Astro was completely shocked by the question, but he reluctantly answered "Uh… I'm Astro Buddy no.1425." The robot stood up fully, once again towering over Astro "Astro Buddy… Interesting." Astro noticed a difference in the robot's voice as if the tone had totally changed.
Astro kept his distance "Yeah… it's just Astro though. Weren't you going to kill me?" The little robot cowered, reading himself for the worse.
"Kill you? My programming doesn't view you as a threat to me, so there's no need. Oh, maybe telling you my designated name will put you to ease? I am S-130: Sigma."
Astro looked up from his hands "Eh… that's a mouthful… maybe I'll just call youse Sigma for now." Knowing that he wasn't a target for elimination did put him at ease.
Sigma's hand went towards Astro in an open palm position causing Astro to duck and cover. There was only silence between the two for a few seconds till Astro looked up to see Sigma was holding his hand out for a handshake "Don't worry I don't wish any harm." Astro looked up at Sigma inquisitively. He couldn't believe the robot that tried to kill him a moment ago suddenly wanted to be friendly with him. With a bit of hesitation, Astro got around to shake his hand.
"Listen, just because I shook your hand doesn't mean suddenly we're friends, got it?"
"Understandable. I did just try to kill you just a moment ago."
Astro crossed his arms in annoyance, however, he did notice that Sigma felt… off. Astro looked up and down at Sigma "Say, do you feel any different at all?" Sigma placed his hand on his chin "You know what now that you mention it my processor and my programming feel… altered?" That response confirmed it, Astro's idiotic plan somehow worked, but not the exact results he expected. Sigma felt whatever the robot equivalent of a pounding headache was, he just sat back down while rubbing his head meanwhile Astro's tiny little mind finally had a thought, a little messed up, but a thought nonetheless. Astro sat down on the floor as well but maintained some distance between the two, Sigma looked over to Astro.
"Hey, you're well equipped with high-tech weaponry and stuff like that right?"
"Yes… from my accurate target interface to the missiles in my chest. Why do you ask?"
Astro's eyes widened at the word "missiles" but for now, he had to contain his excitement for the moment "Oh just curious, as an intelligent robot as yourself you can tell that the world obviously has gone to shit."
Sigma's metaphorical eyebrow raised "Yes, what are you getting at, Astro?"
"Well, I'm just saying that I'm not equipped with such great technology so there's no way I could protect myself out there, y'know?" Astro gave Sigma a smile with devious intent behind it.
"That is also true. However, that leaves me curious, if I remember correctly all known Astro Buddies had been discontinued due to a mass product recall. How did you manage to end up here?"
Sigma's words seem to strike something in Astro, he simply didn't have an answer to that question in fact he didn't remember much right before he went into shut down. All he could seem to recall was the family he was living with at the time, The Hendersons, and their home, his home. "I-I don't even know, man…" Astro searched his mind for a bit "Oh I know! I still have my old address, my stuff gotta be in there for sure! Maybe that'll jog my memory a bit." Astro immediately stood up and dusted himself off "We're going to my house and you're taking me." Astro said in an authoritative tone.
"Why do I have to take you?"
"You don't expect me to walk out there do you completely defenseless?" Astro crossed his arms.
Sigma let out a sigh "Fair point. I'll escort you." He stood up and added, "How are you sure this house is still standing, let alone your stuff?"
"It's got to be! We just got to go, please?" Astro pulled off the puppy dog eyes at Sigma.
Sigma simply nodded in agreement "Fine, we'll go. We'll just have to be careful." Astro just replied with a dismissive "Yeah yeah." and made his way to the door. The two made their way out of the ruins of a building as they made their way to the open streets they warily moved about. Sigma had his guns ready for any potential danger while keeping an eye out on Astro, who may or may not wander off at some point. Astro hated seeing those creatures again with their grotesque features and their orifices leaking awful fluids, but luckily he was out of their view. Sigma was constantly scanning the area with each of the smaller eyes greatly widening his field of vision. "Oh hang on, I just got an idea!" Astro stretched his limbs out and wrapped himself around Sigma like a makeshift backpack of sorts "This way I can stay out of the way while you do all of the grunt work." Sigma just grunted and carried on with the task at hand. He looked back at Astro again and asked "Where is this house of yours?" Astro searched his memory in hopes of an answer "If I remembered correctly… It's uhh… aw shit, it's on the other side of town. Youse best get those legs of yours into gear." Sigma checked the surrounding area once more "That shouldn't be a problem at all. Just hang tight." He said as the panels on his calves opened up to reveal the engines inside.
