*I do not own DanMachi or You-Zitsu
It was only noon but the establishment was filled to the brim with people of all races. The diversity in this Cafe is astounding. The food must cater to plenty of people on a broad spectrum.
As Freya said, all employees I can see in the open were female. Ranging from animal people to humans, to prums. Quite a sight to behold, I suspect that many of the boys in Class D would pass out solely from the sight of the animal people, well, acting like animals?
"Table 4's shortcake meow. Here it is."
They even add 'meow' to their vocabulary. Though It seems unnecessary for the most part considering most animal people I've met during my time here didn't have one.
The amount of different cultures in this store is not as surprising as I would have thought. his cafe is extremely popular in this part of the city. I'm surprised it doesn't have any branches in other parts of town. Though I guess I cant apply modern logic in this world.
"Mama Mia is a dwarf but she's very strong. She's extremely kind though. You'll take a liking to her right away," Syr said to me as we walked across the cafe in a long walk. But why do I get a bad feeling about this part of her being 'kind'?
And then threres Syr herself. Cheerful and vibrant. She reminds me of Kushida, and not for the right reasons. Everyone hides behind a mask, but the girl...I'll keep an eye on her.
While observing all my surroundings, I didn't realize how close we were to the back of the Cafe. Finally reaching the back, I saw a counter, behind it were shelves of alcoholic drinks and a woman. This woman was tall and burly. She had long brown that was tied up. She wore a white apron over blue underclothing. She wore a smile until she met with my face. Then she paused what she was doing and came out from the counter.
"Well if it ain't the new guy. Syr, you get back to work, I'll handle him."
She spoke in a rough manner unbefitting of a woman. A regular one that is. One look at her way of movement and outward appearance and you can tell she possesses abnormal strength. The same could be said for the other employees, listing into their actions was difficult because of their acute sense. But with that, I can tell that the women in this workplace were strong.
"So she sent ya, am I right?"
"By she, if you mean 'Freya', then yes, she is the one."
"First come with me to the back. Introductions could wait for later," I simply abided by her words and went to the back of the Cafe, with her leading the way.
I didn't bother learning the names of the staff nor the owner as I considered it a waste of time in the long run.
Turning left to a back corner, we entered a big enough room for it to be considered an office. There was a sole magic stone lamp to light up the room, giving the room itself a mysterious feel. She took a seat on a chair in the back and motioned for me to come closer. So, I did. After a few seconds, she started speaking.
"Name yourself kid."
When was the last time I was called a kid? Was it by Chabashira back during school?
"Ayanokoji Kiyotaka."
"And what can you do best that suits the needs of this restaurant?"
"While not exceptional, I can still cook. Whether it is basic recipes found anywhere or exclusive dishes from where I come from.
Using my past knowledge of food, cooking shouldn't be a problem.
"Then I can do basic activities. Such as being a waiter, dishwasher, or the janitor," I followed up on my previous statement. Though this time, she put up an eyebrow.
"And what's a janitor?"
"A word you wouldn't know I suppose. But it is someone who cleans."
She took in my words of occupation I can do. A short silence passed as I awaited her response.
"The names Mia. Call me whatever you want. I won't hold you to calling me Mama Mia because I never wanted you in the first place. Listen up, I didn't want a man to work here but after the nonstop annoyance of someone, I was forced to. Hear that, no funny business with my women."
I just nod in response, not saying a word.
"Then there's the problem with the schedule. Part-time or full time you pick."
She's giving me a choice in the hours I work. While I would consider choosing Part-time right away so as to give me time in the day to gather more information, full time wouldn't be so bad, considering this is a bar which is known to be full of the latest murmurings in the city but that's all there is, murmurings and rumors.
"I'll leave it up to you, Mia."
"Is that so. Well then, you'll be working here full time. Cooking during the day, being a waiter during the night. If something comes up then I'll see what I can do. I'm not usually so lenient with my worker's schedules," she told me, in a louder voice than usual.
"I appreciate the gesture but I'll take you up on that when I can," I replied.
