Rayne was waiting for Mac while Flack was finishing up and she looked around. She didn't feel like she belonged there but before much else could be said she saw Flack and Hawkes walking over. "Sorry I took a little longer than what I thought. I just ran into Sheldon while we were putting the paperwork away about your composition of who attacked the girls." Flack grabbed her wheelchair and watched as he held it steady how Hawkes was able to get her to barely move her leg but get back into the chair.

"She's going to the crime lab. Aubrey thinks they found another weapon that was used based on pictures taken during Rayne's initial beat down and we need a wound impression," Hawkes informed and they nodded before Hawkes helped her into the car and he looked at her to see she wouldn't put her feet fully down. That was certainly something that they needed to work on with her as she'd be going back to school soon enough so they needed to get her walking. When he got into the car and began driving, he looked at her. "You have to try harder." She glanced at him and he pulled into the parking lot and parked. "Rayne, I've had patients that had much worse. They got back up. One of the best examples I can think of. Working in emergency one night. Firefighter comes in and then says he'll walk it off. Goes and plays a game with the others. Runs across home plate and all his teammates hop on him. Broke his back. Now it took time, sweat and pain. But he walked again. He said that the pain was a price for every precious thing in this life. So you need to try harder. You have something to live for. I don't want to get forceful on you but I will if I have to," he warned.

"Why?" Hawkes looked at her and waited. She glanced at him confused and he made a face to make her repeat it. "Why bother with me?" He gripped the bridge of his nose and reminded himself he didn't first off harm anyone least of all children.

"If Mac ever found out that someone gave up on you that he knew, we'd be dead. On top of that I have a policy. I'm upfront with friends and family. You're Mac's kid now and that makes you a nice mix of friend and family. You understand me?" She nodded and he sighed in relief. "Now let's go get that wound impression." As they climbed out, Hawkes went to grab her wheelchair but she shook her head. "You need it." She looked at him confused and he chuckled. "I didn't mean you had to shove yourself off the deep end. I just mean when you go to the physiotherapist I don't want to hear you're only trying 50%. You understand?" She nodded and as he helped her sit down in the chair and pushed her inside and upstairs, he saw Peyton was waiting. "Do we have a lookalike of the window?"

"Yeah and here's why we need it," she answered playing the virtual replay of what happened to Rayne based on what they gathered. They watched as the dummy was stumbling through the back streets of the lab and how it stopped to breathe before Hawkes saw it. "Rayne wasn't close enough to the car to get her head bashed in," Peyton answered as she and Hawkes carefully removed the bandage from her head. "She was forced near it with something. But we have no wounds on the front of her head. Which means," Peyton began as they tilted her head forwards and they saw it. A bruise had formed on her neck. "She was struck from behind," Peyton realized. Hawkes looked at the wound and they quickly grabbed their camera while it still had a clear purple bruise. "It's long but it's blunt too."

"Wouldn't be something just found in an alley," Hawkes responded as he looked at the wound. "Lean your head a bit farther forward," he advised and as she did he saw the wound clearer. "I'd say it was a pipe. Look at some of the bruises locations." Peyton grabbed a light as Mac arrived and saw it. "There are darker patches. Almost as if where a pipe would connect elsewhere," she responded before gently lifting the back of Rayne's shirt and covering her mouth. There was another one and it was darker. "I think we now have an idea of what hits came first. This one," Hawkes began pointing to the lower back one and arranging the model to try and demonstrate what happened. "Then he struck higher meaning she didn't fall as much as he wanted but not as hard, meaning she stumbled." As he kept entering data, he entered the final one and then looked to see the picture. "Here's what really happened. This should clear up what Rayne can't remember," he responded.

The 4 of them watched as the model of the already gunshot Rayne ran into the area near the van and she seemed to glance around. "So Rayne thinks she's escaped and she's checking to make certain. When she looks away from where she just ran for two seconds, her attacker comes from behind her," Mac began and they watched it hit her lower back hard and she almost fell but pulled herself up. "She feels it but she manages to hold herself up." Hawkes nodded and then they watched as Rayne's model tried to run towards the building as people would be there. "Before she can even get to our medical examiner's loading bay," he continues and they all wince as she got struck virtually again.

"But once again, he thinks she's down and she pulls herself back up," Peyton answered watching the video. "Hawkes for this part did we determine what angle she hit it at?"

