Chapter 4) Life on Terra Verde

Scarlet colored the sky as dawn approached the horizon. Out of habit Hinata woke up. The clock glowed "4:55 AM" in chrome lighting. Slipping his arm off of her waist she went to check her blood sugar.

This was her daily habit.

Over the years, Hinata paid less notice to how her disease consumed her life. She checked her blood sugar anywhere from 3 to 6 times a day. Diabetes shaped how she ate, when she slept, how long she exercise and even her demeanor. She reminded herself to avoid conflict whenever possible, it took too much energy out of her. She needed time to recuperate. Carefully, she lived her quiet life.

Despite the results of experiment, a sense of cautious denial boded with her. She continue to check her sugars 3 times a day, even though she no longer needed to.

Scrubbing her fingertip with alcohol, Hinata sat by a small square window in Kakashi's pod. Other airpods and hovercrafts were zooming outside in the sky. She waited until the alcohol dried and then pricked her finger with the lancet. Squeezing the sides of her finger the first drop of blood pooled. Hinata whipped off the first droplet with a tiny gauze, and squeezed for more blood. Touching the glucometer strip to the blood that formed on her finger, the droplet drained into the test line of the strip.

Beep. Beep.

The glucometer (machine measuring blood sugar) gave her a reading of "85 mg/dL". It was a good reading considering she hadn't had breakfast yet. The reality of not needing to inject herself with insulin was surreal to her. It's been over a month since she woke up from the MediCrypt.

Crawling out of bed, her silver-haired lover made a beeline for the restroom. Sparing her a glance, he continued to trudge with his eyes half-open. He wasn't much of a morning person. Hell, he wasn't much of a person before his coffee.

Feeling her left wrist, Hinata made a nervous wrapping motion. Hinata left her smartwatch in her pod even though she's spent every night over at Kakashi's lately. Despite his flaws and small quirks, she found that she liked him a lot. It started out with simple admiration. But now, she enjoyed being around him. Worrying was her nature, yet around Kakashi she felt calm. He was a lovely package of contradictions. Despite his lazy and patient aura, he was alert and sharp to his surroundings. In his arms, she felt safe. It was simple and boring. Nothing wrong with that.

Embraced from behind, a gruff whisper tickled her ear. "Why are you up so early? Do you want breakfast?"

Hospital work was not as dramatic like the shows made them out to be. Competence, compassion, and composure were the marks of a good doctor. You don't let a patient reach a life-threatening situation, so you can play hero and save them. For the most part, the goal was to "do no harm" and prevent the emergency before it happens. It was emotionally and physically draining most days, to run around the hospital on your feet.

He was just a boring man. Living out a boring life. Life was just meant to be lived.

A lot of people were greedy for excitement in life. But an exciting life is how pretty much how you die early, ain't it? Kakashi was fine with a quiet, hidden life. It doesn't need to be something out of an epic. In fact, he gave up on expectations out of life a long time ago. It was enough that he was alive, and he couldn't afford to really think much past that as an orphan.

Nowadays, he was happy.

And it scared him.

The idea of growing old with someone usually grows old fast. People get bored of each other. Ironically, the calm and patient relationship between Kakashi and Hinata was exactly why he wanted to marry her. He was probably insane, but two weeks into dating her, he'd already started saving for a wedding ring.

A year flew by for the pair, and now it feels like he knows everything about her. From how she likes to sleep in on weekends to what a prick her father Hisashi (who was also his boss) was.

If it was an illusionary time-loop, Kakashi was fine with being stuck in this phase forever.

Konoha was a metropolis of economic, political, and cultural power. It was home to tens of millions of Faunus, Bloodlimits, Elites, and Nomads alike. To frank, however, the life of the average metropolis citizen was but a daily grind. You work to live. And there wasn't much time or money to go around enjoying all the offerings Konoha promised anyways.

In other words, life in Konoha for the average man sucked. But if you happened to find someone to fall in love with, and settle down, and maybe have a few kids with. Then maybe, it wasn't so bad.

Kakashi was still reeling from their dinner date last night. When Hinata ran the palm of her foot down his groin. The tranquil dates and passionate nights were filled with her screams, sighs, and laughter. Tonight, he planned on proposing to her.

As if to shit on his parade, Hisashi stopped Kakashi in the hospital hallway. "If you don't mind, I'd like to talk to you for a moment. Follow me."

Agitation stirred beneath Kakashi's calm façade. What the hell is the old man up to?

