It's finally here - Big thank you for your patience. This final installment rounds out the initial idea I had for life after the separation and sets up the soon coming sequel, Through the Fire. Things get a little steamy at certain points - you've been warned :)
Hope you enjoy it! XO, Reddixon
Donning, black swim trunks, Robert poured two glasses of ice water and headed out to the deck. Andy was still changing into her swimsuit. He smiled to himself as he recalled the day. It had been the perfect start to their getaway. When they got back from their beach walk, they hadn't done much of anything, lounged on the deck, stared out at the ocean and talked. It was crazy just how good it felt to be together. No rules, nothing off limits, no work and nothing to worry about. They were able to be fully present with one another. After a late dinner, they were headed to the hot tub.
He was lost in his thoughts, having one of those moments where it hit him, really hit him, that life got to be this good. He'd been alone a long time...first with his parent's death, running from home to the marines as soon as he graduated to get away from Opa, then Claire and his friend Ripley. He spent years pushing down loneliness, burying himself in his work, doing anything to keep other people at a distance, in fear that he might get hurt. But a couple near death experiences and his wife bulldozing her way into his heart and he was alive again. He felt alive again. It was both amazing and terrifying, but he was grateful. He was pulled out of his thoughts by his wife's voice.
"Falling asleep on me already?" Andy teased as she made her way into the hot tub.
"Not a chan..." Robert replied as he took in the sight of her. Her hair was tied up on the top of her head, she was barefoot and her perfectly curved body filling out the red bikini was a scene out of his wildest dreams.
Andy smiled inwardly as she got just the reaction she planned for. Robert's eyes had glazed over and he lost his words. She flashed her husband a sexy grin, "See something you like?"
"How am I supposed to resist you when you look like that?" Robert asked as Andy took a seat next to him and he wrapped an arm around her.
"Why would you be resisting?" Andy whispered as she pulled him in for a steamy kiss. She stroked the side of his face gently and held him close, getting lost in their embrace. Her head buzzed with desire and the nerve endings down her spine tingled. She pulled back slightly and tipped her head back up so she could eye her husband. Staring into his eyes, with a slanted grin. "I love you. Thank you for a perfect day."
"I didn't do anything," Robert said as he leaned in for another kiss. "And I love you too."
"Mmmm...that's sweet, but I beg to differ. Just say you're welcome." Andy replied with a small smile.
"You're welcome." Robert pulled her in close and Andy's head rested gently against his shoulder. They stayed that way for several moments.
"Okay, question for you." She looked over mischievously and Robert nodded. "What was the first thing you noticed about me when we met?"
Robert laughed. "Are you really going to make me answer that?"
Andy nudged him gently. "That bad, huh?" Andy feigned shock.
Robert pulled her in closer and returned her gentle nudge as he laughed. He was trying to find a way out of answering. "No...I just..."
"You still haven't answered." Andy gave him a look that said, "I'm waiting".
"Okay, so you're obviously gorgeous. It would be impossible not to notice that..." Andy smiled. "Next I'd say, your audacity."
"Huh?" Andy replied with a confused look.
"I was..." Robert again tried to find his words.
"An ass." Andy said with sass and humor in her voice, enjoying Robert's surprised face. "Hey, I call it like I see it. Besides, we both know it's true." She put her hands up a little in protest.
"I wasn't the most friendly...but it came from a good place. I was always firm because..." Robert countered.
Andy interrupted and gave him a knowing look. "...it saves lives. Rules save lives."
"That first day, you were the only person who had the audacity to counter me even the slightest. You spoke up, spoke your mind..." Robert smiled remembering that first day.
Andy cringed a little thinking about the underhanded comments she'd made all day about him only to realize he spoke spanish. "And hurled just a few insults your way..."
"I deserved it... a little." Robert said with a shrug of the shoulder.
"And look at us now." Andy said, leaning in so they could share a sweet kiss.
"Alright, you're in the hotseat now," Robert teased. "When did you know you wanted this?"
"Someone's not pulling any punches," Andy said with a smirk.
"You started it..." Robert served back with an unapologetic look.
"That's tough...It's hard to say when I knew for sure. I mean, we were both feeling something for a while..." Robert nodded in agreement. "We also both definitely knew it was against the rules to be anything more than friends. I think because of that, I just fought it. Tried to keep myself from taking things too far, telling myself it wasn't anything even though I knew differently." Andy chuckled at herself a little. Remembering her conversation with Maya after Ripley's memorial. "I remember Maya asking me what was going on with us after Ripley's memorial. She had seen us at the hospital. I denied it hard, but I went home that night and knew I wasn't being honest with myself. Then after the fires in LA and almost dying AGAIN, it was like what the hell..." Andy observed Robert shifting uncomfortably, but she continued. "I didn't realize how how deep the feelings went until we almost..." Her voice trailed a bit before she continued. "When I realized how hurt I was, it occurred to me that I was upset because I loved you. And I was pretty sure, you loved me too." She whispered her last sentence as she took note of her husband.
"I did..." Robert said as he shook his head. "So damn much..." It was his turn for words to trail off as he looked at his wife. It didn't make sense to still feel badly about that time in their relationship because they were together now, so much time had passed and it had all worked out, but he couldn't help the twinge of regret he felt. When she came back to him all those months ago, he told her that he hadn't meant to hurt her or push her away, but was afraid. That first time his leg seared with nerve pain, it totally caught him off guard. He had no clue what was going on, he fell back on his old behavior of isolating himself and trying to figure things out on his own.
"Hey," Andy said softly and cupped his cheek. "Don't do that."
"Do what?" He pretended not to know what she was referring to.
"Go down the rabbit trail," she replied. "We can't change the past. We both made mistakes and have regrets, but we're here now. And here is pretty damn good. That's all that matters."
"Here is pretty damn good," Robert said as he kissed the side of her forehead and pulled her closer into his side.
That next morning back in Seattle...
It was a typical day in Seattle - sprinkles the occasional peak of sunshine and back at Station 19, the A shift gathered for breakfast.
Taking a seat at the head of the table, Maya said. "Okay the memory book for Herrera and Sullivan has been uploaded and proofed. It should be back from the printer before they're back to work which is great. Job well done, team." The crew nodded, but remained a bit quiet as they continued eating. They had collected pictures of the vow renewal ceremony and made a memory book for the happy couple. The professional photos would be nice of course, but the team wanted them to have something special from them.
