Chapter 4: Promises Are Meant to Be Broken
"CATACLYSM!" Chat Noir cried out, bolting up onto the balls of his feet, sprinting for an attack.
Marinette giggled. "Will you ever learn, kitty? But you're right about one thing…" she said dodging his scratches. "You will be finished!"
It was now the Princess's turn to attack, and she let out more beams of energy from her palms. Chat Noir was forced to fall back slightly, quickly backflipping using one arm to be out of her range.
The girl was now getting frustrated. "You know this is your fault too, Chat Noir," she mocked, trying to get into his head.
The boy stopped for a moment, not to listen to her, but to find a way around her. "Oh yeah? And why is that, Princess?"
"You never believed in me. You left me all alone to carry both of our burdens."
Chat jumped into the air, striking her again, trying his best to ignore her. "I have no idea what you're talking about. All I've ever done was try to be a good friend to you."
"LIES!" she screamed, finally landing a hit on Chat Noir, causing him to hit the wall a couple of feet behind them. The impact was so hard, a large dent was left in his place. Chat believed his ribs were cracked if it wasn't already cracked from their battle earlier.
"You left me to be the guardian on my own!" she cried, not caring if Chat Noir would figure out Ladybug's identity. "You never helped me. I was drowning, trying to balance my civilian life and helping you save Paris, but where did that get me?" she was now yelling, completely manic, and full of rage. "For you, being Chat Noir made you free but I never asked for this. I became trapped under the constant pressure to be perfect, with everyone tormenting me. Nobody truly saw me or my pain!"
Chat Noir held his ribs, coughing from the dust beneath him, and wiped the streak of blood off his chin. He couldn't get up, it hurt too much; but Chat looked up to his partner, whose eyes were now filled with tears and bloodshot with anger. "I'm sorry, M'lady. I never meant for any of this to happen. Please, let me help you now."
Marinette's gaze softened, she almost looked as if she was about to fall apart. But instead, she raised her hand to Chat Noir, ready to deliver the final blow. "It's too late, Chat," and without hesitation, she released her beam straight into Chat Noir's chest.
Screams were heard in every direction, but only a single tear ran down the girl's cheeks. She felt numb, seeing the corpse of her best friend on the ground. Chat Noir's chest was severely burned, and she didn't want to even check if he was alive. Justice was served.
She lowered herself down to reach out to grab Chat Noir's miraculous. "I'm sorry," she whispered. Marinette took his hand, but then, he began to disappear.
Completely startled, she stumbled back. "What?! How could this be?" Princess Justice exclaimed.
While she was distracted, Carapace tackled her from behind and restrained her with his powers. The girl screamed and thrashed around, trying to escape, but he held his grip on her, kicking away the umbrella.
"NO!" she screamed.
Alya, Chloe, and Chat Noir emerged from the fog of the illusions. Chat Noir felt like his heart was being ripped out of his chest seeing her like this.
"Just apologize and say you're sorry! That's all I want. You all hurt me so bad. I can't take it! Just make it stop!" Marinette cried, heavy tears streaming down her face.
Chat Noir couldn't hold it in anymore, he broke down and embraced his lover, stroking her hair trying to calm her down.
"No, stop, no!" she yelled, squirming against his grasp.
Chat began to cry, "Marinette, I'm so sorry. I'm going to fix this, okay? It will all be alright," his voice cracking as he did his best to soothe her.
"Princess Justice, do it now!" an evil voice demanded from behind. Everyone turned and the weeping girl was suddenly filled with more power. She swung her head back to hit Carapace. His broken nose caused him to stumble back and pass out from the impact. After breaking out of his hold, she kicked Chat Noir in the chest forcing him to the ground and pinned his arms to the floor.
Hawkmoth emerged from the shadows, knocking Chloe to the ground and had her restrained by Mayura. He then grabbed Rena by the hair trapping her in between his arms and staff.
Chat Noir did his best to get out, but it was no use. "Hawkmoth, let them go, now!"
The man let out an evil chuckle. "Oh, I will. Once you give me all of your miraculous!"
Everyone was struggling against the hold of their enemies, but they were backed into a corner with nowhere to go. Out of desperation, Chat Noir looked into Marinette's eyes, which were sad and broken. "M'lady, Princess, look at me!" he begged.
The girl, a few inches away from his face, stared into his wonderful green eyes and somehow found comfort in them. "I love you," he whispered. "I love you so much. I really can't do anything without you by my side. But Mari, I need you. I knew the day you gave me your lucky charm after you beat me in that videogame, I would love you forever. So please, come back to me," the boy pleaded.
