AN – Thank you, thank you for all your lovely reviews! I'm sorry for taking so long to post an update, it's been a busy few days. Also, I don't know if 39th and Lennox really exists… but its something Alicia Keys says in "You Don't Know My Name".
Chapter Four
'Hi Maura! This is Jane from the bar on 39th and Lennox…'
Backspace…
'Hey Maura. Jane from the Robber here. Are you free for coffee sometime today?'
No, backspace.
'Hi.' And she accidentally hit send on just that one word.
"Great. Now she'll think she has a stalker."
Jane was standing in her bathroom biting the side of her thumbnail while trying to come up with an acceptable text message to ask Maura out for coffee but now she's sent just one word and before she could think of something else to type the phone in her hand pinged indicating a new message.
'Hello, Jane.'
Deciding to bite the bullet, she hit the call button before she could talk herself out of it.
Maura answered between the second and third ring.
"This is Maura Isles."
"This is Jane Rizzoli," Jane replied, the smirk evident in her voice.
"I was wondering when I'd hear from you," came Maura's sweet reply.
"I'm sorry about that. I was texting you and my finger seemed to slip, so I decided to call instead. I hope that's okay?" Jane said moving out of the bathroom to sit on her bed.
"Of course. I don't mind."
"How did you know it was me?" Jane asked curiously.
"I haven't given my number out to anyone else in the last 24 hours, so I thought it safe to assume that it was you," Maura said matter-of-factly.
"Yeah, that makes," Jane let out a small laugh. "So, I was wondering if you're free for that coffee sometime today?"
"I actually just walked into the coffee shop down the road from the bar, if you wanted to join me?" Maura offered boldly.
"Oh… only if you don't mind," Jane said looking down at herself realizing that she was wearing sweatpants and a tank top.
"You don't have to join me now if it's too short notice, but I won't mind if you do," Maura said.
"No, no, no. I can be there in ten minutes," Jane hastily replied.
"If you're sure, I'll see you in ten minutes," Maura said softly before ending the call.
Jane hastily threw her phone on the bed and opened her closet looking for something casual but attractive to wear to her coffee date.
Is this a date? She thought after deciding on a black skinny jean and a red button-down blouse. She was glad she decided to blow dry her hair that morning, so it didn't take much to tame her wild mane.
She decided to apply some light make-up and some lip gloss and looked at herself in the mirror. Yes, this is a date.
Once she deemed herself ready, she made her way out of her apartment and to the coffee shop.
Upon entering, she immediately spotted the honey blonde sitting in the back of the coffee shop typing on her laptop. Her hair was down, soft looking curls falling down her shoulders with a blue top that showed just a little bit of her chest.
Rubbing her hands, that were now sweaty, on her jeans Jane made her way over to where Maura was sitting.
"Hey," she said softly when she was close enough.
"Jane," Maura said in greeting with a bright smile, closing her laptop and gesturing for Jane to sit in the empty seat across from her. "Please sit."
"Thank you," Jane said while slipping into the seat. "Are you sure I'm not interrupting? You seemed very focused when I walked in," she said gesturing to Maura's laptop.
"I did come here to work on a few things, but I'm glad you're here," Maura said honestly, staring into the intense deep brown eyes in front of her.
"Hello ladies," the waitress interrupted their moment. "Are you ready to order?"
Jane broke the eye contact first and smiled tightly at the waitress before placing an order for a cappuccino. Maura quickly followed by ordering a chai latte, dismissing the waitress with a genuine smile.
"You don't strike me as a chai latte kind of girl," Jane cringed internally at her attempt to flirt.
"I had an espresso earlier this morning, but I am a chai latte kind of girl," Maura said. "What kind of girl do I strike you as?" she asked with a twinkle in her eyes.
"I'll let you know when I've figured it out, but the espresso makes sense," Jane answered with a wink.
"I guess it does," Maura found herself blushing at Jane's wink.
"So, you're from Boston but you've been just about everywhere, you're a writer, love fashion and human-interest stories. What else can you tell me about Maura Isles?" Jane asked.
"I like that you remember all of that," Maura said blushing again.
"I like listening to you," Jane said, thanking the waitress when she brought their drinks.
