A small group of surgical residents shuffled into Room 3219 just in time for morning rounds, beady eyes peered hungrily at the young woman sat upright in her bed. The patient's long brown hair fell loosely around her sunken profile, her weariness evident across her pallid complexion. Despite her affliction, the patient's face quickly transitioned from sullen to lively and optimistic as Callie entered the room.
"Jennifer, I thought we spoke about this. I told you I didn't want to see you anymore."
"Can you blame me, look at you…" Jen's piercing blue eyes raked over the Latina's form intently, only a blind person would have missed the look between the two women.
"You could have had this surgery in New York." Callie retorted sternly to the flirtatious woman in the hospital bed.
"You know me, I try to fight it but in the end I just can't stop myself. I just had to see you"
"Jen…"
"Come on, you're the best and I want the best." Jen reached out of the bed and softly placed her pale hand against the caramel tones of Callie's forearm.
"Flattery…will get you everywhere with a surgeon." Callie smiled back, her stern persona melting with the physical contact; she returned the affection by placing her hand over Jen's gently.
"Don't I know it?" Jen seductively replied with a wink for added effect on the Orthopedic surgeon.
The residents stood mesmerized at the interaction between doctor and her patient as if they were watching an enthralling game of tennis. Eyes darting shamelessly back and forth with every word, waiting for any morsel of information that would divulge something personal about the new Orthopedic Attending's private life. To any onlooker the flirtation was obvious and teetered on the edge, threatening to cross the line into unprofessional. Little did Callie know, her light-hearted exchange with a familiar patient would transform into salacious gossip for the hospital rumour mill the moment the beady eyed resident's stepped foot out of the room.
One resident, clearly less interested in interfering in anyone's personal business cleared their throat, bringing Callie and her patient out of their bubble of flirting with a bang.
"Busted" Jen whispered as Callie snapped her hand away and stuffed it quickly into her lab coat pocket's, resuming her stoic persona the residents had become accustomed to.
"Perry, present." Callie boldly commanded in a failed attempt to draw the attention away from her blushing cheeks which were now beaming a vivid shade of red.
"Jen Sterman, 24, hereditary osteoporosis that caused a compression fracture at T-11 to T-12, scheduled for a percutaneous vertebroplasty with Dr Torres."
"I'll inject the bone cement right here into the vertebral body to restore its integrity,' Callie smiled as she pointed to the portable x-ray screen "then you'll be good to go. After this I do not want to see you back in my OR Miss Thing."
"Of course you do, you miss me…and all the surgeries on my bones too much"
"As much as I love surgery, you have a place at UDub that won't wait"
"I guess the only thing better than seeing you Callie"
"You are trouble. I will see you this evening."
Arizona sat at the nurse's station on the children's ward trying to catch up on her charting, the ward was unusually calm and she was taking full advantage of the down time. Alex Karev sat to her right reading a journal, clearly having the same idea she did. The two worked in comfortable silence; the fourth year resident was a promising student with a surprising talent for Pediatrics. He had grown to become a close colleague and sounding board in her time at Hopkins.
Just as she praised whatever world's had aligned to offer such a rare moment in their schedules, a gaggle of rowdy second year residents scurried past and congregated close to where the two doctors were perched. Their heads were huddled close as they chattered rapidly to each other blissfully unaware of their audience. Arizona knew better than to get involved in gossiping residents, nothing good could come from being the target for the rumour mill. She had first-hand experience of that, unpleasant was an understatement. She looked over to Alex and rolled her eyes dramatically, waiting for him to snigger, before continuing with her charting.
"And then they were holding hands!" A resident with tufts of black hair jutting out in every direction whispered excitedly.
"No way, with her patient?"
"Yeah, right in front of us! She must be getting it on with her."
Arizona wasn't one for getting involved in the gossip, but that didn't mean she couldn't listen in and since it looked like she wasn't getting any more charting done now anyway, what harm could it do to be privy to information on her new colleague's personal lives. Closing the chart she was working on, she sat back to listen in.
"Who are you guys talking about?" Another resident, who seemed to appear out of nowhere and joined the conversation with a peaked interest, asked.
"Oh man you missed it! Dr Torres is totally getting it on with her patient in 3219. Not that I blame her, that girl is hot!"
That definitely sparked the blonde's attention; she sat up straighter in her chair as Alex looked over at her enquiringly. Arizona hadn't exactly told Alex the nature of her relationship with Dr Torres, they weren't that close. Unsurprisingly, Alex had put two and two together when he found her 'stalking' said Orthopedic surgeon on social media and spent a little too long looking at a bikini photo.
Callie surely wouldn't jeopardize her career for a romantic relationship, would she? Arizona had to admit, she really didn't know Callie very well despite her profound desire to. Callie was a closed book since their night together and Arizona was desperate to get the woman to open up.
"Do you think Dr T is in there giving her a 'physical' before her op?" The group chuckled enthusiastically at the crude joke. Arizona felt an instant surge of jealous surge through her body at the indecent insinuation and experienced an instinctive urge to protect Callie.
"Maybe she'd let me give her a physical?" the resident with messy hair said suggestively.
Arizona clenched her pen with a tighter grip, she was sure if this woman was attractive in any way would let this man have a romantic relationship with her.
"Don't even try it 007, you'd get slapped with a lawsuit for just looking at a patient!" Arizona silently chuckled at this comeback from one of the female residents in the small group.
