TEEN IN LOVE

Harvey woke up at six, like usual, did his morning self care and while dressing he thought about his meeting with Donna and that they in three meetings had already done half of the work. He needs to slow her down because he wants it to last as long as possible. He didn't think he would like to spend time with her so much but it is just very easy to talk to her and laugh with her.

As he was exiting his apartment, he noticed in his rucksack a glitter purple notebook, definitely not his. He opened it and saw little sketches of flowers, stars and animal drawings and then he noticed Donna's beautiful handwriting.

He decided he had enough time to go to Donna's and then walk to school with her.

When he knocked on the door and it opened, he was met by an older version of Donna. With red hair, the same eyes and the same freckles on her face. But the woman in front of him also has a small plastic tube that comes out of her nose and leads to an oxygen cylinder that the woman carries behind her.

"Hey, mom, who was at-" Donna's voice comes from inside and he could hear her steps getting closer.

When she saw him, she froze. Her wide eyes locked with his and he could see anger growing in her hazel pools.

"What-Why are you here?" she asks, walking towards him, her mother stepping back to let her daughter pass.

"I-I… here, I took it by mistake" he says stammering, he was so confused by it all.

"Couldn't you give it to me at school, in class?" she fires back, taking the book out of his grip.

"I thought we could have-"

"Could have what?" she snaps, "listen, thank you for this but you can go now" she walks inside her building again and slams her door shut.

Harvey sighs and turns on his heels to go to school.

Donna, inside her house, angrily puts her purple notebook into her bag and then stops to take a big breath. She knows she treated him badly but she doesn't like when people find out about her mother's sickness.

"Donna-"

"No" she interrupted her mother right on the spot.

"You always react like this when someone sees this" Bethany points at her facilitator.

Donna shakes her head, "No, you don't get it. They look at me differently after, with pity and compassion. And then treat me like I'm some kind of fragile thing. And I'm not, and I don't like people to think I'm weak"

Donna storms out of her house and runs to the university campus.

Donna moved from classroom to classroom but couldn't concentrate in any way. She knows she misbehaved with Harvey and that was killing her. She took the decision to apologize to him as soon as her lessons end and everything will return to normal.

When her lessons ended she spotted him resting his back against the wall and around him there were Scottie and Trevor talking.

She takes a breath and walks over him.

"Harvey, wait, can I talk to you?" Donna asks, ignoring the other two persons. When his eyes locked with hers, she could tell he was hurt.

"Oh, look there is the nun" Scottie says and reveals her most diabolus smirk.

"Better than being a whore, Dana" Donna bravely fired back, watching Scottie backing a little.

"What did you just say to me?"

Donna rolls her eyes at her, ignoring her useless presence once again, "Hey, can we talk?"

"Sure" Harvey shrugs and follows Donna to a more private place.

"Listen I'm sorry for this morning…" Donna starts to apologize as Harvey's eyes are fixated on hers, "the truth is… my mother has cancer and I don't like people to know, especially my friends. It's just make me-"

"Uncomfortable" he completes her sentence.

"Exactly" Donna nods.

There is a silent, Donna watches how suddenly Harvey finds his shoes more interesting than anything around them. And then when she was about to open her mouth to say something and leave, his heads scooted up and he was smirking at her.

"Did you just say that we're friends?" he teases.

Donna bites her lower lip to prevent a huge smile from creeping on her face and releases a breath she didn't know she was holding, so grateful that they're still themself around each other.

"Now I didn't say that"

"Oh no, you did. Now there is no going back" they smile and their gazes fuse together, then he lets his face fall again into sadness, "I'm sorry for your mo-"

"Please don't say it. I don't want your pity" she shakes her head.

"It's not" he assured her.

"I'm sorry I treated you like that this morning"

"Hey, don't worry about it" he smiles and she feels a lot calmer. "Are we still on for this evening?"

"Of course. See you later" Donna smiles, kisses his cheek and walks away.

From far, Scottie is watching them and is shaking her head. She sees Harvey's smile widen when Donna kisses his cheek. This wasn't in the plan, definitely not.

That evening when Harvey arrived in the library spotted Donna seated at 'their table' as Donna calls it.

