Chapter 4:
By the time, the morning feast was over the news of Oliver and Katie had spread around the school. Angelina had whispered to George and told him about what had happened at Hogsmeade. When lunchtime rolled around the story had changed to Katie and Oliver had been snogging in the carriage on the way home. Katie was mortified. Not wanting to face Oliver in the least bit. She had not even bothered to show up to lunch.
It was currently her break period and Katie had been planning to fly around for a while. She was excited to try out her new broom. When noticed Marcus from across the lawn, who was quick on his feet. Making his way across the quidditch pitch, directly towards Oliver Wood. "Oh no, this can't be good" She muttered to herself. When the boys were feet apart, she heard shouting and saw Marcus shove Oliver making him stumble back a bit.
Katie rushed over as fast as she could only catching the middle of the conversation. "She would never go for a bloke like you" Oliver was saying to Marcus. She saw teachers scrambling to get to them, wanting to break it up as soon as they could.
"Believe it or not, some girls can't resist my good looks." Marcus quipped back. Katie was still far away from them as she picked up her pace. Students had started to circle around them wanting to see the scene unfold in front of them.
"I didn't know that forcing yourself upon a girl is considered a way to pick up a lass" Oliver threw back. At this point Marcus punched him in the face and the boys tumbled to the ground fighting. It was not long before the teachers had made their way to them breaking them up and bringing them into the school.
She could not believe that this did not surprise her anymore. In her gut she knew that Marcus had been angry, with the way he had gone after Oliver. The question was why? Katie assumed he had heard the rumor about her snogging Oliver, could that be the reason? No, it couldn't be jealousy. He was simply fake flirting with her to get into her head, a quidditch strategy would make more sense. There had to be a better explanation than he plain ol' liked her. That meant that he had feelings, and those feelings were hurt. Was he just covering it up with anger and lashing out? Or was she simply over thinking things.
Unsure of how to feel about the whole thing, Katie went to go find her friends. She needed to tell them what was going on. Maybe they would give her some insight that could help her. Eventually she found the girls in the common room. When she asked to speak to them, they went to their room and she spilled everything. The meeting before Christmas break, the Hogsmeade trip and lastly the events that happened today. Finally finishing the story, the other two girls sat there gawking at her.
Alicia was first to voice her opinion "So, Marcus is jealous over Oliver? I don't know about you girls, but that's the first time I've heard of Marcus punching someone. I mean sure he can be a prat, but he doesn't just go beating people up for no good reason."
Angelina was next to address the issue "Hold up though, which one do you fancy?" Angelina asked as she sat with her stomach on the bed elbows digging into the mattress while her fists were supporting her chin.
Before Katie could fumble over an explanation she was cut off by Alicia "and please don't just tell us what you think we want to hear, how do you actually feel about them?"
"Oliver is a great friend, but I think that's all it is. I mean sure I could see myself dating him, but he feels like a safe choice." Before the girls could even assume that meant that she liked Marcus, she nipped it in the butt "That doesn't mean that I like Flint though. He's rude, arrogant, a masochist and all-around nasty guy."
"I say you bang them both and see which one is better" Angelina threw in, both the other girls turned and glared at her.
"I know you think Oliver's the safe option, but you should give him a chance" Alicia's replied trying to encourage Katie "he could be really good for you."
"I don't think he likes me, not like that, and I don't know, the timing is wrong." Katie knew she was making a lot of excuses.
"When is it ever right?" Alicia asked. She always was the one who had the best advice. Alicia knew how to handle any situation that was thrown her way, while Angelina was better at entertaining and keeping a lighthearted conversation. The girl really could give some bad advice sometimes. "I don't know, all I'm hearing is a bunch of excuses on why you can't."
"I guess I could try to put myself out there" Katie gave in.
She spent the rest of the night thinking it over. The only problem with the girl's theory was if she did start dating Oliver would Marcus attack him again? Was it only a onetime thing? What if she dated someone else would he do the same thing? There was no way, it had to be something to do with quidditch. Marcus just wanted to rile up Oliver and get into his head. He was playing a game and doing very well at it.
