"Alright, easy!" Naruto called out as dozens of clones struggled with what they were carrying. "If you drop anything, I'll pop ya!" He warned as he ticked some boxes on his list.
"Yes, boss!" His clones chorused as they entered the house in a single file line. Each clone was carrying boxes upon boxes of items, from diapers to a stroller to baby formula. Since he had found out that Rei was pregnant, Naruto had been a giant bundle of nerves. He had no idea how to be a parent; he didn't even know how parents behaved due to his childhood. So, he was tackling fatherhood in the same way he tackled any problem of his.
With unending determination and extreme overkill.
Naruto was in the process of marching his clones into his house when Rei walked in with shopping bags of her own. She did not want to be coddled just because she was pregnant, but the most Naruto would let her carry was two bags. He was stubborn like that.
"Naruto, I told you it's too much," She approached him after keeping her bag on the table, "There are still eight months to go for the baby to arrive!"
Naruto turned to her with a sheepish smile. "I know, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared, ya know?" He then grew worried. "What if the diaper company goes bankrupt and the baby is used to their product? And if their favourite formula plant gets attacked by a villain? Oh no, we have to get more!" he scampered around the kitchen, making a new list.
Rei put both hands on his shoulders, making him stop. "Naruto-kun, listen to me," she sat him down on the table and smiled softly at him, "We're gonna be fine." She had no doubt about it. Naruto would be a very loving father, and she would be an excellent mother. Naruto was understandably anxious, but she would always support him as a spouse should.
Naruto's eyes widened at her words, then softened at the meaning behind her gentle gaze. "But what if-"
"But nothing. We are going to be great parents."
"But-"
"Nope!"
Naruto was about to make a timid retort, but a glare from Rei silenced him good. He then gently embraced Rei, making her squeak in surprise. "Thank you."
Rei nestled her head into the crook of his neck with a smile. "Always."
Rei was patrolling the city as part of her daily shift. Both she and Naruto had a route which they took each day to interact with the citizens and stop crime if they saw it.
It wasn't necessary per se, but Naruto always liked to volunteer and help the locals personally; it was who he was. She had since taken a liking to it as well, hence her own patrols.
Since she was barely in her first month, Rei had decided to keep working for the time being. Their agency served as a great deterrent, so the crime rate in their area wasn't that high. Even so, she had Naruto's Hiraishin Kunai to summon him if she ever found herself in actual combat.
Rei heard a faint creaking sound and looked up, only to immediately go on alert. A construction beam was hanging perilously from a crane, and it looked fit to fall at any time.
Erring on the side of caution, Rei evacuated the civilians until they were out of the strike zone of the beam, in case it fell. When the people saw that Blizzard was asking them to clear the way, they obeyed without complaint.
"Eek!"
Alarmed, Rei turned around to see a civilian on the ground right under the beam. She had tripped and fallen while walking, and her ankle was twisted. The woman looked to be about Rei's age, with dark green hair.
"Watch out!" Just as Rei warned the woman, the wire holding the beam snapped, and the mass of metal descended with great speed. The onlookers could only watch on in morbid shock as they waited for the woman to be crushed to death.
Rei had about five seconds until the beam made contact, which meant she had to think fast. Any ice construct she could make carried the risk of being damaged by the falling beam. It would then harm the civilian regardless, which would defeat the purpose of her intervention in the first place.
So, Rei decided not to block the beam at all. Instead, she would move the woman out of the way. At a flick of her hand, a large mass of fluffy, white snow appeared in a mini-avalanche, sweeping the woman along with it. The momentum and force of the impact were soft, so the woman was unharmed. She was moved safely to the side, her head poking out of the snow mound.
"Everyone brace!" Rei shouted as the beam reached the ground and embedded itself vertically into the sidewalk. The impact created a lot of dust and debris, which took some time to clear.
On regaining visibility, Rei was pleased to see that no one was harmed. By then, she could hear the sirens of first responders, who would deal with any legal work relating to the incident. She went to the green-haired woman, who was still in the snow pile. 'Cute', she thought, as the woman looked quite adorable with her head poking out and her teeth chattering due to the cold.
"Are you okay, miss?" Rei swiped her hand, which made the snow scatter. The woman, now free, looked at Rei with wide, teary eyes. Before Rei could react, the woman hugged her tightly and started crying.