"Yeah. She was hit directly with the side," he answered revealing the photos of the van. "She was bashed right into it and hard," he answered as he played the final motion and they all groaned in pain just seeing the virtual one go through it. "He would have had to held her head and smashed it downwards," he added.

"It was a miracle she didn't suffer brain damage. Looking at these images," Sid Hammerback greeted walking in and Rayne looked confused. "I got her MRI from Dr Hunter and she doesn't have any signs of cerebral hemorrhage, but she does have a sign of cerebral contusion."

"So doing anything that involves gravity pulling her down besides normal gravity is off limits for a while," Mac noted and Sid nodded at him. "Before we get any farther, Rayne this is Sid. He's one of the Medical Examiner's I work with often," Mac introduced and the two of them shook hands. "Sid this is Rayne. At the moment she's slightly stuck to a wheelchair but hopefully not for long. Here's what we did get," he informed letting Hawkes replay the head bashing scene. "We have the head bash down perfectly. She was knocked off her feet."

"Well let's just adjust one thing," Sid answered as he saw the images Hawkes had of Rayne's back wounds. "She has 3 purple bruises and one black. He struck her middle as hard as he could," he answered pointing to the one that was exposed with Mac's help and she winced. He then looked at the others. "I'd assume he went with her back as the hardest thinking if he hit hard enough she wouldn't get up." Hawkes changed it and then frowned.

"That changes the scene. Rayne would have been too far down to hit her head," Hawkes began before he realized. "But she got up. Shoved herself through the pain to fight for her life. As she stood back up though," he answered looking at the neck bruise and they watched as she was her neck was struck with the pipe and she was grabbed. "That signalled the end," he answered as they all looked away as the model once again bashed it's head against the van mirror.

Sid nodded and then looked at the pictures Hawkes had taken of the cleaned bullet wounds while Rayne was in hospital and pursed his lips. "Do we have any ideas about the bullets?" He wanted to get some ideas about where they were shot from.

"We have options," Hawkes answered revealing another model. "I took what Dr Hunter said about them. She said the bullet that entered and exited Rayne's abdomen from in front was shot at a distance. Our scene was this alley here," he began. "There's not many options for that," he answered pointing to two buildings. "Rayne was hit dead center of the abdomen just below the diaphragm, and that means they knew the wind direction and everything."

"That building there," Mac answered pointing to the second tallest building. "The shooter could have been on the fire escape and shot before chasing after Rayne as he saw her go backwards from the hit. As he caught up she had recovered from the shock and went at him as he tried again. That's when," Mac began before they all watched the shooter model place the gun to the side of Rayne and shoot again and she fell down. "Thinking that finally the last one was gone, he walked away. But Rayne recovered again and got back up. She stumbled out of the alley and checked for her attacker before running and we start the demonstration we just showed," Mac finished.

"I'd say Rayne's quite lucky she survived," Sid answered as he watched the two virtual interactions one right after the other. Mac nodded and noticed Peyton was holding Rayne's shoulder a smidge tighter. He smiled sadly and also had a hand on Rayne's shoulder. "Does she remember much about her own attacker?"

"No," Mac and Rayne answered at the same time.

"We all have predicted it's traumatic memory loss. She's suffering amnesia. We're hoping something she sees will cause a snag and bring it back," Hawkes explained to Sid. "But for now, we work with the evidence." He nodded and as Rayne was wheeled back to Mac's car, and she was helped into the back seat. Mac noticed she looked to be exhausted and having her brain picked as well as watching a virtual repeat of what happened to her would have taken it's toll.

"Maybe I pushed her too hard," he whispered as he closed her door and he rested his head on the top of the car before he saw Peyton come around and smile at him. "What if I was wrong? What if we just threw her through the ringer?"

"She'll recover. She apparently did well with Flack. But she does need to talk about this to someone. So you need to take her to the appointment next week. I was asked to head back to London for a little work," she answered and Mac nodded knowing that some days Peyton took international calls.

"Alright but come back soon," he answered.

"Don't I always?" As she got in the car, Mac glanced at the sky and glared. He knew Peyton most times did, but it didn't change that for once he wasn't asking for himself alone. He didn't want Rayne to feel like she was being tossed around. When he sat in the car and they drove back, he watched Rayne as she slept so he knew he'd be carrying her inside. Arriving at his apartment he slipped around to Rayne and picked her up, while Peyton grabbed her wheelchair. "Are you going to be okay?"

