Chapter 4

Toph

Toph dodged and pushed through the crowd. She had had enough of this wedding. The longer she was in the same room as Sokka, the more it hurt, and the more she was breaking. She stepped outside when the tears began to come. She started to run.

Rain was pouring down, soaking her hair and her dress, but she kept going, sobs beginning to rock through her body. It took everything in her to say no, and she almost wished she would've danced with him. It has to be this way. She told herself. If you want to ever move on and live without him, it has to be this way.

She kept running, the smell of rain on pine hitting her nose, when she suddenly stopped. Someone was running towards her. Not just someone-Sokka.

"Toph! Toph!" He called after her. She hesitated for a moment, her resolve weakening, and started running again. She silenced her sobs and let her tears stream silently while the rain washed them away.

"Come on Toph! Slow down!" He called after her. Her only response was a wall of rock in front of him, which he barely dodged. It went on like this, her throwing up walls and him chasing her, almost like old times. Toph was just waiting for him to give up, but he didn't. He kept calling, and running, and dodging, even when she threw small rocks at him. Anger began to flare through her.

"Please- Please Toph. I want to know why." His voice broke, and it shattered her into pieces. She stopped.

"You want to know what." She said, harshly.

"Why are you running from me?" He said, walking towards her, still behind her.

"Maybe because women don't want to talk to a man who is chasing her." A long pause stretched out between them.

"I'm sorry." He finally said, his voice low and heavy. Those 2 simple words rang through the air, mixed with the rain, and drove straight into Toph's heart. They were filled with years worth of unspoken hurt, and as much as Toph wanted them to heal her, as much as she begged them to give her closure, they ripped her seams, and she was bleeding out, right in front of him.

She just stood there, facing away from him. She could hear his breath shaking. They stood like that for a while. She didn't know how to respond. What was he saying sorry for? Was it for marrying Suki? For never noticing Toph? Did he regret it now?

"Why'd you stop writing to me, Toph?" He asked her. She didn't answer. She felt his heartbeat rise and his chest begin to heave. He was getting angry.

"Don't you think I deserved more than that!?" His voice began to rise. He ran to where he was facing her. She just shrugged her shoulders, wishing the conversation could be done.

"You haven't talked to me in 5 years Toph! Why? What did I do!?"

"Nothing Sokka! Nothing!" She said, finally speaking. "Please, just go."

"NO!" He yelled. Rain dripped off his nose and Toph could see the outline of his muscles as his shirt clung to his body. "If you're going to walk away from me, and never speak to me again and just keep going like the way we have been for the past 5 years, fine. Do it. But tell me why! Give me an explanation, at least."

"No." Toph said, turning away from him and beginning to walk. He grabbed her wrist. His touch sent a spark wave through her and left her head spinning. "Leave this alone Sokka!"

"You're just going to walk away, like a coward?" He said, dropping her wrist. "FINE THEN. I guess I finally know how much I meant to you. You're just selfish, Toph. Selfish. And you're cold, and inconsiderate if you want to treat me like this. You know what, maybe you just have no feelings at all!"

Toph's cheeks heated with anger, and rage bubbled up inside of her, but she kept walking.

"Yeah. Walk away. That's all you do." Her rage was held back by a thin string, a thin string he just cut.

"FINE SOKKA. You want to know what you did? You made me LOVE you. You made me HOPELESSLY and DESPERATELY IN LOVE WITH YOU AND YOU MADE ME HAVE EVERY OTHER SICKENING AND DISGUSTING FEELING TOWARDS YOU, AND THEN- THEN YOU JUST WENT AND GOT MARRIED!

"AND YOU DARE CALL ME UNFEELING? WHEN ALL I'VE DONE FOR THE PAST 5 YEARS IS DONE NOTHING BUT FEEL AND-"

"Toph." He said, walking towards her.

"BREAK EVERY SINGLE DAY AND KILL MYSELF WITH DREAMS THAT WILL NEVER COME TRUE! AND-"

"Toph. Listen."

"NO SOKKA. YOU WANTED TO KNOW SO HERE IT IS. I STOPPED WRITING BECAUSE I CAN'T LISTEN TO YOUR WONDERFUL LIFE WITH SUKI WITHOUT BEING RIPPED TO PIECES AND YOU REALLY-"

"Toph! Listen!"

"WANT TO SAY THAT ALL I DO IS WALK AWAY? I HAVE TO WALK AWAY SOKKA! I HAVE TO WALK AWAY IF I WANT TO MAKE IT OUT OF THIS CONVERSATION ALIVE! THEN YOU-"

"TOPH I'M NOT MARRIED!"

Toph stopped, her words caught in her throat. "Wha-What?"

"I never married Suki." She stood there, blinking at him, saying nothing. She couldn't believe her ears. Her head spun. She couldn't do anything but stand and stare, convinced that this was just another one of her dreams.

"But-But I- I thought that-" Suddenly, she was interrupted by Sokka's hand on her chin, pulling her towards him.

Their lips collided, wet from the rain, sending shockwaves through Toph's body. Sokka ran his muscular arm around Toph's waist pulling her in closer. He kissed her gently, rough lips from years in the cold southern tribes molding against her smooth ones, but yet the kiss was urgent, as if he was making up for years of lost time. She soaked in every square inch of him, wrapping her arms around his neck and melting right along with the rain, 5 years worth long of yearning exploding all at once between them. Toph ran her hands through his hair, twisting it through her fingers. When she pulled away for air, her heart was racing. They stayed standing with their foreheads together, electricity ricocheting where their skin met.

From that day forward, never again would Toph's beautiful dreams be heartbreaking, and never again would Sokka have a nightmare without Toph right there to chase them away.