"Maybe I wasn't talking about the patient…"
At that comment Arizona snapped, her green eyed jealousy sprang into action, she couldn't sit back and have this young man insinuate anything sexual about Callie. She lunged out of her chair but before she could berate the young resident for his insensitive remarks about her crush, Dr Addison Montgomery beat her to it.
A tall, slender woman with luxurious auburn hair was a double board certified maternal-fatal surgeon and Arizona's surgical idol. When a fellowship at Johns Hopkins with Dr Montgomery came up, you did nothing short of begging to get a place. Addison's expensive high-heels made her tower over the group of residents and would render even the most confident man to a babbling buffoon.
"Are you aware of the great privilege you have being in this programme? Addison questioned the scruffy resident intensely.
"Uh – uh yes?" he fumbled, his face quickly turning red under the gaze of the fiery red headed surgeon.
"Is that a question or are you sure?"
"I- I I'm sure."
"Well if you're sure, do you think it's wise to be wasting that privilege gossiping on a ward full of sick children?" she quizzed resolutely.
Arizona chuckled quietly as the residents scurried off, tails between their legs. Alex still hadn't moved from his spot reading the journal. Clearly hospital gossip was not high on his priority list.
"What are laughing at Dr Robbins? Both of you follow me; we have a preemie with neonatal hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy." Arizona wiped the smirk off her face promptly and followed suit after her boss, she didn't plan on being on the receiving end of a scolding either.
After a busy lunch, Callie found herself in a quiet room looking over X-ray films. Most surgeons will tell you they chose surgery for the high, the rush and the thrill that comes from cutting someone open and saving their life. For Callie it was different, it was the quiet that drew her to surgery. It was the high that lured her to Ortho. Standing in the dark silent room she studied the views of a tibia injury, being an attending she often missed even the most minor injuries if it meant re-setting bones.
"If I'd known you were taken I wouldn't try so hard to get you on a date" the tranquility of the room was interrupted by a gentle but seductive voice coming from the doorway.
"Hi – um, uh okay. Taken? Uh, what-how did. Wait what?" Callie was startled by the blonde's accusation. It wasn't possible for Arizona to know about her past.
"Not that I blame you, she's attractive." Arizona said nonchalantly as she stalked towards the disconcerted woman.
"Arizona…how did you- who told you?" Callie spluttered, surely this wasn't happening.
"Wait its true?! Callie do you know how much trouble you could get into! Not to mention, I'm a little hurt I thought-" the Pediatric surgeon stopped dead in her tracks and started to pace as she ranted rapidly at the utterly perplexed Latina.
"Trouble?" Noticing Arizona was still rambling, she stood in front of the smaller woman, grabbed her by the shoulders to stop her pacing. "Arizona! What are you talking about? "What do you mean taken?" she was slowly losing patience being confused. Now standing in direct proximity to the stunning woman that she thought of so often, Callie found herself fighting the urge to lower her head and capture their lips in an embrace that would surely lead to a recreation of the night they met right here in the exam room.
"I assumed they made it up. The residents can't stop talking about you and Jen? I assumed it was a rumour I didn't think you were actually dating patient…you're not… right?" Bright cobalt eyes were boring into deep chocolate orbs searching for answers.
"No! No, God no. I've known Jen for a long time, the residents are just jerks. Jen is an old patient from New York; she flirts so that she can get chocolate mousse from the cafeteria after surgery. She is scheduled for a percutaneous vertebroplasty with me this afternoon." Callie chuckled reminiscing her engaging young patient's many antics with the nurses at New York Pres.
"Oh. So what did you mean 'who told me'? Are you seeing someone else?" Arizona couldn't help the interrogation; she knew it was coming from a place of jealousy which was far from attractive. She didn't like the idea of Callie seeing anyone else; it made her blood feel like it was boiling.
Sliding her hands down Arizona's arms sensually and interlinking their hands, Callie swiftly changed the subject, "Well…now that you mention it, this cute, perky blonde who's really sexy when she gets jealous basically harassed me until I agreed to go out with her tonight, does she count?"
Arizona could feel her heart rate spike, she glanced down at their joined hands and back to the deep brown eyes hovering just above her, she whispered "Oh really, how sexy?"
Callie couldn't resist the sexual tension any longer; there was no denying that she wanted this woman. Slowly she dipped her head to claim parted pink lips. Arizona's warm breath whispered across her features as she inched closer waiting for the denial that never came. Her blood thundered in her ears as she let desire overwhelm her senses and closed her eyes waiting for the spark of electricity to move through her as they kissed.
Just as their lips touched, the intrusive beeping of a pager snapped both women back to reality before they could share any more intimacy. "Damn it!" Callie complained, lifting her pager into view to condemn whoever was to blame for the rude interruption.
"Just ignore it." Arizona reciprocated, putting her hands around the Latina's neck in an attempt to regain the amorous moment that was slipping through her fingers.
Callie disentangled herself from the embrace begrudgingly, "I'd love to but I've got to give a college student her life back."
"Fine, go be awesome but hold that thought yeah?" she requested as Callie made her way to the door, the desire subdued but not eliminated between them.
Callie giggled at how cute the blonde looked when she was frustrated, "I'll see you at 8 Arizona." With a final wink, the unfamiliar but warm feeling of desire still present and the prospect of a date with Arizona Robbins, she all but skipped to the operating room.
