The Keys of Marinus

(In the reception, the clerk leads the Princess in, followed by Barbara, Sabetha and Altos. They approach the reception desk and the clerk hands the Princess the phone – only this phone is a rod with a microphone at one end and a receiver at the other.)

CLERK: (To Princess) Here you are.

(The Clerk then leaves, and the Princess holds the phone to her ear.)

PRINCESS: Yes, hello. Who's calling?

SUSAN: (Frightened) Princess?

PRINCESS: Susan? It's me, what's going on?

SUSAN: They made me call you…

PRINCESS: Who made you call me?

SUSAN: Princess, help–!

(A slap from down the phone. The Princess' eyes widen in fright. Barbara, Sabetha and Altos see this reaction and also look worried.)

PRINCESS: (Panicked) Susan? Susan, are you there? Susan?!

SUSAN: (Timidly) They're going to kill me.

PRINCESS: I won't let that–

(The line goes dead.)

PRINCESS: Susan? Susan?!

(After a moment, the Princess slowly puts down the phone, she seems in shock, her hand trembling.)

BARBARA: What was it, Princess?

PRINCESS: (Shakily) Someone…someone has Susan. They…they're going to kill…

SABETHA: We must tell Tarron.

BARBARA: No.

SABETHA: (Panicked) Well, what else can we do? We've got to find her.

BARBARA: (Angrily) Yes, of course we have, but–

ALTOS: You're thinking of the Doctor.

BARBARA: He mustn't know anything about this. He must keep his mind absolutely clear in order to concentrate on Ian. Anyway, how do we know that Tarron isn't implicated? Who'd suspect the Chief Investigator? He was next to Ayden in court when he was killed.

PRINCESS: So were a large crowd of people.

BARBARA: That's true but it doesn't mean–

PRINCESS: I know! (A pause as she takes a breath) I'm sorry.

SABETHA: What do we do?

BARBARA: We must find Susan ourselves.

ALTOS: And remember, whoever is behind this kidnapping is either in league with the murderer or is the murderer.

BARBARA: Trouble is, where to begin? As the Princess says, there were a dozen people right next to Ayden when he was murdered. Any one of them, if not more, could be involved. The only thing we can do for now is to go over everything that has happened since we arrived in Millenius.

PRINCESS: But we haven't got the time, Barbara.

BARBARA: Well, what do you suggest?

PRINCESS: What if this doesn't have anything to do with the murder? What if someone kidnapped Susan for a completely different reason?

SABETHA: What reason?

ALTOS: Yes, the only reason I can think of is to stop us asking questions about the murder?

(They all look at the Princess, but she looks away from them.)

BARBARA: Unless you know something we don't?

(The Princess is silent for a moment…)

PRINCESS: No. I'm just… I'm just worried.

(Barbara puts her hand on the Princess' shoulder.)

BARBARA: I know, I feel the same. But the only way we can help Susan is by keeping a clear head and figuring this out.

PRINCESS: You're right. So, what connections can we think off, based on the information we already have.

(They all go silent as they think for a moment.)

BARBARA: I've got it... I've got it!

PRINCESS: What is it?

BARBARA: Well, it's a start, anyway.

ALTOS: Go on.

BARBARA: Ayden is the only one we know for certain who was connected with the crime. He knew all the others, though. That's probably why he was killed.

SABETHA: Yes, but I don't see how that helps.

ALTOS: Well, they must have been in contact when they were planning the robbery. It's just possible that his wife, Kala, might know someone that he was seeing quite frequently.

PRINCESS: Yes, that is a possibility. And based on what we heard earlier, if she did know something it's unlikely she'd come forward and say it.

SABETHA: But then why would she tell us now?

BARBARA: Because now her husband is dead. Which means she'd either be just as eager as we are to find the man that murdered him or–

PRINCESS: Or any threats her husband might have made are meaningless now because he's dead.

BARBARA: Therefore, she has no reason to stay silent.

SABETHA: I'm not so sure. She hasn't said anything since he died.

ALTOS: Shock most likely.

BARBARA: Yes, and Tarron said they had to heavily sedate her. She wouldn't have been in the right mind to tell them anything.

PRINCESS: Well, she should be by now. Come on, let's see what she has to say.

(They take of running towards Ayden and Kala's apartment.)

(The travellers run towards the apartment door and frantically ring the buzzer. Kala quickly answers the door.)

KALA: (Confused) You.

