They were back on a case, and with Kevin taking some time off Voight had paired her and Adam up together. They'd started having some of their camaraderie back, making stupid jokes. He'd even gotten her coffee a couple of times and she'd returned the favour.

They were standing outside a warehouse waiting for the ok to move in. They were stretched thin with the five of them, and Voight was taking the lead this time on one entrance. She and Adam had the rear and went as soon as the order was given.

Their intel was wrong, and bullets began whizzing past her head. Kim dove down, pulling Adam behind a crate with her and grabbing her radio. "50-21 Eddie, 10-1, 10-1. Officers under heavy fire at our location, five plain clothes officers on site. Requesting immediate backup from all available units." She heard the responses to her request, and grabbed her spare gun from her ankle holster.

"You ready for this, Burgess? I'll cover you, you move." She looked down at Adam who had his cocky smirk to hide his worry on his face, and held back her desire to kiss it off him. Instead she nodded, and waited for him to pop up with his own weapons.

She ran once he covered her, making it about ten yards further into the warehouse. She spotted two shooters coming towards her, hitting them both in the legs to stop them from getting near her. The sounds of gunfire were getting quieter from around her, but she stayed in her position until she heard Hailey call out.

"Clear over here, I've two shooters down and we need two ambos for them," she replied, crouching up.

"Clear over—" Adam was cut off with a pop of gunfire, and she immediately ran to him. The shooter tried to hide but Kim's training took over and she took aim and fired, the shot hitting true as he dropped to the floor immediately.

Once she made it to Adam she checked his ribs, spotting the bullet in his vest. It had nearly broken through, and she shuddered viewing it before pulling off the emergency pathway. The bruise from the force was already visible to her, red and ugly.

"I'm fine, Kim. It got the vest." Adam tried sitting up but she didn't let him, making him lie there till she was satisfied none of his ribs were obviously broken. The rest of the team had arrived and helped him up, but Kim was just shellshocked, staring at the hole in his vest.

"Burgess, you ok?" Voight asked, and she whirled around.

"Yeah, just in shock. I haven't fired a gun like that in a long time." Her words rushed out of her mouth, and her Sergeant just watched her.

"It was a good shoot, you don't need to worry about that. He'd shot an officer, and was going to shoot the rest of us if you didn't get him. IRT won't have a problem." The rest of the team nodded, and Hailey put an arm around her. They walked out to leave Forensics to deal with the scene. Once they were outside Brett grabbed Adam, checking him out before giving him a conditional all clear.

"I want him to come with us, but he's refusing. I won't officially sign him as AMA, but if he starts looking like he's in pain force him to come in, ok?" Kim nodded, handing Adam back his flannel to cover up.

By the time they got back to the precinct, each member of their team was quiet and contemplative. The close call had scared them, and from where the bruise was on Adam she knew he would have bled out in that warehouse. It was in the centre of his chest, and would have hit his aorta. He'd be dead in minutes, and she'd have watched him bleed out.

By the time their shift was over it was agreed they'd all go to Molly's. Makayla was on a Girl Scouts camping trip, so Kim didn't need to worry about what time to be home for, or not drinking too much. She got a ride there with Hailey, and the four grabbed a table to sit and chat.

Everyone except Adam was tipsy by closing, and Hailey and Jay left to go back to their apartment. It left Kim sitting opposite Adam, the two starting to speak and then stopping.

"Want a ride home? I know Hailey drove you in."

"Yeah, that sounds good, thanks." Kim paid her tab and they left, a light drizzle in the air. She turned around in the rain, watching how it made Adam's hair fall out of place from the nearly perfect quiff he kept it in. The light shone onto his face and he looked like an angel to her in the streetlights. Before they made it to the car he stopped, and pulled her aside.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry for saying we should just be coworkers. You're my friend, Kim, and you're a good friend. And I nearly died today and if you thought I don't care about you and I was gone I'd hate my—" Kim cut him off by standing on her tip toes, pressing a kiss to his lips. She felt his arms wrap around her and pull her closer, holding the two of them together. The rain poured down their faces as his tongue made it into her mouth, but neither paid attention to it, too focused on the other.

They separated for breath, Adam leaning his forehead against Kim's. She looked up into his eyes and whispered "Take me home, Adam. I know we've so much to talk about, to work through, but just take me home." He kissed her again, firmly, and grabbed her hand as they went to his jeep, hair soaked through.

They were driving through the quiet streets when Kim decided to speak up and admit exactly how she felt. "Adam…I want us to work. I want to put in whatever effort we need for us to work. Because I have never been with anyone who has treated me with such kindness and been so selfless for so many people. The way you do anything, walk, talk, say my name, all of it. I don't want you to change from the man you've become, so I need to change to be who you need. And I want to do that for us."

He grabbed her hand, and held it the entire drive back to his apartment. Kim almost shuddered at the memories of the last time she'd stood in this hallway, but this time they were together and he was there. They made it in the door and closed it before Adam's mouth was back on hers, and he lifted her up to hold her against the door. She always felt so dainty with him, held tight against his chest. His phone buzzed against her thigh, and she let go of his lips so he could check it.

He pulled it out and saw the name, throwing the phone onto the couch. She felt his lips latch onto that spot on her neck that made her groan, and she threw her head back to give him access. But she saw his phone buzz again, and this time her eyes focused on it. The name "Emma 💙" was on the screen, a picture of a blonde on it. Kim's heart sank as she remembered the pizza from the week before. He was seeing someone. She was the other woman. Oh God.

She pushed against his shoulders and he moved back, letting her stand on her own feet. Kim rebuttoned her jeans as Adam looked at her confusedly.

"Kim? What did I do, what's wrong? Are you ok? Did we move too fast? Talk to me, Darlin'." His use of her nickname was too much for her, and she felt the tears come to her eyes. She'd been so close to getting everything she wanted, but not now. Probably not ever.

"I forgot you were seeing someone. She's calling you, Adam. I can't be the other woman. You ended one relationship for me before, I can't make you end another." She turned and unlocked the door, walking straight out. Adam called her name, but she ignored him, getting the uber app up to get home.

Kim managed to keep her tears to herself until she arrived home and spotted the stupid stout stain on her rug, but that broke her, making her sit on the couch and cry until the dawn hit.
