Chapter 4
Reunited
-Flashback: 8 months ago, Fenton house, moments after the accelerator explosion-
Jack Fenton was many things. He was a goof, and sometimes he acted without thinking; sometimes, he was very stubborn, but he is very protective of his family. He and his family watched the news about the Ghost Portal coming on when the home phone started to ring.
"Hello?" Damon said worriedly into the phone.
"Yes, this is Jack Fenton of Fenton Works speaking, where we help you with your ghost hunting needs," Jack responded.
"Yes, this is Damon Gray speaking to you in regards to your son, Danny," Damon replied, still anxious about telling the Fenton Family the news.
"Yes, Mr. Gray, is there an issue with Danny?" Jack asked.
Damon sighed. He knew the Fenton family would be troubled, but he had to say something. "Yes, Mr. Fenton," Mr. Gray said. "There was an accident at Axiom Labs. Meet me at Central City hospital-" At that moment, the line went dead, and the house started to shake. A loud KRACKAKABOOM from the storm outside struck the home, causing the power to go out. The room was silent from the power outage, and at that moment, Jack was stunned, unable to speak.
When he finally did speak, He said, "Maddie, Jazz, we need to go to Central City Hospital. There has been an accident at Axiom, and Danny was involved."
"What happened, Jack? There was an accident at Axiom, and Danny was involved? How? Why-" Maddie began until Jack interrupted her.
"Maddie," he began to say, "I don't know what or how or why. I know that Danny needs us and is at the Central City Hospital with Mr. Gray, his boss. So, we need to get into the Fenton Family Ghost Assault Vehicle and head there ASAP."
-Line Break-
The car drive to the hospital was a long one, or that's what felt like. Jazz was apprehensive about her brother and about how this all happened. After getting word from Mr. Gray about Danny's accident, her dad decided to turn on a radio station for any news about the storm while they drove to the hospital. The storm, as it were, seemed to get more intense out of nowhere and then settle down to a drizzle with no lightning and thunder to be seen or heard. As the radio station came on, it was static for a moment, and then someone could be heard, getting more apparent by the second.
The announcer said, "We have Breaking news: "World-renowned physicist Dr. Harrison Wells has just come out of the lab in what appears to be a wheelchair. The particle accelerator went on the fritz once the storm had gotten strong, causing an explosion that went up into the atmosphere causing city-wide outages. After Dr. Wells delivered his press conference statement, he said he would not be taking any questions at this time." At the end of the news report, Jack decided that was enough for now and continued driving to the hospital while music played in the background.
Upon arriving at Central City Hospital, the scene was complete chaos. Nurses were running everywhere, trying to determine the cause of the usual symptoms coming from Danny. There were intermittent power outages at the hospital that no one could explain. When they got to Danny's hospital room, it was unusually cold to the point where one would assume the A/C was on at full blast. In the middle, laid Danny on the bed, out like the room that surrounded him. To the left of Danny's bed were Danny's best friends, Sam Manson and Tucker Foley. Tucker was on his PDA in a seat a corner of the room while Sam, bless her heart, had her head lying at Danny's bedside, hoping that Danny's slumber was just her imagination or that the predicament they were in now was just a horrible nightmare. To Danny's right side was Valarie Gray, a classmate of Danny's who had a secret crush on him for a while. Her head was also lying on his bed opposite Sam. Damon Grey was sitting in a chair similar to Tucker's behind his daughter, hoping that what he had witnessed at the lab wasn't real. Mr. Gray then noticed the rest of the Fenton Family enter the room.
"Ah, Mr. and Mrs. Fenton." He said with a nervous smile as he reached out his hand for a shake. Mrs. Fenton was the first to reach out and shake it.
"Mr. Gray, how are you?" She said as she shook his hand. "How is he?" She asked him as she made her way over to Danny's bedside. She stroked his hair back, wondering while he felt oddly cold.