"Uwaa! I was so scared!" She sniffled while clutching Rei's kimono, "Thank you, Miss Blizzard!" Rei just laughed awkwardly and patted her head, not knowing how to respond.
By now, a crowd had gathered near the two women, singing Rei's praises. The police were dealing with the construction company, leaving her with the aftermath.
"Blizzard is so strong!"
"As expected of the No.5!"
Rei waved at her adoring fans as they reminded her as to why she was a Pro- seeing the smiles on people's faces, helping those in need and making the world a better place. That was what a hero meant to Rei. She took a couple of pictures and gave out some autographs, which further increased her popularity in the public eye.
After the crowd dispersed, Rei found that the green-haired woman was still there. She was fidgeting nervously and blushing a lot, but Rei just attributed it to the snow.
"Can I help you, miss?"
The woman jumped in surprise. "A-ah, yes! I wanted to thank you again for saving me," She trailed off, poking her fingers. "Can I invite you for some tea? It's fine if you don't want to, and you probably have a lot of work, but you saved me, and I just- you know…" She looked worriedly at Rei as if asking for help in finishing her own sentence. She seemed to realize that one did not casually invite Pro Heroes out for tea, but the words had already left her mouth.
Rei smiled at her, finding her shyness adorable. She decided to go along with the request since her patrol was over anyway. "That would be great, as I am in the mood for some tea." She said, making the woman light up in joy. "I'm Rei. And you are?" She asked, extending a hand to shake.
The woman blushed again. "Oh! How rude of me!" She timidly shook the offered hand, "I'm Inko!"
'I like her. She seems fun.' Rei thought as they went to the nearest tea shop. She wondered where their future would lead them.
"Naruto, I'm off!" Rei announced as she prepared to head outside.
"Where are you going?"
"To Inko's," Rei replied, turning to face him. "We are browsing for more baby stuff together!" She grinned in excitement as she held up some catalogues.
Naruto chuckled fondly. "Have fun, dear. Say hi to Inko for me." When he had heard about Rei's new friend, Naruto had naturally been suspicious. Someone new wanting to befriend his wife while she was pregnant was enough cause to be wary. Who was it? A spy? An agent of All for One? He didn't want to be a downer, but the truth was that they had many enemies who would not stop at anything to hurt them. Better safe than sorry.
That all changed once he met Inko. The woman didn't have a single evil bone in her body, and she had no bad intentions or negative emotions towards either of them. Surprisingly, this information was volunteered by Kurama. The fox was equally protective of Rei and the baby, the big softy. Now, after four months, Rei and Inko were very close friends.
Naruto then remembered something he had to say. "Rei-chan, wait up!" He beckoned. Rei came and sat down next to him, after which he took out a black box. He gave it to her, making her furrow her brow.
"What's this?"
"Open it. It's a surprise!"
Rei rolled her eyes at his boisterous attitude. She opened the box to find a beautiful gold necklace. She gasped as she held it in her hand, admiring the craftsmanship. It was a pure gold chain with a green pendant, much like Naruto's own. A very simple design, but nonetheless beautiful.
"What is this for?" Rei didn't remember any important date being today, so she was confused.
Naruto took her hand in his and looked lovingly into her eyes. "It's just a little something to keep you and the baby safe."
Now, Rei knew Naruto. Naruto never did anything that could be called a 'little something'. So, she had to ask. "What does it do?"
Naruto's face lit up as he was dying to explain his latest masterpiece to his wife. He had worked tirelessly on the necklace and used every single Sealing Art in his arsenal.
"Well, it has my Hiraishin marker, in case you lose the knife."
Rei nodded, having predicted this.
"It also has seals on it, for both offence and defence, powered by a Senjutsu siphon seal." It was one of his greatest inventions. The necklace would draw natural energy from the environment to power itself, so Rei wouldn't need to do anything.
"What kind of seals?"
Naruto started bouncing up and down in his chair. He'd been waiting for this! "There are barriers, chakra barriers as well as wind and sand barriers, and they are extremely strong. Like, even Kurama would need a couple of hours to breach them." He listed off the used as he counted them on his fingers. "Oh, and only you can take it off, voluntarily."
Rei sweatdropped. "Isn't that a bit excessive?"