Tears stained both of the teen's cheeks, and Marinette's lips quivered in fear. Chat Noir was Adrian. Only he knew about the lucky charm. All of her wonderful memories with both Adrian and Chat Noir flooded her mind. The adorable pout Adrian would do whenever he lost against her. When Chat Noir met her parents for the first time on their "fake date." The day Adrian professed his feelings towards her, and all of her worries were meaningless with him by her side. The way his smile could make her relax and how lost she could get in his emerald eyes. Every time they saved the day, she couldn't be more thankful to have him as her lover, best friend, and partner.
She was hurting the one person she never, ever wanted to hurt. In fact, she almost killed him. What did she do? How was she going to get out of this?
Chat Noir felt Marinette's tears fall onto his cheeks, and her grip around his wrists loosen. "It's you," Mari whispered, a small smile cracking through her sadness like a ray of sun moving past the clouds in a storm.
"Princess Justice, get me the miraculous now!" Hawkmoth screamed, growing impatient.
The girl grunted, trying to overcome the negative emotion and break free from his evil grasp. Hawkmoth felt her resistance and threatened her again. "If you don't do it, I will take away your powers, and destroy everyone you love. Starting with him!"
"You can do it Marinette. You can fight this!" Chat Noir encouraged.
The girl let go of her hold on the boy, clutching her head. The power was too much; her vision began to grow dark the more she fought Hawkmoth. But then, the impossible happened. Instead of fighting it, she embraced her powers one last time.
Marinette stood up on her feet, protecting Chat Noir. She gasped in pain but controlled it as best she could. It was now a battle of mental strength between Hawkmoth and Marinette.
With that, Rena elbowed Hawkmoth in the gut to get out of Marinette's way, rushing over to Carapace.
Taking her opening, Marinette took a huge ball of energy and launched it into the floor, headed straight towards her enemy like a great wave.
Everyone took cover, but Mayura screamed. Dropping Chloe, she ran over to save her master. The mansion began to shake, and the damage was too much for the house to keep standing.
Chloe got up as quickly as she could. "Everyone, we have to get out, now!"
Rena picked up her dazed boyfriend and tried to make it to the front doors, moving as fast as she could before the ceiling collapsed.
On the other hand, Marinette just stood frozen in her place. Chat Noir began to panic and grabbed her wrist. "M'lady? Mari? Look at me please!"
The exhausted girl looked at her best friend but didn't say a word. She felt nothing. Her world was spinning.
Chat Noir saw that all the light had left her eyes and realized that they had no time to lose. He scooped her up and made sure Chloe was running in front of them. "Let's get out of here!"
The teens sprinted towards the exit, but they weren't going to make it. The house rumbled and the arch over their last exit was about to crush them.
Carapace, let go of Rena to cast a forcefield over them, granting them a few more seconds to get out. "Hurry dudes, I don't know how long I can hold it!" he cried, as his miraculous began to beep rapidly.
Chat Noir ducked under the debris and jumped outside clutching his girlfriend close to his chest, shielding her from the impact.
With one last battle cry, Carapace made his protection spell grow larger so that when he released it, both himself and Rena wouldn't get crushed.
They all fell to the ground, panting hard, their hearts running in their chests. Chat Noir loosened his grip on Marinette to assess the damage. The girl laid in his arms unconscious, but it was Marinette once again. Princess Justice was gone.
Adrian was so happy, he could cry. He got her back. She was safe in his arms once again. He kissed her forehead and held her close.
"Is everyone okay?" he asked, turning his attention back to his friends.
Both Rena and Carapace transformed back into their civilian selves but nodded. Chloe, who still looked ashamed for losing her miraculous, gave a nod as well.
He noticed that Tikki make her way out of her purse to hug Marinette's cheek. The kwami was beyond grateful that Chat Noir was able to save her wonderful Ladybug.
Alya sighed heavily. "We did it. Chat Noir, you should go transform into Mister Bug so that the miraculous will fix all of this damage and then-"
The girl was interrupted. "Don't move."
The teens looked up to the voice. It was Hawkmoth, tired and injured; only standing because Mayura held him up. They all backed up in fear. Now, he knew almost all of their identities and their kwami's were too exhausted to transform again.