"Well, he is stable for now, but the doctors are unsure as to how to explain his condition. His core temperature reading anywhere between 90- and 94-degrees Fahrenheit, and his pulse is lower than it should be. The good news is that he is alive, but the strange thing is that he should have hypothermia. He shows no signs of symptoms from the ailment, and he seems to be extremely healthy for his age." "What is bizarre is the boy in the room across the hall from this one who is having bizarre symptoms as well. The difference is that he has been causing minor outages every time his heart rate seemed to flatline."
As Mr. Gray finished his sentence, the CEO and Owner of both STAR Labs and Axiom roll into the room in his wheelchair.
"Hello, Mr. Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Fenton." Dr. Wells said with a sad smile on his face. Mr. Gray, his daughter, the Fenton family, Sam, and Tucker all turned to see Dr. Wells there at the entrance to the room. "I just want to apologize for the predicament that your son is in currently, Mr. and Mrs. Fenton." "However, the reason why I am here is that I want to propose something to you. I want to take your son back to STAR Labs and have Dr. Caitlyn Snow watch over him as she is a brilliant biologist who I am sure can explain to you why your son is currently lying in a coma."
"But Dr. Wells," Maddie began, "I think my husband and I can handle this just fine. I mean, Danny is still alive, right, so that means we have to keep him stable until he wakes up."
"Ah, but Mrs. Fenton," Wells responded, "with those temperature fluctuations, he may not be able to wake up. These fluctuations are an indication of his instability, Mrs. Fenton." I have the equipment to stabilize his condition better." "There is one other thing, though. I have another boy from the other room who is going through something similar." There was a pregnant pause as he continued. "Since this whole incident is my responsibility, I thought to try and solve this problem as restitution to the families and their family members who were hurt tonight." "I have the latest and greatest technology to keep both young Daniel and the other boy sable until they wake up."
"Alright then, Dr. Wells," Mr. Fenton began, "we will agree to let you take Danny with you."
"You will be able to visit him while he is at the lab, though, and I am sure when he wakes, he will appreciate you doing so." Dr. Wells responded. With that, Dr. Wells left them in the room to get the nurse.
-Flashback end, two days after Barry and Danny wake up-
That was eight months ago when he agreed to let Dr. Wells take Danny to his lab. Dr. Wells did keep his word, though. The Fenton family had visited every single week since Danny first entered the lab. The first time the Fenton family saw Danny at STAR Labs in Central City, they met Detective Joe West and his Daughter Iris West who were visiting Barry Allen. Apparently, during the storm, Barry was struck by lightning while working on a case. Barry, like Danny, was in the same hospital, and when Wells came to them with a solution to stabilize him, they jumped at the chance. Joe, of course, was a little hesitant at first, but who wouldn't hesitate to give their son to a stranger?
Since the particle accelerator explosion, there have been many things that have happened. Humans with powers started to pop up across Central City, Amity Park, and Elmerton. That is, of course, not counting the ghosts appearing in all three burrows as well. When the power outages happened, the only two ghost portals known turned on at the same time, the power surges from the storm being enough to turn them on. There was no way that anyone would know that turning on the portals that spirits from the dimension called the Ghost Zone would start to flood the human plane.
Jack was getting supplies from the hardware store to make more ghost hunting equipment for himself and his wife. So, when Jack heard his cell phone ring with Dr. Wells as the caller ID to tell him that Danny was awake from his coma, Jack nearly screamed at the top of his lungs and jumped for joy at the news. As soon as he exited the store and got to the RV, Jack hung up the phone with Dr. Wells after telling Dr. Wells that the Fenton family would be there as soon as possible. Jack immediately called his wife at home and told her and Jazz to get ready because after they put the supplies away, they were going to STAR Labs to visit Danny.
-Sunday, The Fenton Family arrives at STAR Labs in downtown Central City-
Dr. Wells is at the entrance to the laboratory, waiting for the Fenton Family. He says, "Ah, Hello Mr. Fenton, Mrs. Fenton, and Jasmine, welcome to STAR Labs. Follow me to the lobby; Danny is waiting in the main control room. I will go get him for you."
Danny was in the central control room with Dr. Snow practicing his abilities when Dr. Wells walked in.
