Rufus sighed while getting out of his car , door held by the valet,he said thank you to the guy and entered Columbia University's gigantic hall full of alumnus ,ex students and current batches.
He checked in his coat and took a flute of champagne from a nearby by caterer.
Nate with some date were in attendance and by far he could tell Serena was here too. Maybe Dan was around here.
He started his way towards Serena to greet her and ask where Dan was when Lily made her appearance and hugged Serena and they started to chat.
He was almost there but he got dragged by the event manager to tell his time about the speech.
He was the only alumni honored tonight,only him coz how fast he became what he is now literally. From Lily's-one-of-the-husbands to THE Art Dealer Philanthropist Rufus Humphrey.
The guy told him he will be needed backstage in 20 minutes. Rufus nodded his head and then went to greet his in-laws.
He took a gulped all of his remaining champagne in one sip and kept it on the passerby caterer's tray.
He made his way and Serena spotted him first right away.
"Oh my God! Rufus is here! Long time no see!" Hearing Serena,Lily turns around and smiles at him. His hazel meets green as Lily shivers a bit. He still has the effect on her after all these years. He smiles in return and kisses Serena's cheek.
Rufus chuckled along and replied "Well,you know the Galleries keep me busy. As you maybe have heard."
Lily smiles tight and peaks in "Or the latest Maxim Calendar!"
"Mom!"
"It's alright Serena ,I expect nothing but honesty, from your mother and not that I try to hide it"
Serena smiles at Rufus and then gives her mother a look saying 'be nice!'
"Well if you two can excuse me I have to go find Dan." With that Serena takes off not being able to bear the tension between her mom and her never ever been legally husband.
Rufus starts for small talk," How you been, seriously?" giving her a serious look of concern.
"I've been good,great actually" Lily answers while fidgeting with her bracelet. He still makes her nervous.
"Well, uhm that's great you know,and well how's William ,he treating you right ?"
"Well we broke up. He wanted marriage all the way,kinda creepy and I didn't" She quickly rambles and takes a sip of her flute,which is not strong enough to get through this conversation with her ex, she needs something more stronger maybe scotch or a Martini.
She glances around. Oh! There's the bar!
Rufus then perks up "Well honestly I'm relieved,I even don't know why you ever went back to him after what he has done to you. And he is the reason our marriage fell apart."
She sighs and fidget fixing her hair and then looks at him "He wasn't... that..bad."
"At least I didn't slept with your sister and had a child with her!"
"He didn't know about Lola till we did!"
"OR gave you fake cancer!"
"Rufus! Enough!" She said her in her 'Rufus' tone.
"Or cheated on you or abandoned you!"
Now Lily had it enough.
"Oh Yeah? Sleeping with Ivy Dickens? Ring a bell? And when my mother had just died,helping the enemy! Remember something! "
"I slept with her only after you wanted to do nothing with me! And as for helping it was one mistake! One but you couldn't swallow it! Like I did thousands of times even from the pettiest to the life treating things like cancer! So clearly you are not the one allowed to judge!"
She scoffs and chuckles at that and sees the crowd around them nervously.
Now people had started looking at them and murmuring.
Lily rubbed her temple and Rufus took a breath and grabbed her hand and took her in the lobby into the coat room.
Lily tried to free her hand but he was stronger than she remembered.
Huh so he was working out ,he did look annoying hot and wait no let's not go there you're angry and not gonna let him get his and his cheeky ass,oh yeah his ass ,Oh god Lily focus! Focus!
He finally let her go and trapped her between him and the wall.
He angrily spat at her,"Go ahead say it! Say all the anguish or hate you have inside coz I'm tired of it Lil! So tired ! Can't able to talk to you without this--this tension between us! JUST DO IT! Rip me to shreds so I can finally get over you and we can move and we get this off our chests!"
Lily was scared she saw him angry but this much never. But she had to get it off her chest too!