Ben was the first to pipe up. "Glad to hear it, Cap… I'm not gonna lie, I'm happy for the two of them, but it's still a little weird." He nervously looked around. "Anyone else?"
Dean quickly chimed in at this admission. "I second that, but they seem really happy together so I'm all for it." He knew how complicated love could be since he was still pining away for Vic.
Looking in Dean's direction, Vic gave Dean a little side eye. "I'm sure it helps that you've pulled your head out of your ass and started treating Sullivan like a human again…" It was a bit of a low blow, but everyone knew he deserved it.
"Okay, okay," Dean said as he shrugged his shoulders, " I deserved that, but I turned a corner… just took some time. Sullivan is growing on me." The team erupted into a bit of laughter at his admission.
"Well, I for one, think it's beautiful and if anyone deserves some happiness they do. They've both lost a lot." Travis stated with knowing eyes. He likely understood them better than anyone else at that table with the personal losses he'd had.
Standing, Maya said, "Agreed. They definitely deserve happiness." She meant that deeply and was so glad to see her friend happy after all she'd been through over the past year. She also had a soft spot for Sullivan, not that she would admit it. He was the one who initially encouraged her to apply for Lieutenant, went to bat for her with Ripley to keep her at 19 and ultimately promoted her. She took a look around the table and was grateful for where the team was now, things had been bumpy for a while. Taking note of Jack and how quiet he'd been, she made a note to talk with him. He had the most complicated relationship with Andy and knew he had been pretty vocal about not supporting her.
"Cap, do we know how long Sullivan has to remain a probie?" Ben asked, "The fire commission didn't say it was indefinite."
"Well, it's all up in the air and nothing is guaranteed, but if everything goes well, which I'm sure it will, they said he could start applying to move back up the ladder after a 3 month probation which likely means a transfer to another station at some point in the future." Maya replied as she checked her watch. "Alright, time for chores. Let's get this day started." The crew shuffled into the kitchen to put dishes away and get going. As she headed towards her office, she casually said, "Gibson, a word."
Jack met Maya in the captain's office...
May stood behind her desk and looked across at Jack standing in front of her. She didn't want things to be awkward, but felt like she had to address the elephant in the room. Not just as Andy's friend, but the morale of the team could be impacted. Maya knew they'd already had one blow up in the Station. "Look, I don't want this to be weird, but…"
Jack knew what Maya wanted to address before even stepping into the captain's office. He was actually surprised she had waited this long. She wasn't one to hold her tongue. He interrupted her before she could finish her thought. "You want to know how I feel about Andy & Sullivan?"
Maya nodded slightly and replied. "Yeah, something like that. You didn't make a peep during breakfast. Are you good?"
Jack smirked a bit. He knew Maya and Andy had been on the outs since she took over as captain and even though Andy had moved in while she and Sullivan were separated, he wasn't sure where things stood. He and Andy had their share of bitchfests about Maya and how she was running the team when they lived together. "Interesting question coming from you. I mean... You and Andy had a pretty big rift…"
Maya wouldn't pretend things were something they weren't, but she did believe that after the last couple months with Andy moving back in during the separation, they were getting back on track. It takes time to rebuild trust. "I admit, we're still rebuilding, but I'm her best friend, Jack. And she's mine. We both know that. I'm also aware that you've been pretty vocal about not thinking her marriage to Sullivan was the best idea."
Jack was silent for a moment as he took in her words. "Look, what Andy does is her choice. I just hope it works out for her the way she wants it to." He tried to shrug and act nonchalant, but it was clear he had his reservations.
"You're right," Maya said. "It is her choice and from where I'm sitting it does seem to be working out." She gave Jack a meaningful stare. "I know this might be hard to hear, but she is happy Jack. Really happy. And she spent a lot of nights miserable, missing her person at my apartment." Maya chuckled a little and shook her head in disbelief. "I don't totally get it, but I know love when I see it and she's very much in love with him."
"I don't want her back, Maya." Jack wanted that clear. He knew that he and Andy had a toxic relationship. Their friends with benefits situation had totally backfired. They weren't really who the other person needed in a long term relationship - despite good sex.
Maya shrugged her shoulders as she replied, "She told me some of the things you said to her."
"I'm right to be concerned," He was defiant. He didn't have anything against Sullivan. Hell, he could understand making mistakes, he'd made plenty. But there was something in him that couldn't help but think that when Andy got through processing her grief she was going to realize this was a mistake. "I've got nothing against Sullivan. He's a good guy, but I won't apologize for being concerned about a friend."
Maya took a deep breath before moving forward. "She turned down your proposal, Jack. And basically said in no uncertain terms that marriage was not for her. A couple years later she walked down the aisle. I can see why that would bother you. I'm not saying you're wrong, here. I also think — actually, I know that just like I, Maya-allergic-to-monogamy-Bishop found love, she did too. And it's the kind of thing that changes you, that makes you want something more, something different." Maya smiled softly as she thought about Carina.
Jack acknowledged her sentiments. "And you don't think this is about her dad at all?" He asked in surprise.
"Maybe some. Mostly, I think she thought about who she loved, who she felt safe with, who she wanted by her side through the ups and downs and chose Sullivan." Maya tried to convey her words with empathy. Doing so wasn't her strong suit, but it was getting better.
"Okay." Jack said a bit emotionless.
Slightly confused. Maya asked, "Okay?"
"You say she's good, I'll trust you," Jack replied. There was an uncomfortable silence between them for a moment. "I should get back to work." Maya nodded and watched as he made a hasty exit from her office. She wasn't totally sure her statements had convinced him, but hopeful they helped.
Over in the turnout closet...
Travis found his friend organizing hoses with much more focus and fury than was necessary. He took a deep breath before breaking the silence.
Walking towards Vic he asked, "Do you want to talk about it?"
Vic barely glanced back at him before continuing on with her tasks. "Talk about what?" She retorted and Travis gave her a look that spoke volumes. He wasn't buying her act and could tell she was upset.
"You were quiet at breakfast this morning." His tone was gentle with no accusation.