"Danny, your parents, are here to pick you up, and they are currently waiting for you in the lobby." "Grab your things, Danny its time for you to head home for now."
Both Danny and Dr. Wells started to head towards the lobby where Danny's parents were waiting. "Now, Dr. Wells said, remember what we talked about. I need you to come here every day after school to give you your regular check-up to look for any effects. I also need you here to do some training for you to get a hang for your powers," he continued. "Ah, here we are. Mr. and Mrs. Fenton are right there." The duo stopped in the lobby when Danny ran toward his parents to hug his family.
"Oh, my baby boy!" Mrs. Fenton shouted with joy. "Hey, Danny – o." His father screamed.
"We missed you so much." They said at the same time. Even Jazz got in on the hug, "It's good to see you, little brother." It was then that Detective Joe West walked in with Fentons and their son with Dr. Wells in the lobby.
"Ah, Detective West, so excellent for you to visit. Please follow me into the control room," Dr. Wells said as he saw the detective make his way towards him. As Wells began to wheel towards the control room with the detective, he turned around yelled out to Danny, "Danny, remember to tell your parents about our little arrangement when you get home. We don't want you to suffer any unforeseen issues in the future." After Wells said his piece, he wheeled towards the elevator, gesturing to the detective walking beside him to follow.
-In the elevator-
"Dr. Wells," Joe began, a little frustrated at the good Dr. for keeping Barry's heroics from him. "You know why I'm here." The elevator continued to operate until they reached the floor and began to head down the hall towards the control room. "I am angry at you for having kept Barry's heroics from me and sending him out to help me in a situation he had very little training on, to begin with. The same goes for that other kid. How did he introduce himself to me again; yes, I remember now: Danny Phantom. Now, I will not reveal Danny's secret to his parents since I am not his parent, but it's evident from how he interacted with Barry while running around in that outfit. Danny Fenton looks precisely like the kid I saw when that tornado was started by Mark Mardon. Danny may not have been able others, but I know that it was him. Danny Phantom even sounds similar." "Dr. Wells, I need you to…."
"I am sorry, Detective West," Dr. Wells interrupted as Joe continued to become more frustrated. "I cannot stop them from doing what they were destined to do. I know you don't like sending either of them into danger on a whim, but they make an excellent team. They are constantly in training, and as long as someone is behind their commlink guiding them to be the heroes they need to be, I will fully support them to the end. As long as they have each other's backs, there shouldn't be any issues going forward."
As they entered the control room, Detective West sighed, and Barry looked behind him to see Joe standing there with Dr. Wells next to him.
"Joe?" Barry asked, startled to see his adoptive father at STAR Labs. "What are you doing…."
"Barry," Joe interrupted. I am here to see you for one, and because I tracked you and Danny Phantom back to this place. Had it been you alone, that would be one thing, but Danny didn't think that I or anyone else would track him or you back to STAR Labs." "Does Danny not know to use his powers to conceal himself in some way?" Joe asked.
Upon hearing his adoptive father's explanation, Barry gave himself a face slap. Frustrated, Barry yelled, "That idiot. I can't believe he forgot to use his invisibility to avoid detection!" "Thanks for letting me know, Joe; I will remember to call him later that his secret identity was almost revealed." Barry continued.
"So, about my secret," Barry began, but Joe interrupted him, "Save it, Barry, I heard everything from Wells. I am going to support you in every way I can, and we need to keep this from Iris because if I know her if she finds out, she may not like it at all." The detective then started to walk out of the control room when he turned back to Barry, "Oh, and Barry," Joe asked.
"Yes, Joe?" Barry responded. "Remember to tell Danny that I know his secret, so when I come back here at some point, everyone is on the same page. It was good to see you, Barry. I am happy that you are alive and well again. Both you and Danny did a good job assisting me with Mark. Given that the ghost sightings in both Central City and the other Burrows have started to increase, we may actually need you both to contain them." With that, Joe turned around and walked toward the elevator that got him to the control room.
