"Hi Jay."
Jay was stumped. When he called Erin the night before he was desperate to speak to her but never thought she would just show up. Also, at the time he didn't realize he was married to Hailey. He suddenly remembered Hailey was also in the room.
"Well, I'm going to head out and let you guys talk. I'll see you later." She said to Jay . "Erin is very nice seeing you again."
"Nice to see you too Hailey. You don't have to go I got Jay's voicemail yesterday and I tried calling back but got no answer, so I spoke to Hank and he told me what happened. I thought it would be better to speak face to face."
Hailey thought she had shown up because Voight had called her, but it was Jay. It was too much, and she felt like she was suffocating, she had to get out of here or she would just scream. "No, it's okay I have some things to take care of." And she practically ran out of the room needing to get as far away from here as possible.
Erin understood and she really didn't want to cause any trouble, but she felt she owed Jay after what she had put him through so here, she was facing him like she should have done so many years ago.
"So, you know what happened?"
"Hank filled me. How crazy right?"
"You are telling me? I feel like an outsider in my own life. I mean things are the same some ways and so different others. Last thing I remember I was going to propose to you, but you left?"
"I know Jay. And I am so sorry."
"We are, I mean were in love. Why did you go?"
Erin cautiously got closer, standing by the foot of his bed. "Jay I am not sorry I left but I am sorry about the way I left, without talking to you or saying goodbye. That wasn't fair to you, but I just couldn't stay. I knew you had your mom's ring and I panicked. I loved you but I didn't love me. I had to find peace with myself."
"Why couldn't you do that here? Let me help you. I would do anything for you."
"I know you would, but I couldn't stay in Chicago."
"Did we speak after you left? Did we ever work it out?"
"You called a lot after I left, and I started calling you many times but never went through with it. And then you stopped calling. Hank let me know how you were and a few times I even thought about coming back. But I never did."
"I didn't come to find you?"
"No, and I think that was the biggest sign that our love wasn't strong enough."
"What are you talking about I love you."
"No, you don't. You haven't loved me for a long time." She hated bringing all these issues back to the surface again. "Jay about 2 years ago you called me. I was very surprised and a little scared, but we spoke."
Jay was trying to grasp all the information. Two years ago he would have been with Hailey already, would he have called her to tell her that. "What did we speak about?"
"Well first we spoke about all this we just covered. I explained to you why I left, and you told me you understood, and you forgave me. You also told me about you and Hailey."
"You know I married her?"
"Of course. You told me about your relationship with Hailey. How she helped you through very hard times, how she understood you and how she stood by you no matter what. You told me you had never fallen like you did with her. I have to admit I was a little jealous but only because I wished our relationship had been like that."
"Erin our relationship was great."
"Not like you and Hailey. Even before you told me Hank mentioned it many times. How she was the partner you needed and how you were a different person with her, a happier person. Then you told me how much you love her, and you were going to ask her to be your wife. And it wasn't like you were asking my permission, it was more like closing one chapter in your life to get ready for a new one."
"I don't remember anything about my relationship with her, I barely remember her."
"It must be frustrating I am sorry. But Jay the reason why I came all the way here is because I don't want you to let this memory loss destroy your life. Don't live in the past even if right now your mind is there. I am no doctor, but I strongly believe even if your mind doesn't remember Hailey your heart does and I hope you listen to it."
Jay cleared his throat to stop the tears that were threatening to spill. "Erin I don't know how to do this."
"One day at a time. And is not permanent you'll get your memories back. Listen I am going back to DC later today but you have my number and if you need a friend you can always call me but don't stay fixated in what we had. You were a very important person in my life and to this day I consider you a friend."
"Thank you"
Will took that very opportune moment to walk in. "You ready to get out of here Jay? Erin what are you doing here?"
"Hey Will I was actually just leaving. Just came to give Jay a talking to make sure he's good and behaves." Erin gave Jay and Will quick hugs. "It was good seeing you both. Take care of each other."
Jay waited until Erin left. "Why the heck didn't you tell me I am married to Hailey?"
"Listen bro it was not my place to tell you, she wanted to do it herself and its her right. Everything okay with Erin?"
"She told why she left and that she knows about me and Hailey."
"Did Hailey see her?"
"Yes she was here when Erin showed up. She had just told me we are married. Shocking right?"
"That explains her text. Jay I know it seems shocking to you right now but believe me your relationship with her is solid. For years you guys danced around your feelings, your words not mine. But once you took the first step it was full ahead. I've never seen you happier. So do me a favor and be careful with her I think this is harder on her than you."
"I hear you."
"Good because If I have to, I will take her side."
"Geesh good to know I can't even count on my own brother."
"You ready to get out of here?"
"Yes, I have been ready. You know how I hate hospitals."
"Well let's go."
"Go where? Do I still live at my apartment? I live with Hailey, right?"
"Of course, you live with Hailey. She asked me to take you home, said you have your keys."
"Ok"
Jay was sitting in their house. Wow he has a house. Will dropped him off a few hours ago but he hadn't moved from the sofa. He told him Hailey had to go into work, but she would be back in a little. Jay just sat and looked around, he didn't feel right moving from the living room, it felt like invading her privacy. The place was homey, there was a picture of them in the coffee table an old sweatshirt he recognized laying on the sofa and another picture of the team with a little girl who he assumed was Kim's daughter.
He heard the lock on the door turning and got nervous not really knowing how to act.
"Hi."
"Hey, I am glad Will got you here. I am sorry there was an emergency, and I couldn't stick around." She lied to him; it was better than telling him she was jealous. "How are you feeling?"
"Good. Will gave me some prescription and said I have to go next week for a follow up."
She sat across from him, uncomfortable and sure what to do. "Jay since you don't remember us and I don't want to make you uncomfortable I don't think is a good idea for us to live together."
"Whatever you say."
"This is just temporary right? And I don't want you to fell obligated or forced I know you are dealing with a lot."
"Hailey if this is about Erin.."
"It's not."
"Still I want to tell you I called her before I knew about us."
"Jay I understand."
"Still, I want to tell you. She told me why she left, and she told me about us."
"About you and me?"
"Apparently I called her a while back and told her about us."
"I didn't know that." She was surprised, as far as she knew Jay didn't keep in contact with Erin.
"Well, I guess I did. And she said I told her how much you mean to me and how much I love you."
The tears were free falling now and she blamed the pregnancy hormones as she wiped them. Leave it to Jay to make her love him more even in these circumstances.
"I don't want to hurt you Hailey."
"I know you don't. You wouldn't." How she craved being in his arms. Jay didn't like seeing her cry and whenever she did, he would wipe her tears and hug her until she stopped. But right now she was a stranger to him so she wiped her own tears. "And that's why we shouldn't stay together. I can go stay with Vanessa. Oh sorry you don't remember Vanessa, she works with us in intelligence and she's a great friend."
"No, you don't have to leave I'll go stay with Will."
"Okay, we'll take it one day at a time."
He now sat in Will's sofa. Thankfully his brother hadn't moved so he knew his address and his new truck had been parked outside his house, so he drove himself. He heard from Voight and knew he couldn't go back to work until after his follow up appointment next week. His phone beeped and Hailey's name popped up next to a text message
Just checking you got in good. I know you can't work yet and will probably go stir crazy but try to rest. Ill check on you. If you need anything or you just need to talk I am here.
Not quite sure how to answer he replied with a thumb's up emoji. And then started going through his phone. Hoping his texts and pictures would give him a better idea of his life.
So Erin was very nice, she wasn't there to get in their way just to give Jay closure to start realizing Hailey is his person now. Next chapter we get more Jay and Hailey.
