Disclaimer: I don't own Atla.
Sokka caught Aang off guard, it felt like a nightmare, if he said anything wrong now, he could ruin any chance on getting together with her. With burning cheeks, he lifted his hands up in the air, as he stuttered.
—No! Why would you say that.. I-i am.. uhh, I am a monk!
Sokka smirked at him and let a "Mhm" and before Aang could defend himself, the door opened and all eyes went on the young woman. Her usual braided hair was let down, slowly falling on the back of her soft blue dress, while her hair loopies were resting on her tanned face.
—I'm sorry for being late.
She seemed worried and her tone easily left that impression.
—It's ok, dear.
The old lady spoke with a warm smile and Katara couldn't help but also let a small one too, she looked at the table giving Sokka a confused look as why he was in her sit, but he shrugged it off and the girl just sat down near the avatar that was completely mesmerized by her beauty.
—So.. Hi? She said with a small smile, she seemed to be in a good mood.
—O-oh, hi!
Aang said cowardly and blushed slightly, he cleared his throat knowing that being nervous will only make things harder. "come on, you can do it".
—How do you like it here? She asked trying to make conversation and to make up for being moody earlier.
—It's always cold and everybody hates me, other than that, it's perfect.
He said sarcastically and sighed, making Katara giggle, which made his eye light up. Yes, he didn't exactly like The Southern Water Tribe, but he couldn't help but feel so pulled towards the waterbender near him.
—Not everybody hates you.. Ok, maybe some people, but it's because they haven't got to meet you.
The airbender thought a little of her words and spoke calmly.
—Are you one of those people?
Katara didn't expect that question and felt panic rush into her body. Yes, she found him pretty arrogant and annoying, but she could feel that he's a good person and that she can't just say "yes" to his question.
—You don't need to answer.
He said seeing her hesitation and the waterbender sighed relived, making Aang laugh.
—Well, would you like to?
The airbender decided to test the waters and said what he said with a tint of flirt in it.
—To what?
She said and started feeling nervous all of the sudden, "Come on, Katara, calm yourself. "
—To get to know me.
Her heart skipped a bit when he said that and weirdly found herself blushing at his words. She shook her head, trying to calm down and go back to her senses.
—Sure.
She just said but soon the two started talking ignoring the old people speaking about their boring stuff. Katara found herself laughing and blushing throughout all the conversation. Aang told her about his mentor Gyatso, but more about his good firebender friend, Kuzon, which he had not seen in 10 years, since the war started.
—And then me and my friend Kuzon lied that the blue ink was just blueberry pie.. And you know what they said? They didn't believe us! Like come on, I know it was a lie, but it was a good one!
Katara couldn't help but put her hand over her mouth, trying to maintain the loud laughter that was about to leave her mouth.
—Did they get mad?
She asked softly, feeling a really strong urge to put her hand on his arm, but she stopped it.
—Hm, they scolded us, but at the end of the day, they forgave us. And then we actually ate blueberry pie!
He said with a big smile, like he was proud and Katara felt warmth in her stomach and her cheeks were hurting because of how much she smiled in the past hour. If they weren't trying to keep it low because of the other people around, the water tribe girl would be on the floor laughing and like Aang said "I could do the impersonations even better, but I'm tired of hearing Pakku complain about my "lack of manners" ".
She looked into his grey eyes and felt like she was in a fantasy type world, a happy one.
—Uhh.. Katara?
He asked concerned at her zoning out, thinking something was wrong. She quickly snapped out of it.
—What?
—You were staring at me.
He said casually, feeling much more comfortable around her. It was true that he felt attracted to her the first time he saw her, but since they started talking, he saw a new side to her, at first she seemed like a closed off person that didn't like strangers, and yet now she was allowing herself to feel good around him. From her stories with her and Sokka, he learned that she was responsible and caring and that no matter what will happen, the two will always take care of each other. That made Aang really happy for some reason.
But this was wrong.
—Oh.. Sorry, I didn't realize.. I-i got caught in a daydream, y-you know how it is.
She left a small nervous smile.
