Her footsteps slammed against the ground in a furious gallop, trying to put as much distance between him and her as possible. The icy night was like pitch, as clouds obscured the light of the moon. The woods were alive with sounds of the nocturnal creatures either watching their prey or being the prey. The snow-covered ground was still so bright along the ground, which made it easier to see where her feet landed. Her heart hammered in her chest wildly, straining to pump enough blood to fill her adrenaline filled veins. Her breaths were jagged, the mist of her breath hitting the frozen air, creating puffs of clouds as she ran was the only way to see the cold. She tripped over a branch, landing into the blinding snow. She scrambled to her feet, hearing the thundering of footsteps behind her. She had to get away, just had to.
"Bella, I can hear your heartbeat. You can't run from me," The grizzly voice called out to her into the night. The tone itself was light, almost like bells, but Bella knew that he was dangerous, that he would kill her, steal her power for himself.
She continued to run, her lungs burning with the over exertion, and her arms and legs felt numb because of the cold. But she continued to run as hard as she could and as fast as she could, so she could escape. Escape with her life.
The alarm sounded, waking Bella up, but she jolted awake anyways. Sweat beaded on her forehead, and she looked around her room, a little disoriented at first, but she blinked a few times, before getting out of bed, and going to the bathroom. She turned on the shower, letting the steam fill the room before she got in. It was early still, and she wondered why she would have a dream like that. It was strange, oddly familiar, like she had been there before. Being chased, running like her life depended on it. It wasn't the first time she had some similar dreams, like her mind was trying to tell her something.
She got out of the shower, and pulled on her regular clothes. It was Friday, and so it was half a day today at the school, before Bella had to come home, and change in time for the Winter Formal. She told Jace that she would meet him there, because she was driving with her sisters, and he agreed.
Once she was dressed, her hair braided carefully in place, she grabbed her bag, and slipped on her shoes, and out the door she went. She grabbed a banana on her way out the door with coffee, and got into her Land Rover. Her sisters were not going to school today, because they were princesses, and needed more time to prepare for the winter formal. Not Bella, she probably was going to put on her dress, keep her hair the same, and maybe mascara.
Forks High was not as deserted as she thought when she pulled up. She got out, slinging her bag over her shoulder and grabbing her coffee, she set out to walk across the icy parking lot, getting used to foot placement. She wondered if she should try to learn enough magic, so maybe she could be like Jace, and just heat the pathway, so she never had to slip or slid again. She reached the sidewalk, looking down at it, and sighing before stepping up easily, and waiting a beat before walking towards the door. She felt proud that she hadn't fallen with her coffee in her hands. Not like the previous morning. She went to her locker first, shoving her bag in there for the time being.
"Ah, you made it. No coffee stains." Jace called to her, smiling as he walked over. He leaned against the locker next to hers.
"Hmm. Well, I'm getting used to the feel of ice under my feet. We will never speak about yesterday." Bella reminded him. She had slipped, fallen, and her coffee went everywhere. Fortunately, Alice had a change of clothes in her locker, for an odd reason, and so Bella was able to change before first period.
Jace chuckled. "Okay, okay. Are you ready for tonight?"
"Define ready?"
"It's just a silly dance." Jace reminded her. "Tell you what, we make an appearance, then we ditch and go have dinner somewhere."
"Deal." Bella said, clear relief on her face.
Jace smiled. "You are the strangest girl, I've ever met."
"Yes, I am strange. It's why you're my only friend." Bella teased as they walked to homeroom.
At lunch, Bella went home, her sisters already home from the hair salon. Bella never understood what the big deal was. It was a high school dance. Nothing fancy, but her sisters thought it was, so she wouldn't make fun of them for having fun.
"Bella!" Alice said. "I picked up your dress. It is beautiful! Did you pick it out?"
"No, mom did." Bella said, and set her keys on the hook. "We have like four hours until the dance."
Alice shook her head. "Beauty takes time. Come on. I'll do your hair, and Clarissa can do your makeup."
Bella sighed. "Do we have to?"
"Yes," Clarissa and Alice said at the same time.
Bella let them lead her away against her will.