Kakashi always went to work on time. He avoided causing problems whenever he could. And most of all, he kept a low-profile.

And yet, before him was the hospital disciplinary panel. Orochimaru and Kabuto were amongst the faces. Hisashi grinned sadistically at Kakashi.

Take initiative and stay strong. Kakashi thought to himself. "Good morning, gentlemen. I see you all have put together a welcome party for me."

Feigning aloof, Kikashi smiled.

For his own interests as a professional, it was important to remain calm. But now Hinata was tied to him. Now, he had someone he to protect. He had to stay calm.

"We'll get to the point Kakashi," Ominously, Orochimaru hissed. "Recently, there's-ss been a lot of Nomads-sss infiltrating Elite organizations. And we were wondering if you know anything about this matter?"

Staring back at Orochimaru, Kakashi answered. "No, not that I'm aware of."

Orochimaru was a snake both in personality and form. His forked-tongue hissed whenever he talked, he had fangs, and the sclera of his eyes were yellow, these were traits from his reptilian faunus heritage. Orochimaru had sickly looking thin black hair that clung to his pale skull. High amounts of poison and arsenic in his bloodstream rendered his skin translucent white. His registered ability was venom.

In the year 3017 AD, society was stratified into Elites, Nomads, Faunus, Bloodlimits and other categories. Before the First Apocalypse there was only one type of Human and they all resembled Nomads. Nomads were humans that refused genetic modifications. The elites were humans who survived genetic modification. Faunus inherited animal-like abilities and traits, such as breathing underwater and night-vision. Whereas, those who were Genkai Kekkai possessed Bloodlimit abilities often dominated the elite.

For most of history, Nomads were the dominate sub-race, they made up the majority of the population. As the Elites came to increase in population, Nomads became attached with the stigma of being a burden to society. Nomads were humans with no unique abilities to contribute. The Purges were a series of genocides upon the Nomads that nearly wiped them out. Recently, the Elites decided that their policy on Nomads be made law. It was no longer an open secret but an open hunt. The Elite government was set on annihilating the Nomad race. By law, any Nomad who was discovered would be sent to the Police. And for this reason, humans refusing genetic enhancement were called Nomads. They lived life on the run.

"You know, I've alwayss wondered about you." Orochimaru mused. "Why iss it that you can use Shiringan only in one eye?"

Kakashi was registered to work at Konoha Hospital as a Bloodlimit Elite. His registered ability was the Shiringan that allowed him to see beneath the skin. With the Shiringan, Kakashi rose through the ranks as a surgeon. He had thought his competence and high position was enough to shield him from pesky private questions. Only to realize he was wrong.

"Sometimes, gifts have limitations." Kakashi shrugged.

Narrowing his eyes, Kabuto went for the kill. "Don't you think it's suspicious that your left eye has a scar over it, Kakashi? And this is the only eye you're able to perform Shiringan with, correct? If I didn't know any better, I would say that you stole an eye from a real Bloodlimit user and had it transplanted. Other than the Shiringan you don't have any other special abilities-"

Stay calm, stay calm. Kakashi told himself, as the heart in his chest began to race. Try as he may, Kakashi's stress pheromones were heightening. The animal-hybrid humans in the room could easily detected stress and fear.

"Well, I understand that you have concerns," Kakashi interrupted Kabuto. "but I've worked here over ten years. There's nothing to suggest that I'm involved with any Nomads. If you'll excuse me, I have work to do."

Making a turn for the doorway, Kakashi figured that management was up to their usual bullshit. Kakashi played off the accusation, and behaved as if he couldn't take these men seriously. But a police officer cut him off.

"Excuse me sir, I'm going to have to ask you to come with me. Please be calm, nothings been determined yet." Firmly, a dark-haired officer escorted him.

Running his fingers through his black hair, Sasuke felt sorry for this man called Kakashi. Reading the file report, the silver-haired man sitting across the table from him was probably framed. The suspect Kakashi should be free to go, Sasuke cleared his throat to announce the good news.

"Well, it's been determined by our Rapid Test that you are in fact a Bloodlimit user. You actually have multiple gifts, and although these gifts don't all express themselves—you are a legitimate Elite." Sasuke stated. "Your blood shows Bykugan cosmids. I guess it makes sense because the Shiringan did evolve out of the Bykugan."

Pointing to his own red irises, Sasuke chuckled. "I would know. I'm a Shiringan user myself. I apologize for your inconvenience."

Kakashi hid his shocked expression behind his fist. Since when?...Hinata…the Bykugan belongs to Hinata.