"Yes of course ,you manwhore,sleeping around with women you half or your daughter's age and for what? You're destroying yourself and for what just some skin. And as for our past what happened, happened Rufus we were doomed from the beginning we were! We tried it out and didn't work! That was that!"
Now he was hurt and calming down "Oh yeah! That was that right,then why give William a second chance and not me,coz he was father of your children ,greatest LOVE of your life or richer than me?" He scoffs at the end.
Now she loses it and slaps him.
Hard
And practically screams her answer which had been haunting her, the real truth for 6 years now.
"BECAUSE I LOVED YOU,YOU ASSHOLE! I GAVE MY HEART AND TRUSTED TO YOU WITH IT! I DIDN'T GAVE IT TO BART BASS OR SOME WILLIAM VAN DER WOODSEN ! YOU! I GAVE IT TO YOU AND YOU BROKE IT IN PIECES AND HANDED ME BACK! SO I DID WHAT I DO THE BEST I LEFT YOU BEFORE YOU COULD AND WENT THE MEN WHO I DIDN'T GIVE MY HEART TO!"
Rufus now was silenced after listening to her, his heart swelled for her and watched her with lust or maybe love.
Lily's throat was now starting to pain from all that screaming ,but the truth was finally out and she felt...relieved.
"I really all by my heart loved you Rufus ,all,but you just ripped it. All of it." Lily spoke with some tears in her eyes softly and was in low voice.
He was now vulnerable ,they both were.
"Then why didn't you fight for me, for us? Gave me another chance or forgiven me like I had for your long list of laundry from hiding our son for 20 years to, lying about the men you dated or the secrets you kept? Why?" He spoke quietly. Himself with some tears. Both licking their wounds in an unusual Rufus and Lily way.
She replied lowly too.
"Because I was scared you were gonna leave me and turn your back on me .Leave me before I did ,leaving me so in love with you,breaking me in a way only you were capable of. So I left you before you could."
"You're scared coz you're in love with me like you never were with any of your husbands and unlike a Bart Bass someone like me can break your heart,and that's terrifying, and I know that because right now you're breaking mine."
His words still ringing in her ears after all these years.
"Lily... you should have known I wouldn't have let you go without a fight " Rufus brushed a strand of her hair behind her ear and looked at her with all his love and lust .She looked back with the same look.
He leaned in closer and closer teasing her a bit and in the end she just sighed and closed the gap.
They kissed passionately. Their tongues met together and the battle for dominance began. Tongues exploring each other's mouths,meeting in between tip against tip but then Rufus catches her tongue with his teeth,as a prisoner and then releases it and the duel starts again. Her hands touching his chest then tracing the his abs by tearing his suit jacket up and unbuttoning some of the top of shirt, then back to his neck and behind his neck playing with his small curls there,replaying the movement.
His hands roaming on her both cheeks wiping the tears,then cupping one of her breast and squeezing it gaining him a moan and the other hand going to her left leg hooking it around his waist and making her feel her effect on him which earns him a long moan once more. They kiss more deeply for a minute,shoveling their tongues deep down each other's throat but then stops and Lily is the one who breaks it.
They take deep breaths and look at each other with their swollen lips wanting nothing more then having sex right now and there but anyone could find them there and they so not want that kinda tabloid or Page Six unwanted attention when their kids are still very MARRIED and just in the other room.
They finally settle their breaths. Rufus speaks up first.
"Is there a possibility that after all we have gone through and after all these years you still love me or is this just the tension coz this" He points towards between their bodies " was never our problem."
Lily looks at him with adoration,stroking his hair at his nape and smiles coyly,"Maybe."
Rufus gives her a look,"I'm serious"
Lily sighs and shakes her head ,"I don't know that --"
"The answer is not 'I don't know' "
He steps back and buttons up his shirt and jacket and turns to leave but now she grabs him and pulls him to her closer.
She looks in the eyes "The question is,are you ready to try?"
