the crossbow. "Don't sneak up on me like that! I'm supposed to be living off the grid, remember?"

Luke stepped closer into the clearing, the smell of whatever Falcon was cooking tantalized his nose. But he preferred his meat in the form of a burger. "Speaking of off the grid, we're looking for a couple of inmates who were take from separate prisons by creatures we believe to be demons."

"Demons again?" asked Falcon. "Boy, you ought to know better than to mess with these creatures. But since you asked, I did see a demon flying through the sky in the later morning carrying what appeared to be a young woman. The creature landed somewhere in this forest and I've been trying to track it down."

"What did this woman look like?"

"I didn't get a clear view of her," said Falcon with a shrug, "but from what I saw, all I can tell you is that she appeared to be clad only in her undergarments. I did hear a scream in the distance some time after the demon descended to the forest floor. I tried to follow her footprints, but they disappeared into the nearby river. I last saw her disappearing into the distance, swimming away from her captor."

"Do you know where the river leads?" asked Luke.

"Down into Ohio," said Falcon. "I wish I could be of further help, but I told you all I know. The river is just down that hill past the trees over there to the south. Give my regards to Jacob when you see him again."

Down by the river, they found a trail of footprints leading down to the water. Whoever the woman was, she wasn't wearing shoes or socks. As (Name) took a sample of the soil for Priya to study and find traces of sulfur, Luke looked up into the trees and saw a lone owl sitting upon a high branch, watching them.

"Come on (Name), let's get out of here and bring the sample to Priya. I'm getting uneasy about that owl watching us."

As if on cue, the owl spreads its wings and takes flight to the south, following the river.

#

"The bad news Luke is that the sample has no skin cells to determine who this woman is," said Priya. "The worse news is that there were traces of sulphur mixed in with the soil. Sulphur which was left on her skin when the demon carried her. It should have washed off when she went for a swim in the river."

"That means Falcon's story rings true," said Luke. "He really did see the demon carrying the prisoner."

"For the moment, the only good news is that whoever she is, she's managed to escape her captor. But for how long? She's being hunted by both the demons and the authorities."

"In the meantime," said Luke, "Hope is tracing the path of the river trying to determine where this woman could go. All we can do now is wait until we hear news of a sighting for either Morgana or this other woman. For now, we should inform the chief of our findings."

#

Sometime after nightfall, Hope brought word of a sighting along the river of a mysterious woman washed up on the shores in Ohio. There was no sighting for where Morgana could have gone. All the team knew was that she had gone down south. It was important that they found her and stopped the possibility of a demonic alliance before returning her to prison.

"Pack your stuff up everybody!" Jacob said. "We're on our way to Ohio!"
