Chapter 4: Pain
Bella's POV
My husband's sudden anger both confused and scared me. I stood up and left through the door he'd broken only seconds before. He wasn't in the waiting area although his fresh scent indicated that he'd just left.
I found him outside the hospital struggling to control his anger. I wished that Jasper was here to calm him down.
"Edward?"
He spun around so fast that it would have made me dizzy had I been human. I could see the fury in his gaze. "Edward what's wrong? Why are you so angry all of a sudden? What happened?"
He didn't say a word. He turned away from me. I grabbed his arm and forced him to turn around and look at me. "Edward what's wrong? Tell me,"
Several more seconds passed and just as I was about to ask him again he opened his mouth and said "Our daughter was gang raped,"
Shock gripped my body. Pain tore through my heart. Whatever I'd been expecting him to say it surely wasn't that. These were words no mother ever wanted to hear.
"By seven men," he continued. "When you asked her who the father of the twins were she had a flashback to the day that it all happened. I had to stand there and watch as our daughter remembered the day she was handed over to those vile men,"
"What do you mean she was 'handed over'?"
"Remember the guy that beat her up earlier?"
I nodded. How could I forget something like that?
"I don't know all the details but the reason Nessie was stealing earlier was to give him money. He needs the money in order to repay a debt. I think he's involved with drug dealers,"
That scared me.
"From Nessie's flashback I gathered that the man's name was Robert. He owed some guy named Alfonso a lot of meal and he wanted more time to repay him. So they struck a deal," he spat out the word like poison. "The deal was that if he let him borrow one of his girls he'd get that extension. So he brought Nessie and her friends to Alfonso to choose from. He picked Nessie,"
I would've thrown up if I were able to. Not my daughter. Not my baby girl. Not my little nudger.
"I've completely failed her as a father,"
"Don't say that Edward,"
"If she wouldn't have been kidnapped in the first place she would've grown up in a loving family, she wouldn't have been homeless, she wouldn't have ever met this guy, and she most certainly would've never been raped!"
I had to quickly step in and stop him from punching the wall, and maybe accidentally toppling the whole hospital in the process. "Edward I'm just as upset about this as you are but you need to calm down,"
"Why should I?!"
"For one you're sharing our daughter. Number two you if you keep acting"
out like this you're going to hurt an innocent human. Number three if you knock over a building you're going to expose us. So yes, you need to calm down before you do something you regret,"
He sighed deeply and rubbed his forehead. "You're right. But what are we going to do?"
"Right now let's go take care of our daughter and our grandsons. They might not know it yet but they need us,"
"You're right. They are what's most important right now. But they aren't going to go unpunished. Nobody lays a finger on our daughter and gets away with it,"
"Oh I agree with you on that," we would get justice for Nessie. "But right now let's take care of our family,"
Together we walked back in. "Are you sure you're not in any pain?" we heard Carlisle ask Nessie.
"Pain is no big deal to me," she answered just as we walked in.
"Nessie you can tell me the truth,"
"I am telling you the truth. I was in labor from sun up to sundown and gave birth to twins all by myself without any painkillers. If I can survive that I can survive anything,"
"Why were you by yourself? Didn't any doctors help you?"
"There's no doctor there to assist you when you're giving birth in the dirt under a highway,"
Carlisle looked every bit as horrified as I felt. "You gave birth by yourself, in the dirt, under a highway?"
"Yup,"
"Do you realize how incredibly lucky you were?"
"I don't understand,"
"So many things could've easily gone wrong and you or the babies could've died. You could've gotten an infection. Something could've happened that required immediate surgery. It scares me to think of all the things that could have happened. You are extremely lucky,"
I shuddered. I remembered my own childbirth experience with painful clarity. If I had the choice I would do it all over again though.
"It's time you get some rest Nessie," Carlisle spoke.
"Yeah but what about my babies?"
"We'll take care of them," I answered quickly. "You don't have to worry about them. They'll be safe with us,"
She looked happy. "Thank you," she said right before handing over her babies.
The ride back home was silent. But my mind felt drained from the emotions of the day. It pained me to even imagine all of the pain and suffering that my daughter had endured.
One thing was certain though. We would get justice for Nessie. I just didn't know how yet. Before I knew it we had arrived back at the house.
I walked around the house aimlessly. Until I bumped into Rosalie.
"Bella are you alright?" she asked.
"No," I shook my head. "Actually I could use your help with something,"
"With what?"
"Getting rid of rapists. My daughter's rapists,"