Four hours later, Bella looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair was tumbling down in curls, and her eyes were smokey, and screamed seduction. Her sapphire eyes matched her dress, as it hugged her perfectly, dipping down low in the back, but the nude see-thru material made Bella feel more comfortable. She slipped on the low, black sparkly heels, and then Alice put on the black faux fur shaw. The slit up her dress came up to mid thigh, and she work a sparkly sheer tights that were nude, the color of her skin.
"You are hot." Alice murmured, looking at her sister. Alice had wore black, a dress similar to Bella's, and Clarissa wore emerald green. Her's was long and flowing too, but the slit was all the way up to her hip, and the side on her dress was punched out, exposing the milky flesh above her hip.
"We all look hot," Clarissa said, smiling wide.
Bella was amazed at how beautiful she looked. She didn't think that she could look this way, and it did make her feel good. "Wow." She murmured.
Jocelyn walked in, gasping, and bringing her hands up to her mouth. "Oh, my girls. You are all so beautiful." She gushed.
Bella turned, looking at her mom, smiling. "This dress really is beautiful mom. Thank you."
"Of course. Alright group together, pictures." Jocelyn said, taking her phone out of her pocket. Bella was in the middle, Alice on one side of her, and Clarissa on the other side. Jocelyn snapped their picture and looked at it. They looked like the incredible witches they were. She teared up a little. She had a bunch of pictures like this, over the years. She got to relive their high school years over and over again like this and this was by far, the best picture yet. "Alright, go have fun. I'll see you guys back at home at 1AM." She said and kissed them all on the cheek.
Bella walked out to her Land Rover, getting in, with her sisters filing into the car after her. She let out a breath, and then drove back towards the school.
When they arrived at the school, a bunch of people were already there. Bella got out, her foot hitting the pavement. She grabbed the black sparkly clutch that Alice told her to bring, sliding her keys, wallet, and phone in it, she closed her door. Alice and Clarissa linked their arms with hers and they walked towards the school. Bella was shocked to see Alice melting a pathway for them. She only winked at her sister, and they got to the front doors. Jace was standing in the lobby of the school, his hand in his pocket casually. He was wearing a suit, his vest was a deep sapphire blue, and so was his bow tie. He was talking to Jasper Whitlock, who had ordinarily been quiet, but Jace and Jasper were descent friends. He glanced up, and then did a double take.
"Wow." Jace murmured, his eyes landing on Bella. He had to admit that Clarissa was stunning as always, but he had been down that path before, the familiar hurt or pain surfacing in his chest, but he pushed it away, ignoring it. But Bella was gorgeous. She looked so strong, and brave, and just…. every bit of the witch he knew she was.
Bella blushed a little. "I take it by the look on your face, I look, okay?"
"Okay? Bella, you are gorgeous." Jace murmured, still in a daze at how beautiful she was.
Jasper smiled slightly. "Herondale, I'll catch you later," he said, his voice deepened with a Texas twang. He walked away, going towards the gym. Clarissa and Alice flitted off to find their own dates, leaving Bella there with Jace.
"Thank you. I can't take credit though. I was held down against my will by my sisters, and they made me into this," Bella said motioning to her face with her free hand.
"Well, I'll thank them later. You are stunning, no matter what, but that dress is amazing." Jace complemented, and then held his arm out. She smiled and slipped her hand over his arm, not realizing his arms were that toned, but she didn't say anything, only smiled and walked with him into the gym, where everything was so dazzling, and magical. She would expect no less from a school for the supernatural.
The music was actually really good, Bella had to admit. She felt really relaxed, standing next to Jace. They wandered in, getting something to drink, and just watching others dance.
Soon Clarissa walked up, smiling bright. "Oh Bella, isn't it just beautiful?"
"It is. Where's your date?" Bella asked.
"Oh, he didn't show," Clarissa said with a shrug. "It's fine. I'm sure Jace could offer me a dance right?"
Jace nearly choked and looked at Bella who smiled at him. "Sure." He said, smiling, trying not to panic inside. The memories trying to blindside him, but he kept his smile plastered to his face, hoping that no one could see the strain.
As promised, when the song changed, Jace took Clarissa out onto the dance floor. Bella smiled as she watched her sister light up, smiling wide as Jacer twirled her around.
"You look beautiful," Magnus' voice sounded from beside her.
