Toothcup

Two hours later after dragon training saw Hiccup walking towards the cove, fish and shield in hand. He couldn't stop thinking about what Astrid had said, about choosing a side. The phrase ran through his head again and again, and each time he couldn't give himself a straight answer.

"I...I don't know what side I'm on." Hiccup muttered to himself. "All I know is that this war has gone long enough and that dragons aren't as monstrous as everyone makes them out to be. That Night Fury didn't kill me after I freed it from my bola... The Gronckle only sniffed me after it cornered me against the wall. It didn't shoot until Gobber hooked it's mouth. The Nadder only attacked the twins out of annoyance. Fuck, what am I saying?! If my father was here he'd lock me up in our house, post guards around the front and back door, by my bedroom window..." Distracted in his thoughts as he was, he didn't realize he had arrived at his destination until the shield he was carrying got stuck between two of the rocks. He attempted to pull it out, only for it to hold tight. Groaning, he ducked under it and tried again from the other side. When it still refused to yield, he sighed, turning to face the cove proper and making a mental note to try and get it out again later.

Holding the fish close to his chest, he slowly walked farther in, eyes flicking from place to place to try and spot the Night Fury. Unbeknownst to him, the Night Fury was hiding atop a pile of rocks, having heard and smelled the small boy approaching. He shuffled in place a bit, creating enough noise to attract his attention. Hiccup, now aware of the dragon's position, stops and freezes as the dragon climbs down, circling around him a bit before stopping and lowering to the ground, growling slightly. Moving in such a way as to not warrant a threat, Hiccup holds the fish out, offering it to the dragon. He flinches when the dragon growls again, louder, and follows it's gaze to his belt. More specifically, his knife. Not breaking eye contact, he holds the fish in one hand and uses the other to slowly pull the knife out and drop it off to the side. When the dragon finds this unsatisfactory, he uses his boot to kick the knife into the pond. He holds his breath as the dragon flicks it's eyes between the pond and him, relaxing as the dragon does.

He once more holds out the fish, and this time the dragon approaches much less hesitantly. Though Hiccup can't help but notice a certain detail about the dragon. "Huh. Toothless. I could've sworn you had-" Before Hiccup could finish his thought, the Night Fury's teeth suddenly shot out of his gums and snatched the fish, chomping it in half and swallowing both pieces at once. "...Teeth." Then the dragon's focus returned to him, and he quickly backed up as the dragon investigated him further. As usual, his clumsiness hit and he tripped, falling back and getting himself cornered against a rock. "No, no, I don't have any more." For a moment, nothing happened, then a strange hacking sound came from the dragon before the tail end of the fish. He looked at the dragon questioningly, wondering why he now had to hold half of a slimy regurgitated fish. When the dragon looked from him, to the fish and back, he realized what the dragon wanted. "You want me to eat it?" When the dragon nodded, he groaned, though he didn't realize that the dragon wanted to feed him since he looked far too small and skinny. (Because of his premature birth, Hiccup was only 4'9". It is also the source of him being the runt.)

Bringing it to his mouth, he takes a bite, hoping that he wouldn't need to swallow as he offered the fish back. His hopes were dashed, however, when the dragon made a swallowing motion. Groaning again, he held a fist to his mouth as he forced himself to swallow, gagging as the slimy thing went down his throat. After making sure he wouldn't puke, he gave the dragon a shaky smile. Though his look of mild disgust changed to one of wonder as the Night Fury attempted to copy him, the scaly lips twitching around until a toothless smile was being given back. Without thinking much of it, he set the fish aside and got on his knees, reaching a hand out to touch the dragon. Of course, this was overstepping a line, causing the dragon to drop the smile in favor of a growl before launching off to the other side of the cove. Hiccup watched as the dragon burned a patch of ground, heating it up before laying down on it. As the Night Fury looked up to watch a bird fly away, he snuck closer, sitting down next to him and offering a small wave. Unamused, the dragon shifted around some before setting his head down, the one finned tail moving closer and blocking the head from view.