-The drive home, in the Fenton RV-
The drive home in the Fenton RV was a bit awkward, to say the least. After so long, the family couldn't find a way to ask Danny how he was genuinely feeling after getting zapped by the Axiom Ghost Portal. When the family got home, it was Jazz that finally spoke up.
"Danny," she began, "I know that you are hurting, and we couldn't find a way to ask you how you are really feeling about the accident. In the past eight months, we've had to deal with rogue ghosts on the loose and humans with powers. But in all that time, there wasn't one moment that we weren't thinking of you. I know that going through the accident had to have taken a mental toll on you, so could you just talk to someone?"
"Jazz," Danny began with a sigh. "I know that you have been worried about me, but when I woke up a couple days before you were aware that I was awake, I had plenty of people to talk to. I had Barry, Dr. Wells, Caitlyn, and Cisco, who were all there when I woke up." With a sad smile that Jazz couldn't quite place a reason for, Danny continued, "There is no need to worry about my mental health. I will be going back to STAR Labs to get checked out every day after school."
"But Danny," Jazz was about to respond. "No buts, Jazz." Danny interrupted. "Like I already said, I have plenty of people to talk to." "Now I am going to go upstairs to call Sam and Tucker to give the good news." With that, Danny went upstairs to his room to give them a call. As he went up the stairs to his room, a blue mist exited his mouth. Without getting a chance to ask himself why his body just spewed out a cloud of blue smoke, Skulker, who had just turned visible, decided to make himself known to Danny. Skulker then shot a net from the wrist gadget on his suit without missing a beat, capturing Danny in the middle of the room.
"Ah, the ghost child in its natural habitat," Skulker said while a creepy smile appeared on his face. "Pity, though," Skulker continued. "I thought you'd put up much more of a challenge."
"Oh, I will!" Danny shouted in response as he transformed into his ghost half and phased through the net, kicking Skulker in the head pushing him to the wall opposite himself. Skulker just smiled, "Good, that is what I like to see in my prey. Alert and on guard. Stay just like that ghost child; I want to make sure I beat you at your best.
Then, Skulker grabs Danny by the head, changing intangible as he did so and dragging Danny to the ghost portal the Fentons had in their basement. As they enter the cellar, Danny asks, "Who the hell are you!?"
"I am Skulker, the Ghost Zone's greatest hunter, and I will be taking you…." Skulker never finished the sentence as he heard someone through his earpiece say to let the boy go and that they had more than enough data on the boy for now. Realizing that he couldn't win the argument with Vlad, Skulker put Danny down and began to fly away, leaving Danny confused. As soon as Skulker was gone, Danny realized that his room was a mess, and all the commotion the fight caused would lead to questions from his parents and sister. He immediately became intangible and flew towards his room where his parents were waiting. Danny began to explain to his parents that something fell from one of his shelves and that he would clean it up himself. His parents, while skeptical, just let the issue drop without any problem. Danny then proceeded with what he was going to do: skype his friends and let them know he was awake. Ring, Ring, the skype call went as the computer tried to reach Sam and Tucker. Sam was the first to answer the call.
"Hey, Sam, how's it going?" Danny asked with a smile on his face.
"Danny, Danny, is that you?" Sam replied. "You're awake?" As soon as she said that, Tucker finally came online to join them. Realizing that Danny was online and talking to Sam, he greeted them both with a giant smile on his face, "Danny, you're awake?" It's good to see you after eight months; we have so much to catch up on. Danny then began to tell them everything minus Skulker attacking at his home. He wasn't sure they would react to him have ghost powers after the accident. After Danny caught up with his friends, he shut off his computer. Given that it was already late, he slipped under his covers and went off into dreamland.
-Monday Morning, school-
It was a typical Monday morning. When Danny woke up this morning, he expected to use his powers to fly to school, if only to avoid the school bus. While he didn't use his powers to go to school, Jazz had actually offered to so because he had just woken up from his eight-month slumber. As Danny made his way to his friends who were waiting at his locker, Dash, the school bully and football star walked up from behind him shouted, "Hey Fenturd!" Danny sighed and turn around, only to be punched in the face by Dash.