Katie stayed up late that night, still feeling unwell. Her head pounded as she sat in front of the fireplace in the common room. Watching the fire, she sat with her arms draped around her legs with her chin tucked between her legs and chest. She wore black shorts and a blue long-sleeved shirt. After a while Katie could hear footsteps coming down from the boy's dorm rooms. A tired looking Oliver padded down the steps in grey pajama bottoms and a long-sleeved white shirt. "Is that seat taken?"
She let out an almost inaudible snort, shaking her head no. "Are you okay?" Katie asked noticing the bruise on his left cheek bone, where Marcus had hit him. She lifted her hand and brushed her fingers against the side of his face.
"I've had worse, plenty of bludgers have hit me in the face" He spoke softly. "You doing, okay? You don't look well" placing the back of his palm against her forehead.
"Just a really bad headache is all" She paused unsure if she should ask about the fight or not. "Can I ask what happened? I saw him punch you and then you wrestled." She dropped her hand to the side and turned her body to him. So, her left leg was up on the couch tucked underneath her.
"You need to stay away from him" Oliver warned her "He made a comment that my girlfriend fancies him" he made air quotes as he said girlfriend.
"Oliver, I hope you know, I don't like Flint, and I want nothing to do with him" Katie said sounding confident.
"What about you and McLaggen?" He asked not knowing if he wanted an answer or not.
She smiled knowing where this was going "No, I don't fancy him either." He lifted his hand, lightly playing with her hair that dangled in front of her face. Brushing it behind her ear he started to lean forward, their noses touching. Katie leaned forward the rest of the way and pressed her lips to his, it was a sweet kiss, and she smiled into it.
Pulling back, he rested his forehead to hers "I like you, Katie."
"I like you too" she whispered back her lips brushing against his, before returning to a soft kiss.
The following morning Katie sat in her usual spot. Only this time Oliver and Angelina had traded places. Oliver now on her left and Angelina a little further down the table next to Fred and George. The owls soon started dropping letters and packages to students. She eyed the ceiling looking for her family's owl, surprised when an owl she didn't recognize dropped a package in front of her. Inside was a leather-bound red journal that did not want to open. Reading the card, it read 'From Theodore'.
Unsure of what was inside she tried a couple unlocking charms and wasn't successful. She huffed. Katie was worried about her parents; she had sent four letters in the last two weeks and still no word from either of them.
"You okay lass?" He asked sincerely noticing her mood change. He took her hand in his and began to rub the back of it.
"Yeah, I'm fine" trying her best to be convincing even adding a smile after. She wasn't though, her head still hurt, and she hadn't gotten much sleep. It didn't help that her family was radio silent on her. She was worried that they somehow knew that she had snuck out to Hogsmeade. Or what if they knew that she had spoken with her uncle after they had said not to.
He went back to chatting with Fred and Katie continued to stare off. Refusing to look at the Slytherin table. She finished her breakfast and went to her first class with Alicia. Oliver kissed her forehead before they went their opposite ways.
By the time the end of the year rolled around Katie and Oliver had been officially dating for over 5 months. Oliver was her first real boyfriend, and she genuinely loved the time they shared. When they were practicing, he did not treat her any differently which made her feel relieved. Worrying that it would get in the way of quidditch or cause problems. That had not been the case, even during their last match against Ravenclaw. He treated her just like a teammate while they were on the pitch.
Katie avoided Marcus the rest of the year luckily. The only time she had really seen him, was when she attended the Hufflepuff Vs. Slytherin match. Even going to the lengths of keeping her eyes trained on only the Hufflepuff's.
The end of the year was sad for her, she was going to miss her friends. Trying to remind herself that even though she was going back to her old school she could still owl them. Oliver had taken it hard and had made her promise to try and come back to Hogwarts the following year, and if not promising to spend holidays with her. Not wanting to end their relationship, so she had agreed and gave him a final peck on the lips before searching for her dad.
When she finally found him, he looked disheveled, looking like he had not slept in weeks. He had dark bags under his eyes and his shirt was wrinkled and untucked. She ran up to him and threw her arms around him pulling him into a tight bear hug, only receiving a small squeeze back. She looked up at him confused "Dad what's wrong?"
I would never forget what he said that day "It's your mother, she's in the hospital."