The hum of the engine made Astro cling even tighter right before the thrusters ignited and Sigma shot down the street with incredible speeds. They're were zooming down the streets of Queens with ease, to kill time Astro thought he'd ask a question or two. Astro tried his best to speak over the engines.
"Hey, do you have any idea what happened here? Like why's everything gone to shit?"
"War. An oil crisis drove the whole world into a worldwide war." Sigma simply answered.
"Like, World War three? Jesus."
"I suppose so, soon the war escalated to a nuclear arms race between several countries eventually wiping out humans or least turning them the creatures that roam the streets."
"Then… what does that make you? What were you doing in that building?"
"Well the American military decided that humans weren't enough so they came up with the S series, robots made to turn the human soldier obsolete. I was created to be the ultimate version of them, but I guess the bombs before I could be any use."
Astro went quiet once more, he watched the ruins of several buildings as they flew by them he then looked up to the sky to see the sun was heading west. It was the late afternoon, but Astro was determined to head home and retrieve his belongings. A trip that would've taken Astro hours if he went alone seemed like it only took them a few short minutes because before they knew it they were at the address Astro mentioned. The little bot detached himself from Sigma, despite the house looking like complete garbage, Astro was just happy to see it still standing after all this time. When Astro went for the door it didn't give immediately, he looked around the concrete porch then he found a plastic rock with a key underneath. He unlocked the door and bashed it open with his shoulder and Sigma followed behind. This suburban home definitely has seen better days, to right was the stairs that went up and curved to the left that was just falling apart, and to the left was the entrance to the living room. Astro made his way into the living room past the rotting wood of the entrance, the top piece fell behind which made Astro jump while rats scurried across the floor.
Sigma stayed in the entryway, inspecting it with curiosity, to the left of him was a small table that was hidden behind the door it seemed to have collapsed on itself. The very tacky wallpaper was peeling down the wall, Sigma ignored that and made his way to the kitchen which was just straight ahead. Meanwhile, Astro was checking every nook and cranny of the living room "What the hell! I know it's around here somewhere…" He peeked his head inside the cabinets, but he immediately pulled his head out with his face covered in spider webs plus a bonus spider. Astro yelped and started to wipe his face "Augh! I hate spiders!" Sigma came into the living room to see what the commotion was about, he rolled his eye at the ridiculous sight. Sigma sat down on the tattered rags of a sofa that squeaked under his weight. On both sides of the sofa were side tables and on the right was a framed picture that caught Sigma's attention, he picked it up and blew the dust from it underneath the dust was a picture of a family consisting of a single mother and two children no younger than 14.
"Astro would this be the family that you mentioned earlier?"
Astro looked up from the drawer he was searching then walked over to Sigma "Hey gimme that! That's private…" He instantly snatched the picture from Sigma. "Why don't you make yourself useful and help me look for my stuff." Astro clutched the picture close.
" And what does this 'stuff' look like?" Sigma crossed his arms at Astro.
"Well, it's a blue backpack thingy! Damn it, it's not here…"
"No need to yell. Fine, I'll help you look, just tell me where to start."
"I guess try looking upstairs, I'll try the rumpus room."
The two robots separated into different directions with Sigma heading up the stairs while Astro went for the rumpus room entrance underneath the stairs. The stairs themselves were rickety and looked as if they could just give out at any moment. Sigma climbed the stairs with caution, but one step fell underneath his foot and Sigma could hear a "D'oh!" come from downstairs. He moved on to the second floor which was carpeted unlike the first floor, Sigma noticed the bathroom first which was completely unusable at this point so he moved on from it and made his way down the hallway. He entered the first door he saw which he assumed was the master bedroom, the room at first glance seemed pretty normal, it was sizeable and felt as if it would've been very cozy. Sigma checked out the room for a bit then he stopped once he got a look at the bed. "Oh, dear… Astro may want to look at this."