"And another thing, you got a place to live? I ain't letting you sleep in the same building as my women."
"I'll find a place."
"Good, then I'll send you timetables for work. And I'll have someone show you around. Now, the important part."
I don't know what would be considered more important than work hours themselves.
"Your uniform."
...Is she serious?
"I don't suppose you'd like wearing what the girls are wearing. Would ya?"
"If I don't have a choice."
"Really? Hahaha, no, you ain't wearing that. What you're wearing right now, will do. I'll work stuff out later. Now scram, daytime hours end soon, it'll be lunch hours before long. You need to get ready before then. Watch how things are done in the kitchen and the dining area as well."
With that, she left the room, leaving me behind.
I guess I have to get to work. To think I'd be in school by now.
Though I guess studying at that school isn't very normal either.
For now, all I have to do is observe the work of the other employees before I do the same not long after.
Walking back into the busy dining area, I can see multiple animal people rushing back and forth, messing up orders and tables.
Maybe I shouldn't observe them. They're what you would call, a bad example.
I look around and see a human girl, the only one not messing up, besides Syr. I don't have the names of any employees besides Syr and Ryu so I just keep to myself while watching. At the same time, I try not to stand out. If people found out I was working here then things'll get annoying. Though I guess that'll be inevitable in the future.
Besides her, I can see the Elf coming back from outside with several bags filled to capacity with fruit and other foods. She manages to successfully keep everything balanced and not drop a single item. Impressive I must say. Most people I know would fail with carrying the bags up, much less preventing them from dropping. Her footwork is smooth and nimble, like that of an expert futbol player. Though I don't think they exist in this world.
I wonder if I should assist her? Would it seem weird since we've only just met? Or would it not make sense considering I haven't technically started my work? And then there's a fact that I'm a complete stranger. Besides, it's not like she needs assistance. Would I be criticized for not helping her? I don't want to start off on the bad foot. Keeping this job is necessary until I acquire a stable source of income in this world. I'd also rather avoid any drama that takes place in this fantasy land.
Multiple questions came up in my head on whether or not to assist the elf, but during that time, she'd already gone back to the kitchen.
Seems I missed my chance. Maybe I'll observe the kitchen. I wonder what kind of system is implemented in this cafe. A place as popular as this would need several employees to keep it hygienic and the food fresh. As well as a coordinated system of operation.
Walking to the back of the establishment, I cross through the closed doors of the kitchen and enter. Instead of what should have been an orderly area, the kitchen was chaotic. Employees were running vertically, diagonally, horizontally. Workes were switching places on the stove, one person was making stew and then the next second they were making pasta.
The floors were grimy from the seasons and sauces that spilled on the floor as the waiters carelessly took their plates to deliver to the customers. Fortunately, the food itself managed to avoid being dropped. And then there were the dishes, piled up in stacks. Ryu, who placed the bags in the respective cabinets went on to clean the stacked dishes.
There's little order, yet everything is running on time, with every order being fulfilled. This was good, but everything else could be improved.
Even though I cleaned my dorm every few weeks, it never got this messy. But I guess it wouldn't be fair to compare a single dorm to an entire restaurant.
The scene in front of me is similar to what Yamauchi's dorm looks like, well, used to look like.
Not having anything to do at the moment, I decided it would be a good idea to get rid of the dirty dishes so as to save time during the lunch and night rush. Pulling up my sleeves, I walked over to the elf girl. She was tall compared to other people in this world, who were relatively shorter than I imagined. Standing at about 165 centimeters or celch, she was about 11 cm shorter than I was, so it came to her surprise when I towered next to her, ready to wash the dishes in the other sink.
While preparing the sponge and the soap, she stayed silent and continued to keep herself busy by washing. When I finally opened the tap and started scrubbing the pots and plates, she spoke up.
"Your name is Ayanokoji correct?"
"That would be my name, yes," I gave a short reply.
"Do you have a natural talent of sorts for sneaking up on people? Or are you just crafted at the art?"