He nods "I am,if you are,I never wanted us to split up. It was totally your decision"
"You could have stopped me "
"I did, remember I asked 'You sure about this?' and you said 'I only get to keep one marriage and this isn't the one I want' something like that ."
She caressed his cheek and he leaned into it.
"You're right "
"Of course I am . I am--"
"Don't.Say.It"
"Rufus Humphrey,you know, now it a trademark"
"Well Rosewood is about me, so its mine"
"It was about Alison. Remember?"
They both laughed and Rufus started to kiss her again as his phone rang.
They broke the kiss and he answered it.
"Yeah I'll be there,yes I--"
Lily while he answered the call started to kiss her way up to his earlobe, licked and bit it and he moaned.
"Oh no, of course not,I'm actually coming in 2."
He got off the phone and teasingly backed her against the wall. "Now what do you think you're doing?"
Lily puts on an innocent look replying "Nothing"
He smiled and pecked her lips again and said sighing "As much I want to, I have to go to give the alumni speech."
She glared at him "You're the surprise alumni guest?!"
"Yes well I did do my Bachelor's and Master's in Art and Business from here if you must know"
"I know"
He chuckles "Yes Dan told me you keep tabs on me."
She smiles and wraps her arm around his back,cupping the back of his head in a way that's never old "Only to know you're alive and not killed by some model's psycho's boyfriend"
He raises his eyebrow and asks playing along her "Only for that ?"
"Yup"
She gives in and smiles and kisses him hungrily again pulling him close to get more of his body contact.
He tries to back away,breaking the kiss but she doesn't let him and keeps pulling him in and he can't resist.
"Lil"

"I have to go now or they are going to find us!"
She finally back away but not without stealing a peck he happily returns.
She lets him go and tells him "I'm waiting for you Rufus and fighting for us,6 months ,6 years I'll still be here"
He smiles at the familiar line and goes out the door to backstage.
She makes herself presentable and thank god she wore lip gloss and gets out with a dreamy smile on her face and finds Dan and Serena and chats with them for a bit.
"Ladies and Gentlemen ,We proudly call upon our stage one of our most successful student and alumni Rufus Humphrey to share a few words upon his achievements and aspiration on success to all of you."
Rufus walks from behind and shakes his hand with Dr. Harts and goes on with his speech
"Only few years ago I was here ,studying art and business like all you students at 45 to say" The audience laughs and Lily smiles and he finds her in the crowd and smiles back.
"I was just like you hungry to show the world What I am ,prove them wrong about my predictions and be the best in all. That hunger did brought me here but also --" He smiles more brightly at Lily "-- inspiration from my muse,who always have and will be my inspiration. Keep me on track and sometimes push me on it. All I want to say is find your muse and follow it to the end and I'm sure you'll get it. Don't chase success, make success chase you. Thank you .
That last statement earns him a lot of claps and leaves every one admiring him.
He gets off the stage and talks to some of the students and professors waiting for him. Lily's eyes follow him and she is very impressed by this side of his.
He walks towards them and Dan and Serena congratulate him and move on to see other guests .
Lily finally speaks and raises her eyebrow, "That was impressing,by the way who's your muse, and why haven't you told me about her."
He smiles his boyish grin and answers by whispering in her ear "You,always have, always will"
With that he takes her hand and turns to leave. She follows him .
He tells the car to brought around .
"So I'm your muse to all this big business turnover."
"Yup"
"So we are gonna try?"
He sighs and tells "I'm not ready and Dan and Serena are still married! "
"They didn't tell you?"
"Tell me what?"
"Its their secret to tell"
"Well Lil as much I would love to be with you I can't coz I can't get my heart crushed again"
She looks him in the eyes and pleads "Rufus it will not be, I still lo--"
"Don't,Just don't. I promised myself I will not be crushed again by Lily Rhodes and I stand by it. Like you said we're doomed from the start."
She frowns "Then all this --?"