Hawkmoth shoved Mayura off of him and she stumbled back in surprise. "Sir I-"
"YOU HAD ONE JOB!" Hawkmoth yelled at her in rage. "You were to keep my son safe, and you tell me he disappeared?! He is probably dead in the rubble, my wife is gone, and entire my family is dead all because of you!"
Mayura didn't dare speak up and rather looked down in shame.
Adrian, still holding Marinette protectively, began to shake. "No, it can't be…" he whispered to himself. Was Hawkmoth his Father?
His thoughts were interrupted by the beeping of his ring. He needed to get out of here, be he couldn't leave his friends in the hands of the enemy.
Hawkmoth turned his attention to the boy. "You…" he snarled, moving closer to him. "I will get all of your miraculous, even if I have to pry it from your cold, dead body!"
Marinette began to stir, and wake up. Gently, Chat Noir placed the girl onto a bed of grass, and stood up to face his father. "You'll have to get through me before getting our miraculous or my friends," he said without fear.
Then, with a green glow, he detransformed back into Adrian, and his Father dropped his staff in horror. "Adrian, it can't be!"
"I'm sorry, Father, but I will not allow you to hurt my friends," the boy stated bravely.
Hawkmoth slapped the boy with the back of his hand, and Adrian stood there stunned.
"Adrian?" Marinette muttered, still in a daze. "Don't hurt him," she added, coating her voice with venom towards Hawkmoth.
The man sneered at the small girl. "You are Ladybug, aren't you? That's why she never showed up today," Hawkmoth concluded.
All of the other teens were frozen, mouths agape, unable to process all of this information.
Hawkmoth grabbed the collar of his son and threw him to the ground away from Marinette. "You disgraceful child. I need the miraculous to save your mother. You must choose your family over your friends. I sacrificed everything for us, and if you don't obey me…" The man paused, picking up his staff and swung it in the air to catch the akuma they failed to de-evilize in the rubble. He transformed into a more powerful villain. "I will kill you, and your friends to gain the ultimate power."
Adrian couldn't move. He had never been so afraid of his Father. "No, this isn't right! If you're trying to bring Mother back, it won't work. Someone will pay the price!"
Hawkmoth was going mad. "No! The only one who is going to pay the price is you for fighting against me. But don't worry, Son. Once I bring your Mother back, I will bring you back too and we will be a family again. Don't you want that?"
Without skipping a beat, Adrian replied, "No, not like this."
His father frowned. "Such a shame. I'm sorry I have to do this. But I promise, I will bring you back," he said, raising the same purple energy beam Princess Justice had, but this time he was ready to kill the real Adrian.
The others screamed, begging Hawkmoth to stop, but Adrian couldn't hear anything anymore. The boy fell to his knees and stole a glance from the love of his love one last time. "I love you, Marinette," he said with a smile, despite the tears spilling over his cheeks.
Marinette was screaming and crying, she couldn't lose him again. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if he was gone.
"Goodbye, for now, Adrian," Hawkmoth concluded, finally releasing the ball of energy in a powerful blast.
Adrian closed his eyes, trying his best to be at peace, accepting his fate. Think about Marinette, and Plagg, and Tikki he told himself. Fun days at school with Nino and Alya. Missions with Ladybug. Her smile, her beautiful, perfect smile.
His thoughts were interrupted by Alya's cries. "NO, MARINETTE!"
His eyes shot open to reveal Marinette protecting Adrian from his Father's blast. The boy's heart stopped. Though her shoulders were moving up and down, indicating her breath, the ugly smell of smoke ran through the air.
Her arms fell to her side, and her legs collapsed beneath her. Snapping out of his shock for a moment, he caught his love, softly in his arms.
"No, no, no, no, Marinette, Princess, you have to stay with me! Can you keep your eyes open for me, please!" he asked frantically, trying to put pressure on her wounds.
Her breaths were coming out raspy and weak. In an instant, Alya, Nino, and even Chloe were by their side. Standing before the powerful villain, just as they were.
Marinette used her last bit of strength to raise her arm up to Adrian's cheek to wipe his tears. "I-I'm sorry, my love. Y-you have t-to take Tikki. I love you," she stuttered in a breathy tone.
"No, M'lady, you stay awake! Do you hear me? You're not allowed to go yet," he said desperately, but it only caused him to cry harder.
The dying girl gave her lover one last weak smile before surrendering to the wave of sleepiness that overcame her.
She knew deep down that she would love Adrian until the day she died. Turns out, she was right. She loved him until her last breath.