(Barbara, the Princess, Sabetha and Altos enter the apartment.)

BARBARA: (Breathless) I'm terribly sorry to disturb you. We know what a terrible ordeal you've been through, but we think you might be able to help us.

KALA: I don't think so. I know nothing.

BARBARA: Oh, please. May we come in?

KALA: If you must.

BARBARA: Thank you.

(Kala lets them come further in and they all stand by the sofa. Kala then shuts the door and turns to them.)

BARBARA: The people who murdered your husband have kidnapped Susan, the young girl who was with us.

ALTOS: They've threatened to kill her too. We thought it was possible that you might know someone your husband was seeing quite frequently.

KALA: I know of no one.

PRINCESS: Please, can you think of anyone, of anything that might give us a lead?

KALA: No, my husband was very secretive. He never told me who he saw or where he went. (Starts crying) Now, please, Ayden is dead. If he committed a crime, he's paid for it. He's dead, but I'll have to live with the memory of his crime for the rest of my life.

(The Princess steps slowly towards Kala.)

PRINCESS: I know. I understand and I'm sorry. But you're the only one who just might be able to help us. Please, try to think. I can help you if you just–

(Kala pushes the Princess back when she reaches for her.)

KALA: (Still crying) Leave me alone... I do understand and I sympathise with you. You must have been sick with worry since you spoke to Susan, but I just can't help you. I know nothing.

(Kala continues to cry…but the Princess is now staring at her coldly.)

PRINCESS: Who spoke to Susan?

KALA: Why, you did of course.

PRINCESS: No one ever said that I was the one Susan phoned.

KALA: Well…Well, you must have–

(The Princess advances towards Kala and she in turn steps back.)

PRINCESS: No. No one did.

(The Princess continues to approach Kala slowly. With each step she takes, Kala takes one back. The Princess' eyes begin to glow with a golden hue. The lights in the room flicker and dim, highlighting the golden aura that is now coming off the Princess.)

PRINCESS: Now, you listen to me very carefully. Because that child is like a granddaughter to me, do you understand? I would do anything for her, and if someone were to harm her, then that person would feel the full extent of my wrath.

(The lights have completely gone off now, the only light coming from the Princess herself, as the golden waves pour off her.)

KALA: I–I don't know–

PRINCESS: Don't lie to me! Not about Susan. You tell me where she is. You tell me where she right now or else you will be sorry!

(The Princess has backed Kala up against a chest of drawers. Unbeknownst to her, Kala is reaching inside the drawer. She pulls out a gun. Kala aims the gun at the Princess.)

KALA: Stay back!

(The Princess knocks the gun away with her hand, sending the weapon flying across the room and leaving Kala with nothing. As she does, a wind kicks up and begins to howl around the room. The light from the Princess' eyes intensifies, almost blinding Kala as she looks away in fear.)

PRINCESS: Do not threaten me! Understand that you are moments away from your end. The only thing that can save you now is telling me where Susan is, and if she is harmed, I will see you suffer for all eternity! Your every waking moment will be filled with unimaginable, never ending pain! Now, tell me where Susan is?!

(Kala has now sunk to the floor, cowering beneath the Princess who looms over her with the golden aura surrounding her and her vicious glare. Behind her, Barbara, Sabetha and Altos are huddled together, shielding their eyes form the light. Finally, Kala points towards the closet behind the Princess, by the others.)

KALA: In there! She's in there! Please, I'm sorry! Please, don't hurt me! Please!

(The howling wind comes to a stop. The golden glow form the Princess begins to fade. The lights flicker back on to their previous brightness. When all is back to normal, the Princess goes to the cupboard and pulls it open. Inside is Susan, bound and gagged, but alive.)

PRINCESS: (Relieved) Susan!

(The Princess quickly begins undoing the ropes around Susan. Outside in the room, the others restrain Kala and retrieve the gun – although Kala is to petrified to put up a fight. Once the Princess has the ropes undone, Susan yanks of the gag and throws her arms around the Princess.)

SUSAN: (Relieved) Princess!

(Susan cries into the Princess as the old woman holds her.)

PRINCESS: It's okay. It's okay, I'm here now. You're safe, Susan. You're safe.

(The Princess continues to hold Susan for a while, then she looks over her shoulder, seeing Barbara stood in the door way. Barbara is shocked by what has just happened.)

BARBARA: Princess…what was that?

(The Princess is silent for a moment. Then she nods to the telephone on the nearby desk.)