"No, I just walked up here as anyone else could have. It's not anything special, really."
"...I see. Mr. Ayanokoji, you don't have to do those. Those are for Syr, though it seems she isn't here at the moment."
"It's fine. If I'm going to start working here, I might as well do something as simple as this. Besides, I'll be starting today as a waiter rather than in the kitchen so I could at least do this instead of nothing at all. Unless there's an issue with that?" I gave a sound reasoning for my actions, and the elf has no reason to reject it.
"You would be correct with that."
Ryu ended her sentence with those few words, which ended up being the end of our conversation.
I was doing a rather quick and efficient job than I normally do. It must because of all the practice I've had whenever Amasawa came over. Ryu, on the other hand, also had a rather quick pace when out of nowhere she sprung up the conversation once again.
"Unless you weren't informed, it's best you know that this cafe turns into a bar at night to suit the taste of adventurers."
That was something I already knew. Freya said it was a cafe and a bar, and since a bar is not entirely kid-friendly, it'd make more sense for them to switch to one during night hours when the adventurers come out.
last night, I witnessed firsthand, the number of adventurers leaving the dungeon. Most of them bloodied and bludgeoned while others were cheery and excited, entering bars and brothels.
"Yeah, I know."
"I advise that you be prepared, it'll be much busier at night than during the day, especially for someone new...but if you ever need assistance, don't be afraid to ask me or Syr."
"Alright, but what about the others?" I responded back with a question.
"Don't bother. If they try to help you, they'd end up causing more problems for the rest of us," she gave a rather peevish response as if she spoke from experience.
"Ryu's right. If you ever need anything, you can ask me or the others."
Syr, the ash-colored hair girl appeared behind us, seemingly ignoring the fact that we were doing her supposed work.
"Besides, Ryu was useless when she came here, so don't be afraid to make mistakes."
Mistakes huh?
"H-hey! I wasn't useless!" Ryu yelled in an unexpected tone which was out of character. So even the seemingly calm elf gets irritated. It must be due to similar problems such as this that had occurred in the past.
The two started a light-hearted argument while I finished off the last of the dishes and utensils in the sink. Ryu, who had left with Syr to do other things, forgot about her own pile, so I took it upon myself to complete it.
After going that, I left the kitchen. It seemed that the cafe had closed for a while in order to prepare for the evening hours in which they would transfer to that of a bar.
I watched the staff organize chairs and tables. They were set up in different patterns than normally. Each table was farther away from the other than previously. Most likely due to what adventurers will do when they're drunk. Taking in the exact actions and movements of the staff, I did the same.
I went over to an area near the counter that hadn't been set as of yet and copied the women. Rereangin each table and chair didn't take as much time. Just a simple push here and there and everything was set in less than a minute. I took a couple of napkins and utensils and set them on the tables, just as the other employees were doing.
"Thanks for your help nya ~ I Appreciate it nya~."
A cat-woman with brown skin and fur showed up in front of me. She was smiling with her rather energetic tail wishing back and forth. I recognized her as one of the employees who failed to do their simple tasks during the afternoon. I wonder how she got hired?
I left that area behind and went to another, prepping to do the same as before. Except this time the cat girl was tailing following me. Unlike the other employees, she walked across the ground like a child, loud and convoluted. Either she was just that lazy or she didn't really care about social etiquette. Either way, I can understand why she was getting such harsh comments from her co-workers.
"What's your name nya~ I'm really curious about the man who was hired from Mia."
I assume she doesn't know the exact details of my employment.
When she said that, another cat woman came dashing over. More excited than a child at the park. She wore the same uniform as the other girl but was leaner and taller. Though they were both short compared to your average high school student. She had black fur extending to the ears perched on her head rather than the sides of her head. And her eyes were the color of emerald.
"No fair Meow~ I wanted to ask him his name first meow~"
"Oh well, you shouldn't have acted so shy then."
"I meowsnt shy, I was just busy with work meow~"
The cat women combined a word with her cat language or whatever it's called. I don't see the need for someone to say 'meow' or 'nya' more than once. In fact, people shouldn't say that at all. The dog people I've met have never once said 'bark'.
