Nick dropped her off near the kitchen and quickly had to leave her again as he was called to yet another responsibility; but not before he introduced her to Frypan who, too, looked quite disheveled, but smiled when he saw her.
"Did you like the soup I made you?" He asked her.
She was taken aback at by his warmth. She nodded quickly and he laughed,
"You better! I made it just for you. Newt wouldn't take leftovers, ya know? Said your stomach was still fragile or something. You feelin' better now, Greenie?"
She nodded again and quietly muttered a thank you. Frypan laughed again and offered her his arm as he weaved her through the people gathering in the hall. He sat her down at a table at which he joined after he helped a bit with serving the food.
She was glad it was only Frypan who joined her. She might have been too overwhelmed to eat if there were too many others and she was indeed hungry by the time he put a plate of food in front of her.
His food was good. Surprisingly. She ate everything on her plate and more. Frypan was more than delighted to get her a second portion.
She had been too focussed on eating to notice too well at first the mass of boys that were in the hall having their dinner. They came and went and every so often they turned towards her and stared. It made her uncomfortable but she pretended not to notice.
It wasn't hard to do so since Frypan frequently talked to her throughout the meal. She was glad he had a lot to say and less to ask. She didn't feel like she had the energy to answer questions.
Dark approached rather quickly. The maze walls swallowed the evening rays and caused shadows to form across the glade at a rapid pace.
She was soon approached again by Nick, who offered to help her back to the med-hut. This time, she took his hand. He smiled weakly at her for the first time. She felt a twinge of empathy for him for reasons she couldn't yet be sure of.
Before they went to the the med-hut, Nick guided her to the washrooms upon her request. He stood outside and waited, stopping others from entering as she quickly went about using the bathroom, washing her hands and gargling out her mouth as best as she could.
She felt so gritty and she could feel her straight brown locks that, she noticed, reached to her shoulder blades stick to her face. The black pants and khaki-green shirt that she was dressed in was very scruffy and had dirt stains on them.
She knew she couldn't shower with her leg in this condition. Perhaps she wouldn't even get the chance to once it got better... she might make a run for it as soon as she was able to do so.
When they reached her temporary bed in the med-hut she sank into it and felt a wave of exhaustion sweep over her. Nick hadn't said a word the whole way but after he let go of her arm, sitting her down, he began to collect a few things from the table here and there while briefing her about how she would start working with each of the keepers to see what job would fit her best.
"We will have to see how you feel on that leg tomorrow. Jeff did mention that as long as you don't put too much pressure on it, you should be ok to move around. You'll have people to help so you don't have to..."
His voice became more and more distant and all she could do was lay her head and upper body horizontally on the bed, leaving her legs dangling on the side as she could barely keep her eyes open.
She fell asleep almost instantly.