PRINCESS: Call the reception. Ask to speak to Tarron and get him over here to arrest Kala.

BARBARA: But–

PRINCESS: If it's that important to you, I'll explain later, but not now. Please, Barbara.

(Barbara continues to stare for a moment, then closes her mouth and nods. She then picks up the phone and dials. The phone is on speaker so everyone can hear. After ringing for a moment...)

CLERK: (Through speaker) Yes?

BARBARA: I'd like to speak to Interrogator Tarron.

(A muffle as the phone is exchanged.)

TARRON: (Through speaker) This is Tarron.

BARBARA: This is Barbara Wright. Have you had the results yet on the gun that killed Ayden?

TARRON: No, not yet.

BARBARA: Well, just to save time I'll tell you what they say. Ayden was killed by his wife, Kala.

TARRON: What?

BARBARA: I'm with her now. Why don't you come and get her?

TARRON: We'll be right there.

(The line then goes dead and Barbara puts down the phone.)

SUSAN: (Still crying) I want to see Grandfather.

PRINCESS: Okay. I'll take you to him once the guardians arrive.

(The Princess continues to comfort Susan as they wait in the cupboard.)

(Later, they are all in reception with the Doctor. Susan is sat on the waiting bench with the Doctor on one side and the Princess on the other, each with an arm wrapped around her. Barbara, Sabetha and Altos stand around them.)

DOCTOR: But how did you work out, Kala was lying, Princess?

PRINCESS: There was no way she could have known we talked to Susan, and yet she did. She also knew it was me who spoke to her. After that I…frightened her a little and the truth came out.

DOCTOR: You should have told me.

BARBARA: It was me who said not to tell you. I wanted you focused on helping Ian.

PRINCESS: But we all agreed our course of action.

DOCTOR: (To Princess) And what about when you…frightened Kala?

(The Doctor looks at the Princess critically.)

PRINCESS: I got angry. I was scared of what she might have done to Susan and… It all just came out.

(The Princess looks down in shame. But then the Doctor reaches over and holds her hand. She looks up, to see him smiling softly.)

DOCTOR: (Quietly) Thank you.

(The Princess smiles back a little.)

BARBARA: The import thing is that Susan is safe now.

DOCTOR: Yes. I only wish I could say the same thing about Chesterton.

ALTOS: But surely they'll stop the execution now that Kala's confessed.

DOCTOR: I hope so. I sincerely hope so.

(Tarron enters through the nearby door. They all look to him as he approaches the group.)

DOCTOR: Well?

(Tarron looks grime and does not answer.)

DOCTOR: (Louder) Well?

TARRON: Kala's made a full statement. She's named her accomplice.

DOCTOR: Ah, then you can stay the execution.

TARRON: No, I can't. Kala's sworn testimony states that the man she was working with was Ian Chesterton.

DOCTOR: Impossible!

BARBARA: But she's lying!

TARRON: Yes, I have doubts myself. She's a vicious, dangerous woman. But just doubts aren't enough to ask for a stay of execution. They'd need positive proof.

SUSAN: What about that man who called on the phone?

DOCTOR: When was this?

SUSAN: Right before the Princess came and rescued me. I heard Kala talking to this man on the phone and he told her to kill me.

PRINCESS: (Angrily) He what?!

(Susan jumps at the Princess' raised voice and anger. However, seeing Susan's reaction, the Princess calms down. And once she does, Susan cuddles back into the Princess' side again.)

TARRON: (To Susan) Did you recognise the voice?

(Susan shakes her head.)

DOCTOR: (To Susan) What else did he say?

SUSAN: (Hesitantly) Not much… Just that he'd collect the key later and then pick her up.

DOCTOR: Collect the key… (Suddenly he laughs madly!) Yes, yes. (To Tarron) You understand? The villain that planned all this, the one who planned this whole affair, is now planning to collect the key! What a wonderful opportunity it gives us to catch him red-handed. And to release Chesterton!

(Later, the reception is dark, and the Doctor and Princess are hidden behind the door leading in. They've been waiting a while, but then the door opens. The Doctor moves back and so does the Princess, to avoid being seen. A cloaked figure enters and crosses the room to a locked cupboard behind the desk. He does not see the Doctor or Princess. He pulls out a key and unlocks the cupboard. Quietly and carefully, he then opens the doors and removes the murder weapon – the mace. Just then, Tarron and the Clerk jump out from under the reception desk and grab the thief. He struggles but the two men hold him as they make their way around the desk. Once he is still, the Doctor flicks on the light, revealing all. The thief has a hood on covering his identity. The Doctor approaches and removes the hood, revealing it to be…)

DOCTOR: You!