She looked over at him. "Thank you." She looked up into his dark eyes. Something about Magnus seemed familiar to her. She wasn't sure why, but she liked the sense of being safe for some reason. Because it felt like when she was near him, she was safe. It was an odd feeling to have for someone that she barely knew. She glanced over his shoulder and saw a shadow flicker into the hall. It sent a shiver down her spine. She felt the déjà vu wash over her. Like she had been here before, like this had happened before.
"Are you okay?" Magnus asked, taking in the look on her face.
"I just…"She looked towards the hall. She decided to check it out. It was silly, she knew, but…she had to check. She walked towards the hall, and Magnus followed her. She crept into the darkness of the hallway, it was barely illuminated by the cascading lights from the gym.
"Bella…"Magnus murmured against, but she shushed him, as she kept walking down the long corridor. The crescent scar on her wrist illuminated now, which caused her to look down at it, frowning.
"Oh no," Magnus muttered, "Bella get behind me." He said, and then he moved his hands, a purple mist following his movements as he sent an energy blast towards the shadow. Bella got behind him like he instructed. The energy blast hit a guy, sending him backwards, but a red mist appeared, like someone was teleporting. "Bella….run. Run, and don't stop running." He said.
"Magnus I-"
"Go now!" Magnus said, his voice stern.
Bella turned and ran back towards the gym. She ran into Jace, hitting his chest with a thud, and she fought against him.
"Calm down, what's wrong?" Jace said, quickly, his eyes looking at her concerned.
"Magnus, he's fighting someone he-"
Jace looked towards the hallway. "Run. Hide somewhere. Do not be here. Get your sisters out. All three of you. I can't protect all of you and help Magnus at the same time. Find Jasper if you can. Tell him Caius is here."
Bella nodded, watching Jace rush off into the hallway. She turned and ran, finding Alice and Clarissa. "We have to go now." Jasper happened to be standing there. "Jasper. Jace said that Caius is back."
Jasper got a serious look on his face. "Get your sisters to safety." He said immediately, and then he phased out, a green mist replacing him.
"What's going on?" Clarissa and Alice asked at the same time.
"We have to leave. We have to leave now." Bella said quickly, taking their hands in hers. They rushed out of the school, their feet hitting the pavement in synch.
They heard a blast behind them, and it caused them to look back. Red and purple mist tangled together as it flew up into the air.
"Bella, what is happening?" Clarissa asked, more frantic.
Bella stared back at the clash between Magnus, and who she knew now as Caius. Her head rang, and hurt, and her hands flew up, holding both sides, as she grit her teeth, the pain sharp and unyielding. Flashes ripped through her mind, memories of her life before she knew. Her sisters, before now. She didn't understand as the pain ripped through her. She doubled over at her waist, and groaned, the pain increasing.
Alice and Clarissa looked at Bella in shock, not sure what to do.
Suddenly the pain ceased, and Bella opened her eyes, the deep sapphire illuminating almost a crystal blue now. She gasped, sucking in a breath, as she felt the surge of power rush through her. Nothing like she had ever felt before.
"Bella…your eyes…" Alice murmured.
Bella looked at Alice. "Take Clarissa. Take my car, get mother. Tell her that Caius Voltari is here, and he's found me. Tell her that I know everything. Tell her that we need her here fast."
Alice started shaking her head. "No, no. Jasper said that- "
"Go!" Bella said, her voice forceful. She turned, focusing on the school, and then flashed their using the old power that was hidden from her for so long.
Jace looked up at her as she flashed into view. "Bella- "
"You, don't talk." Bella said sharply. She turned towards Magnus as he flashed backwards, stumbling as his feet hit the ground, but Bella caught him.
"Bella you should be far away right now…" Magnus panted out, he looked at her, seeing the crystal blue in her eyes, and realized what had happened. "You…"
Bella nodded. "Stand behind me." She said, and then she moved her hands, chanted something, as a silver energy started to engulf her hands, she levitated upwards, staring straight ahead at Caius. "Jasper, duck!" She commanded, and she thrust her hands forward, and the silver energy flew out towards Caius in a swirling mass. Jasper ducked out of the way, and Caius threw his hands forward, the red energy trying to take over.
"You have awakened!" Caius called towards her.
Bella didn't give him the satisfaction of answering back. "Magnus, now." She muttered, and Magnus did a motion with his hands, and thrust them out, his energy backing hers. Jace, and Jasper followed suit, before Bella broke contact, only to chant another spell.
