Mila POV
I flattened out on the bed. Gosh life was exhausting. I took a short nap. It was dreamless as my alarm went off. I sent alarms for the time of days that fell asleep but wasn't meant to. I groaned.
I had to get ready. I dug in my tiny jewellery box for a long silver necklace and a thin black choker. I usually wore am intricate locket that hung low on a long chain. (That locket was important to me but you will find out why later in the story.)
I found a black string necklace and a small ruby pendant that I could link on a chain. That will have to do. After 10 hours on my feet working 5 shifts, I undressed and ran the shower hot. I slipped in. Immediately, I was encased in a vat of steam. Like a baby being swaddled in a soft comfortable blanket.
Water thundered on my face. My hair stuck smoothly on my back making it slick. An aroma of sweet tropical fruits hung in the steam. I soaked for at least 10 minutes. It was so worth it. My skin and hair smelt amazing. I moisturised and re-entered my room.
My apartment consisted of three rooms. The bathroom which was all white. It had a oval mirror and a few cupboards under the sink. Not that interesting really.
The bedroom which had a double bed with a plain black duvet. Red and blue accented the room. There was one ebony night stand which had a small library on it. Since I had one crap tv, I read a lot. An empty glass sat on a coaster awaiting for hydration. A wardrobe stood in the corner opposite the door. It had complex swirls that intertwined with each other. They were made of a deep burgundy and a navy blue. The base of the wardrobe was oak. I reminisced in the memory of first seeing this place.
It was originally a mouldy dark decomposing cockroach and rat filled apartment. But over time I had turned it into a home that didn't fit with the rest of the building. It seemed more... sumptuous than every thing else. The first time I payed rent, I had etched my initials on the back of that wardrobe. The number of years I spent here.
I snapped out of my memories and grabbed my dress and changed. It was a tight fit but it worked. I found a pair of burgundy heels. The had two straps one around the ankle, the other around the toes. A tiny silver buckle kept them from falling off.
I was doing my subtle makeup, in the bathroom, when there was a scratch at the door. Gently, it became ajar. A black cat walked in. Tuck. He was the colour of midnight except for his paws and the end on his tail. They were startling white. I had rescued his of the streets after a month of living in this building. I kept him. We had a deal. I would take care and love him if he returned the favour. And part of taking care of me was killing every living thing in the apartment that wasn't me or him. That included the rats and cockroaches that once crowded the home.
I had few people who cared about me. There was Ash, Dot and Tuck. Janet and Jeremy just wanted money although showed some concern for my well-being. I had no friends since I worked all the time. Tonight it was just me and Ash doing something for ourselves. Gifting fun.
"Hi, Tuck." I had named him Prince Tucker Boots Gray of Downtown LA. During the day, I had no idea what he did. I had presumed that he stayed with Dot but a couple months after having him she had said that he usually wondered out of the building. He always came back though.
A long soft meow came from his slim and small form. You wouldn't think such a loud noise could come from a small thing. He sprang onto the counter next to the sink. He ran under my hand twice, flattening his fur and giving pleasure. Then he lay down and played with a makeup brush absently. His bright green eyes were magical. I told him about my day not glossing over anything. I trusted him. He was the only thing in the world I trusted.
Theo POV
"Harold wait!" I yelled in the street. He turned rapidly. A grin stretched on his face.
"Need help?" He said, grinning.
"It's about the case you transferred to me." He looked at his slaves and sent them to do their own work. He sobered and took a deep breath.
"Look, I know where she will be tonight and I will explain." I nodded in agreement.