Of course, having no sense of personal space and a curiosity of what scales felt like, Hiccup scooched forwards again, reaching forwards to touch the tail. Just as he was about to make contact, the dragon lifted his tail to give an annoyed glare at the human, who quickly stood and wandered away. Snorting, the Night Fury moved away as well, climbing up a large tree and hanging himself from it with his tail, giving one last look at the human before attempting to sleep again.

When the Night Fury wakes hours later at dusk, he's surprised to find the human still there. Silently, he drops to the ground and sneaks up behind him, observing over the boy's shoulder as lines in the ground come together to form a rather nice image of him. Inspired, and wanting to repay the favor, the dragon looks around before finding a suitable branch to use. Waddling over, he tears it off the tree and begins dragging it around, occasionally looking back at the human for reference to make sure his image was as accurate as possible. He may have hit the boy a few times in the process, but oh well.

Hiccup watches in wonder as the dragon copies him, dragging a branch through the ground in place of a stick. After the Night Fury tosses the branch away and nods in approval, he stands to try and get a better look at the drawing. Though he jumped when the dragon growled at him again, but quickly found the reason was because he had stepped on one of the lines. Testing his theory a few times, he then began to weave between the lines, unknowingly moving closer to the dragon. He is fully aware of this fact however when he feels a breath of air hit his neck. Turning, he finds himself once more face to face with the dragon. Wanting to try again, he raises his hand, only to pause when the dragon growls slightly. Taking a breath, he turns his head away, keeping his hand in the air and letting the dragon choose instead.

A moment later, scales meet skin, and a bond is formed. Gasping, Hiccup turns to look at the dragon again, meeting his eyes before the dragon snorts, jumping away once more. Hiccup stays there for a moment longer, looking at his hand in wonder before wandering out of the cove, leaving the shield behind. What he doesn't realize is the dragon had been able to feel some of his thoughts from their brief moment of contact, having found nothing threatening or malicious, instead learning that the human was confused, saddened from something, and more than all seeking any kind of acceptance he could get. Both look to the sky as they think over the events that took place, wondering what this means for their future.

Toothcup

Later that night, Hiccup was sitting with the other teens and Gobber on a watchtower eating dinner. While they were content to dig into the provided poultry, he had settled with a fish. Though as he watched it cook, he couldn't help but think of the black scaled dragon in the cove. 'Why did that Night Fury have me eat that half of his fish? Was it because that was the only one I had, or was there some other reason?' He wasn't entirely paying attention to what the others were talking about, as he had already heard Gobber's story of how he supposedly lost his limbs, but he decided to tune in anyways to keep from attracting unneeded attention.

"...And with one twist, he took my hand and swallowed it whole. I saw the look on his face: I was delicious. He must have passed the word, because it wasn't a month before another one of them took my leg." Gobber finished, puffing out his chest and dramatically showcasing his false arm and leg. As expected, the other teens were enraptured with the story. Laughing and grinning at each other now that it was over.

"Isn't it weird to think that your hand was inside a dragon? Like if your mind was still in control of it, you could have killed the dragon from the inside by crushing his heart, or something." Fishlegs said. Everyone gave him a look, weirded out by where his thoughts had gone.

"I swear, I'm so angry right now! I'll avenge your beautiful hand and your beautiful foot. I'll chop off the legs of every dragon I fight. With my face!" Snotlout exclaimed, waving his chicken leg around. Hiccup rolled his eyes. 'That makes no sense, but there's my cousin for you.' He thought to himself, far too use to his cousin's stupidity and lack of forward thinking.

