Chapter 4
Midnight
Sailor-ville, Sahara Square Zootopia
The "Wicked Tortoise Tavern"
See the people walking down the street
Fall in line just watching all their feet
They don't know where they want to go
But they're walking in time
They got the beat
They got the beat
They got the beat
Yeah, they got the beat
All the kids just getting out of school
They can't wait to hang out and be cool
Hang around 'til quarter after twelve
That's when they fall in line
They got the beat
They got the beat
Kids got the beat
Yeah, kids got the beat
Jackson looked down from the chair to see Gilly hopping around the floor wooping it up around the snarling and defeated reindeer..."HAH! GET EM ON THERE GORGEOUS! NEVER BET AGAINST A BUNNY!"
"WAY TO SNAG IT GILL!" Jackson yelped as he hopped off the chair, bounced off a Rhino's shoulder and slid over the floor to catch Gill by an arm!
"Told you I'm still sharp..."hic"...Even if I'm a wittle bit hammered..." Gilly said as he fell against Jackson and slip him a quick kiss?..."That's for being right on the money there Jacko!"
Ayden, Babbs and Bailey came through the crowd and scooped Jackson and Gilly off the floor..."I...I wov this funny...wov this awesome foxticullar...rabbit..." Gilly said as he waved and pointed his paw at Jackson. "I...wov him..."hic"...HEY?! HEY YOU?! BIG MOUTH REINDEER?! START GETTING READY FOR YOUR FLOOR SHOW DARLING!"
The reindeer snorted back..."Who says I have to give you anything you little pip squeak rodent?"
The whole tavern went "Ooooooo..." as Gilly stood unsteady on Bailey's shoulder...
"Ex...ek...excuse me?" Gilly asked. "What did you say? I didn't hear you."
The reindeer leaned in and gave Gilly a snort of snot spray..."What makes you think...rodent...that I'll give you anything?"
"If you don't do it?" Gilly replied. "I'll kick your stupid tail so far up your hole, they'll need a rescue team and a claw hammer to get you out."
Ayden got between Gilly and the angry reindeer..." You made a bet there sport, now honor it."
"Oh? And just how are you going to make me honor anything you stupid feather duster? Hmph...muscles on a bird? Like tits on a fricken bull."
"Yes...I guess so huh there coat rack?" Ayden replied...then with one good swing...his feather fist connected with the reindeer's snoot and sent the equine flying back into a table where it and it's contents exploded all over the floor!"
"OH SNIT!" Bailey yelped!
"Yup!" Ayden snorted. "Snits about to get a little spicy in here."
Other reindeer in the bar, seeing one of their own get clobbered into a table, surged towards the offending seagull Sailor to avenge the honor of their fallen brother buck!
"Bailey! Get back!" Ayden snarled as he wound up.
"Like hell I'll back up!" Bailey snapped as he quickly grabbed Gilly and Jackson and threw them onto the floor next to Babs! "Get under a table!" The thin college sea gull yelped before he grabbed a metal drink serving tray and swung for the fence against a charging reindeer!
"CLANG!" Off the side of his head and down went the tarandus to the floor!
"HOLY SNIT! WAY TO SWING NERD!" Ayden snapped as he kicked a reindeer charging at him with his antlers down right between the legs! "THANK NEPTUNE THESE DEER ARE HEAD STRONG JACK ASSES!"
Under a table...Gilly laid against Jackson and Babs drunk as a skunk and then some..."Boy..."hic"...we started some silly snit didn't we huh?"
"It's his specialty." Jackson said to Babs. "Interesting night out, isn't it?"
"I'm having more fun than usual!" Babs replied. "OH SNIT!" She screched as she snatched Gilly and pulled him away just as a reindeer crashed into and destroyed their protective table!
Jackson hopped off the floor, bounced off the fallen deer, caught a beer bottle as it was falling and smashed it against the reindeer's head!
"Ouch! Take two aspirin to go you stupid sled puller!" Gilly yelped as Jackson slid to a stop near him. "The mafia teaches good stuff huh?" Gilly said smiling.
"For the last time Gill?! I'm not in the damn Mafia!" Jackson yelped as he quickly ran and dove to escape being picked up by another angry deer!
"Sheesh! Now we have white tails pissed at us?!' Jackson yelped as he jumped onto Bailey's back!
"When my brother starts swinging?" Bailey said. "Anyone's a target!"