"Ow, Dash!" Danny shouted. "What the hell was that for?!"
"Oh, that was just a welcome back to school gift from me to you," Dash responded with a smirk.
"Dash, shouldn't you be kicking a puppy something?" Danny responded.
"Actually, yeah!" Dash shouted in kind. He was going to try and punch Danny again, but Dash saw Mr. Lancer was listening nearby. "Watch it, Fenton, because next time, Lancer won't be around to save you." Dash just turned around and walked away.
As Danny walked up to his locker, he greeted his friends with a friendly hello. His friends, who had been standing there the entire time watching Danny's altercation, gave him a worried look.
Upon seeing their faces, Danny responded, "Guys, there's nothing to worry about; I can handle Dash. Besides, his punch actually didn't hurt at all, unlike before the accident."
After sharing a look with Tucker, Sam responded, "But Danny, ever since you woke up, you've been acting a little strange. For example, last year, you were the most intelligent guy in class; you were shy and not very confident. However, you just stood up to Dash without breaking a sweat." With that, the trio headed toward The Guys in White ghost hunting class.
On their way to class, Danny asked, "Since when did we have a ghost hunting course?"
"Well, since there are ghosts just about everywhere and the police are responsible for any metahumans but don't have the equipment to take care of ghosts, your parents thought it would be best that someone teaches how to have the students protect themselves. Since your parents were focused on waiting until you had awakened, they couldn't teach the class. So, the school district hired the government's Guys in White to do the job. Unfortunately, in everyone's opinion, they do a pretty piss poor job of it, and they don't help anyone at all in the class." Sam replied.
"The other issue with them is that all they do is spread propaganda. The Guys in White say all ghosts are evil and must be destroyed, but I don't believe that all. This is especially true since there have been reports of the Guys in White causing more damage to property than the ghost, or if the ghost wasn't harming anyone, the Guys in White would just start attacking the poor thing without justification." She continued.
"Hopefully, their views of ghosts will change thanks to the new hero. Apparently, witnesses saw a red blur and a black-white blur helping out the police the other night. One of the figures used powers that only a ghost could have, or that is what the reports say. The two are heroes as both defended the officers attempting to stop a meta who created a twister of some sort. If it wasn't the two figures, the twister would have destroyed at least part of the city."
As the trio stopped at the door to the classroom, Tucker finished the conversation by saying, "The black-white blur needs to get props for at least attempting to put down the notion that all ghosts were evil. Besides that, it doesn't make sense to call all spirits evil anyway. If we go by the standard that The Guys in White put out, then all humans are evil and need to be destroyed."
As Tucker finished his sentence and the trio entered the room, Danny gasped, and a blue mist exited his mouth. Both Tucker and Sam saw what had just occurred, but before they could ask Danny about it, Agent O greeted them by asking the trio why they were standing in the middle of the doorway and asked for them to take their seats. That is when everything hit the fan, and a loud, obnoxious voice made itself known as everyone's phones, tablets, and the various tech started to float for no reason.
The voice said, "IT IS I, TECHNUS! MASTER OF TECHNOLOGY AND ALL THAT IS BEEPING!" The now named Technus then made himself visible to the entire class, and everyone except the teachers started to scream. The Guys in White drew their weapons, began to tell Technus that he was under arrest, told him to be prepared to be destroyed, and then proceeded to open fire. As they opened fire the ghost, Technus went intangible, dodging the shots as he flew through the classroom ceiling. The teachers were about to follow the spirit, but they turned around and told the class to wait before they did. Realizing that he needed to do something, Danny began to get up to go get changed into his ghost form when the teachers left. When Danny left, though, his two best friends were left wondering what had changed Danny so dramatically in the past eight months. Upon realizing that they needed to find out, they both decided to follow their friend to see where he was going and why.
A/N: That is it for this chapter. I apologize for taking so long in writing this chapter. I was hoping to have this chapter up by last week but I had just gotten the vaccine for COVID and the side effects prevented me from focusing on the chapter and as a result, made this chapter take longer than I would have liked.