"Un-unh. It's the wings and tails you really want. If it can't fly, it can't get away. A downed dragon is a dead dragon." Gobber said, tearing off a chicken leg to emphasize his point. Hiccup stifled a gasp, realizing with growing horror what the missing tailfin meant. Ignoring anything else Gobber or the teens had to say, he slipped away as quickly and quietly as he could. There were two things he had to take care of, the first of which he dealt with as soon as he got to the bottom of the watchtower. Moving to a less used area, he dropped to his knees and vomited, unable to take the forcibly imagined sight of the Night Fury dying a slow and painful death because of his mistake. He stayed there for several minutes, dry heaving once his stomach was empty. After getting his stomach under control, he stood to complete his next task at the forge. It was his fault the Night Fury lost a tailfin, which meant it was only right he did everything in his power to fix it.

Checking to make sure Gobber wasn't around to do some late-night smithing, he pulled his long hair up into a high bun to keep it from getting burned (A lesson hard learned) before getting to work, lighting the forge up and gathering all the materials he was going to need. It took several hours of dedication, but he soon had a fully functional tailfin made and ready for testing. Of course, the actual testing would have to wait until he went to see the dragon again, but he was happy he was at least making progress towards repaying his debt. Putting his creation in a container, he did his best to hide it as he snuck through the village, successfully making it back to his house without being spotted. Slipping inside the quiet place, he set to cleaning himself up as much as he could and washing the foul taste of vomit from his mouth before trudging up to bed, instantly falling asleep with dreams of black scales and blowing wind filling his night.

Toothcup

The next morning as Hiccup groggily got himself out of the bed, he found the clothes between his legs to be wet. Looking at the bed, he realized why. He was once more on his period. "Great! It's that time of month. I wish I was just a normal viking boy!" Hiccup muttered to himself as he set to changing his clothes, using the already ruined cloth to clean up the rest of the blood. Looking through his wardrobe, he decided to wear another one of his mother's tunics, this time with black leggings that he hoped would hide the blood seeping out of his private parts. Making himself breakfast, he grabbed the tailfin before heading down to the docks, grabbing a basket of fish from the recently returned fishermen. Both items thrown over his shoulders, he made his way into the forest, headed for the cove to start fixing his mistake.

He entered the grotto with much less hesitation this time, though he was once more reminded of the shield he had to get out. Sliding himself and his packages under it, he found the dragon already approaching, this time with much less hesitation as well. "Hey, Toothless. I brought breakfast. I hope- I hope you're hungry." With a grunt, he set the fish basket on the ground, not noticing the mild glare the dragon sent him. 'My name isn't "Toothless", it's Fannar. Toothless, what a ridiculous name, really. Hardly a name fit for one such as myself, but I suppose you can call me that since I can't tell you my real name.' The now named Night Fury grumbled to himself, but continued approaching the first decent meal he was going to get after getting stuck in this place. "Okay, that's disgusting. Uh...we've got some salmon, some nice Norweigian cod, and a whole smoked eel." Fannar, who had been sniffing at the fish, froze, backing away with a rising growl. Hiccup watched in confusion, reaching down and pulling out the aforementioned eel. He panicked when the dragon started screeching, using his other hand to try and calm him. "No, no, it's okay!" He tossed the eel away towards the exit before rubbing his hand off on his tunic. "Yeah, I don't like eel much either. Sorry."

The dragon snorted, glaring at the spot the eel landed at before sniffing at the fish again, eagerly digging in now that the horrible monstrosity was gone. Hiccup sat and watched, surprised at how quickly the dragon was gulping down the meal he brought. He slid the fin out from the container, holding it up when the dragon finished and gave it a questioning look. "So, uh, I noticed that you couldn't get out because you're missing a tailfin, so I thought that since it's my fault you lost it in the first place, the least I could do to make up for it is make you a new one." He pulled open the fin, showing the now shocked dragon his project. Hiccup grew slightly nervous when the Night Fury did nothing but stare, shifting in place. "May I, uh, may I put it on you?" Snapping out of it, the dragon looked at him, and he couldn't help but once more see just how much intelligence was behind those eyes. Slowly, the dragon nodded, turning around to give the boy access to his tail. Moving gently, he straddled the tail and got to work, not paying attention to how the dragon seemed to adjust before drooping.