"Extiorus Aveus!" She called, and then Caius frowned, as her energy hit him. He vanished, the spell would be temporary, which meant that they needed to reinforce the town. She temporarily expelled him from the area. The time limit on that wasn't going to be more than a day. She sucked in a breath, as she felt drained, but she was still standing.
Jace turned towards her, brushing a hand through his hair. "Bella I-"
"Don't." Bella held up a hand, her eyes turning towards him sharply. "You lied to me."
"I didn't-"
"No, you lied to me, and you kept things from me. You thought because my father wipes my memories every twenty-five years was going to protect you."
Jace swallowed. "Let me explain."
"She was hurting too." Bella looked at him. "She was hurting too, and you left her like that. Left her all alone to grieve. Father wiped her memories of it, but I remember now."
Magnus looked at Bella. "Bella, we really should go somewhere and talk."
Bella turned and looked at him, hands on her hips. "Ciamar a b 'urrainn dhut?" (How could you?") She spoke in Gaelic.
Magnus looked over at Jace, who had now clue how to speak Gaelic, not like he did. "Dh 'fheuch mi ri bruidhinn ris a-mach às, grunn thursan. Mar a rinn do mhàthair." (I tried to talk him out of it several times. As did your mother.)
"Dà cheud bliadhna." (Two hundred years.) She said, her voice shook a little.
"Tha fios agam. Tha mi duilich." (I know. I'm sorry.) Magnus voice was soft, calm. He looked at her. It was true that it had been two hundred years since he talked to Carlisle last. Had tried to tell him that it was unnecessary, but he was so sure that Caius would find her easier when her power wasn't hidden. Magnus wanted her to learn to control her abilities, to hone them, and become stronger. She was a Witch of the Eclipse. As were her sisters. They were strong as well. All it took was a removing of a block for them to fully remember their powers, but their power was stable. Bella had kissed death, so her powers became unhinged. The shadows tried to claim her, but Jocelyn wouldn't have it. Caius would not steal Bella away.
Bella was actually 309 years old, born in 1712.
Jasper closed his eyes. "Aldertree, is having the fairies fix the school." He said and then opened his eyes. "The dance is closed down. They moved the others to safety when Caius burst through the wall."
Magnus nodded. "We need to get to work on the wards. Bella's spell won't hold him for long."
Bella sighed, closing her eyes, exhaustion rocking her, she swayed, and Magnus caught her against him.
"Easy." Magnus murmured softly. "You used a lot of energy."
"I know." Bella snapped. She opened her eyes to see her mother rushing in. Her sisters weren't with her. Jocelyn rushed towards her. "Stop."
Jocelyn stopped, tears brimming her eyes. "Bella…I…"
"Mom…I'm okay." Bella said gently, and then she pushed away from Magnus and walked towards her mom, her arms going around her, and Jocelyn hugged her tight, letting the tears fall.
"I only want you to be safe. I don't want- "
"I know…" Bella murmured. "I know. Let's get the wards up. We have to before…before he comes back."
Jocelyn nodded, looking up at Magnus. "I thought Ragnor put wards up."
"He did. Caius broke them. He can't possibly be that powerful." Magnus said with a sigh and looked around. "We'll do our best, but our wards aren't holding for long it seems."
"Then we rotate them out. Replace wards every 48 hours." Bella said, leaning on her mom, because she felt a little weak.
Jasper tilted his head, thinking. "That's a lot of energy to go through. We don't have enough warlocks or witches with that kind of power."
Bella nodded. "You have me, my sisters. We are the Witches of the Eclipse. Use us."
"No, we couldn't put you in anymore danger." Jace said.
Jocelyn looked at Jace, her eyes softened. Despite the past, she still knew that he was in pain too. Men just…had a funny way of showing it. "Jace is right. We couldn't- "
"We can. I'm tired of running mom. We've been running for nearly 300 years. I know you and dad think that my powers are too unstable because of what happened when I was 9, but I'm telling you…I'm fine. If we're going to make a home here. If we're going to protect all the other young witches that came here for a haven, or a place to live without fearing the worse, then we need to be able to take Caius out, once and for all." Bella reasoned.
Jocelyn knew that she was right. If they continued to hide and run, Caius would just kill that many more witches, siphoning their power and becoming stronger every day. "Okay, no more secrets."
Bella nodded. "No more secrets."