(It's Eyesen.)

TARRON: Call the prison.

PRINCESS: (Coldly) No.

(They all look to the Princess, who is glaring spitefully at Eysen. Her eyes once again glowing with the same angry golden hue as before.)

DOCTOR: Your highness, no!

PRINCESS: He was going to have, Susan killed!

DOCTOR: Yes, and I am just as angry as you–

PRINCESS: Then you'll understand why I'm doing this.

(The Princess lifts her hand, golden energy flowing around it, as she takes aim at Eyesen who looks terrified. He struggles, but while Tarron and the Clerk are confused they still manage to hold him still.)

DOCTOR: If you kill him, we lose the proof we need to free Chesterton.

PRINCESS: No, these two have seen him. They'll testify.

DOCTOR: And what about you, you'll have committed murder.

PRINCESS: An eye of an eye.

DOCTOR: If you kill him, you're no better than he is!

PRINCESS: That isn't going to work on me, Doctor.

(The glow around the Princess' hand intensifies, as if she is about to fire something at him.)

DOCTOR: If you do this, you'll be no better than your mother!

(Suddenly the golden aura fades from around the Princess, leaving behind a startled look on her face, as if realising what the Doctor had pointed out. She looks at her out stretched hand, the one pointing at Eyesen. She slowly lowers it, then looks to the Doctor, a mixture between scowling and relief on his face.)

DOCTOR: I'll call the prison.

(The Doctor reaches for the phone, while the Princess lowers her head in shame, for the second time.)

(Later, the Doctor stands at the reception desk with the mace in hand. Around him are the Princess, Susan, Ian, Barbara and Tarron. They all watch as the Doctor then opens up the head of the mace, to reveal inside it…)

SUSAN: The key!

IAN: How did you know it was there, Doctor?

DOCTOR: It had to be. I knew it all along. Until we knew the who culprit was, the information was no good.

TARRON: Everyone and everything that went in and out of that vault was checked. Everything, except this mace.

BARBARA: Have you any idea why they did it?

PRINCESS: Money I'd imagine.

TARRON: You're absolutely right. Kala and the Prosecutor had planned to steal the key and sell it. And Chesterton here just happened to walk right into the middle of it. They made him look so guilty I never doubted for a moment he was the one.

(The Doctor chuckles.)

DOCTOR: You should read Pyrrho, my boy. He founded Scepticism. A great asset to your business.

IAN: Thank heaven you remembered reading Pyrrho, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Reading? What are you talking about? I met the man.

(They all laugh happily.)

SUSAN: Whoopee! (Susan hugs the Princess) Now we can go and join Altos and Sabetha.

IAN: Oh, have you sent them on ahead, Doctor?

DOCTOR: Well, there was no point in keeping them here, so I thought it might cheer Arbitan up to know that we'd been successful.

PRINCESS: And to see his daughter again after so long.

DOCTOR: Yes, quite.

BARBARA: That'll be lovely for him. Although I wish we could have been there to see the reunion.

SUSAN: Yes, me too.

(The clerk enters and hands Tarron a piece of paper. Tarron nods then approaches the Doctor.)

DOCTOR: (To Tarron) Ah, is that the authorisation?

TARRON: Yes, you've just been given permission to take the key, sir.

(Tarron hands the key over to the Doctor.)

DOCTOR: All we need now is the wrist strap you impounded from Chesterton.

(Tarron holds the travel dial out for Ian to take.)

IAN: Ah. Thank you.

CLERK: I see you're all wearing them. What are they for?

DOCTOR: Our means of travel.

(Ian puts on his travel dial.)

IAN: They do look a bit odd, but they work. They give us movement through space.

TARRON: I don't believe it.

DOCTOR: (To Ian) Show him.

IAN: All right.

(Ian, Barbara and Susan move off to the side.)

IAN: Now.

SUSAN: Ready?

BARBARA: Steady.

IAN: Go.

(The three all turn their travel dials and vanish. Tarron and the Clerk are surprised.)

DOCTOR: Well, they might have waited for us.

(The Princess laughs, taking the Doctor's arm.)

PRINCESS: Oh, don't fart. Come on, let's get after them.

DOCTOR: Yes, let's.