"Yes. I'll make the rules and everything. When do you leave?" Peyton pointed to the weekend and he nodded at her knowing she would get some time to spend with Rayne before she left. "We need to do something as a family together."

"We'll head down to the park tomorrow. I just want Rayne not to feel rushed," Peyton answered looking at Mac. "You and I both know that she's going to take a little time to adjust to the unequal hours of two people working in the Crime Lab," she warned.

"Well remember, I work with Stella to arrange schedules. We can easily make it so she has time with the both of us like a normal child," Mac answered looking at the woman.

Over the evening, Mac was working out a rule sheet and a warning of what each rule being broken would earn her. He did believe in some older school punishments thanks to his Marine background but he wasn't cruel. He had went to bed late, but woke up to hear a thud and he ran up to the rooms and started by checking on Peyton and saw she was still asleep, so he knew it was Rayne. He slipped into her room to see her on the ground and she chuckled a little bit as she saw him. "Oops?"

"You're lucky Peyton didn't wake up." He helped her stand back up and she winced before pulling her body into the bed. "What were you doing trying to slip out of bed at this hour? It's only 2 AM."

"Says the one who was downstairs working on whatever until this hour," she responded and Mac looked at her. "Very light sleeper. I always listened for movement," she reminded and he nodded knowing that was probably the most accurate thing that could be said.

"Well you can actually get some sleep at night sometimes now," he assured as he made sure she was covered up and then slipped into his shared room with Peyton and laid down only to notice his alarm was set for 5 making him groan. "I have got to start sleeping sometimes."

"Where were you?"

"Sleeping on the couch and then helping Rayne back into her bed. She fell out," he answered and Peyton sat up. "She's fine. I checked her wounds over for signs of rebleeding and she was able to stand, albeit painfully," he answered.

After a few more hours of rest, Mac woke up and he went out for his run knowing he had some time. Peyton was going to be getting ready for her trip and Rayne would hopefully be in bed. When he returned he heard a squeal and he ran up the stairs and had his gun in hand before he noticed that it was Peyton and Rayne. They had somehow managed to get on the floor and Rayne was trying to crawl away. "She's ticklish," Peyton noted.

"Help," Rayne begged while laughing. Mac took pity on Rayne and pulled her up and Peyton chuckled looking at the two of them as Mac placed Rayne on his back.

"Have you two eaten or were you distracted by that?" Mac thought of something to do before letting Rayne see some of the area.

Peyton nodded and he chuckled as he adjusted Rayne. "I'll go get her chair. She had managed to crawl her way out here."

"Fall out again?"

"Forgot my legs were badly damaged," she answered and he chuckled at her as Peyton brought the chair out. Mac carefully lowered her and then gripped her hands as he made her let go and helped her into her chair. He noted she had changed at least and was ready to go.

"I'll go get the car from the garage," Peyton answered taking the keys and walking out of the apartment leaving Mac surprised and he glanced to Rayne to see her blinking owlishly at the woman. He chuckled and started rolling her to the main elevator.

"She said she's heading to London in a few days."

"She doesn't just work with the Crime Lab. Sometimes her friends contact her to come back to London to help out and apparently this is what has happened again," he responded and he didn't want to make her feel insecure about what was happening. "She'll come back."

"Will she?" Mac looked at her and Rayne chuckled humorlessly. "Some women make excuses." Mac noted she wouldn't identify him or Peyton by name and he knew why. She didn't know what she was to call them. He didn't want to force parental address but he also didn't want to make her feel like she wasn't allowed.

"I'm sure she will. Also noticed you aren't using names or anything."

"Not sure what to use."

"I won't force you to call me dad, but you're welcome to if you wish. I promised you I won't give you back," Mac assured as he saw Peyton driving around. "Same with Peyton."

"I'll decide later," she responded as he helped her back into the car. When he put her wheelchair in the trunk, he saw Peyton on the phone with someone and he decided not to listen in, but he also knew that Rayne had a point. Not all people told the truth.

"Alright so let's head to Central Park," Peyton answered as she got into the car. When they were driving through town, Mac noted that Peyton had already texted some of his team. "She needs to meet them officially. She deserves it."

"She does," Mac answered glancing back and seeing Rayne glancing out the city. "She fought a long and hard battle. It's time she got her chance to relax." As they arrived, Mac could make out Sheldon and the others setting up a little thing and Lindsay had brought her kids too. "This will be a good little day out."
