Week 2: Hunger May 13: the heart wants what it wants/power | prompts by KakaSaku-Haven on tumblr
It was the day of the press conference announcing the creation of the Chief Medical Officer of Konoha position and the name of the Hokage's appointee. The appointee would be part of the Hokage's cabinet and a permanent fixture in both the hospital and administration building. The CMO would help craft public health policy and ensure the best care, both physical and mental, for active and retired shinobi.
There was an embarrassingly long list of reasons to install this position; hell, it was criminal the position didn't already exist. Kakashi certainly spoke passionately and at length about all the valid, critical reasons for the necessity of the position. But as persuasive and convincing as he was to almost anyone, he couldn't fool himself. He was a genius after all. He knew what his driving reason was, and he knew better than to acknowledge it, even in his own mind. The heart wants what it wants, after all. And he was finally in a position to secure it.
The dais looked out over an impressive showing of the village's population. Kakashi took it as an auspicious start for the new position. Adjusting his pointy hat, Kakashi approached the lectern to kick the show off.
"We are gathered here this afternoon to announce and celebrate the appointment of Konoha's inaugural Chief Medical Officer. It is my absolute pleasure and honor to introduce to you the brightest medical mind of her generation and your new Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Haruno Sakura." Kakashi stepped to the side of the podium and turned to look at Sakura sitting behind him. Offering her a hand, Kakashi helped her rise to her feet. Standing, Sakura one-handedly straightened her skirt and went to pull away from Kakashi when she felt his squeeze her hand. Turning her eyes up to his, Sakura was surprised at the intensity of his gaze. She felt captivated, ensnared; her awaiting crowd dropped completely from her mind as she watched Kakashi tilt his head down towards her face and felt him pull her closer by the hand he refused to release.
"My warmest congratulations, Sakura; I've never been prouder." Sakura flushed at his sincere praise. When she felt his masked lips graze against her cheek, she stopped breathing. With one last squeeze of her hand, Kakashi released Sakura and gently pushed her toward the podium. She squeaked out an embarrassed thanks as she was quite certain she would have remained standing there in a flustered daze for who knew how long otherwise. She gave herself a mental shake and firmly told herself that she'd just have to reckon with her ex-sensei-turned-boss's newly acquired skill to render her flustered and flushed after she gave the kickass speech she'd been working on for the better part of a month. Throwing Kakashi a quick considering glance and shy smile, she turned back to the people of Konoha. Kakashi looked on as Sakura began to address the crowd. He was pleased with his position: he would always have her back and would be happy to follow her lead. Konoha was in good hands with Sakura, and he had the hopeful feeling that he might be as well.