"We gotta get out of here!" Jackson snapped. Suddenly whistles were blowing outside the tavern..."Oh snit! Shore patrol! We gotta go like yesterday!"
Jackson scrambled to Bailey's shoulder and screamed at Ayden. "SOUPS! SOUPS! SHORE PATROL'S COMING! LET'S HAUL ASS AND TAILS OUT OF HERE!"
Ayden nailed one more deer with a beer bottle and followed Bailey out of the club as he pulled Babs and Gilly under his arms from the floor of the Tavern!
"Bailey!" Ayden screamed! "Take flight when we clear the door!"
As the Gull brother cleared the throng of patrons from the tavern, they both took flight with Gilly, Babs and Jackson clinging to their legs!
"Urk! I'm gonna be sick!" Gilly yelped!
"Don't chum on me bro!" Bailey screamed!
30 Minutes Later
The whole group lay crashed together on the beach front of Sahara Square...
"Way to go Bails..." Ayden said waving his wing around. "Who'd ever thought my nerdy kid brother would kick tail?"
"See? Told you college isn't dumb." Bailey replied. "You three all right?"
Gilly huffed back still drunk..."No! I didn't get my panty floor show and I'm...I'm...excuse me..."
Gilly quickly dug a whole "rabbit style" and puked in it! "Ugh...at least I didn't soil the beach."
"You ok Gill?" Babs asked as she held Gilly by his shoulders.
"Besides that I'm drunk and urking? Yeah Babs...just don't kiss me right now."
Jackson sat up. "Frith of Inlay...I hope we didn't get "made" in there. My parents will flip out."
"Oh what are they gonna do to you Jackie? Spank you?" Gilly replied then he chuckled..."That would be funny to watch since you're bigger than your mom."
"She'll probably throw me over the old couch and pull out her really big police belt." Jackson replied. He then turned to Ayden..."Soups? Shouldn't we just self report to the Master Chief?"
"Are you crazy?" Ayden snorted. "Old Isen? That snarly old brown bear will really kick our asses. But? Not to say he won't be impressed that we stomped their jingle balls good!"
"It's one thirty." Jackson said as he looked at his smart phone. "We don't have to go in tomorrow but we should be smart enough to know when to quit."
"Here, here!" Gilly replied as he lay with his head in Bab's lap. "Mmmm...I'll "sack" here where the fur is toasty warm."
"Not on your life cutie." Babs said as she played with Gilly's head tuft. "I have to go home and get rested for tomorrow night's work."
Jackson slapped Gilly on his shoulder. "We're going to get a flop room to crash in. Trying to get back to the ship now as we are?"
"I'm paying!" Gilly yelped. "I'm paying for the room! Leave your wallet in your pocket you...you wonderful fub...fub-bunny you."
"Insistent, aren't we?" Jackson replied giggling.
"Nah!" Gilly said waving his paw around..."We're drunk...we're drunk...and...and...and I'm gay and I love you Jackson! There! There I said it! As stupid as I am...I...love you Jackie..."
Gilly flopped back and passed out...leaving everyone else looking shell shocked...
Ayden and Bailey looked at each other..."Oh kay?...kinda confirmed our suspicions?"
Babs smiled at Jackson..."Awwww..."
"No!" Jackson yelped. "Guys no! I'm not...grrr...Gill? Well? Well he's plastered, what can I say?"
"Oh whatever." Ayden said. "You're so strait, you beat perfect level, don't go nuts over the revelation."
Babs felt Gilly hug her thighs..."Um? We should get him to a room, I know a good low cost bunny flop house near here."
Jackson pulled Gilly to his feet. "Come on Ship mate..."
"I luv...I love you." Gilly said as he hugged Jackson's shoulders and smootched his cheek. "Frith...I love you Jackie so much."
"When's the wedding?" Bailey asked with a smirk.
"Oh...go eat garbage you silly nerd." Jackson huffed back. "Yes...I love you too Gilly. Let's go before he does something he'll really regret."
"Like ask you to marry him?" Babs chuckled.
"Grrrrrr..." Jackson replied.
Ayden waved his wing..."Jackson?"
"Soups?" Jackson replied.
"About Gill? Nothing goes back on board. We're square right?" Ayden asked.
"Yeah Soups...square." Jackson replied.
"Enjoy your honeymoon?" Ayden said with a grinning beak.