Vic shrugged her shoulders and feigned disinterest. "Not much to say…" Vic said nothing else to fill the silence and kept her eyes focused on the hoses in front of her.
Travis paused for a moment before putting his hand on Vic's shoulder to get her full attention. "Vic stop." She turned to face him and he could see the hurt in her eyes. "It would be totally normal to feel angry that Andy and Sullivan are getting what you and Ripley didn't."
Vic shook her head gently and looked away. "I don't know what you're talking about. I'm fine."
Not believing her for a second, Travis insisted. "You aren't fine."
"What do you want me to say?" Vic turned. Her efforts to keep her emotions in check were doing little to mask the pain flashing across her face. "That I'm angry my friend is getting her happy? Lord knows she deserves it. She's had enough heartbreak for a lifetime. No, I won't be that person."
"Vic, you being happy for Andy doesn't mean this isn't still hard for you." Travis countered gently.
Vic's hands moved to her hips and she shook her head in frustration. "Okay, you want me to say it... Yes, I am furious that 'God' (with air quotes) thought it was fair that Andy and Robert should get a wedding, a party celebrating their love, long weekends, public dates, a future together and I got an almost engagement?" She scoffed in frustration. "They get happily ever after and I'm still trying to move on." She looked back at Travis who remained quiet. "Yes, still moving on. I date and it feels good to be distracted and feel wanted, to not think about it, but it doesn't mean that my heart isn't still broken."
"Oh, Vic…" Travis whispered as he pulled his best friend in for a hug. She resisted at first before melting into his embrace and taking the comfort she needed.
Back on the Oregon Coast...
"Do we really have to get out of bed," Robert said as he kissed his wife.
Andy returned her husband's kisses, but smiled as she held her ground. "Yes… you promised me a hike and whale watching today. I'm holding you to that."
Robert pulled back slightly and smiled at his wife. She was stunning, glowing and happy. It pulled on his insides. All he wanted was for her to be happy. He would do anything to give her what she wanted. With that thought he placed one last chaste kiss on her lips. "So...we're picking this back up later."
Andy chuckled as they made their way out of bed. "Definitely picking this up later," Her voice was playful.
A short while later they made it to the kitchen dressed casually and ready for their hike. After coffee they set about making a quick lunch, filling their hydro flasks with water and throwing other necessities into a backpack. It wasn't long before they were pulling into the Ecola Point parking lot and setting out on the trail towards Indian Beach. It was a beautiful day for a hike. The mid-low sixties temps weren't chilly, but weren't too warm either. With the sun shining down and a slight breeze in the air, Andy and Robert both let themselves get lost in the relaxed feeling of the day. Neither of them were great at taking time off, but the last few days had easily reminded them of how good it felt to just be. They held hands and fell into step as they made their way through the trail. Conversation was light and easy.
"You mentioned yesterday vacationing somewhere warm and sunny. What are your bucket list travel places?" Andy asked.
"Mmmm… anywhere I get to see you in a bikini," Robert replied with a mischievous smile.
Andy laughed a little and gave Robert a slight nudge. "I'm serious. What's on your list?"
"Okay, okay… If we're talking anywhere, then I'd say maybe Greece, Spain, South Africa… Warm temps, St. Lucia, Jamaica, the Domincan Republic." Robert nodded in his wife's direction. "Now you."
"Also Spain, definitely Greece, Iceland, Brazil. Ohhh and Italy. And I guess, honestly any beach. I love ocean air and sunshine. Hawaii or anywhere in Mexico but Cancun." Andy said thoughtfully remembering a wild trip taken there in her early twenties.
"Are you an up early, sightseeing on-the-go kind of traveller or sleep late, cocktails by the pool, dance all night kind of person?" Robert asked. He had some idea but was curious to see how she'd describe herself. The trajectory of their relationship had been so different, it was fun to be learning new things about her daily.
"Good question…" She thought about it for a moment. "I think I'm a hybrid," Andy replied with a smile. "I love sleeping late, relaxing on the beach and working on my tan, but I also enjoy experiencing different cultures, seeing historical places and fun excursions."
"So we nudge Spain to the top of our vacation list," Robert said, already forming the plan in his mind. "We sleep in, see the cities, lay out on the beaches and dance the night away…" His voice trailed off a little.
"Sounds like the perfect adventure," Andy said with a wistful smile as they approached the first landing of the trail. The ocean views were absolutely breathtaking. "God, this is incredible," she said softly, standing near the guardrail. As she took in the view, she couldn't help but think about how silly it was to live somewhere so beautiful and not take advantage of it. The Pacific Northwest had so many hidden gems. Robert stood behind her, one arm wrapped around her chest, pulling her close, as her hands held onto his forearms lightly.
He placed a gentle kiss on her cheek and pierced the silence, "You do know I'd follow you anywhere." Sure the words applied to their current conversation, but they also meant something deeper.
Andy nodded her head slightly and leaned back into him as they took in the view. As he spoke those words she was reminded of the fight they never had. When he found her in the fire that took her dad, she was angry at him initially for risking himself for her, but when it was all said and done, it seemed pointless to argue after what happened. But even though they didn't discuss it, she hadn't forgotten. He had put it all on the line for her, not just his physical safety, but he'd abandon command of the scene and risked his career. He'd run into a 5 alarm fire with no back up to save her and she knew he'd do it again. He would always come for her.
They hiked 8 miles that morning. Enjoying each other's company, easy conversation and the gorgeous views. When they finally made it back to their beach house, they had lunch and picked up where they left off in bed several hours before. It was late afternoon, almost evening when Andy woke up. Robert was still sound asleep beside her. She caressed his cheek gently, before slipping out of the bed and grabbing a couple items to change into. After dressing in an off the shoulder sweater and a pair of leggings, she grabbed her journal and pen before heading out to the back deck. The sun hadn't gone down quite yet, but it was headed that way. She took in the view, breathed deeply and set about jotting down some of the thoughts running through her mind.
A while later Robert's eyes fluttered open and he instinctively reached for his wife. Instead of finding her warm, supple body, he was greeted with cool sheets. When he was fully awake and had his wits about him, he pulled the covers back and made his way out of bed. After throwing on joggers and a t-shirt he headed out to the living room. Rounding the corner he spotted Andy's small frame sitting out back. Golden locks blowing slightly in the wind, arms hugging herself, her looking off into the distance. He grabbed the warm throw from the back of the couch and made his way outside to join her. Robert threw the wrap around himself and sat behind Andy, snuggling her body into him.