Naruto gasped and laid a hand on his chest. "Absolutely not! And that's not all. I've put some of Shukaku's chakra into it as well to strengthen it further. It'll also be keyed to your life force, so if you ever go into a critical state, It'll alert me so I can flash to you!"
Rei was getting more nervous as Naruto listed the characteristics of the necklace. Wasn't this necklace already the most secure piece of defensive equipment on the planet? "And what about the offensive part?"
Naruto perked up. "Oh, right! Clones." he nodded determinedly.
"Clones…?"
"Yup! I've also sealed five hundred clones into it to be released on command or in case of an emergency! It also has about six tails worth of my Yang chakra for healing and protection!"
"Tell her about me too." Kurama prodded. It's not like he was particularly interested or anything, but Naruto had pestered him so much that he was left with no choice. Kurama didn't care for these humans and their affairs. Absolutely not.
"Oh, yes! A part of Kurama's chakra is also there to burn off any toxins or diseases!"
Seeing as this was about to go out of hand, Rei stopped Naruto by placing a hand on his cheek. "Naruto, this is absurd. I'm not a child, you know?" she admonished.
"But-"
"If I wear this, I won't need to lift a finger to do anything. I'll never grow if I don't face challenges!" She was hurt that Naruto didn't think she could take care of herself. He had her best interests in mind, but that didn't make it sting any less.
Naruto was quick to retort. "It's not like that, ya know!" he protested, "I know you're strong, but this is just another tool to help you! If not for us, then what's the use of me learning so much Fuuinjutsu?"
Hearing that calmed Rei down. She could see where he was coming from, and it was not to baby her or be overbearing. "Oh. I thought that you gave me this because you thought I wouldn't be able to defend myself or something." She muttered. She loved him, but her pride was also immense. Much like her husband, Rei didn't like being underestimated.
"No, no, no!" Naruto waved his hands around frantically, "I always wanted to give this to you; the pregnancy just gave me a reason to complete it faster." He then turned serious and looked sternly at Rei. "Let's face it, Rei-chan. Many people would like to hurt us by using those close to us. And there is no one more important to me than the both of you." He stroked her baby bump gently, making her blush. "And we have to use every advantage we can get, ya know?"
"Hmm, I suppose you're right." Rei reluctantly agreed, "I'll only use it as a last resort, though, okay?" She glared at him, leaving no room for argument.
"Yes, dear." Naruto nodded meekly, making her smirk in victory. If Rei wore the necklace, he would be very relieved. He wanted nothing more than to keep his precious people safe, and he had spent countless hours toiling over the necklace for that very purpose. It would go a long way to make sure no one close to him ever got hurt again.
"No…!" Rei whispered with wide eyes, clutching her stomach.
Instantly, before she could blink, Naruto appeared at her side. "What? What happened?" He asked worriedly, checking Rei over for injuries. He was right across the hall when he heard her horrified whisper and dashed over immediately.
Rei just turned her shocked gaze to him, making Naruto even more anxious. "Naruto…"
"What? Tell me!"
"The baby…"
Naruto was practically vibrating in stress. "Yes?"
"The baby wants ramen!" Rei clutched her head dramatically as she lamented her fate. "Nooooo!"
Naruto face planted into the ground, his legs twitching in the air. He got up, rubbing his sore head. "Is that it? I thought you were hurt, Rei-chan!" he said in irritation.
Rei was taken aback at his tone and looked at him, eyes glistening with tears. "You're mad at me?" she muttered timidly. "I'm sorry!"
Naruto melted faster than a popsicle under Amaterasu. "Of course not, sweetie! How could I ever be mad at you?" He hugged Rei tenderly, making her sniffle against his shirt as she held him tightly. "I was just worried, ya know? You have nothing to be sorry about!" He soothed, trying to calm down his distressed wife.
Since Rei was well into her seventh month of pregnancy, her hormones and morning sickness had taken a toll on her. Not knowing what to do, Naruto had set dozens of clones to work and made them read every single pregnancy book under the sun. They mainly advised supporting your spouse and being understanding and empathetic towards their struggles.
Understanding and Empathetic were Naruto's middle names.
"Okay, I believe you." Rei nodded but didn't let him go. "I'm tired, carry me." she mumbled into his chest as she tightened her hold on him.
Naruto, being aware of the correct procedure, just lifted Rei into a bridal carry. She was already exhausted and snuggled into his embrace. "I'll make you some nice, hot ramen, Rei-chan. Would you like that?"
