AN: Thanks for the faves, follows, and review! I really appreciate it!
Something the human didn't understand was that Miko and Eijiro had truly shared everything. Always. Even their egg. Neither of them were sure when they became sentient, but they were both aware of each other at some point in their development. It was unclear how long they waited in their egg, how much time passed whilst they waited to be hatched; but it was in that egg that the two dragons spent their time developing into their own selves, feeling each other's presence, sharing more than their space, but also their soul.
Then suddenly, they began to feel a pull. Something was calling to them, faintly, too far to make out what it was from their place in their protective shell. Both dragons were curious about this strange new thing, though the brother was much more curious, eager to seek it out, eager to find, eager to hatch. His sister was not.
She had grown used to their shell, wary of the dangers she knew lingered outside of its protection, for it was only by their magic that they'd been left alone for so long, but she was extremely aware that her brother could be lost to her. In all their time together, she began to fear separation, and what that meant for the two of them. And so, unbeknownst to her brother, she began to deny the call. While her brother was eager to answer, she ignored the whispers, wishing more and more that they'd be free of them.
To her, the voice was a simple ringing in her ears, constant, annoying, and impossible to ignore. And if it said it knew she heard it, which she didn't, she was already spoken for. She'd spent years with the only one she'd ever loved within the forest. She continued to deny the mysterious siren, content with the plain existence she'd shared for centuries with her brother, but ultimately, afraid of what they'd be risking if they followed it into the intangible unknown.
Then, just like the day they first felt the call, they knew it was time to answer. Her brother, always more eager, began to shift and kick at their shell, restlessly breaking his way out, urging his sister to follow, and she relented easily, because although fearful, she could never deny her brother anything, especially when she felt the pull too no matter how much she denied it.
With their combined efforts they made quick work of their egg, and hatched. They were assaulted by new smells and sounds, blinded by the light of a sun they weren't aware of previously. Frightened by new textures, they waited until they blindly explored their new surroundings with their senses, though they were always aware of where they were relative to each other, and they never strayed far from their shells. Something told them that they were to wait right where they hatched.
But what were they waiting for? It kept them awake, wondering what awaited them, but they knew it was meant for them. Every day they waited it became a little harder to remain calm as their magic grew and they deny the longing that came with it. Was it really out there? Did it know they were waiting? They felt it approaching them as the call became stronger and they wondered, could it feel them too?
When it finally reached them, they were startled from a sunbath, and opened their eyes to a very strange, unsightly creature with two legs. No scales, no claws, and no fangs. It didn't even have fur. So they did the only thing they could and investigated. It fought them as they nipped and clawed at it, trying to understand what it was, what it was doing, what did it want?
Why did it feel like they were meant to be together? Why did it feel like that something they'd been waiting all their lives for was finally here? WhywhywhywhywhatisthiswhatSHAPPENI— There was a swell and a snap, and all was right in the world.
Brother was ecstatic. He loved this new creature. This human.
She hated him.
The more brother played with him, treated him like he was the one who shared an egg with him, who slept beside him for millennia, kept him warm and in good company, the more she resented him and the bond that ancient magic had formed between their souls. She hated that she was petty and jealous for she ignored him until it began to hurt Brother and the bond between them began to suffer. So she did what she had to and bore his presence for all that it irritated her.
Where are you going?
Don't leave me alone!
How am I (we) supposed to follow you into the unknown?
She watched him with keen eyes, eager to find a reason that would persuade Brother to abandon him, however foolhardy the task was. She knew she was denying the inevitable. No matter how much she resisted, the bond kept growing stronger each day they were together, as surely as there were scales on her back.
So when she decided that she had been foolish long enough, she decided to take their small group to the cave where she knew their magic would continue to grow. Brother, already aware of her intentions, didn't fight her when she left them behind. He was happy to help. Things had finally begun to settle in the cave, their shared bond grew stronger than ever, and then Katsuki, their human, had to ruin everything by taking them back to his village.
Which is where they were now, left without scales or wings; and in their stead, human fingers and toes and the expectation to act as if nothing ever happened.
Eijiro took this much better than Miko.
In their shared room, the two magical beings sat with their knees together as they regarded each other with serious faces they'd been unable to outwardly express before they transformed into humans. Eijiro took in his sister's face with new eyes, seeing the pained look of defeat and bitter betrayal in the furrow of her brows and uncertain lock of her jaw.
"Seriously, brother, I don't understand how you can stand him. Talking to us the way he does." She tried to hide the hurt in her voice with a scoff, but even as freshly minted humans Eijiro knew better.
Patting her knee sympathetically, he tried to ease the ache in her heart. Using the dewey expression he discovered was just as effective with a human face as it was with a dragon one, he implored her, "Give him a chance, sister. He's doing his best."
Miko tried to brush him off, but she displayed a rare show of vulnerability as she looked to him from beneath lowered lashes. "Do you think we'll figure out how to change back soon?" Eijiro's heart ached with her.
"We will," he said firmly. The strength in his tone did not betray the inauthentic feeling in his belly. He hated to lie to his sister, but for her, he would take on any burdens if it would ease her however miniscule. "Don't worry so much! Do you really hate being a human that bad?" Wordlessly, her hand reached out to his and held it in a steady grip as they shared an undeniable uncertainty.