Feeling Robert's warmth envelop her, Andy turned and gave her husband a sleepy smile. "Hey."
Robert pressed a kiss into the top of Andy's head and pulled her close. Wrapping them both more into the throw he replied back, "Hey."
"Incredible right?" Andy said as she stared ahead at the sunset view.
"Yes, incredible." Robert said, thinking more of his wife than the ocean view in front of him. They sat in silence for a bit before he inquired. "What are you working on?" He asked, noticing the journal and pen she had in hand.
"My therapist gave me a homework assignment." Andy said. "A no-rules journal. Something to do every day to help me get my thoughts and feelings out."
"Is it helping?" Robert asked with genuine curiosity.
"Journaling or therapy?" Andy questioned.
"Both?" Robert said. To say he'd been surprised when she let him know she was going, would be an understatement. Neither of them felt like talking about their feelings was a strong suit...at times it even felt tough to confide in and rely on one another despite knowing they were each other's safest place.
Andy thought hard for a moment before answering. "I never thought I would say this, but yes. It's definitely helping." She said plainly.
FLASHBACK
Robert and Andy via FaceTime.
"I did a thing today…" Andy chuckled uncomfortably.
"Yeah?" Robert questioned with curiosity.
"Saw a therapist...Not required by the department." Andy said with raised eyebrows.
Robert wasn't sure exactly how to respond, what the right words were. Her actions, though likely helpful, were a bit out of left field. "Why?" He asked simply, keeping the surprise out of his voice.
Andy was quiet for a moment, "If I'm being honest, I don't exactly know..." She looked down and played with the fuzz on the throw covering her legs as she rested in bed. "A few weeks back, Jack, of all people, asked me if I was talking to anyone. He's been seeing Diane since the windstorm."
"The department shrink?" Robert looked to confirm.
"Yeah..." Andy was quiet for a moment before continuing. "I didn't think much of it at the time, but later I was talking to Michelle and she made a joke about how much therapy has helped her. She was shocked that I wasn't seeing anyone after the year I've had." Andy laughed a little remembering the conversation with her cousin. They had quickly picked things right back up where they were before. Talking or texting almost everyday. "Prima no quieres volverte loca." Andy repeated her cousin's words.
Robert chuckled a little and nodded as he asked. "Well, how was it?" He knew his wife. Talking about her feelings wasn't something she loved doing nor felt good at. He also knew with everything going on, it was probably good that she had decided to talk to someone.
"It was…" Andy's eyes welled up and she went silent for a moment. "Okay I guess." She was struggling to find the right words.
Concerned and hating their distance more than ever, Robert replied in a soft voice. "Okay doesn't usually make you cry. Talk to me." He eyed her closely through the screen and his heart broke as he took in the sight of her.
Andy looked away slightly and brushed the tears that had fallen away. "It was kind of awful... I told her why I was there about just everything… She said most people run from their pain instead of facing it. When you don't acknowledge it and just try to push through you numb. But you can't numb selectively. You can never be fully present in the good moments if you aren't willing to be fully present in the dark ones. That's how it's been for me for a long time. When bad things happen I wall off, isolate and shut down so I don't feel and then I just wait long enough to be over it to start living again, but the ache is still there because I never dealt with it."
"Yeah..." Robert said in an understanding tone. He was all too familiar with what she meant. He spent years with that ache and to be honest, there were still places he was raw. Things he didn't talk about because it was just too painful.
Andy shook her head a bit. "I know what she's saying is true. But it's still… hard." More tears fell and she was frustrated. Robert listened intently, he wanted desperately to be there holding his wife as she bared her heart to him. "She said it was brave that I was there and committed to the work, but I don't feel brave. I just feel broken." Andy's voice cracked as she spoke. She felt raw, exposed and vulnerable.
"Andrea…Mi amor…look at me...you are brave, strong and resilient." Robert said slowly as they held eye contact. The ache in his heart was making it hard to breathe. "I'm sorry this is so hard. What can I do?"
Andy looked back at her husband and tried not to be angry at the circumstances keeping them apart right now. Robert's addiction wasn't his fault and she knew the separation was causing her to face her own demons as much as giving Robert time to do the same. But that didn't stop her from feeling the sadness, the distance or deep desire to be nestled into his side, feeling his strength. She took a long sigh and gave him a sad smile, "Nothing. I think this is just on me to sit with and process."
They talked a while longer, exchanged I love yous and I miss yous, then hung up. But Robert wasn't at peace. They were well into their separation and he knew they were strong. Both of them were committed to doing the work on themselves and coming back together better than ever. He also knew that one visit from him wasn't going to make or break things and if there was ever a time to throw the rule book out the window, this was it. His wife needed him. It wasn't long before he found himself picking up a stuffed bear, chocolate and a bottle of his wife's favorite wine.
Andy laid in bed in the dark. After she'd hung up with Robert, she got into the shower and cried. The release was good for her, but she couldn't help the empty feeling she had. Slipping into one of Robert's crew shirts and shorts, she climbed into bed hoping for sleep, but it hadn't come yet. Not terribly surprising, it was earlier than normal, she was just thinking she might turn on a movie when her phone buzzed.
Text from Robert: Go to your front door, there's something waiting for you.
She smiled reading the text message and threw the covers off her. Yanking open the front door she was shocked and delighted to find her handsome man staring back at her. She didn't think, just hopped into his arms and he squeezed her tightly. Immediately, her eyes pricked with tears and emotion hung in her voice, "You're here." Her words were simple, but so meaningful.
"I will always come for you." Robert breathed in the scent of his wife and followed her lead, letting her hold onto him as long as she needed. He felt her warm tears slide down his neck and held her tightly, small quakes racked her body as she cried, his heart broke again. "It's okay," he whispered softly, rubbing her back. "I've got you." Slowly, Andy found her footing, Robert cupped her tear stained cheeks, wiped them gently with his thumbs and kissed her forehead. They held one another's gaze for a moment as Andy caught her breath. It took a moment, but she eventually noticed the bag on the floor next to him.
"What's in the bag, husband." Andy said with a small smile.