"Oh frick you! You salt stinking excuse for an avian Sasquatch."
Bailey chuckled. "You just insulted Sasquatch! It's great meeting you all. I need to get out and party more often!"
"Sure we'll have more time Bailey." Jackson said as he stumbled away with Gilly. "See you on the ship day after tomorrow Soups!"
The three bunnies walked along the main drag of Sahara Square with Gilly still drunk affectioned to Jackson's shoulder..."Wow...I'm this plastered? I wasn't supposed to get this plastered. But at least I'm plastered with the nicest most kindest rabbit...mmm...sow-ee...nicest most cutest foxy bunny around."
Babs took an arm..."You sure he's all right?"
"I'll take care of him." Jackson replied. "If I need to call an ambulance, the hospitals not far off. If he can still walk then he's not that bad...just can't hold his carrot juice huh Gilly?"
"I can hold my stuff just great!" Gilly yelped back! "I just can't...walk zooooooo good right now."
Babs pointed to the "bunny-dive" motel. "Here's a place with cheep rooms. I'll pay for it."
"No?" Jackson replied.
"Yes." Babs replied obstinant. "Don't give me that "females never pay" stuff...you two gave me a wonder time and I'm paying..."
Babs gave gilly a lip and tongue service..."You're such a cutie no matter what anyone says."
Gilly smiled back. "I think you just kissed me strait?"
"Come on goof ball, let's get you inside and in a bed." Jackson said as he followed Babs to the pay booth and then to the room...
"Well? This is good bye at least for now you two." Babs said as she gave each a cheek kiss. "Stay out of trouble and we'll do this again... only a little more crazier."
Gilly looked at Jackson. "I like her. Let's keep her."
"Night Babs." Jackson said with a nod. "And thanks for the company tonight." Jackson reached into his pocket and Babs stopped him...
"No extras." Babs said. "The service was on the house. Good night you two..."
As Babs left...Jackson guided Gilly to the single bed and helped him to sit. The room was a plain and simple "dive" with a metal frame bed, a dresser, a television, a night stand with a lamp and a bathroom with a tub/shower. At least it didn't "offend" the nose...too badly.
"Our luck there's fleas all over the place." Jackson huffed. He looked at Gilly's face as he cupped his cheeks in his paws..."You ok Gill?"
A sudden burst of clarity went through Gilly's head and his face turned to shock..."Jackson?" Gilly asked..."What have I said to you?"
"Huh?" Jackson replied. "What?"
"What have I said to you?!" Gilly started to panic. "Oh Frith! Oh... Jackie? Jackie I'm so sorry...I'm sorry I said things like that to you?!"
"What the hell?" Jackson replied. "What do you mean Gill? You didn't say anything bad..."
"Yes I did!" Gilly snapped drunk. "I came on to you! I sounded like a sick pervert! Jackson I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Gilly began to sob. "I'm so sorry Jackie, I didn't mean to sound like that..."
"Gill? You're sloshed...I didn't take any of it as an offense, calm down..." Jackson said yet Gilly grabbed him by the shoulders...
"Don't leave me Jackie! You're the only friend I have! I came on to you...I said perverted things to you! I'm sorry!" Gilly said with fear in his eyes...
"Gilly?! Stop it!" Jackson yelped. "Calm down ok?! It's fine...I'm not upset with you..."
"Oh Frith...If I lose you as a friend? I'll die...I'll just die...I have no one else Jackson..." Gilly sobbed.
"Will you cut it out Gill?!" Jackson snapped as he gave Gilly a shake. "Stop it!"
Gilly froze for a moment as Jackson held his wrists..."What's Will? You have no one? So what's Will? An ornamental piece in the apartment?" Jackson asked. Gilly shy'd his face away...
"Gill? Look at me?" Jackson asked.
"I can't." Gilly replied. "Oh Frith Jackie...I've thought of having sex with you. I'm so sorry..."
"Sigh"...Jackson shook his head..."Gilly? Look at me before I get upset and call Will to come get you?"
Gilly turned his head..."Don't leave me Jackie?"
"Will you Please? Stop it?!" Jackson replied. "Stop it! Cut the carrots, stop."
"Oh...I'm gonna be sick..." Gilly panic'd! Jackson snatched a waste basket by the bed and pushed Gilly's head into it where the poor rabbit hurled his stomach...
"Ugh...I feel...like snit." Gilly said as Jackson started to fiddle with his friend's shirt...
