Chapter 4 Getting Nowhere
"If Selvig is right, then we should be coming up on the site soon," Saphira said; she was sitting in the front passenger seat, Jane was driving, and Enid and Thor were sitting next to each other in the back. Thor was sitting so close to her; his leg was touching hers.
Enid had been so surprised by Thor's sudden appearance; she thought back to when she lift Asgard. Thor had not shown up that day on the Bifrost to tell her goodbye, before now last time she had seen Thor was the night before when she had fallen asleep next to him in bed when she had awoken the following day, her father's rebellion had already started when the sound of battle startled Enid awake Thor had already dressed and left his chambers.
Enid had changed out of her dressing gown and went to see what was going on; she couldn't believe what she was seeing, there were battles everywhere, unaware it was her father and thinking her family was safe at home, Enid went running down the corridor to try and find Thor, that's when two guards had come up to her and wanted to fight her, not understanding why Enid had just stood there trying to talk to them, in her confusion, she would have let them get the better of her, but before they could say or do anything they fell to the ground asleep.
Frigga had come upon them on her way to find Enid; she had cast a spell on the guards and grabbed Enid's hand and ran with her toward the Bifrost, where her sister and mother were already waiting for her; Saphira, to Enid's surprise had her arms around Loki's waist holding on to him tightly while she was crying into his shoulder. Enid's mother was relieved to see Enid was okay and hugged her tightly. After voicing her confusion about what was going on, she asked about her father, then got surprised when Saphira said the battle was all his doings and how she hated him and would never forgive him for everything he did. Loki had tightened his grip on Saphira as she laid her head back on his shoulder, moments later; her mom had hugged them, said she loved them, asked Frigga to forgive her and see her daughters got off-world safely before running back up the bridge to be by her husband's side.
Thor didn't show up to see Enid off, try to stop her, say he loved her nothing, for the longest time, Enid had been jealous of Saphira getting to tell Loki bye, of them getting one last kiss, of the tears Loki had in his eyes when he asked Saphira to wait for him, right before they were risked away on the Bifrost. Thor had never shown up and shown any of that for Enid. However, a part of her understood why he was fighting and hadn't known she was fleeing Asgard.
Enid looked over at Thor; who was watching out the window; she had tried to convince herself many times, she was over him, over what happened, but seeing Thor here now, having shown up out of the blue, Enid was still very much in love with the God of Thunder, and had no idea how to feel about that, yeah Enid missed Asgard, but had a business, Enid had worked hard and took years to get where she was now, Enid didn't want to leave any of that behind. Besides, Odin may not even allow them back on Asgard when Thor was allowed to go back.
Enid turned away and wondered if she had to would she be willing to give up her business for him, could she keep it and go back to Asgard, come down once in a while and check on things, or would Thor be willing to stay on Midgard with her. If they couldn't fix his banishment, he would be stuck down here anyway, but if they could, would he be willing to wait. Or if they could go back and forth, she could hire someone to run the casino for her. A lot of business owners did that. She could check in a couple of times a year.
"Not much farther." Saphira suddenly said since she sat in the front seat, Saphira had taken over reading the map and given Jane directions.
"Just up the hill, I think," Jane answered. "This area looks familiar, so we should be getting there."
"Just think, sister, we are so close to going home," Saphira spoke up. "Back to Asgard, we'll get to see all our friends, Queen Frigga and Loki."
At the mention of seeing Loki, Saphira's eyes light up, and she smiled; she looked happier than Enid had seen her in a very long time. And she felt bad for her sister; she had a feeling she may be getting her hopes up. Even they made it to Asgard, would Odin allow them to stay.
Enid had been wondering about Loki; where was he? Yes, Thor was banished, but the Loki they knew back in the day would have shown up to check on Thor. It would give him an excuse to try and find Saphira. Would Odin allow Loki to visit? Why hadn't either of them kept the promise to get them in the century they have been on Midgard. Enid had a feeling it was Odin's doing, and for her sister's sake, she hoped they would be at least allowed to visit Asgard once Thor was allowed to go back. If not, Saphira would be so heartbroken. Maybe Loki would be willing to live down here, too, if it came to it.