Whatever she'd been thinking appeared on her face as it scrunched up and Eijiro felt the muscles on his own mirror hers as she struggled to process her feelings. "I don't know...don't you miss flying? Feeling free? Besides, I think Katsuki likes me better when I'm normal. He's more irritable when I'm like this."
He pursed his lips impatiently. "That's not true at all." The weight began to make him tremble.
She held his gaze fiercely, and turquoise met ruby. "He likes you better, brother. Don't pretend it's not true."
Eijiro stayed silent for a moment, trying to refute his sister's words. He was very well aware of their tumultuous relationship but hoped coming to the human village would've encouraged the two to get along better. It was difficult to put the blame on only one of them, since they were both extremely stubborn and neither knew how to communicate well. It often left him with the uncomfortable task of being their liaison. From where he and his beloved sister were seated in their shared space, Eijiro reached forward and placed his heavy hands on his sister's shoulders, leaning forward until their noses brushed. With an intensity that was so unlike him, Miko's breath stilled as his gaze begged her to take his next words to heart and she could do nothing but stare into her brother's eyes and take heed.
"No matter how you two feel about each other, you will always be my sister. We share a soul. It's you and me. Always ." He squeezed her shoulders reassuringly as her eyes glistened. "But now we must share our soul with a new brother. Something more than magic: family. It's you, it's me, it's us ."
"I know it's hard," he continued as he glanced at the tears beginning to form along her waterline. "But we must work together because now all we have is each other ." Tears began to fall like snow drops down Miko's otherworldly skin and she nodded her head minutely, still staring into his eyes and their noses tickled like butterfly kisses. "Okay, Eijiro," she sniffed. "Okay."
And with that it was like the spell broke and Eijiro threw his arms around his sister's head and pulled her close to his chest. He held her tight in his arms, silently rocking away her tearful sniffles as she clutched to the front of his chest with a firm grip. Suddenly, they began to hear a slight tinkling over the sound of her tears and, curiously, they pulled away from their reassuring embrace. Peering downwards, they caught a flash of small sparkling diamonds between their feet.
Gingerly, Eijiro picked one up and looked at it with an endearing expression of bafflement as he held it between their faces. The tears Miko had been crying hardened as they fell from her cheeks until they tumbled to the floor as radiant diamonds. Without taking her eyes off it, Miko simply said, "Give them to Katsuki," and that was that.
They collected the diamonds into a small velvet purse they'd nicked from a nearby merchant and hid it between the folds of their clothes, promising to give it to Katsuki the first chance they got. Which was much sooner than either of them would have expected.
"You old hag! Lemme go! I said I don't need these stupid history lessons!"
"If your dragons need history lessons then you might as well sit right alongside them and get history lessons too!"
Ahead of them in the busy market, Mitsuki was dragging Katsuki by his ears straight towards Eijiro and Miko, who clapped a heavy hand against her back. "Looks like he's getting his gift right now!" he cheered happily.
"Seems the gods enjoy torturing me," she grumbled.
"Careful, Miko. The humans might think you're the first beast that believes in their gods," he teased with a winking grin.
"Ha! As if. That was a throwaway comment, brother. Nothing more, nothing less." Although their gods do seem to enjoy making me miserable , she thought as the blonde brat made his way closer to them. If only the wait for their impending meeting could have been anything but brief.
"You damn brat! I can't believe you! Tamer of two Katsuki the dragon lord my ass! We're gonna find those two dragons of yours and we're all gonna sit nice together and enjoy a good history lesson."
"Uh oh. Looks like she's spotted us," Eijiro warned.
"Eijiro, Miko! Get your asses over here! We're heading to the learning room!"
With a gentle nudge from her minotaur, the dragons followed behind the two blondes and the current clan head was able to wrangle each wayward child into her private sitting room quickly enough, though with much complaint and violence from her only son, but she'd long since learned how to handle his tantrums. Eijiro was the only one feeling cheerful enough to appreciate Mitsuki's dedication to rearing the Clan's next generation, unlike Miko and Katsuki who sat on either side of the red haired dragon grumbling and refusing to look at each other. Mitsuki sighed to herself. This was going to be a long night.
Still she didn't become Mitsuki the Minotaur Tamer by backing down from a challenge. And with that she stood in front of her son and his dragons with a feral grin, eating up their apprehension like she'd skipped breakfast. "Since you're all here today, I've decided to change the curriculum up a bit." Her grin widened and the silver tooth on the right side of her mouth flashed.
"Ever heard of the Dragon Lord Alfor?"
Omake:
"Have you no sense of modesty?"
"I don't see what the big deal is. I was naked the day I hatched, and I was still naked while you led brother and I around the forest and into the cave. You humans have such a strange aversion to nudity. You're all made exactly the same!"
"No, we're not, you stupid lizard! Men and women are not the same! Start coverin' up or you'll keeping distracting all the men and traumatize the children!"
"It's not my problem if your silly human men can't control themselves. Besides, you never yell at Eijiro when he's naked."
"Eijiro doesn't run around naked! He's always dressed!"
"A lie! Lie, lie, lie! He takes off his clothes all the time, he hates them just as much as me!"
"He keeps his pants on and you don't! It's different for men!"
"How?!" She threw her hands up exasperatedly. "I don't understand you silly creatures. Fine. I'll keep my pants on," she huffed.
"Not just your pants! Your top too! Don't let me hear about you running around naked again, ya hear me?!"
"Yeah I heard you!"