"You'll have to wait and see." She eyed him curiously as Robert picked up the bag and he asked, "Are you going to let me in..."
"Of course." Pulling him into the apartment by the hand, Andy led him to the kitchen.
"Where are your roomies?" Robert asked, noticing the dim apartment.
"Maya and Carina are out on a date. If you can call it that. Take out in the hospital parking lot. I was actually in bed. Not sleeping exactly, but thinking I may watch a movie or something." Andy watched Robert move around the kitchen she shared with her friend and smiled as he found what he was apparently looking for. He pulled a single wine glass from the cabinet and opened the wine that he'd pulled from the bag. Handing her the glass, he smiled at her appreciation. "My favorite."
Digging into the bag again, Robert pulled out a bar of chocolate. "Chocolate," he said with a proud smile as Andy nodded her approval. "Okay, this last thing you have to close your eyes for."
"Seriously?" Andy asked with a hand on her hip.
Robert said nothing only gave her a look she recognized. She reluctantly closed her eyes and when he was sure they were shut tight, he pulled a stuffed brown bear out of the bag. "You can open them."
Laying eyes on the bear immediately, Andy laughed. "A bear? Robert, what am I supposed to do with a bear?"
He was happy just to see the smile on her face. Her eyes were still sad, but he could tell just him being there was helping her feel better. "Well, he's probably going to need a name if you're going to be friends. But I figure, the times you miss me or your heartaches and I'm not here, you can give him a squeeze…Obviously the real…"
Before he could finish, Andy abandoned her wine and leapt into his arms again. "You are the best."
"I love you. I hate that you're going through this and we're apart." Robert said, his frustration evident.
"But you're here now, that's what matters. I always know I can count on you." Andy grabbed his hand, her wine in the other and pulled him towards the bedroom, "C'mon, help me pick out a movie. Something action filled and distracting."
"Do you want to talk?" Robert inquired.
"Nope, I'm all talked out today. Right now, I just want you to hold me and let me feel safe." Andy spoke matter of factly despite the emotion bubbling just under the surface.
Robert slipped off his shoes and zip up hoodie, then crawled into bed with his wife. Andy nestled into his chest, their fingers interlaced. She relished in the comfort she felt. The action movie filled the screen but she barely made it through the first half. The emotion of the day and safety of being in Robert's arms was the perfect combination for sleep. Robert finished the movie, periodically glancing down at his wife. Happy to see her resting. God, he loved that woman. There was nothing in the world he wouldn't do for her. Seeing her so upset had wrecked him. It wasn't even a debate for him to stay or go. When the movie finished, he set his alarm for an hour earlier than normal and clicked off the bedside light with his wife tucked safely in his arms. "You're still here," Andy whispered with sleep in her voice as she pulled Robert's arm around her tighter.
"I'm not going anywhere," Robert said lightly as he kissed her shoulder and held her close. With that they both drifted off into a comfortable slumber, holding each other through the night. It was still dark when his alarm went off the next morning and though it was early and he was a bit tired, he didn't regret it at all. Robert slowly made his way out of bed, put his hoodie and shoes on before he heard her voice.
"Thank you," Andy whispered. She gave him a small smile.
Robert bent over, gave her a gentle kiss on the lips, "There is nowhere else I'd rather be." He gave her a small smile. "Get some more sleep. I'll see you at the station later." With that he made his way out of her place. He would head home, shower, pack his go-bag and be at the station for the start of their next shift.
BACK TO PRESENT
They were still out on the back deck, wrapped in a blanket and watching the sunset as Andy continued. "I mean...I don't know that I'll ever love the massive vulnerability hangover that I often leave my sessions with, but talking with someone who is a neutral observer, who doesn't judge me, who's able to help me figure out what's really going on under the surface has been annoyingly helpful. And I think over time I am feeling better or at least getting tools to better cope." Andy shrugged a bit and Robert nodded, letting her know he was following along. "I feel so many things at so many different times...sad, angry, grateful, confused. That's probably the biggest one right now."
"What do you mean?" Robert inquired as he rubbed her arms, feeling the chill in the air.
"I just don't know how to exist in a world where my dad doesn't. I don't know how to be this person. I knew old Andy. I understood her. The Andy who's dad was her hero, the Andy who's mom died instead of abandoning her, the Andy who's best friend was alive and hadn't taken a bullet for her, the Andy who lived and breathed her career...but I'm not her anymore. I'm this new version and I just... I feel like I'm floating sometimes. There are so many things I'm unsure about that used to be so locked in and they just aren't anymore." Andy was quiet for a moment before continuing. "Does that even make sense?"
"That makes complete sense," Robert said. "It's funny, as a kid, you think you know it all. After my parents died, I quickly realized, I didn't have a clue. Most days, I didn't know if I was coming or going. I was sad and angry, terrified about my future and to make it worse, I was trapped with Opa as my guardian. With our extended family pulling away, I felt more and more like the only person I could rely on was myself. The only thing I had control over, the only thing I could manage to make sense of was school and sports, so I threw myself into that. I don't know if there was ever a moment, even after becoming an "adult" where I felt like I had life figured out as an orphan, I just kept putting one foot in front of the other. Maybe that's all you really can do?" Robert's voice trailed off slightly at the end as he remembered his parents and thought about the young man required to grow up so quickly.
His question was rhetorical, but Andy responded anyway. "Maybe..."
"I hate that you're hurting though. And that there isn't much I can do about it. Every bone in my body, every instinct wants to protect you." Robert pulled her in closer to him and kissed her temple gently.
"I love that about you, but this is my stuff. My cross to bear." Andy leaned back into his warm embrace and exhaled.
"I don't like it." Robert's voice was soft, yet firm.
"That makes two of us," Andy whispered.
"I've gotta say though... for two people not great at the talking stuff, we're doing pretty damn good." Robert said with a small smile as he eyed his wife.
Andy turned her head up toward him and leaned in for a kiss. "I couldn't agree more."
It was just over an hour later that Andy stood eyeing herself in the bathroom. She smiled back at her reflection in the mirror. "Not bad, Andy, not bad." She grinned with pride. After a dusting of pressed powder and final swipe of mascara she was pleased with her look. Her hair hung in loose, touchable waves, her eye make up was smokey setting off her brown eyes, a light blush and nude lips finished off her sultry look.