"There we go. It works, could be-" Hiccup shouted as the tail he was resting on was suddenly pulled back, gripping it on instinct as the ground suddenly got much farther away. "Ah, no, no no, oh Thor!" But then the ground got closer, and he noticed that the fin was being kept shut due to the wind. Reaching out with a hand, he gripped it and pulled, catching the wind as they shot back into the air again. He couldn't help but cheer. "Oh my, it's working! Yes, yes I did it!" The dragon, questioning how the humans voice was still so loud, looked back and saw him clinging to his tail. Both annoyed and worried, he dove towards the water before performing a jackknife, throwing the human off his tail and into the water. But when he started losing altitude again, he looked and saw the fin wasn't being held open anymore before crashing into the water as well. He surfaces just in time to watch the human jump out of the water, cheering. "Yeah!"

Both climbed out of the pond, the dragon sending an apologetic look to Hiccup for throwing him off. The boy just chuckled, smiling. "It's okay, I know you weren't trying to hurt me. But I'll have to work on finding a way to keep the fin open without me riding on your tail." As he started coming up with plans, he looked up and noticed the time. "Shit, I'm going to be late. I'll come back later so we can keep working on the fin. I should have some ideas for it by then. Bye!" Hiccup waved as he left the cove, barely remembering to grab the basket and eel on his way.

Toothcup

Hiccup just barely managed to get to the arena on time, having had to go back to his house to once again change his clothes and fix his hair. He was still a bit damp, as he rushed through properly drying himself off, but it wasn't really noticeable except for an extra bit of sheen to his hair and skin. As he attempted to slip into the stands again, Gobber caught sight of him and pulled him aside after sending the other teens into the ring. "So, Hiccup, where were you this morning? I couldn't find you anywhere." Gobber said. Hiccup gulped. "Oh, you know, I was just out in the woods looking for some herbs Gothi wanted."

"Oh really? Did that have anything to do with the basket of fish you got from the fisherman?" Gobber narrowed his eyes, suspicious. "Uh, yes, actually. Gothi was running low on fish too so she asked me to get some more for her." Hiccup forced himself to stay still until Gobber nodded. The man likely knew he was lying, but Hiccup was grateful that nothing more was being said about it. He let out a sigh of relief when he sat down, tired from having walked and ran through the forest twice. When Gobber started talking, he focused his attention on the events inside the arena.

"Today is about teamwork. Now, a wet dragon head can't light it's fire. The Hideous Zippleback is extra tricky. One head breathes gas, the other head lights it. Your job is to know which is which. Since there aren't enough of you for even teams, we'll split you up by gender." Gobber backed off as he opened the gate, a large cloud of green gas billowing out into the arena. It quickly covered the teens from sight, preventing any of them from seeing the dragon. Hiccup moved closer to the chain roof, attempting to peer through the gas to watch what would happen. He would occasionally see a large silhouette, likely the Zippleback, slide by the outskirts of the gas cloud, but otherwise not much could be seen.

As expected, the others started bickering about something, which then got all of them to start arguing, which distracted them from watching their backs and in turn let the dragon knock them out in one fell swoop. When the gas cleared, it was to see all the teens getting up off the ground, the two girls and Tuffnut drenched in water with the other buckets strewn about, their contents slowly drying on the ground. Gobber quickly set to reprimanding them for failing the lesson, but Hiccup wasn't paying attention. He was looking at the still open cage and the shadow of the dragon within. It had every chance to hurt or kill the teens with nothing to stop it. So why didn't it?

Author's note two: As for the Icelandic/Norwegian Cod, if you followed me on Tumblr, I tried to work which part of Scandinavia where HTTYD (the film not the book) is based and I seemed to find that the Faroe Islands is the best place (there are more theories on Tumblr on the locations). And for now I will be calling Toothless as Fannar.
