Act 2: Fallen
Chapter 4
"Well this isn't great" was the first thing I heard when I woke up. "Where are we?" I said as I got up groaning."I feel like I've been hit by a train." "To answer your first question, judging from where we escaped and how dark it is here, we are probably in the Tenuem titan" the stranger said. Wait a minute, what was his name again? Right, Avalon. "As for your second question, you might want to look at your Gran" he continued. My thoughts became clearer and I remembered Gran had been shot at. I turned and saw her. "Gran!" I exclaimed. She had some burn marks and several ballistae sticking out of her. "No need to worry Hazel, it's just a mere flesh wound" she grimaced "And remember, no parting is forever" her eyes rolled in her head and her body started decaying. I was crying as Avalon held me. I couldn't think straight, I had just lost the only being that cared for me for most of my life. "Hey why are you crying!" I heard in front of me. I didn't care, I was still too sad. "Hey uh, you might want to see this," Avalon said. "Can't you give me a moment! My Gran just died!" I yelled back at him. "The voice in front of me yelled "Will you stop crying and look for a second!" I'd recognize that voice anywhere, I wiped my tears and saw a small red dragon in front of me. "Gran?, why are you so… small?" "Tada! By reverting back to one of my earlier stages, I can live again!" she said triumphantly. "So you've made yourself useless" Avalon joked. "Now look here Avalon, this isn't just something any titan can do" she snapped back. "Wait a minute, how do you know his name?" I asked. "Well you see I've needed her help a long time ago, it's complicated" Avalon replied "Oh and by the way, that Phantomi girl who was helping us? She said she was gonna scout ahead." We all heard clanging and shouting up over a hill. "Speaking of which that's probably her, do we want to help her?" Avalon asked.
"Of course we do! She saved my life" I retorted. I picked up Gran and put her in one of my bags. "Well this is different" she remarked. "Just try not to fall out of it during a fight" I said. We all hurried past the hills to see Jess fighting some monster. A hellhound I guessed. Me and Avalon drew our swords and jumped in the battle. Slashing and dodging it, we finally managed to take it down. "Phew, that was hard." I said. Jess sheathed her knives, maybe from Zero? "You guys aren't synchronized yet, you aren't fighting like a driver and blade." "I would say we fought well just now" I said "She's right, it might have worked today, but it is inefficient." Avalon replied. I turned to face him "What do you mean?" "Drivers and blades combine their strengths for a common goal between them, the deeper the bond, the more powerful they become." he explained. "I suppose I have much to learn as a driver," I said. "Luckily, I know someone near here who can train us." Jess chimed in.
Jess's perception of "near" needed some work. We had to walk for about 3 hours in the dark landscape. Jess explained that the Teneum titan was the deepest titan in the Sea of Chaos, that's why it was so dark down here. The titan had some fluorescent parts in its body that shined purple and made the landscape more enchanting. She said the reason Phantomi were so pale was because they rarely saw the sun at all, and their purple eyes were the adaptation that helped them see in the dark . She then explained the way Teneum worked. They were mostly tribal, but with a main city for trade and other common business.
"Alright, we're here!" she said "My home village.". Quickly we saw that something was wrong. "It's under attack," Avalon said, drawing his sword and jumping into the fray. Jess cursed and drew her own knives and joined him with Zero.
"What are you doing standing there?" Gran asked "Help your friends!" I unfroze and joined them. The battle lasted for quite a while, we slashed and hacked at the raiders of the village. I knocked the helmet of one of the attackers and saw that he was a Phantomi as well. "Wait a minute! They're one of your kind Jess!" I cried. "I know! Keep fighting anyway!" She replied stabbing one in the back. The attacker I knocked his helmet off tripped me and raised his sword to end me. I closed my eyes as he brought it down.
All I heard was the sword hitting something. I realised I wasn't hurt. I opened my eyes and saw Avalon with his arms outstretched making a shield made of hexagons and energy. "Are you just going to sit there while I do the work?" he grumbled. He opened the shield and slashed the man in front. Quickly realising he would be the most powerful foe in the village, the rest of them focused on him. About 5 of them charged at him, swords drawn. He moved with impossible speed and grace, slicing through all 5 of them with 5 clean strokes. This did not go unnoticed by the raiders. "Who are you!" one of them cried before he got sucker-punched by the hilt of Jess's knives. Another one of them cried "Retreat!". They all ran, some of them being cut down by some of the village's archers. "Wait Avalon," I asked, he turned around curious, "Who exactly are you, your core doesn't look like any I've ever seen. " What he said forever changed my life. He responded gravely "I am the Aegis."