It had been months since she and Robert had been out on a real date so she wanted to knock his socks off. The snug fit of her burgundy bodycon dress was sure to do the trick. The dress hugged her curves perfectly and the plunging v-neck showed just enough cleavage to tease, but still be classy at the same time. Andy made her way out of the en suite, slipped on her heels and grabbed her clutch.
Her mouth watered as she took in the sight of her husband. With his black slacks, black button down and blazer, Robert looked like he belonged on a GQ cover. He was facing the french doors, hands in pockets, staring out into the dark night's sky as he waited patiently for her. From this angle she had a perfect view of his broad shoulders and sculpted ass. She wouldn't lie, the man could fill out a uniform, jeans, joggers - you name it. He pretty much always looked like a tall drink of water on a hot day.
Hearing the click of his wife's heels get closer, Robert's jaw dropped as he turned around and took in the sight of his wife. "Wow, you look… Wow." He couldn't take his eyes off of her.
"You like?" Andy said in a sing-song voice as she did a little spin. She watched as Robert's eyes went wide and he looked her over from head to toe. Smiling inwardly, her mission had been accomplished. He looked ready to tear the dress off of her and she would let him do just that after dinner.
"I love." Robert whispered huskily as he pulled his wife in close to him. "You are stunning."
"Thank you... You look pretty incredible yourself." Andy said as she smoothed down the lapels of his blazer.
"How am I supposed to make it through a whole dinner and keep my hands off you?" Robert's hands brushed her arms slightly as he leaned in to place a soft kiss just below her ear. He breathed in the scent of her and willed himself into control. One look at her and he was ready to head right back to the bedroom.
"It's called delayed gratification…." Andy said as she wrapped her arms around his neck and looked up at her man. "Take me out, ply me with champagne and delicious food, dance with me and finish the night…" She couldn't complete her sentence before Robert captured her lips in a breathtaking kiss. She would have lost her footing if he hadn't been holding her upright.
Robert pulled away reluctantly, knowing they'd never make it out to dinner at this rate. "Let's get out of here before I change my mind." Andy laughed a little as they headed to the car hand in hand.
The drive to the restaurant was short and once they arrived the reservation and low occupancy had them seated quickly at a table with an ocean view. Rather than sitting across from one another they opted to sit side by side.
"We'll start with oysters," Andy told the waiting server who'd just brought their drinks. Smiling mischievously at her husband. "Actually, make that two orders. My husband has a hard time sharing." The waitress smiled at the married couple as they shared a laugh, remembering the statement he once made.
The conversation between them was fun and flirtatious. Being together the past few days had been the perfect combination of connection, meaningful conversation and romance. They both felt so much gratitude for finally arriving at a place where life seemed more calm, where they could focus on the life they were building together and their future. They knew life was complicated and hard times would likely meet them again down the road, but were enjoying the time they had now, where things were simple, where they could just be a couple in love.
"Okay, if you could have one superpower what would it be?" Andy said curiously.
"Hmmmm…." Robert thought for a moment. "X-ray vision. See through things, you know. Envelopes, walls, dresses…" he said with a smirk.
"Dresses, huh?" Andy grinned and shook her head lightly.
"What can I say… I can't be held responsible for my actions when you look like that." Robert shrugged, just as he leaned in and brushed a sensual kiss at her jawline.
"You know, when we get back to work, you're not gonna be able to look at me like that." Andy said teasingly.
"Like what?" Robert asked knowing exactly what she was talking about.
"Like you're picturing me naked." Andy's eyes shined bright as she flirted shamelessly.
"Oh please, don't make it seem like I'm the only one." Robert nudged her gently. "I've definitely seen you checking me out after the showers at the station and that was while we were both on our best behavior..."
Andy leaned into Robert's side and reached up for a kiss. "Is it my fault that you fill out a towel so well?"
"We're never going to make it all the way through dinner at this rate," Robert whispered gruffly as desire curled deep in his gut.
"That wouldn't be the worst thing." Andy whispered and held her husband's gaze.
They finished dinner...barely, but took dessert to go and headed home. The sleepy beach town they were spending the weekend in, had a beautiful upscale restaurant and other tourist attractions, but nowhere to go dancing. And Robert, knowing his wife, knew that would be the icing on the cake. They crossed the threshold of their home away from home and closed the door behind them. Andy stored their desert in the fridge, dropped her clutch and kicked off her heels while Robert synched his phone to the Bose speaker in the living room. It wasn't long before lively, upbeat salsa music filled the space.
"What are you doing?" Andy said as she heard the music and turned to face her husband.
Robert had just dropped his blazer onto the back of a nearby barstool and sported a mischievous grin, "The night's not over quite yet." He extended a hand to his wife. "Dance with me?"
Andy shook her head lightly and couldn't help the delight that took over her face. He'd outdone himself tonight, really the past few days. She wasn't sure what she'd done to deserve someone who loved her so deeply and wanted to take care of her the way he did, but she was grateful. Taking his hand, she let him pull her close and dip her ever so slightly. Raising up, she brushed a kiss across his lips and said, "Do you even have to ask." It was a rhetorical question.
Robert and Andy moved together in perfect harmony. Smooth, fluid, melodic movements poured from each one as they moved to the eight count. They were so in sync as they met each beat of the percussion instruments in the music. In dance they didn't need words. They could just let themselves feel each other. They could lean into each other deeply, be present in the joy of the moment and focus solely on one another. The passion and desire they had for one another was palpable, sending electric sparks through the air.
"What are you thinking?" Robert questioned as he held his wife. They'd been dancing for sometime and slowed things down.
Andy tipped her head back and looked up into Robert's eyes. She answered without hesitation. "That I love seeing you happy."
"I am happy." Robert replied plainly. "You're a big part of that." Andy reached up and placed a kiss on his lips.
"You know what would make me happy..." Her eyes twinkled in delight as she asked an almost rhetorical question.
"I have some ideas," Robert replied before kissing her again. They both wanted the same thing. Hand in hand, they headed to the bedroom and put the cherry on top of a perfect day.
Rainy Day...