"Hey" he greeted her.

"Hey back" she looks up and smiles at him.

He sat down, opened his laptop and his book and started with his continuing his research on Congo's economy. It was half an hour later that he lost his focus because a ray of light entered through a hole in the blinds from the window and aimed directly at Donna, making her hair shine.

It caught his attention the day they met but they were into a dark house. When he first met her in class, her hair was the only thing he could focus on and when they were at the park some days ago her hair was so bright and shining. Like fire. She is like fire.

"How did it happen?" his voice coming out without his brain's permission breaking the silence around them.

"How did what happen?" Donna asked.

"Your mother, how di-"

"It's not something that has a reason to happen, Harvey. And if you don't mind I don't want to talk about it" she cut him off.

"I just-"

"Harvey, please stop" she was getting irritated again.

"What about your fath-"

"Harvey stop I told you I don't want to discuss it with you" she snapped and stood up from her chair and went out.

"Donna wait!" he followed her outside where she was standing, giving him her back. Her hands moving on her face, he guessed she was drying some tears. He guessed right.

He moved to stand in front of her and took her hands in his, "Please, I didn't mean to cross a line or hit a nerve. I guess the lawyer inside me came out, but don't worry he got back inside and I locked him in his little space"

She giggled, wiping her tears with her hands, "Don't worry, I just- my family is not my favourite topic. And I snap when someone tries to get informations about it from me"

"Yes, of course. I'm sorry. Come on, let's go back inside. There are that graphics you love to do and I can even help you if you want"

Donna smiled and followed his lead back inside.

An hour later they were out of the library building and ready to part to go home but Donna took his hand and squeezed it.

"Can we take a walk?" she shyly asks.

"Yeah sure" Harvey smiles.

They walk up to the park and sit on a small hill. The very soft green grass beneath them was very comfortable as Donna starts talking looking out to the horizon and gently stroking the back of Harvey's hand unconsciously

"My dad died 5 years ago. I was with him, we got into an accident and he didn't survive" Donna swallowed and closed her eyes to keep the tears as Harvey is looking at her in silence, not wanting to interrupt her.

"And it was difficult, my mother had to work for two to maintain me and we kind of got through that period but two years ago we discovered mom had cancer and after some time she couldn't even work" she is shaking her head and now facing Harvey with tears streaming down her cheeks.

"I'm so sorry, come here" Harvey's arm involves her shoulders and her head falls on his shoulder.

"Now she is doing better and we are here because her doctor told us there was this new therapy thing that a doctor at Boston's hospital is developing. So I had to change school and we moved here. The school is paid half by my grandparents who help me bring mom to therapy some days and the other half by the state. Medical contributes"

"I can't even imagine how hard it is"

"It really is but I always try to be positive, I keep telling myself it's going to be fine"

"It's going to be fine" Harvey repeats and holds her closer to his chest. Her head hidden in the crook of his neck as he kisses her hair.

It's intimate, more intimate than two friends should be but it feels like them.

"Donna?" he says after some minutes.

"Mmh?"

"What did you want to study?"

"What?" she asks confused, sitting right again but not leaving his arms just yet.

"You said you wanted to study something else, that you had to change school"

"I fell in love with theatre when I was six, my grandmother brought me to this show at Broadway and I was left fascinated by it all. The stage, the actors, the lights. It was incredible. When I'm in a theatre I feel a strange feeling like belonging" she gives him a watery smile.

He smiles too and squeezes her hand to encourage her to continue.

"I've always dreamt to become an actress and perform on a stage, going around the world… but I guess I'm not going anywhere any soon" she shrugs and then looks into his eyes, "Jeez I'm sorry I'm pathetic"

"You're not"

"You know sometimes I just want to take a day, just one. A day for me, to do everything I like. Go to see a play and just relax. Have you ever felt like this?"

Harvey nods and they both smile, understanding they were done talking for today and they stayed there, hugging, until Donna had to go home.

Here we go. All secrets are out in the open now (-maybe...).

I wanted this chapter to be more deep and intimate for both of them. Finally Harvey and Donna shared a moment and he knows her family situation.