Having had enough of this groundless argument between the two animal women, or children with the way they were acting, I decided to end it by giving them what they wanted.
"Ayanokoji. Ayanokoji Kiyotaka."
"Ayanokoji nya? Nice name. But you don't look far eastern nya."
"Yeah meow, he's much more handsome than a far eastern man. Unless they're a little boy meow."
I don't know why she decided to add that little comment at the end of her sentence, but it sounds wrong for some reason.
Then, a human woman whom I've seen before showed up behind the two. She raised both her hands, curled them into fists, and threw them on the top of their skulls.
"Don't pester the new guy idiots."
"Says the brawn for brains meow!" the black-haired cat women yelled back.
"That hurt nya. No fair, I didn't know you were there nya."
Ignoring the protests of her coworkers, she addressed me.
"I'm Lunoire Faust. These two bimbos are Chloe Rollo and Anya Fromel."
The human, now identified as Lunoire, told me the names of these two cat people. Not that I particularly cared. That was until she named the brown-haired cat girl. Now known as Anya Fromel.
The papers I took from the guild yesterday contained the most basic of basic information on the names of high-tier adventurers only. An adventurer named Allen Fromel was near the very top. I recognized him as the Vice-captain of Freya Familia, with the man I saw with Freya, being named Ottar.
So this means the two of them are related of some sort. Since Freya is associated with the bar owner Mia, I can't say it's shocking news that her Familia member's relative is working for that associate. But that can also just be because it's almost entirely irrelevant.
"Ayanokoji. I'm going to be working here from now on."
"Yep, yep, now I'll make sure these stupid cats don't get in your way," she said as she pulled the two of them by the tail. She put up a calm from but that quickly went away as she argued with the other two the moment they left me.
I was almost finished prepping the tables when I noticed there weren't any utensils available to place on them. So, I quickly went back to the kitchen to grab a set. While going back, I noticed that all the waiters besides the cooks were gathering together in one spot. They were talking as they gave me occasional glances. Deeming it as unimportant, I left the dining area and walked toward the kitchen.
Third-person pov:
"He's good on his feet nya"
"Almost like he's an assassin meow. Like I used to."
"He was probably an adventurer back in the day or something. Though he's pretty young-looking."
Two cats and a human talked to themselves about the new employee, Ayanokoji Kiyotaka.
They noticed that the man was exceptional in his ability to keep quiet and move swiftly. Something that even second-tier adventurers fail to do.
Just then, a woman with ash-colored hair went up to the three.
"Maybe he used to be a really strong adventure outside of Orario."
"Hmm possibly, but he doesn't have the feel of an adventurer."
"Nya he's mysterious nya. He has a blank expression on all the time. It's like glued to his face or something nya."
Then an elf joined the party of 4.
"No matter who he is. It's not our business. Mama Mia accepts people regardless of background. We three would know," she said. Giving a strong opinion on the matter.
"Yeah, a least he isn't a pervert like a certain black cat I know," said the human.
"Ohh meow, at least he doesn't use muscles for everything meow," replied the black cat.
And with that the two of them starting their arguments once again. leaving the other 3 women to their own devices. The three of them then split off, getting ready for the night rush.
10 pm
Ayanokoji pov:
The night rush began not too long ago, with several adventures of all types entering the force cafe, now bar.
I have yet to start my work as a waiter as I was forced to stay behind in the kitchen to make up the work that the other employees, namely Anya and Chloe, failed to complete.
That was until Mia showed up.
"Alright, I need you to go outside and bring in customers. Come back inside after 20 or so minutes."
Listening to her words, I exited the kitchen and entered the dining area filled with adventures and other people.
I was still wearing my school uniform. No one seemed to mind it. As I approached the door, Syr came inside. Seemingly done with what I'm supposed to be doing right now.
She went past me and continued her duties. I opened the wooden doors in front of me and steep outside.