—About what? About me?
A sudden wave of confidence hit him and he said that so smoothly he even impressed himself. Aang was shocked by his words and how perfectly teasingly they sounded. "oh my god, I just flirted with Katara ". Her eyes were widened out of shock and her face was burning. She decided to play it off by laughing nervously, hoping that this was most appropriate response.
Pakku couldn't help but looked constipated all of the time, being close the young avatar, he heard most of the conversation, something about the way they interacted annoyed him to bits. "how could he choose this stupid girl over us that left our homes to come here and train him!". Sokka couldn't help but let a small smile, he never saw Katara so happy, especially with someone she said it's a "complete stranger", this was perfect teasing material.
—I think we should head back to our tents.
Hakoda announced, seeing that everything finished their foods and the conversation got dry. Katara and Aang seemed the only ones disappointed by that announced, while Sokka finally felt relief.
The old people left first and Sokka sighed relived.
—Finally, if I heard one more bad joke about seals, I think I'm gonna go crazy!
—Weren't you a fan of bad jokes? His sister said teasingly.
—Bad jokes are only funny if I make them!
Sokka said in his usual tone, making Katara roll her eyes and then he smirked.
—But what about you, love-penguins?
The water tribe girl blushed and looked offended by his comment.
—We're just friends! She said and Sokka saw this as a perfect opportunity to continue teasing her, she was finally being defensive and not attacking him back.
—My sister is in love! My sister is in love!
He started chanting like a little kid, while Aang was there super red, leaning against the tent as the two were obviously fighting in front of him. His heart was beating out of his chest, starting to believe that if warrior thought she liked him, it was probably true!
Katara felt really angry at her brother embarrassing her in front of the airbender that she couldn't help but find cute, and her eyes were getting teary, but she stopped any tears from falling.
—Sokka!
She gave him a cold look and the water tribe man wished he took back his words, he realized what a sensitive topic he touched and nodded. Katara felt immediately bad at his misunderstanding, but bit her lip and looked down, finally letting a tear fall and went to her tent.
—Wait, Katara!
Aang said worried and wanted to follow her, but Sokka put his hand on his shoulder. The airbender wanted to follow his instincts so badly, but his logical side said to not to go after her. Sokka seems to know her better than anyone so he should take advice from her older brother, but his heart was yelling at him to go after her, so he took the warrior's hand out of his shoulder and ran after the girl while Sokka stood there shocked.
The avatar followed her and stopped in front of her tent.
—Can I come in?
He said and it was silence, he sighed.
—I brought you two waterbending scrolls.
Aang said again and wanted to leave, when Katara opened her tent up. She had teary eyes and looked really vulnerable. The airbender knew he didn't like being seen when he was feeling weak, so he took the scrolls and gave them to her without saying a word.
—If you ever need to talk with someone, I'm always here to listen.
He said preparing to leave and she nodded.
—Goodnight, Aang.
—Goodnight, Katara.
The avatar left her alone and went to his tent, trying to stop thinking about her. One moment she's smiling and blushing and the other she cries when Sokka brings up her being in love with him? "Am I that terrible? Does she hate me? " He couldn't help but let a few tears fall down his cheek as he bit his lip, he would never want to make her uncomfortable, yet the waterbender seemed so disgusted, it was making him sick. Aang had to push his feelings away because he couldn't stand her feeling like that, "crying because of the idea of being with him".
A/N:Alright so I finally posted and I want to say thank you for the comments, they really make me feel happy and more motivated to write.
Question: I'm thinking of adding a romantic interest for Sokka, I'm not sure yet, but what will you prefer? Sukka or Tokka (of course, Toph is 18 as well)?
EDIT: what if I do Tokka and Zuki (Zuko and Suki)?
and also, why do you think Sokka thought that "love" was a sensitive subject for his sister ?
: you'll feel even more sorry for Aang, a looot more sorry, but don't worry, this is a misunderstanding. And I'm sorry for the conversation with Sokka, but it will happen ;)
Ashely Barbosa: yeahh, Sokka really was and will be even more. Thank youu!