CLERK: I don't understand. Where have they gone?

PRINCESS: To the same place we're going.

DOCTOR: Goodbye, my friends.

(The Doctor and Princess smile, before each active their travel dial. Then they too vanish.)

(On the beach of the island – where this whole adventure started – the Doctor and Princess appear in front of the ship disguised as a police box. They look around but see no one else.)

PRINCESS: (To Doctor) Where are the others?

DOCTOR: They must have materialised inside the building. I adjusted ours dials so that when we returned, we'd arrive at the ship.

(The Doctor holds out a hand, cautiously moving until he is touching the door of the wooden box.)

DOCTOR: Ah ha! It appears Arbitan has kept his word and has lifted the forcefield.

(The Doctor pulls out the key and is about to put it in the lock when the Princess rushes towards him and grabs his arm.)

PRINCESS: Careful! What if…they've been here and laid a trap.

(The Doctor and Princess look around cautiously. The Doctor then carefully undoes the lock and pushes open the door to the ship. They wait a moment, look to each other, then slowly enter. Inside everything seems to be as it was before.)

PRINCESS: Nothing's been touched it seems. The door leading to the rest of the ship is closed.

(The Doctor stands over the console, examining it.)

DOCTOR: The controls are as I left them. There doesn't appear to be any subterfuge. It doesn't seem like we've had any visitors while we've been away.

PRINCESS: We're lucky then.

DOCTOR: Yes very, considering you've used your powers twice on this planet in less than a twenty-four hours.

(He looks to her with critical glare.)

PRINCESS: Which is why we need to get out of here, before whoever they sent catches up to us.

DOCTOR: Yes, well, let's go and gather the others and be on our way then.

(The Doctor activates the door controls and the door opens.)

PRINCESS: Perhaps you should lay a trap, in case someone other than us tries to gain access to the ship.

DOCTOR: A very good idea.

(The Doctor presses a few switches on the console then ushers the Princess out. They hurry back outside and the Doctor locks the doors behind him.)

PRINCESS: Why the hurry?

DOCTOR: I've done as you said and set a trap. Should anyone other than me enter the ship first, the room will be filled with intense flashing lights and a barrage of painful noises.

(The Princess stares at him for a moment.)

PRINCESS: Is that is. Some flashes lights and scary noises.

DOCTOR: Well, it should disorient them and scare them off.

PRINCESS: Yes, but couldn't you–

DOCTOR: No, no, we haven't got time for anything better. Now come on, I'd rather not doddle around here any longer than I have too. The longer we stay in this time and place the more likely that they'll catch us, now come on.

(The Doctor leads the Princess up the beach and towards the large building.)

(Once inside the building, the Doctor and the Princess wander around the corridors. They are lost.)

PRINCESS: (To Doctor) I told you we should have gone left.

DOCTOR: Well, a fat lot of good that does us now.

PRINCESS: What if we hug the left wall?

DOCTOR: This isn't a maze!

PRINCESS: Well, we're lost as if we were in a maze!

DOCTOR: (Hushed) Shush, quiet!

PRINCESS: (Whispering) What is it?

DOCTOR: I thought I heard something.

PRINCESS: Well, surely it's either Susan and the others or Arbitan.

DOCTOR: Yes, but what if it's not. What if it's our friends catching up to us?

PRINCESS: I see.

DOCTOR: We'll proceed with caution.

(The Princess nods and they continue on. They approach a corner. The Doctor motions for the Princess to wait and back against the wall. She does. The Doctor then bends down to look around the corner and…comes face to face with Ian. Each gasp as they pull away from each other. The Princess steps out from hiding and Barbara and Susan do the same as they all chuckle.)

DOCTOR: (To Ian) What on earth are you doing, dear boy? You frightened the life out of me.

IAN: Doctor, I'm sorry.

SUSAN: Where were you both?

PRINCESS: At the ship.

DOCTOR: Yes, the forcefield's been lifted, and I peered in for a moment or two. Now, everything appears to be all right.

SUSAN: Oh, good.

BARBARA: Arbitan kept his promise, then.

DOCTOR: Yes, well, come along, come along. You're all running around here like a lot of scared chickens.

IAN: We were waiting for you two.

DOCTOR: We're here! My dear Chesterton, sometimes you drive me round the bend. I don't know why I put up with you.

SUSAN: Grandfather, come on.

PRINCESS: Yes, leave the man alone.

