Mettaton woke up the next morning still feeling a little drained, but much better than the day before. He sat up in his bed and took in his beautiful room, designed by himself and brought into reality by Alphys. He really didn't deserve a friend like her.
His bedding was hot pink with sequins dotted about here and there, sheer black drapes framing both sides of the bed. The walls were hot pink too, and glittery, of course, while the carpet was a soft light gray. On one side of the room was his desk, covered with fan mail. Next to the desk stood a vanity littered with various makeup products. The opposite wall held a collection of Mettaton's own posters from his various shows, including those he had done when he was still using his original rectangular design. To the left of the posters was a beautiful walk-in closet, full of fashionable outfits Mettaton loved wearing when he wasn't wearing his iconic shoulder pads and heels for his shows.
Although he wasn't much of a morning person, Mettaton knew he would feel better as soon as he got dressed and glammed up for the day, so he dragged himself out of bed and carefully picked out a hot pink crop top with the words, "Bitch I am the way," scrawled on it in cursive, a pair of high-rise black shorts, and black tights. He pulled on his statement pink heels and settled down at his vanity, preparing to do his hair and makeup, always the most important task of the day.
"So, Alphys darling, what exactly are we doing today? I really don't like surprises, you know," Mettaton pouted at the breakfast table. "And there's work to be done to prepare for my upcoming shows."
"Well, um, I thought you might like to make some new friends. Like, real friends, not just a crowd of adoring fans, you know?"
Mettaton narrowed his eyes and crossed his arms. "I'm not sure how I feel about this," he said.
"Don't worry, Mettaton! I promise it'll be fine," Alphys assured him. "Undyne will be joining us and then we're going to meet up with a couple of our other friends. They're really nice, I promise! Especially Papyrus. You'll get along great."
Mettaton felt slightly ridiculous as he realized that, for once, he and Alphys had switched roles in their friendship. Normally she was the shy and nervous one and he had to coax her out of her shell.
Well, he thought, we can't have that!
Mettaton had a reputation to maintain, and he was a great people person, after all. He was always interacting with his fans. This would be no different!
"Well then, Alphys, we should get going!" Mettaton said brightly.
Alphys smiled at the return of the star's usual confident and dramatic character. "I, um, think you might want to change into something warmer," she suggested.
"Don't be silly, darling! I took great pains in picking out this gorgeous outfit and I'm warm-blooded… metaphorically speaking, I mean. I'll be just fine." Mettaton gave a dazzling grin.
"Alright, then, if you insist," Alphys laughed. "Let me just get my keys and we'll go. It's about time for us to meet up with Undyne at her house."
Mettaton felt the usual apprehension as he walked through Waterfall, dearly hoping that he wouldn't run into a certain ghost. Not that that ghost would know who he really was behind the robotic celebrity persona (at least, Mettaton hoped not), but he couldn't bear even seeing them at a distance.
Luckily, he and Alphys made it to Undyne's house without running into anyone else. Undyne, who was training outside as usual, set down her spear upon seeing them arrive.
"Hey, Alphys! Uh, hi Mettaton. How are you doing?" Undyne asked awkwardly.
Mettaton felt just as awkward, if not more. The two of them weren't close and they didn't always get along. They mostly just tolerated each other for Alphys' sake. Mettaton had never imagined that Undyne would see him during his worst meltdown.
"Well, hello there, darling! I'm feeling much better now, thank you. And… thank you for helping yesterday. Um…" he trailed off, not sure what else to say.
Undyne waved her hand dismissively. "It was nothing," she said. "I'm just glad everything is okay."
Brushing the awkwardness aside, the fish turned to Alphys and grinned widely, showing off her sharp teeth. "You guys ready to meet up with Papyrus and Sans?" she asked. "Paps said he would make spaghetti!"
"Yep!" Alphys chirped. "Let's go, Mettaton!"
Mettaton frowned, confused. "Where exactly are we going?" he asked.
"I did warn you that you might need to wear something warmer. We're heading to Snowdin," said Alphys.
"I think my circuits are going to freeze up!" Mettaton complained, shivering violently as the three monsters trekked through the snow, tiny flakes swirling in their faces.
Undyne chuckled, completely unbothered by the cold. It was heat that really got to her. "Sorry, Mettaton. We're almost there."
Alphys scurried along beside them, kept snug and warm in her thick lab coat. "I could give you my coat if you want," she offered, but Mettaton shook his head.
"There's no need, darling. I'll live. Anyway, you heard Undyne, we're almost there," said Mettaton, trying to conceal the chattering of his teeth.