Enid had thought she had forgiven her parents long ago, but everything going on now was starting to bring back the anger she had felt toward them, especially her father, for causing all this to happen in the first place. Enid had been closer to her father than Saphira. He introduced her to people as his pride and joy, she was so bright and a good fighter, he was so happy, or at least put an act on like he was when Enid got with Thor, the future king of Asgard, is what her father always referred to Thor as.
Saphira had been closer to their mother, and she and their father always fought. Saphira was too wild, too feral, needed to learn how to sit still, keep her mouth closed and be more ladylike their father would say. Would tell Saphira she needed to be more like her sister, which would make Saphira angry. And for some reason, her father hated Loki, disapproved of Saphira's friendship with him so much that she hid it from her parents and everyone else when she and Loki had become more than friends. Enid and Thor had had their suspicions, which was confirmed when Thor went looking for them one day to find Loki training Saphira how to fight with daggers; he watched them a moment, and at one point, they started kissing, and Thor left. Enid and Thor decided to respect their wishes and had not told anyone they knew, even Loki and Saphira themselves. Thor had been happy that his brother had gotten the girl he had been in love with most of his life; Enid was delighted for her sister, but feared what would happen if their father found out.
Enid didn't know if her father ever knew or not; there was a period, few months before the rebellion that Saphira seemed to grow from dislike of their father to downright hate, whenever Enid saw her at the palace, which was rare by then, and if he were brought up for any reason Saphira's mood would turn very dark, almost frightening, so maybe he did find out. They fought more, probably why she wasn't seen at the palace much around that time; though Thor had told her Loki and Saphira took to hanging out in Loki's chambers and gave up their usual haunts in the libraries and gardens.
"Living on Asgard will be so much better than last time we were there." Saphira said, "Now that father won't be there."
"Sister." Enid gasped, surprised. "I know you and Father didn't get along, but you speak as if you are glad he is dead."
Enid felt a cold chill go down her spine when Saphira said nothing to deny or defend her feelings; her expression turned dark, and she turned to look out the passenger side window.
"Father was an asshole; I hated that man, still do," Saphira mumbled as she crossed her arms, her happy mood disappearing.
"Saphira, I know father could be a jerk at times, and he was against you and Loki, and yes, he is the reason we've been on Midgard for hundred years, but he was still your father, you cannot possibly be glad that he is dead," Enid said, fearing her little sister was turning too dark.
"Did you just say for a hundred years?" Jane demanded; they ignored her as Saphira turned in her seat to look at Enid.
"Jean Luc LeBeau, you remember him, right?" Saphira demanded; Enid gave her a nod. "All I did was befriend his son, and he welcomed me into his family, and I only knew him for five years, and he treated me more like a daughter in those short five fucking years than Bard, did the nine hundred and forty-five years I lived on Asgard."
"Did you say nine hundred and forty-five years?" Jane demanded. Again they ignored her.
"Sister." Enid tried.
"I don't want to talk about it anymore, Enid," Saphira said. Before Enid could reply, Jane suddenly slammed on her breaks, and if Saphira hadn't been quick enough to through her arm out, she would have hit the dashboard.
"What's going on," Jane asked. "Where did all those people come from?" They all looked out the windows at all the people and cars parked all over across the street. Off in the distance, you could see tent-like things site up all over the field, and to Enid's shock, Saphira's wrecked car was sitting on the back of a wrecker parked next to one of them
"They have my car." Saphira cried, "Probably stole our stuff out of it too."
"I'm going to find my hammer," Thor said, and he opened the van door to get out.
"Wait!" Enid said, gently grabbing Thor's arm; he paused getting out and looked at her. "There are too many people there at the moment; maybe we should make a plan, so we aren't seen or heard."
"Why?" Thor asked, "I could go through all of them."
"Yes, you probably can, but it's not necessarily," Enid said. "Plus, how are you going to find Mjolnir and fight at the same time?"
"You have a point." Thor frowned. "Then what should we do?"
"We can come back when it gets dark," Jane suggested. "Go back to my lab and wait; we might even be able to find out who they are."
"I don't give a shit who they are." Saphira said, "I just want my stuff."
"We'll come back when it's dark." Enid decided, and Thor shut the door. "Maybe find a back road and come from behind; it'll be easier to hide in the dark, sneak in, and everyone or almost everyone might be gone by then."
