Protectorate II
Emily Piggot, director of the Parahuman Response Team East-North-East, is currently having a headache. Normally, she would write it off as an occupational hazard—something that typically happens on the job. Usually, that involved Assault. This time, however, the source of her headache is a rare one: Armsmaster, leader of the Protectorate East-North-East.
Particularly the case involving Lung, a teenage girl, and a five year old boy. All of which are parahumans—the type of people that Director Piggot has a distaste for. Even so, she keeps it professional and tries not to let it interfere with her work.
And that work currently involves paperwork. A lot of paperwork. The Hebert girl was easy. She called her father, the local leader of the Dockworker's Union, and they looked over and signed the papers. Isaac Moriah, on the other hand, had no one. In fact, he had nothing at all. No records, no parents, and no relatives.
"Almost as if he never existed; like he came out of thin air," thought Emily. If only she knew... but that is for later.
Currently, there is the conundrum of Isaac Moriah. He wishes to join the Wards, but he does not have a parent nor a guardian to give consent. The one that called himself Judas Iscariot took over the body and filled out the forms, but if the Youth Guard were to hear about this, there will be problems.
Director Piggot decided that is for another day, however. The power testing of both Taylor Hebert and Isaac Moriah, as well as their induction into the wards comes first. And those would have to happen this afternoon. She also wrote a note for herself to later make Isaac have regular sessions with Doctor Yamada.
For the first time in a while, Isaac woke up feeling happy and well-rested. There were no nightmares, and he was able to sleep through the night. Aside from that, he was pretty excited for today. After all, he's going to join the good guys! Not only that, but he'll be able to make good friends, too!
And so, he took Guppy with him and went to the cafeteria to get breakfast. There, he met some PRT officers. Isaac thought that they were nice. Actually, most of the people around here were pretty nice. Even the cafeteria lady, who gave Guppy a can of tuna. Most of the morning was uneventful, though.
Well, uneventful until Director Piggot sent Miss Militia to collect him. She said it's something to do with his identity? Isaac is a smart kid, but he doesn't really understand much about stuff like this. Judas or Cain will deal with it, he decided.
"Of course, I can," whispered Judas in his head. "This is child's play for someone like me."
Cain chuckled. "I used to change my identity every few centuries or so. This is no problem for me!"
Isaac hugged Guppy closer when he reached the Director's Office. Director Piggot reminded him too much of his own mother. Still, she isn't actively hostile to him, so at least he's safe.
"She has her own problems," whispered Azazel. "Like you, she has once faced an incredible adversary."
"A-adversary? She fought with the Adversary?" asked Isaac, causing everyone in the room to look at him.
Before Azazel could respond, Director Piggot interrupted him. "Isaac? Who are you speaking to?"
"U-um, oh, 'm s-sorry," said Isaac. "I-I was speaking to Azazel."
"That's... the demon, correct?" she asked. "What did he say?"
Isaac hugged Guppy tighter. "T-that y-you once fought a-a great a-adversary?"
Director Piggot sighed and pinched her nose. She reclined in her chair a bit. The fact that the child knew something like that about her is disturbing, but she would rather not vent it out on him. Still, she didn't really talk about her encounter with Nilbog, so that must mean that the child has Thinker powers.
"Enough about that," she said. "Let's talk about you, Isaac."
She brought her chair closer and looked at the sitting child in the eyes. "If anyone asks about where you came from, you know the answer right?"
Isaac nodded. "I-I'm supposed to answer that I'm an orphan? A-and that's why I triggered?"
I saac never truly understood what they mean by triggered. Still, he decided to cooperate with them. They are adults, after all. And heroes, too!
Piggot nodded. "Good. Now we need you to pick your cape name."
Isaac tilted his head. "Cape means that I have powers, right?"
"Correct," was the prompt response.
Isaac contemplated, thinking of what would be a nice name for him and his friends. The others inside of him chipped in as well—those that took an interest in it, at least. Soon, though, they all decided on a name.
In that instant, Isaac's eyes glowed. He let go of Guppy as white feathered wings sprouted from his back and his body kept transforming into different forms. Everyone in the room was taken aback by this. Even Armsmaster prepared himself, in case something dangerous would happen. Then, what happened next shook all of them to their core.
In unison, a multitude of voices came out of Isaac. "Mark 5:9, 'And He asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, saying, My name is Legion: for we are many."
As Isaac floated down, his wings disappeared. His quoted scripture echoed within the minds of the others present. Particularly the last part: for we are many.
Guppy's meow when he jumped onto his friend's lap took the others out of their stupor. Director Piggot decided to bite the bullet and just make Isaac tell her about his "friends". She took a deep breath.
"Legion," she called, taking the attention of the child. "This afternoon, you will meet your fellow wards and participate in power-testing. Weaver will do so, as well."
Isaac nodded with a smile. Looks like he will be making new friends this afternoon!
The rest of the morning went by quickly as Isaac spent it playing with Guppy and conversing with the others. At lunchtime, he met a few more heroes. As he went to the cafeteria, he saw Assault and Battery walking together. Assault said something to Battery, causing her to facepalm. This interaction made Isaac giggle. This brought the couple's attention to him. Assault grinned and decided to greet the newcomer.
"Heya, squirt!" he said. "You're the kid Armsy brought last night, right?"
He pointed to himself. "I'm Assault."
Then he pointed to his partner. "Puppy over here is Battery."
That resulted in a punch to his shoulder. Isaac giggled again.
"They remind me of myself and my beloved," whispered Eve. "They are a cute couple."
"I'm Isa—I mean, I'm Legion, nice to meet you!" he greeted with a smile. He then raised Guppy. "This is my best friend, Guppy!"
"It's a pleasure to meet you, too, Isaac," said Battery. "But we can't stay too long. We have work to do after all."
Isaac nodded. "Take care, Mr Assault and Mrs Battery!"
And with that, he went to the cafeteria. His remark made the two heroes look at each other, but they didn't look too deep into it.
Later that afternoon, Isaac finally met most of the other Wards, as well as Glory Girl and Panacea. Weaver joined them a bit after they arrived, as well. Isaac had to do power testing first, though, so he didn't get to interact with them much. He and Guppy did get hugged a bit by much of the females and he hit it off with Clockblocker. Though, he thinks that Clockblocker got into trouble when Isaac giggled at his name.
Isaac's power testing went smoothly. As did much of the others. Samson almost started an incident with Armsmaster, but was reined in by Eve. Unlike the others, Apollyon just stood there for a while. He was then replaced by the Keeper, who did as he pleased.
He produced a bomb, a key, a battery, a card, and a pill, as well as a donation box. He went away when the PRT bought his products, getting twenty-five cents in profit. When they tested the items later, they decided to label them as tinkertech and to monitor any and all items produced by Isaac. Guppy had his own form of power testing, and that went smoothly.
When it was Weaver's time for testing, the final member of the Wards finally showed up: Shadow Stalker. She saw the two new members of the Wards and went on a tirade about strength and how the new members were weak.
"Sophia Hess," declared Azazel in Isaac's head. "Tormentor of Taylor Hebert. A great sinner, but like all sinners, she can be redeemed."
"Leave this one to me," said Judas before taking over Isaac.
Shadow Stalker was mid-sentence when Judas spoke, "Your philosophy is flawed, child. The strong have no need to speak of their strength like you do, nor do they put other beneath them."
"Those are the actions of the weak," he continued "For they wish to posture before their peers and superiors."
"What did you say?!" exclaimed Shadow Stalker. "You little—"
"Face me in battle, weakling," said Judas. "You will know the error in your ways."
