Jack and Bobby sat in that bar for two hours, talking over everything in their lives and drinking their beers. It had been quite a while since they had last caught up with each other like that, without others around or a sports game they were watching distracting them. By the time they finally left, both were a little tipsy but strengthened in their resolve to make things better.
Bobby called a taxi to get him home and Jack started walking as he wasn't far from his own place. Yet, when he looked up and finally took real notice of his surroundings, he found himself walking not to his own apartment but he had reached the park near Sue's apartment where she always walked Levi. How had he not noticed that his feet had taken him there? Yes, he wanted to talk to Sue, but the idea was still terrifying to him and besides, it was close to midnight and he wasn't quite sober. He needed his wits about him if he wanted to talk to her, so he decided on the spot that he needed to get to his home again. He turned on his heels to head back when, some yards away, he spotted just the person he had been thinking of… Could he hide himself behind the next tree so that she didn't see him? But it was too late.
"Jack?" Sue called out to him and he knew he couldn't go anywhere else. He strolled to her, hands in pocket, as she and Levi walked up to him.
"Hey, Sue," he smiled as he bent forward to ruffle Levi's head and when he looked up again he rightly saw the questioning look in her eyes.
"What are you doing here?" Sue asked.
He might just as well be honest and shrugged, "I'm not sure. I had some drinks with Bobby and I intended to walk home after but I seem to have ended up here."
"You went out with Bobby and left Ally and your parents at home?"
"It's not like they haven't known each other for eons..."
Sue nodded and gave a tight-lipped smile
"Anyway, I'd better get going…" Jack added but Sue wasn't quite deterred yet.
"But why did you walk here?"
Jack grinned sheepishly, "I think I'm a little drunk, Sue. Not sure what I was doing."
Sue cocked her head to the side, studied him for a moment and then grinned back, "Yes, you do seem a little dishevelled…"
"I'm fine, I'll talk to you in the morning…" he said, finding that he seemed to be slurring his words a bit.
"It's Saturday tomorrow, we're not working unless there's an emergency."
"Maybe I'll create an emergency…" he grinned.
"Are you going to shoot someone?" Sue asked in mock surprise.
"Nah! I'll just make up a pretext to talk to you," he said and then clicked his jaws shut. He needed to be careful before he said too much.
Sue looked confused now. "You want to talk to me? About what?"
"Oh, nothing of significance, it can wait. Maybe we can do lunch or something… sometime…"
"I'd like that, but tomorrow you promised your parents you'd go to the Smithsonian with them."
"That is true."
"And Sunday they will be leaving so I assume you'll be busy then too."
"That is also true."
"So, why don't I make you some coffee to sober you up and you can tell me what you want to tell me right now."
Jack wasn't quite sure what to say to that. He blinked at her and swayed a bit.
"You seem to be getting dizzy," Sue said and then grabbed his arm and pulled him along.
"I think you need sobering up even more than talking."
Before he knew it, they were in Sue's and Lucy's apartment.
"Lucy is still out," Sue said, as she saw Jack look around. So, they were home alone, Jack surmised. How convenient.
"When will she be back?"
"Any moment now, I suspect. Sit down, Jack, and I'll get you some coffee."
"I think I'd rather have some water."
"I'll get you both" and she started puttering around the kitchen as he planted himself on the couch.
The next thing he knew he found himself waking up, lying with his feet up on Sue's couch, a blanket covering him up. How had this happened? He racked his brain and recalled putting his head back just for a moment to rest his eyes while waiting for his drinks. Had it only been a moment? He recalled women's voices… that meant Lucy must have gotten home. He vaguely remembered trying to open his eyes and not being able to and now the next thing he knew he was waking up under a blanket like this. Someone must have shifted him, put his feet up and covered him. How had he not noticed? He looked up and there Sue was, curled up in an armchair, having fallen asleep herself.
Jack slowly sat up, studying her. She looked beautiful while sleeping. He remembered with a smile how he had woken her up while they had lived together undercover, she had looked adorable then as well. How could he have fallen asleep on this woman, when he had so much to tell her, he wondered in shame?
He looked at his watch, he must have slept for two hours and he admittedly did feel better and more clear headed than when he had been traipsing around the park near Sue's apartment. He got up and walked over to Sue. She didn't look too uncomfortable but she would feel cramped when she woke up from the position she was currently sleeping in, he was sure of it. He didn't have the heart to wake her, however, and so he gently covered her with the blanket that she had given him. He tucked the corners around her shoulders and his hand was so near the soft skin of her cheek that he couldn't resist very gently touching it. His heart was full, so completely full of her, he couldn't help but stare at her for he didn't know how long. Of course, just then Sue's eyes fluttered open and he found himself caught by her gentle eyes piercing his.