"Was a test and we failed ,we have tried twice Lil,what will be different this time."
She gets annoyed and angry getting played by him "If its a test then lets see how you handle us at our anniversary on a cruise in Europe!"
"Wait! You're --"
"Yes if you must know I'm going to represent Bass as Chuck's busy with Blair's last trimester .Like I said I'm fighting for it and always will, till get it. I'm sure you know t coz you know me so well."
With that she gets in the town car comes and she gets in the car leaving Rufus alone on the driveway thinking he has done a big mistake by this. A war he would lose. Why the hell did he decline what he wanted, he knew it was bound to happen but he is waiting to see what she has up her sleeve and if she truly wants him for the long haul this time . He wants to see how she does when roles are reversed for a change .Her fighting for him. And is damn excited but scared to hell too.
Rufus goes back inside to find Dan and Serena,when he actually sees was a typical high school brawl between his son and Nate Archibald,more like a fist fight.
Dan was on Nate mounting punches on his face quite roughly. People were staring,talking and some recording it. Huh,like he cared and will handle after, but cared for his son, who if didn't stop would get an assault charge. So he ran and helped to separate Dan from Nate.
"Dan! God! Stop! He is your friend!"
Dan answered "A friend doesn't sleeps with friend's wife or makes her be with him!" With that he punches Nate again.
Rufus gets confused "Dan! What the hell are you talking about?! Let him go!" Rufus gets in between them and pulls Dan off Nate.
Some guys come to help Rufus. They successfully separate them and the caterer gets some ice for Nate and Dan.
Dan is quite unstable but and tries to wrangle from the guys holding him to charge at Nate.
Rufus spots Serena in the crowd crying. He goes to her.
"Is it true?" He asks softly
"Yes, its my fault they're fighting Rufus." She says with more tears her voice breaking.
"Serena, I didn't thought you were like this." Serena looks at him and flees towards the driveway to call for her car.
Rufus stands his hands on his waist,frustrated watching two pairs of guys holding Dan and Nate. These Rhodes girls take a toll on the Humphreys.
Dan bursts out first, "You stay the hell away from my wife or I'll fucking kill you!"
Nate as much shouldn't he replies "She came onto me. How can you be her husband if she sleeps and fulfils herself with me with me. Thrice dude!"
They both try to charge again at each other but Rufus gets in between.
"That's enough! Both of you!Stop now!" He faces both of them and the security escorts both of them out forcing them into their cars
He himself calls and fires up his PR department to do damage control and they arrive and check away everyone's phone to make sure its not on record. It was gonna be a looong night.
Even William Vanderbilt with Tripp shows up and then tells everyone to calm down and tell its a misunderstanding.
He comes and talks to Rufus .
"So, Rufus, may I know what my grandson now did to cause this?"
Rufus sighs and tells him all about the scenario and the affair.
William nods and then looks seriously "We need to make sure it doesn't get out or it will be dirty for both Nate and Dan especially Serena."
Rufus nods and tells him that his PR is doing the best.
William nods and shakes Rufus' hand and says "I'll make sure this doesn't see light of the day but its too much we need more help."
William leaves with Tripp following him.
Rufus scoffs ,Nate is a good boy, and he knows how these Rhodes women can be.
He gets outside and tells the valet to bring his car.
He makes a call while waiting.
His car comes and he gets inside and the receiver picks up.
"This is Rufus. Something serious has come up . Gather everyone except Dan,Serena and Nate and tell them to come to Lily's .It's very important or I wouldn't have called. We need to kill a scandal before it gets out and don't tell the three"
The receiver replies "Got it. Consider it done"
Dramatic enough ?

I always thought Rufus would get tired but if they would have gotten together in future it would be by Lily fighting this time for finale.
I am wrong to see that ?
Well now I have my tennis practice bye
I know they didn't got together but when they will you'll see why I didn't do it now
mostly coz Rufus is scared