The next morning, Andy stretched just a bit as she woke. She felt the warmth of Robert's sleeping form at her back and smiled softly to herself. Hearing the heavy rain, her eyes found the bedroom window and she was greeted by huge, billowy clouds. It was morning, but the darkness of the sky made it easily look like late afternoon. Both she and Robert were naked from the night before and tangled up in the soft white sheets. Without turning around she could tell by the relaxed sounds of his breathing that he wasn't awake just yet. Robert was typically an early riser - Andy did it for the job, but much preferred sleeping in when she could, so it was rare that she was up before him. She wanted to stay in place, just taking in the sight of him, but nature called. Slipping out of bed, she padded silently to the bathroom.
When Andy tiptoed back into the bedroom, she was pleased to find her husband exactly where she'd left him. Taking advantage of the rare moment she had to admire her husband's sleeping form, Andy slid back into bed, perched up on her elbow and enjoyed the view of his firm chest and perfectly sculpted abs. There was no denying just how much he took her breath away. She wasn't a saint, she'd had previous lovers and relationships before, but Robert pulled feelings out of her that she didn't know existed. She remembered sitting in the Captain's office at 19 telling Diane, the SFD therapist, that he undid her. Diane questioned her, made her doubt, but all this time later it was still true. Every cell of her, every fiber of her being was head over heels in love with this man.
The past few days together were ones she'd remember forever. The meaningful conversation, the intimate connection, the steamy love making...she flushed just thinking of it. It really had been perfect, but just as quickly as it started, it was winding down. Tomorrow morning they would pack up and make the drive back to Seattle, the day after that they'd return to the Station and jump back into a normal routine. She loved her job, but after months of turmoil, she was enjoying being away. Relaxing with Robert, just being together, not a care in the world, everything seemed so right. Andy was certain he had more plans for them today, but she had other ideas in mind. She straddled her husband's naked form and trailed wet open mouthed kisses from his neck to his lips. He slowly started to shift underneath her passionate assault.
Robert was pulled from sleep by wet kisses on his neck and lips. It took a moment to get his wits about him as he tried to come out of his relaxed state and simultaneously process the feeling of desire flooding his body. "Mmmm..." Robert mumbled with sleep thick in his voice. Andy said nothing, only continued. His hands found her smooth back and did their best to hang on as she licked and sucked her way down his chest. "What are you doing?" Robert asked as he leaned into her kisses and felt his morning wood rise.
"Isn't it obvious?" Andy questioned rhetorically with humor in her voice as her tongue skated across his defined abs and traced each muscle. She nudged Robert's legs open, rested between them and heard a strangled groan just as she wrapped her lips around his length and sucked him into her mouth.
Robert's fingers laced through Andy's hair, gently guiding her to exactly where he wanted her to go. He relished in every stroke of her tongue and every vibration of moans across his member. She licked, sucked and circled him and with each surge of his hips he felt himself losing control. Andy was drunk on the taste of him, the feel of him and the knowledge that she was bringing so much pleasure. She could feel his body shudder and tighten with each pass. "Andy..." he said through gritted teeth as his release ripped through him. She swallowed quickly and watched his face as he came down.
Andy kissed her way back up Robert's naked body and laid on top of him. His muscles were relaxed, but she could still feel his heart pounding in his chest. "Good Morning," she whispered with a smug satisfied grin. She looked beautiful with sultry eyes, mussed hair and flushed lips.
"Good Morning," Robert murmured as he pulled Andy to him and kissed her deeply. "Some wake up call," he said with a lazy smile.
"I aim to please," Andy retorted sassily. She remained perched on Robert's chest, her hands grazing his chest lightly. "It's raining..." She said after a few silent moments.
"Mmmhmmm..." Robert replied from his relaxed state.
She kissed his sternum and neck lightly. "I think it's a sign..."
"Yeah?" Robert replied with some curiosity.
"That we should cancel all of our outside plans today and stay in bed..." Andy's eyes twinkled as she held her husband's gaze and spoke.
In one swift motion Robert rolled them. Andy gasped in delight as she found herself tucked underneath her man. He replied in between kisses. "Whatever you want." Robert captured her mouth again and again in a fierce embrace that made Andy's core clench in response. His kiss was possessive. All-consuming. It was the kind that was impossible to resist. Her only response was to wrap her arms around Robert's neck and give herself completely over to him. She trembled with want and desire.
Robert hovered over his wife and unabashedly admired her. Her creamy skin, soft brown eyes, long lashes and full lips. She took his breath away. "You are so beautiful." His tone was soft, loving and sure. He wanted to give Andy everything, all he had, all of who he was. There was a time, he never thought he'd have this again. The love, the intimacy, the connection and yet here they were. He'd been with other women after Claire, one night stands, some dates, but no one he he could open up with or even think about spending forever with until Andy. She had completely turned his world upside down in the best way. She owned his heart.
Andy's heart sighed and her body caught fire as he trailed kisses along her lips, neck and each breast. Her body hummed as the tension built and she felt Robert's hard length against her drenched core. "I want to feel you." She panted breathlessly.
"You will," Robert replied gruffly as he kissed his way down her body.
With the first pass of his tongue at her center, Andy cried out inaudibly. His tongue slid between her folds and he licked from top to bottom, taking his time and savoring every moment of her arousal. She opened wider to him as her limbs trembled with need. Robert teased...his tongue lightly grazing over the bundle of nerves he knew were begging for attention. When he did finally stroke her tight bud, her hips rose involuntarily. "Yes..." Andy heard herself say. Writhing beneath his assault, she tried to find anything she could to hold on to. His shoulders. The sheets next to her. Anything to ground her. The pressure was building and she was close, so close. "Don't stop," she whimpered knowing her husband liked to torture her a little. It wouldn't take much to send her over the edge and she knew it. Her climax ran through her like a freight train as he thrust two fingers into her tight channel. Finding that sensitive area inside her, he caressed with bold come here strokes and it was over. She clenched around him, laid bare, and helplessly rode out the cascade of sensations overtaking her.
When he finally slid up her body, Robert cupped his wife's cheeks and captured her in a deep kiss. "That was just a warm up," he said with a grin. Andy laid boneless beneath his ripped body and absorbed every bit of pleasure he gave. She parted her legs, anxious to feel his fullness and sighed in sweet relief as inch by inch he invaded her.