"Jackie? What?" Gilly worried.
"I'm putting you in bed." Jackson replied.
"I've disgraced you." The shivering rabbit said. "I've perverted...I've ruined our friendship..."
"No you haven't and I don't care if you're gay." Jackson replied. "You did nothing wrong, I'm not offended and you're drunk so water under the bridge Gilly..."
"I wouldn't be surprised if you wanted to dump me here and go." Gilly yelped back.
"You're talking drunk, stupid nonsense Gilford. I'm not like other rabbits so I'm not leaving you alone, ok? I'm not leaving. So you think I'm cute? Fine. You love me? Fine. I'm not gay but I don't give a hoot right now. All I care about is my friend and ship mate who's drunk and upset and I'm not leaving his side for anything." Jackson squeezed a paw..."I'm not leaving."
Gilly cried as Jackson tucked him into the bed..."I don't deserve you...I don't deserve you at all...my whole life's been a mess..."
"Yeah...yeah...and I'm stuck with you Gilly. Frith! You are worse than tree moss. Hard to get rid of and persistent as fluck." Jackson petted a paw over Gilly's head tuft. "But I wouldn't have you any other way. You're the best friend I've had. Sticking with you from boot camp to now has been the best thing I've ever done. You mean a lot to me Gilly Monford...a lot."
"I've been a pain in your ass." Gilly replied. "I've thought sick things about you."
"Well? Not..." Jackson snickered.
"Jackie?!" Gilly yelped.
Jackson smiled..."What am I going to do with you Gill? Sheesh...we are going to feel this in the morning."
"I feel like absolute crap." Gilly replied..."I'm really sorry Jackson..."
"You know I couldn't leave you if I tried Gill? My mother would tear me a new tail hole. Some one has to make sure you walk tomorrow."
Gilly reached out and petted Jackson's cheek..."You're the only one besides Will in my life..."
"You're forgetting a lot of mammals Gill. Being plastered off your ass usually causes amnesia." Jackson said. "Stop worrying. You actually have more friends than you tell yourself and none of them are going to give a rats ass if you're gay or if you love a wolf. As for any rabbit with a chip on their shoulder? They'll be risking a hell of an ass whooping if they dare touch you...stop worrying and sleep. I'll be right here."
Gilly grabbed a paw..."Promise me you won't leave?"
"I promise I won't leave." Jackson replied.
2:45am
Jackson flopped onto his butt from the toilet and held his head. "Ugh...when is this room going to stop spinning?! Oh I hope my parents don't call me right now because my Mom will throw a fit and come to arrest me! Ugh...fluuuuck me." Jackson groaned as he slowly laid himself out on the bathroom floor.
"Beep, beep, beep..." Jackson's smart phone ping'd out.
"Hell...ugh...Jackson here and I'm a mess..." Jackson said.
"You sound like it." Will Gray replied. "Sounds like you two emptied Sailor-ville of bunny booze."
"Close too it." Jackson said as he stumbled to the bed and flopped onto his back. "Ugh! I've been trying to stay up to watch Gilly."
"Is he ok?!" Will sounded worried. "Do you need me to come?!"
"He's sound asleep snoring it off and no you don't need to come down here...Woofie." Jackson giggled. "Woofie? Awwwwww...cute."
"He's really hammered good huh?" Will asked.
"He had fun." Jackson replied. "A lot of fun but he's in a bed, he's safe and he's asleep so score for our team."
"You're number one in my book Jackson." Will said. "Thanks for taking good care of him for me and helping him to be more confident in furblic."
"Of course...what's a good friend for?" Jackson replied. "I'll send him sober with a splitting headache to you tomorrow...Woofie."
"Don't get used to that nickname there..." Will warned.
Jackson heard a younger voice calling out..."We're almost done binge watching "Canids of Thrones" and you're flipping on the phone?"
Will sighed..."Younger brother calls. See you tomorrow Jackson."
"Night Will." Jackson replied. He felt a paw brush over his arm...
"Jackie? You ok?" Gilly asked as he shook his head..."I'm certainly not ok but I am better headed than I was a few hours ago. I really bore the soul to you huh? I'm sorry Jackie...I'm so...so..."
"What did I tell you?" Jackson asked. "Cut it with all the sorry stuff, I'm happy you had fun and you're not worse for wear and I didn't leave...see? Now go back to bed you?"