"Uh-huh," Rei affirmed sleepily in a small voice.
"Good. You wait here while I get it, okay?" Naruto said as he placed her on their bed. As he prepared to leave, he felt a hand grabbing his shirt. He looked back to see Rei shaking her head rapidly. "Rei-chan, I have to cook."
"No!" Rei protested, "Stay with me!" She didn't want to be alone right now, but she was also hungry. Her thoughts were all over the place, but she didn't want him to leave.
"But how will I-"
"Please?" Rei looked at him with wide, grey eyes as her bottom lip trembled. "For me?"
"Of course." Naruto agreed with a smile while he sent a clone to make their food. When she looked at him like that, he really stood no chance. Naruto joined her on the bed as Rei cuddled up against him. Neither of them said anything as they lay there. Naruto stroked her hair while she tried to sleep. The silence was comfortable and safe, as they merely basked in each other's company.
Looking to see if she was asleep, Naruto found her breathing softly against his side with her eyes closed. Smiling fondly at the sight, he pecked the top of her head as he wondered how lucky he was to be married to someone as wonderful as Rei. "Sleep well, Rei-chan, I love you." he whispered faintly, knowing that she was asleep. It didn't hurt to say it, though.
While he was reminiscing, Naruto missed the slight smile which bloomed on Rei's face as she dreamt of pleasant tomorrows.
"Ughhh!"
"Hold on, you're almost there!"
"Aghhh! How much more?!"
"Just a little, now push!" The doctor said urgently as she sat in front of Rei.
Rei, Naruto and the doctor were inside a hospital room, along with some nurses, and Rei was finally giving birth. When she had started feeling contractions, Naruto had called an ambulance to get her to the hospital. He could have gotten her there faster than the time it took him to make the call, but he didn't want to expose either Rei or the baby to such high speeds. They had some time to spare, anyway.
"You're doing great, sweetie. Just a little more, okay?" Naruto soothed while he held Rei's hand. She just nodded tiredly and said nothing else. Naruto was channeling some of his Yang chakra through his hand, which had a relaxing effect and made the delivery a lot easier for Rei.
There was a silence in the room, which was broken only by the cries of an infant. Rei slumped in the bed, exhausted, and the both of them were smiling in anticipation.
The doctor emerged with a small bundle, and Naruto had to cover his mouth with a gasp. "Congratulations, It's a healthy baby boy!" she said and handed him his child.
Naruto took him tenderly into his arms, almost in awe at the little life he held. His son. 'He's so tiny!' His son had his eyes closed, and his nose was twitching cutely from time to time. It was the most adorable sight Naruto had ever seen.
In his mind, Kurama was also watching intently. He wouldn't show it, but the fox was just as excited for the arrival of their new family member. However, his pride wouldn't allow him to say so. "Congratulations, Naruto."
Naruto walked over to Rei, who was beckoning him to give her the baby. He gently passed his son to his wife and relished in how her face brightened and shone with love. He was the luckiest man alive at the moment, and the two people in front of him were his everything, along with Kurama, of course.
Rei was holding her son, their son, with all the love she could muster. He was so cute, all swaddled up in his white blanket and sleeping softly. The child was a healthy weight with a full head of deep red hair. An Uzumaki, through and through.
"Oh, I got some dust in my eyes…" Naruto muttered as he wiped his eyes of 'dust' while he let out a few sniffles. "It even got into my nose, ya know?" He weakly tried to defend himself, but the doctor and Rei just smirked knowingly.
"I'll leave you guys to be alone, and a nurse will be by later with some food." saying her piece, the doctor left the room to give the couple some privacy.
After the door closed, Rei turned to Naruto and showed him the sleeping baby. "Look, Naruto, he's our son."
Even though Naruto was the first to hold him, he was still just as excited. He scooted closer to Rei and sat at the side of her bed. "He has red hair…" Naruto muttered with wide eyes. He always loved his clan's red hair, and he was glad that his son would have that particular hair colour.
"He's adorable, isn't he?" Rei asked softly, rocking the sleeping baby. "Our son, our Touya."
A/N- Done.
This story is not action-oriented. There might be some fights, but I'm not paying too much attention to the power scaling. It's too tedious to compare and rank characters, and no one unanimously agrees with any scaling anyway.