"Wait!" Saphira cried, stopping Jane from pulling out again. "That is the third time you almost kill me, so, you are no longer allowed to drive, I am."
"But it's my van." Jane tried to argue, Saphira ignored her, and opened the door and climbed out; she then walked around the front to the driver side, given Jane no other choice but to climb over into the passenger seat so Saphira could get in the driver seat, she slammed the door shut then pulled out, driving down the road a bit, then turned and headed the way the had come.
"I'm still amazed at how fast those people got to that site," Darcy said. They had all been back at Jane's for a while now, eating food they bought from across the street; Enid was seated next to Jane, who was explaining her research to her as they ate, and Saphira and Thor were sitting at the same table across from each other.
"Maybe you guys should forget about going back there." Selvig said, "I don't like the sound of those guys. Has to be government."
"We can't ." Saphira answered," They have our stuff, you guys don't have to be involved in this, but Enid, Thor, and I have to go back."
"Look," Selvig said. "I understand you guys want your stuff, and I may not know you, so I don't know how you think, but is a few pieces of clothes and hammer worth going to prison over?"
"You are right." Saphira said, "You don't know us, or else you would know we have nothing to fear; Thor, my sister, and I can easily take out all those people."
"Okay, I am sorry, but this is getting ridiculous." Selvig said, crumbling his sandwich wrapper, "You calming you three can take out all those feds, and most likely military people there too is laughable."
"You can laugh all you want, Dr. Selvig," Enid answered. "We'll be leaving once we can get Thor's hammer and our luggage anyway, so it does not matter."
"This is all crazy," Selvig mumbled. Shoving his food wrappings into the bag they came in, then took a sip of his coffee. "You three seem like friendly folks, but you're crazy."
"Which your words, Midgardain," Saphira warned. "We are far more..."
"Sister," Enid spoke up. "Dr. Selvig is within his rights to believe or say what he wants." Saphira glared at her sister but went silent, and Enid was relieved that she listened to her; it was rare, but it did happen sometimes.
"Doesn't matter anyway," Saphira said, pushing her food away. "We'll be going back to Asgard any day now, won't have to see this wretched realm ever again."
Enid sighed and stopped eating, and she stood up and walked to a window and just stood looking out it. She stood there, lost in her thoughts for a few minutes before Thor joined her; she nearly jumped startled when he laid his hand on the lower part of her back.
"Even after all this time, I can still tell what is worrying you," Thor spoke quietly.
"Really?" Enid asked. "And what might that be?"
"You are not sure about going back to Asgard," Thor answered, surprising Enid.
"It's been so long," Enid answered. "Would we even be welcomed there?"
"I'm not sure." Thor admitted, "Father banned you two from Asgard; forbade everyone from going to Midgard once he discovered that's where you two were, which is why we have not been here to visit. I hope you two will be allowed to go back with me. If not, I'll stay here with you."
"And Saphira?" Enid asked, looking at him. "She's so set on going to Asgard."
"That she is," Thor said. "If we stay here, we can get her to Asgard somehow, talk to father, she never did anything wrong; hopefully, he will allow her to stay, and Loki would be happy to have her back; he will take care of her."
"I hope so. Saphira misses Loki so much; she'd be so happy to see him." Enid said.
"It's amazing that after all this time, Saphira is still in love with my brother?" Thor said as they went back to looking out the window. "I love my brother, but he usually drives people away; it's hard to get close to him."
"Saphira has her faults, lots of them, but if she cares for you, she stays pretty loyal, as long as you remain faithful to her," Enid answered. "What about Loki? Has he ever moved on?"
"No, Loki has not even looked at another," Thor answered.
"That's good," Enid answered. She began to play with the tiny hammer that was around her neck.
"Do you not still feel the same for me?" Thor asked.
"I thought I didn't." Enid answered, "But then I see you...and realize."
"You still do." Thor grinned; he reached and lifted the tiny hammer on her chain. "Is this supposed to be..." Enid nodded before Thor could finish, blushing a little, as Thor grinned.
"Saphira bought it for me as a joke," Enid explained. "I wear it because it reminds me of you." Thor let go of the necklace and put his arm around Enid, and pulled her to him.
"I knew you still loved me," Thor said.