Gilly sighed as he laid back on his pillow..."Did Will call?"
"Yeah...he's not coming so your dream of a fuzzy three some is dead." Jackson giggled.
"I'm in pain, I feel bad I said so many lewd things to you and you mock me." Gilly huffed.
"You know I don't mean to mock you Gill?" Jackson said as he felt a paw..."Just a little friendly prick in your ass to prove there's more mammals caring about your life than perhaps you think?"
"We really tied it on tonight, didn't we?" Gilly said as he ran his paw through his blonde head tuft.
"You finally got all that shyness out of you, that's for sure." Jackson said as he started to get undressed.
"Uh? You're gonna sleep?" Gilly said concerned.
"Uh? Yeah! That's what you do when you're super tired, still a bit sloshed and about to fall on your face." Jackson said as he turned feral and "made biscuits" to get comfortable.
"Are you?" Gilly started to ask until Jackson got nose to nose with him...
"I think I can trust you...right?" Jackson asked.
"Yes." Gilly replied.
"If I can't trust you?" Jackson replied. "There's always ice-ing."
"I thought you said you weren't in the...you know? The thing?" Gilly said nervously.
Jackson gave Gilly a nose kiss..."I'm not but just so there's a thought brewing...I don't want you to meet an angry polar bear."
Gilly extended his paws, wrapped them around Jackson and snuggled his neck..."I'll behave. I love you Jackson...you're my family now."
"Glad to have you...my brother." Jackson replied lovingly. "Now get to bed."
15 years later...
The gray timber wolf was there, he was always punctual every year. slowly...he dropped a bouquet of flowers onto the white stone marker that sat by itself in the clearing by Sarabi falls in the rainforest district. It was their favorite secluded spot where they romped and played Predator and Pray together, loved together, where they talked of a future that war stole from them. The loss still hurt.
"Hello Will." The bunny-fox dressed in a black business suit and thick dress coat said in greeting as he walked up to embrace the pine'ing wolf...
"Glad you made it." Will replied. "Is it ok for me too?"
"He's not growling is he?" Jackson said as he gestured back to the huge polar bear dressed in a suit, a long coat and a fedora.
Jackson petted Will on his thick head tuft then placed his own flowers down next to the marker. The marker the bore the name of his late friend...scratch that...his late "brother" Gilly Montrose.
"Will?" Jackson asked. "When will you stop torturing yourself and find love? If Gill saw you these last 15 years? He'd be so heart broken that you've denied yourself happiness."
"He was my one and only love." Will replied. "He can't be replaced. No rabbit will ever replace him nor wolf. I still keep his last letter in this locket around my neck. I am besoted to my love till I die."
Jackson smiled..."At least tell me you're fairing well?"
"Oh...I'm not?" Will replied. "Being a legal mammal's kept me busy and gainfully occupied. I'm alright..." Will looks at the polar bear. "How do I address you properly?"
"Jackson's fine Will...or Jackie. We're friends ok so don't get all formal and squishy and ring kissy and all that movie stuff." Jackson said as he reached for Will's clothes. "But what I'm going to tell you might require you to be just a little decent."
"Oh?!" Will said as he looked at himself. "I forgot...I am so sorry."
"Sigh..." Jackson said..."I really miss that you know...about Gilly? He used "sorry" like a machine gun but he was so sincere and honest."
Will got his shirt and pants on as he changed back into "Anthro" form. "What's so important that you want me dressed?"
"I need a good "Consigliere"...there's going to be "a change" in the Lanzoni family and I need a high quality legal mammal as an advisor."
Will looked at the big polar bear..."Um?...Change?"
Jackson nodded. "It's become a difficult problem needing a tough resolution. Now that my mother is gone and my father has long since rompt in the happy after lands of my fox ancestors...I have to fill obligations. I need a Consigliere...I need you. Do you accept?"
Will took a moment to think..."I know what Gilly would say. If I said no...I'd be crazy. And not because of the polar bear."
Jackson reached out a paw..."I would be honored."
"I humbly accept...do I call you "Don" or "Father" or?" Will asked.
"In polite circles...yes. In times of custom it's required but between you and myself for Gilly's sake...it's Jackie. And I promise by the fur of my daughter...I will always take good care of the wolf my Brother so dear in my heart adored. Come now Will...there's unpleasant business that must be dealt with first."
The end