"I also like that you're able to make me blush," Maura replied boldly.
"Me too," Jane said tilting her head. "So…?"
"I studied journalism at Harvard, graduated a few years ago. I went to Ethiopia straight after to write about the work Médecins Sans Frontières does there. I've been back in the states for about three years now," Maura started with the most basic thing she could think of.
"Wow, that sounds amazing. I may or may not have Googled your name and read some of your pieces. You're an amazing writer," Jane said.
"Thank you. It's what I've always wanted to do," Maura smiled. "What about you?"
"What about me?" Jane asked, content to just drink in information about the beautiful woman in front of her.
"Have you always wanted to be a bartender?" Maura asked bluntly.
"What if I did?" Jane asked raising an eyebrow.
"There's nothing wrong with that, I just sense that that's not where you want to be," Maura said hoping that her observations didn't scare Jane off.
"You're very observant," Jane remarked.
"You don't have to tell me if you don't want to," Maura said quickly, sensing that Jane might close off again like the night at the bar.
"No, it's okay. I, uh, I used to be a cop," Jane said lowering her head.
"That was the last thing I expected you to say," Maura said. It really was.
"Yeah, well…" Jane trailed off, now seemingly lost in thought.
"I'm sorry, Jane," Maura reached out to place her hand on top of the brunette's on the table. "We don't have to talk about it."
Jane raised her eyes to the table where Maura's hand was placed on top of hers and moved it so that their palms were touching. She gently traced a finger over Maura's wrist, down to her palm unknowingly sending shivers down Maura's spine.
"It's okay," she repeated. Her eyes following her fingers that was still gently touching Maura's hand. "It's okay," she said again when she finally looked at Maura's face again.
Maura was now also staring at the motion of Jane's hand on top of hers. The moment was oddly arousing, she thought before looking up and finding the brunette staring at her intently.
"What happened?" she asked softly, not wanting Jane to stop what she was doing but also genuinely wanting to know what happened.
"Two years ago I made detective," Jane said with a ghost of a smile on her face, her gaze dropping back down to Maura's hand. "We caught a difficult case, a serial killer. I had a run in with him and was injured. The injury effectively killed my career," Jane said everything so fast, Maura had to blink to catch everything.
"Oh Jane. I'm so sorry," Maura said, grasping the hand on top of hers and linking their fingers. She knew there must have been more to the story but didn't want to push for more information.
"It's okay, really," Jane said looking up at Maura. "I've made peace with it."
"Thank you for telling me," was all Maura could think to say.
"Thank you for listening," Jane smiled again. "I've known Vince, the owner of the Robber, for years now so he gave me a job once I was back on my feet after that. I'm pretty content there."
"That's good to know," Maura said enjoying the fact that Jane had not unlinked their hands.
"Anyway, let's get back to you," Jane swiftly changed the subject. "What are you currently working on?" she asked gesturing to the laptop on the side of the table.
"I'm trying to write a book," Maura decided to answer honestly.
"Oh wow, that's big. What about?"
"While I was in Ethiopia, I saw a lot more than what I was able to write in just a few articles. We moved to different camps frequently and I also got a chance to go to other countries on the African continent. From my time there, I spoke to a lot of the locals who had some interesting stories to tell. So, I'm hoping to expand on it by writing a book. But right now, it's just a few chapters," Maura explained.
Jane smiled at the excitement on Maura's face and in her voice while she was explaining what she was hoping to do with her book. "I'm looking forward to reading the book when you're done," she said genuinely.
"You'll be the first to know when it's finished," Maura smiled.
A comfortable silence fell between the two women after Maura spoke, both enjoying just sitting there holding hands. Jane broke the silence with a small chuckle.
"What?" Maura asked, smiling when she saw Jane's dimples.
"I've never done this before," Jane answered by gesturing to their linked hands.
"You've never held hands with anyone before?" Maura asked.
"No, I have. Just never with someone that I've known for less than three days," Jane replied.
"I feel very comfortable with you," was all Maura could think to say.
"Me too."
AN – I have a rough map of where this story is going. So you'll find out more about Jane's injury soon and more about the ladies as we go forward. I hope you hang in there.