(The Princess and Susan lead the Doctor on as Ian and Barbara follow, chatting to each other. They continue on through the corridors with the Doctor leading the way. However, when they reach a corner, Ian stops the Doctor. He motions for everyone to stop and they do. Ian looks to the corner, then points to the Doctor's cane and mimes attacking. The Doctor nods and readies his cane. Ian then casually makes his way past the corner without looking. A Voord comes around the corner with a knife, aiming to kill Ian, but the Doctor comes up behind him and strikes first, hitting the Voord with his cane and knocking it out.)

IAN: Well done, Doctor. I was afraid of this.

DOCTOR: Yes, and I think it's time now to go back to the ship.

BARBARA: What about Sabetha and Altos?

SUSAN: Yes. They may be hiding somewhere.

PRINCESS: Or worse, captured.

IAN: Yes, right... We split up. Susan, you come with me. We'll go in search of Arbitan. Doctor, you, the Princess and Barbara see if you can find Sabetha and Altos. Give me the key.

(The Doctor hands over the final micro-key for Arbitan's machine.)

DOCTOR: Here, and don't part with it until you're absolutely sure it goes into the right hands.

IAN: Don't worry, I won't. Come on, Susan.

(Ian and Susan continue on around the corner.)

DOCTOR: (To the Princess & Barbara) And you two can accompany me.

PRINCESS: Yes, all right.

BARBARA: I think we'd better take this with us.

(Barbara bends down and takes the unconscious Voord's knife.)

DOCTOR: Yes, yes.

BARBARA: Just in case.

(The Doctor, Princess and Barbara then turn around and head back the way they came.)

(They search around for a while, before they hear two voice talking to one another. The Doctor motions the Princess and Barbara to stop and they do. The Doctor creeps on a head and peers into a cell to see Sabetha and Altos tied up back to back.)

DOCTOR: (Quietly) Altos? Sabetha?

(Sabetha and Altos look over and are relieved to see the Doctor.)

SABETHA: Doctor!

ALTOS: Be careful, the Voord have taken over–

DOCTOR: Yes, we know.

(The Doctor begins working at the lock to the cell as the Princess and Barbara come around to join him.)

SABETHA: Their leader, Yartek, he's killed my father and has the all the other keys.

ALTOS: Where is the final one?

PRINCESS: It's with Ian.

SABETHA: You must warn him at once.

BARBARA: I'll go and get him.

PRINCESS: Be careful.

BARBARA: I will.

DOCTOR: Wait, before you go, give me the knife. I shall need it to cut Altos and Sabetha free.

(Barbara hands the Doctor the knife before then running off to find Ian and Susan. After a moment, the Doctor breaks the lock and pushes open the cell door. He and the Princess enter and quickly set to work freeing Altos and Sabetha.)

DOCTOR: Tell me, does Yartek know we're coming?

ALTOS: Yes. I'm sorry, I gave you up when he threatened Sabetha.

PRINCESS: You have nothing to be sorry for.

SABETHA: He captured us when we first arrived, took the keys from us.

DOCTOR: So, when Yartek gets the final key, his power will be absolute.

ALTOS: Yes, with the aid of the machine he could control us all.

DOCTOR: And our impulse to leave this planet would be destroyed.

PRINCESS: Leaving us sitting ducks for anyone who comes looking for us.

(The Doctor and Princess share worried looks. Then, finally, the Doctor finishes cutting Altos and Sabetha free. As they all get up off the floor, Barbara returns with Ian and Susan. They all greet each other warmly with hugs and handshakes.)

DOCTOR: (To Ian) You heard about Arbitan?

IAN: Yes. We met the man who's usurped his place.

DOCTOR: Well, give me the key. We must have it destroyed.

SUSAN: Ian gave it to him.

DOCTOR & PRINCESS & SABETHA: What?!

DOCTOR: (To Ian) You gave it away?

IAN: (Smirks) I gave him a key. Sabetha, you remember that fake key? Barbara found it on the idol while we were searching for the third.

SABETHA: Yes, I remember.

IAN: That was the key I gave him. (He holds up another key) This is the genuine key.

DOCTOR: (Laughing) My dear boy!

(The Doctor shakes Ian's hand.)

SABETHA: (Panicked) We must go quickly!

IAN: Why?

ALTOS: Yartek may put that false key into the machine at any moment. If he does, it will set the machine in motion, but once it feels the full force of the power, it'll break under the strain.