"You always were so arrogant, I swear." Enid laughed.
"But I am right," Thor answered
"Yes, " Enid agreed, as she put her arm around Thor's waist and laid her head on his shoulder.
"I don't expect everything to go back to how it was before or to go straight to Asgard and have the wedding we did not get to have, but since we both still feel the same for each other, we could start again" Thor said.
"I don't know." Enid sighed. "I do love you, but it's been so long, and I own a business here and everything."
"We can make it work so we can spend time in both realms or just this one if you want," Thor said. "Where we live does not matter to me."
"Okay," Enid replied. "But if I decide to go back to Asgard..."
"If?" Saphira suddenly demanded from behind them ." What do you mean, if?" Enid and Thor turned around to look at her.
"Saphira, I..."
"You want to stay here just because of that stupid casino, "Saphira said. "Who cares about it? We might have a chance to go back to where we belong. Why would you even have to think about it?"
"Sister, it's not that simple," Enid said, her and Thor pulling apart.
"Why isn't it?" Saphira demanded
Before Enid could answer, there was a loud knock on Jane's door; everyone looked at each other confused, but then whoever was on the other side knocked again, harder this time, Saphira rolled her eyes and headed for the door, she threw the door open, and standing there was a balding guy, wearing a suit.
"What the hell do you want?" Saphira demanded, making the guy frown at her.
"Sister," Enid said.
"Are you Jane Foster?" The guy asked.
"Do I look like Jane Foster to you?" Saphira demanded before the guy could answer; she turned and walked away from him.
"I'm Jane Foster," Jane said, coming to the door; the guy at the entrance showed Jane a badge.
"Agent Phil Coulson." The guy said, "We have orders to confiscate your equipment and anything else we feel the need to take."
"What for?" Jane demanded as six guys came pushing their way in and started unplugging Jane's computers."I don't understand. What right do you have to take our stuff?" She went over and was trying to stop them along with Darcy and Erik.
"Hold on a moment." Enid walked up to Coulson. "Don't you have to have a warrant for this?"
"No, ma'am." Coulson denied, showing Enid his badge, "we don't work for the police department or any law enforcement agencies."
"Then, this is theft," Enid said, reaching in her back pocket and pulling out her phone. "And I am calling the police." Coulson nodded to Enid's cell phone, and an agent walked up and snatched it out of her hand.
"Hey." Both Saphira and Thor said the latter grabbed the guy's arm, gripping it tightly. "That does not belong to you."
"Thor, it's okay," Enid said; Thor looked at her in question. "It's okay, not like they'll have it for long. I'll get it back."
"I wouldn't be so sure about that." Coulson grinned at her; Enid narrowed her eyes at him.
"Who are you people anyway?" Enid demanded. "I have never once in my life heard of SHIELD and Saphira, and I have lived everywhere."
"Probably some secret government thing," Saphira said, walking up next to her. "I told you those seven years of law school would be useless, sister, not when those in charge get involved; it's the same in every realm, you can't trust authority, the laws don't apply to them, as they're the ones who make them." She gave Coulson a dirty look, then turned and walked off again.
"She's a very suspicious person, isn't she?" Coulson demanded.
"She has good reason to be," Enid told him.
"I bet you guys are the ones who stole my wreck car," Saphira said, turning back around and glaring at him; Coulson just stood there, not deny or conforming to it; Saphira narrowed her eyes at him. "I want our bags back, and nothing better be missing."
"You can't just take my stuff." Jane walked up to them. "It's my life's work."
"You can start over," Coulson said, taking a check out of the inside of his coat pocket. "Here, this should more than makeup for your troubles."
"I built most of this stuff," Jane said. "I can't just walk in a store and repurchase it."
"Then you can build more," Coulson said, before turning and walking out the door, Jane followed him arguing.
Enid stood there watching as Thor walked up next to her and put his arm around her shoulder. After Coulson and everyone else was getting in their cars, the guy who took Enid's phone from her walked up to the back of the van and tossed it in, then went to shut the door when Enid held her hand out. Her cell went zooming out of the truck and into her hand; the guy turned around surprised, then frown as Enid raised her eyebrow at him in a challenge. The guy looked as if he was thinking of taking her up on it, but Thor stepped in front of Enid and gave him a warning look. The guy just turned back to the van and slammed the doors before getting in the driver's seat and pulling out.
