Chapter 4: I think I made a friend
Fortunately, the flying man hit the window which was bullet and human proof. Yuji said he made sure to make the building as safe as possible due its close proximity to the UA High School. I wish I knew that before I moved to duck under a table giving the perverts a table away a view I didn't want to give. Who knew petticoats under dresses do not bend?
The police arrived and pulled the man away as the hero walked into the tea shop. "Have no fear for I am here!" He yelled when entering looking around the room. Is it part of training for heroes to have a loud voice? Between this guy and Present Mic, they're loud enough during the day. Suddenly the hero bent to stare at me under the table. "So, you are…. that's nice." I crawled out from under the table and straightened my skirt.
I heard a squeak behind the cash register. Who knew that bug eyes can get bigger? Yuji wiped at his apron and ran straight to the hero. "ALL MIGHT! WHAT A PLEASURE." Yuji shyly handed the hero a paper to get an autograph. All Might signed the paper and turned to me.
"Hello! I apologize for the shock. In your condition there shouldn't be a lot of surprises I'm told."
"My condition?" What condition am I in that I shouldn't get shocked? Definitely not pregnant. No heart conditions from what the doctors said.
"Well….Present Mic told us all about what happened that day." Yuji ran to hang the autograph next to Present Mic's autograph on the wall. It was starting to become a collection.
"Oh….well I'm fine thanks. Did you want to order something?"
"It's on the house!" Yuji cried across the room.
"Thank you for the offer but I must get back to work. I have classes to teach" All Might stared at the students who were red in the face looking elsewhere. "Students! Classes are about to resume!" I looked up at the clock to see it was almost 1. The perverted duo called out a "Yes sir," paid for their meal and ran out. All Might left through the door after the students after flashing a smile that glinted to Yuji and me.
Fortunately, the tea shop was closing for a three hour pause before the afterschool crowd appeared. I went to the table the students to clean up the plates. Unfortunately, in this world it was considered rude to give tips or I would have gathered some to go shopping. Once everything was cleaned up, I left the tea shop to explore the neighborhood. What better way to learn of where I am except to adventure out?

Sometimes people say culture shock is a delayed reaction. I guess mine came really late as I sat in a mall drinking a milkshake and observing people between reading the diary. An anthropologist once said the best way to learn about a society is to sit and watch people. Well people watching here I come. So far from my understanding, this world has quirks. They're some sort of genetic change that was caused by evolution. Not sure on that one since I don't see how evolution caused a girl to be a giant lizard in a mini dress with a voice that sounded like nails on a chalk board. She was leaning on the counter in the food court trying to flirt with a guy behind the counter who randomly blew bubbles from his ears as he was blushing at what she was saying while trying to not look downwards.
At a table near me, there was a kid throwing a tantrum on what would happen if they were quirkless. Their parents were telling them how it such a horrible thing would never happen. It really isn't that bad. I don't know how I feel of my norm being treated like it's a tragedy.
I decided to try to learn more of the former inhabitant here so that maybe she wrote that pin to her bank in the diary of her school days and sipped my milkshake.
"Dear Diary,
I attempted to make friends today in Chemistry class. Three girls told me they'd be my friend, but friends had to help each other out. They told me they were hungry. I ran to get them some pork buns from the lunchroom after class. They seemed to like it. I think I made friends. Their quirks are so amazing! One can float objects in the air. Another can grow plants from the seeds instantly. It was so pretty seeing roses bloom. The third girl has a beautiful voice. When she opens her mouth its like all the guys are captivated by her. I'm glad I was transferred to this new school. Maybe I can finally make friends!"
So, I might not have found anything on the bank pin or security question hints. What I did find was this lady was a very lonely person to try to win friends by buying food. Why is it bad being quirkless? Am I the weird one here? And can people automatically tell if someone has a quirk? All Might was bulky but I couldn't tell he had a quirk if I saw him on the street. I would just think he was a body builder type of guy. Present Mic was loud, but I can be loud too if I screams. How is that a quirk?
Suddenly I felt my purse behind me move a little. I always put my bag behind me to lean against. I turned my head and saw a kid who couldn't be older than twelve with her hand in my purse. I reached out to grab her hand and suddenly felt my skin burn. Her arm was turning red. By pure reaction I elbowed her causing her to fall. I saw people were starting to look and the little girl had fright in her eyes. This was just a little kid. Why is she trying to steal my wallet?
"Miss, is everything alright?" I turned to see a guy that others in the crowd were murmuring about. Apparently, he was a pro hero patrolling. I looked back to the kid who was looking down. "Yup! Klutz that I am I accidently surprised my sister!" I held out a hand to the kid "You alright?" She knocked my hand away. The pro hero was coming closer. As she got up to try to escape, I grabbed her in a one arm hug. "She's at the age that she's edgy. Sorry everyone! Nothing to see here!" I swiftly put all the stuff in my bag with one hand while holding onto the kid. I think she realized that she was now on the radar of a lot of people. My hand was aching a little from the heat she gave me. Thankfully, the milkshake was still cold enough to ease the pain.
"Walk with me kid if you want to leave with no issues." I whispered as I pulled her along awkwardly smiling to the observers as I walked out of the mall. I pulled her to an alley near the mall and finally had time to really look at her. She had some holes in her clothes. A smudge of dirt on her left cheek. I had her blocked from the view of the sidewalk with her back against a trash bin. She looked less than happy. I pulled out my wallet and gave her the last two thousand yen in my wallet till payday. It ached to lose that money, but she looked like she could use it more.
"Why?" She asked grabbing the money.
"Why not?"
"You don't know me! Why are you giving me your money?!"
"I give my money to a lot of people I don't know. Doesn't mean anything." I pulled out a business card with the address of the tea shop on it. "Let's be friends, kid! You and me!" I handed her the card. "Next meal on me at that address. If you get hungry then come on down. We got some good sandwiches."
"Nuriko." She stated as she grabbed the card.
"Pardon?"
"My name is Nuriko. Why are you offering me food?"
"Well, Nuriko, I'm Iris. Don't think its free. You'll have to pay. For every five questions you answer me. I'll give you a free meal. I won't ask anything personal. I just have some questions on this city." Nuriko started to look confused. To be honest, I didn't plan anything out but decided to wing it. If I asked Yuji questions about this area, then I'm sure he'd be concerned. So, why not have a kid who grew up here give me some intel on what I was thrown into.
Nuriko turned and walked into the alley. I wasn't going to stop her. I didn't know enough of this world to know if I should step in or if she was fine. "Dinner starts at 5 today! See you there, Nuriko-chan!" I waved watching her squirm at me adding a term of endearment. I might have had some amusement at her awkwardness. Guess I should go back to work and prepare for the later shift. I stared at my hand that was a little red. Maybe I should find some gloves too, so no one knew of what happened today.