IAN: You mean the machine will blow up?

ALTOS: Yes.

DOCTOR: There's not a moment to lose. Come on!

ALTOS: (Continuing) And everything in this building with it.

PRINCESS: Never mind that now, run!

(They all run out of the cell and towards the exit of the building. They race down another series of corridors before reaching a dead end. They all hurriedly look around.)

DOCTOR: About where you are, Susan.

IAN: What do you mean, about? Don't you know exactly?

DOCTOR: No, I don't! Now hush up and look!

PRINCESS: Look for a small stone, it should give away to your touch and open up the wall.

DOCTOR: (Muttering) Somewhere here. Somewhere here.

(They search frantically, pressing against the wall when …)

SUSAN: I've found it!

PRINCESS: Well done, Susan!

DOCTOR: Don't waste time with congratulations, just–

(Suddenly there's a huge explosion and the whole building shakes. Rubble begins to fall as they all scream. Susan manages to push the button and the wall turns open to reveal the outside. The Doctor pushes the Princess and Susan through. Altos then pushes out Sabetha and Barbara before he and Ian follow right as the roof caves in behind them. They then keep running all the way to the beach, turning back to see the once proud building collapse in on itself.)

(Later, the Princess, Susan and Sabetha are stood outside the ship. After a moment the Doctor exits, having disabled the trap he'd left behind.)

SUSAN: Everything all right, Grandfather?

DOCTOR: Yes, my child. Chase the others up, will you? I'm in a hurry to leave.

SUSAN: Right.

(Susan runs off towards Ian, Barbara and Altos.)

DOCTOR: I'm glad to have this moment alone with you, Sabetha. I want to speak of your father. You know, he was a very wise and brilliant man, and I know how you felt when you learned of his death.

SABETHA: And his life's work destroyed.

DOCTOR: No, no, I wouldn't say that.

PRINCESS: The Doctor's right. His machine might have been destroyed but you're still here. And I can assure you, you were worth far more to him than any machine.

DOCTOR: Yes, I completely agree with the Princess. And anyway, I don't believe that man was made to be controlled by machines. Machines can make laws, but they cannot preserve justice. Only human beings can do that. Now I only hope that you'll carry on his good work. His genius now continues on in you.

PRINCESS: I'm sure you'll make him proud whatever you do, Sabetha.

SABETHA: Thank you, both of you.

PRINCESS: And thank you for helping us on this difficult quest, and for looking after our friends.

DOCTOR: Bless you, my child. Goodbye.

(The Doctor steps into the ship.)

PRINCESS: Goodbye, Sabetha.

SABETHA: Goodbye, Princess.

(The Princess gives her one last smile, then steps into the ship. Inside the Doctor is stood over by the console, making sure that everything is ready for their departure. As he does the Princess hurries over to him.)

PRINCESS: (Lowly) Before the other come in, are you sure they won't be able to follow us?

DOCTOR: If any of our people are still here, they shouldn't be able too, no. So long as you keep those powers of yours in check.

PRINCESS: Can you tell if they're still on the planet?

DOCTOR: Not without alerting them to where we are. (He pushes a few buttons then sighs) Oh, go and hurry the others along will you, I don't apricate being kept waiting.

(The Princess makes her way back over to the door and leans out. Susan is stood outside talking to Sabetha and Altos.)

PRINCESS: Come on, Susan. Your grandfather's eager to get going.

SUSAN: (To Sabetha) We've got to go now. Bye, Sabetha.

SABETHA: Goodbye, Susan.

SUSAN: Goodbye, Altos.

ALTOS: Goodbye, Susan.

(Susan follow the Princess back into the ship. After a moment, Ian and Barbara then enter too and the doors close behind them.)

DOCTOR: Is everyone aboard?

IAN: Yes, and here. (He holds out the micro-key) Altos said I should give this to you.

DOCTOR: Really, how delightful. (He takes the key from Ian) But you should have left it with Sabetha, in case she wished to continue her father's work.

PRINCESS: Perhaps she doesn't want to continue her father's work, and instead work on some brilliant new invention?

DOCTOR: I sincerely hope so. In any case, I'll happily hang on to this, as a memento.

(The Doctor puts the key in his pocket.)

DOCTOR: Now, time we were off.

(He then activates the controls and the glass column in the centre begins to rise and fall, as the ship's engines whirl and wheeze. Outside on the beach, the blue box fades away. Its crew now heading towards their next adventure…)