"I can't believe that just happened," Jane said. "They took all my work."
"They took my iPod," Darcy complained. She turned to Enid, "They took your bags and purse too."
"What?" Enid demanded, looking to wear her, and Saphira had their bags hanging, and Darcy was right; their bags were gone.
Saphira groaned and sat down and, in her anger, begun eaten the fires Thor had left in a bag sitting on the table, and she didn't give a damn that SHIELD took Jane's stuff; she found it amusing, as she watched them all complain. She was getting their things back though, her clothes and makeup were expensive, and her jewelry was all real, so it wasn't cheap either.
"I know a guy; maybe he can help get it back," Erik said.
"I had thirty songs downloaded on it." Darcy went on.
"Forget the iPod," Jane said. "That was all my life's work."
"Jane, let me email the guy I know," Erik said. "See what he can do."
"You can't," Darcy said. "They took your laptop too." Erik groaned and walked a little ways away from them.
"If you guys care so much, hop in your cars and go after them," Saphira said; they all turned to her.
"Are those my fries?" Thor demanded, frowning at her.
"Not anymore," Saphira said, popping one in her mouth. "If those SHIELD guys can take our stuff, I can take your fries."
"I'll buy you some more," Enid told him, laying her hand on his arm to stop any fight that might happen between him and her sister over his food. Thor let it drop, thankfully.
"Think those are the same people who were at the crash site earlier?" Jane asked.
"Most likely," Enid said as she sat at the table across from Saphira. Her purse had all her identification and bank cards and a little bit of money in it. If she didn't get that back, then they were stuck here with no way home unless they hitched, hiked, or walked to Las Vegas.
"Good, then tonight, when we go back, I should be able to go get my stuff," Jane said, walking over and sitting at the table Saphira was sitting at.
"We should come up with a plan," Enid said.
"We don't need a plan," Saphira said. Thor sat next to her, and she handed him the rest of his fries. "We go in and get our bags, and Mjolnir, kick their ass and leave this damn town."
"I at least need to find a way to sneak in from the back end," Enid said, opening up the map.
"No matter what we do, it's not going to be easy," Saphira said; she turned sideways in her seat and propped her feet up on Thor's leg; he looked down at them but said nothing as Saphira pulled out her phone and began playing on it.
Enid signed as she rubbed the side of her head as she looked over the map; it was a habit of Enid's when she was thinking hard.
"Nothing ever is easy," Enid mumbled. "Though for once, I wish it was."
AN: as you found out, Saphira was 945 when they came to Midgard; being there for 100 years would make her 1045 in 2011, which is when this is taking place, like when the movie came out, it's somewhere in the summer of 2011, (though I have no idea what season it's supposed to Be in Thor.
I wanted to explain the ages as I have made Thor a bit younger than the movie Thor, to fit into my story better and to make it more believable that he didn't know Loki was adopted; I have also changed time going by slower on Asgard, time Goes by the same pace, They age slow. (sorry, the time thing and aging confuses me)
I decided to base their ages around Loki's age; online says Loki was supposed to be born on December 17, 965 AD, making him almost 1046, when he finally appears in this Story.
Saphira was born somewhere in July 966, eight months younger than Loki,
Enid is four years older, born 962; she was 949 when arriving on Midgard, making her 1049.
Thor is six years older than Loki, so 1051 at the start Of my story.
I hope none of this gets confusing; I'll do my best to keep ages and stuff straight; the other reason I did their ages like that is that I have chosen a character from Marvel to make Loki's birth mother, to do so, I had to age her up a bit, her character is already old, no one knows her actual age, but I doubt it's that old. I didn't want Thor being older than her; that would be weird.
I know the MCU has never touched on who Loki's birth mother is; the comic did, though, but ill ignore that fact, and I am going by Loki's age in MCU; I think in comics, they are supposed to be a lot older than that, though I haven't read one yet given their exact age.
So their ages compared to humans, well, Loki and Saphira are the same as a Midgardain in their mid-twenties (Late teens when Saphira left Asgard) Thor and Enid are the same as someone in the late twenties -early thirties (mid-twenties when Enid left Asgard)