There was a slight wind but other than that, the climate was relatively warm. Now outside, I was ordered to attract customers. While I don't know how I'm supposed to that, I guess I can just invite random civilians to the bar.
Speaking in a louder voice than usual, I opened my mouth.
"The Hostess of Fertility is open. A place to relax, laugh and hang out. Whether it'd be with a friend or yourself, you won't feel alone."
This was something I created on the spot. The words themselves were monotonous.
I absolutely failed.
"Hey, that's guy right."
"Yeah, he's advertising the Hostess like Syr usually does."
"He work there or some shit."
"Thought they only hired chicks."
"...Wait if he does! Then that means he's able to hang out with all those women!"
Some rather hormonal adventures came up to me and started expressing their complaints.
I don't have time for this.
"Mia's inside. If you have a complaint, tell it to her yourself."
With those words, the rowdy men came to a stop. Silent and still.
The movements of the waitresses definitely showed that they were highly skilled. And every single one of them feared the owner, Mia. Taking me to the conclusion that Mia was a strong person. Thus, I was correct in assuming it'd stop the noisy adventurers.
They tried to leave but before they did, I got in the way. Blocking off their escape. Their only option was to go inside.
While not how I thought I was going to do it. I managed to rake in at least 13 customers. But I was not finished yet, there were at least 17 minutes left.
"Hey, whos that? I've never seen that man before?"
"Does he work for the Hostess?"
"I think he does, he's bringing in customers."
"Never seen him before."
"He's rather cute, don't you think."
"No, he's much more handsome than cute."
"I wonder what his name is."
"Do you girls want to go in? I've got some valis on me."
"""""""Yes Please!"""""""
A group of women only a few feet away were looking at me. I wasn't facing them as I was advertising in the other direction, but I still heard their conversation. I then heard them walking closer and closer until finally.
"You got a table for 8?"
A tall woman with black hair walked up to me, 7 other people, all women, behind her.
"There's no table that fits 8 people but two tables of 4 should suffice," I tell them. They all have an excited look in their eyes as they say-
"Will you be our waiter?" They all said at once.
"Depends if you all are still inside by the time I'm done with this."
"Well then, I'll make sure to order lots," she said as the group of them went inside, giggling as they did.
Just like last time, I'm not sure if I attracted customers the right way, but I did so I guess it doesn't matter.
Then I heard someone say my name.
"Ayanokoji, Mama Mia says to come back inside. Says you're getting so many customers that the place cant fit them all."
It seems I did my job too well that Lunoire had to call me inside.
Going back inside, I noticed the group of women seated on the far left, waving at me. I just nod in response. The men I brought inside don't pay attention to me, as they're laughing with friends and the other waiters.
"You managed to bring in more customers than Syr. I'm impressed Mr. Ayanokoji," Ryu says to me as I walk inside.
"Though, it could be a scary ability," she adds to her other statement.
"Good for you, Ayanokoji. Seems your doing well," Syr comes up to me and says.
"Ayanokoji is a hunk meow, he brought in so many women meow," Chloe, the black cat girl adds.
"He brought in a whole group of ruffians too. You're something else, Ayanokoji," Lunoire the human girl says to me.
"While I don't mind the compliments, it's best if I get back to work," I tell them.
I don't have time for chit chat.
"I agree with Mr. Ayanokoji. Before Mama Mia yells at us again," Ryu adds to my statement.
All of us go back to our duties. But when I'm going back to grab the plates to deliver to a specific table, I hear a rather loud group of adventurers walk in.
Third-person pov:
"Wheres Bete?"
"Said he's going to the dungeon again. He's been pretty motivated ever since argonaut killed the minotaur."
"Yes, but it's for the best if he does not. The expedition is approaching soon and I don't want him burnt out."
"I must agree with Finn."
"Wheres Tione? She always with the captain?"
"...she told me she was going to get something repaired."
A group of 4, consisting of first-tier adventures, Tiona Hiryute, Rivera Ljos Alf, Finn Deimne, and Aiz Wallenstein walked inside the bar.
END