The group stopped outside a beautiful two-story cabin at the edge of Snowdin, decorated with festive lights and a wreath hanging on the door. It did look very cozy, Mettaton had to admit.
Undyne knocked forcefully on the door.
Alphys turned to Mettaton. "Um, I should warn you, we didn't tell them you were coming… and Papyrus is a really big fan of yours… we wanted to surprise him."
Mettaton gave an inward sigh as he braced himself for the onslaught of crazed fangirling that he knew was shortly to come, something he got more than enough of already.
"It's alright, Alphys," was all he had time to say before the door opened.
At the door stood a tall, thin skeleton wearing a red scarf and apron over a t-shirt and shorts. "Undyne, Alphys!" he exclaimed excitedly, happy to see his friends. But there was someone else standing behind them.
Papyrus' jaw dropped. "M-Mettaton?!" He froze in utter disbelief.
Mettaton giggled at the comedic look of shock on the skeleton's face and stepped forward. "Hello, darling, it's so nice to meet you," he grinned, placing his hand on his hip and trying to maintain his suave persona despite feeling like a popsicle.
Papyrus, although awestruck, wanted to be a great host, so he swallowed his intense nervousness and stepped aside to welcome them in.
"Please, come in, all of you! The spaghetti is almost ready!"
Undyne, Alphys, and Mettaton stepped inside. Papyrus was still staring at Mettaton, and the robot started to feel slightly uncomfortable. "Papyrus, was it?" he asked, trying to initiate a conversation.
"Y-yes, the Great… I mean, Papyrus, that's me, yes!" the skeleton stuttered. He chided himself for his tactlessness and took a step towards the robot as Alphys and Undyne made their way over to the couch.
"Please forgive me for staring, it's just… you must be freezing in that outfit, as fabulous as it is! Are you alright?"
Mettaton blinked in surprise. This wasn't what he expected from the typical starstruck fan. "Well, I am just a bit cold, darling. A certain lizard neglected to mention that we would be going to Snowdin today!" He rubbed his arms.
"Here, take this!" said Papyrus as he unwrapped his red scarf from around his neck and draped it over Mettaton's shoulders. "That should help warm you up. I'll also go get you a blanket from the closet."
Mettaton smiled widely as he watched the skeleton retreat to the closet, rummaging around for a blanket. This Papyrus seemed very nice, nothing at all like what he was expecting. He joined Alphys and Undyne on the couch and thanked Papyrus as the skeleton approached him with the blanket.
"I have to attend to the spaghetti now," Papyrus apologized. "But worry not, it will be ready very soon! Sans should be here too, but I think he's still out somewhere. The one time I need him at home on the couch, he's out doing something, of course…" The words trailed behind the skeleton as he made his way back to the kitchen, from where a delicious smell was wafting.
Soon, the meal was ready, and everyone gathered around the table in the kitchen, serving themselves.
"I must apologize," Papyrus said as he went around setting the table. "I would have worn a nicer outfit had I known you were coming, Mettaton, but it seems that Alphys and Undyne wanted to surprise me!"
Mettaton grinned and winked, making the skeleton blush. "It's no problem at all, darling. You look very dapper."
Suddenly, as everyone was sitting down to eat, they heard the front door creak open, and a short skeleton in a blue hoodie made his appearance in the kitchen doorway. "Sup, everyone?"
He took one look at the glamorous robot wearing Papyrus' scarf and snorted with laughter. "Wow, you guys brought that robot? Mettabot, right? And I see you're already tight with my brother."
Mettaton huffed and stood up, arms crossed. "It's Mettaton. You'd know that if you watched my show like everyone else in the Underground. And your brother was kind enough to offer his scarf to me because I was cold."
Sans looked the robot up and down. "I can see why you were cold. Not a ton of fabric there, huh?"
"Why you—"
Alphys grabbed Mettaton's arm as he started towards Sans in anger. Undyne cackled while Papyrus watched the scene helplessly.
"Mettaton," Alphys pleaded. "Please don't mind Sans. H-he's just a bit… he's a prankster. He likes to get under people's skin. But he's not that bad, really."
"Hey, thanks Alphys." Sans nodded. "See? I'm not so bad, robot." He sauntered over to the table and joined the group, shoveling spaghetti onto his plate and pouring an ungodly amount of ketchup onto it.
Mettaton clenched his fists but sat back down. "Fine. Just don't push it, skeleton."
"Aww, but when I see a robot, I just gotta push his buttons," Sans retorted, taking a big bite of spaghetti.
Mettaton rolled his eyes dramatically and turned to his own food.