Robert watched pleasure skate across Andy's face as he buried himself. Her breath coming out in choppy, desperate pants. Pulling all the way out and plunging forward again into her warmth he rocked against her setting a delicious rhythm. Their hips moved together in perfect cadence. Robert ran a smooth hand down Andy's body and when he reached her lower thigh, he hooked an arm around her knee, opening her wider. He groaned as he felt himself sink further into her heat. With one look, he saw her bite her bottom lip and smiled inwardly. This always was a tell. Leaning in further, he felt his own release nearing. He trailed wet, passionate kisses down her cheek and buried his head in the crook of her neck. With each thrust Robert felt his wife's body contract around him. "Let go," he murmured in her ear.
Teetering on the edge, Andy replied back breathlessly. "Come with me." Robert pumped into her harder, as if a man on a mission. Pulling him closer and savoring the feel of him. Andy moaned as sparks flew behind her eyes, her body tightened and she began to unravel. Back arched, toes curled, she was still determined to bring her husband with her. Swirling her hips upward she clenched around his length meeting every thrust. Robert's body convulsed, his hips rocked forward once more and he followed his wife over the edge. Their lips found each other's in a slow, deep, all-consuming kiss as they came down.
Hours later...
"Where are you going?" Andy yelled at Robert flirtatiously as his ripped naked form scooched out of the bed. Her hair was wild and messy, body tingling and cheeks rosy. After multiple rounds of lovemaking she was beyond satisfied.
"Food!" Robert retorted easily. "If you want more sex, I need sustenance to regain my strength." He flashed her a cheeky grin as he headed towards the bathroom giving Andy a perfect view of his sculpted bare ass. She swooned and groaned inwardly, silently thanking the gods that this is what she got to wake up to every day. Leaning back into the pillows briefly before throwing the sheets off, Andy headed towards the shower to join him.
It was well into the afternoon before the very in love couple stumbled out of the bedroom. Well sexed and freshly showered they set about using up the last of the groceries and made lunch. After eating and cleaning up they snuggled onto the couch to watch a movie. Robert chose and it was some action flick that Andy wasn't totally into, but tolerated because she knew this was one of his things. It was still raining, though not very hard. The deep grey clouds covered much of their ocean view. Once the movie was finished it was Andy's turn to pick their next activity. As she thumbed through the various games in the built in shelf next to the TV she stumbled upon what appeared to be a card game in a small red box.
"This one looks intriguing," Andy said as she poured over the games in front of her and pulled out the red box with white lettering. "We're Not Really Strangers, it's a game of questions... all about empowering meaningful connections."
"That sounds serious..." Robert supplied in response to her non-question.
"Afraid you can't take the heat, babe?" Andy cocked an eyebrow at him.
"I can always take the heat." Robert cooly replied.
Andy chuckled a bit, "Guess we'll see about that." She unboxed the game and dived into the directions.
They were a few rounds in, asking and answering each other meaningful questions when they stumbled upon an especially good one. Holding the little red and white card in his hand, Robert smiled a little at his wife, unsure of what she would say. "What's something you've never told anyone?" He asked.
Andy eyed her husband closely and thought quietly before answering. She'd not mentioned this before or even hinted at it... actually the complete opposite. "I've been thinking about taking some time off?" Andy replied tentatively. She was nervous even uttering the words. Thinking about it and talking about it were two totally different things.
Robert couldn't help his look of surprise. For as long as he knew Andy work was everything. He knew the past year had been hard and he thought she could use some time off to deal with everything, but he also knew his wife. Sitting still for too long made her crazy and he never suspected she'd want to press pause. Her approach, much like his, was typically more power through. Struggling to find words, "I… Hmmm… How long…"
Seeing her husband's reaction play out, she took sympathy on him. "I obviously haven't made up my mind or anything and the thought freaks me out actually - I get itchy after a few days off at home, something in me feels like I need to be working all the time, but I'm really considering it. Camila asked me how much time I took off after Ryan and then my dad...when I told her not much she asked me what I was avoiding in the rest."
"What did she mean?" Robert asked with a bit of confusion on his face.
"I asked her the same question." Andy chuckled a bit. "She said that usually when people are avoiding rest or stillness, it's because they are hiding from something. When you're constantly busy, you don't have time to really face yourself, your stuff and your truth." Andy replayed their conversation back.
Robert nodded, getting a clearer picture. "I guess that makes sense."
"She also asked me to tell her about my life outside of the station. I couldn't really do that. My life has always been the job. And I know why I am the way I am." She shrugged her shoulders as Robert listened intently. "My dad was my model for so many things - both good and bad. And knowing what I do about my mom, I get why he poured so much of himself into the station. I just…" Her voice trailed off a bit. "I think I want more." Robert looked into his wife's eyes. They were lined with emotion, but she was still so strong. He wrestled with closing the short distance between them on the couch and pulling her close or letting her continue. "Before you, I couldn't remember the last time I'd been out salsa dancing and I love to dance. Pre-pandemic, I couldn't remember the last time I went rock climbing or hiking and I love both of those things. I want to read a book that isn't about fires. I want to travel and take vacations," she says with a smile. She put her head in her hands briefly as Robert had remained largely silent during her monologue except for a few reassuring glances. "I probably sound crazy."
Not being able to take their distance any longer, Robert moved towards his wife on the couch and pulled her close. He breathed in the scent of her and kissed the top of her head. "That's not crazy. It doesn't sound crazy at all."
Andy let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. She knew her husband well enough to know that his reaction was genuine. "You don't think so?"
"No," Robert replied gently yet firmly. "One of the greatest gifts you've given me is helping me realize that being alive and living are two different things. I spent years sleepwalking. After my parents died I was so angry. Not just that they were gone, but that I would be trapped for 2 more years living with Opa. That's largely how I ended up enlisting. I just wanted to get away from him. I did everything I could to keep him at a distance." He sighed remembering his last two years of high school. "I threw myself into school and sports just so I could spend as little time home as possible. Then in the marines, they train you for just about every combat situation you might face, but they don't prepare you for all the death...for losing your brothers in war. The only way to make it through that and not lose it is to take all those feelings and shove 'em down. Keep putting one foot in front of the other. And after Claire died, I thought that just might break me. That's why I left, I had to get out of Seattle. But all the shoving down my feelings, numbing, running was keeping bad stuff out, but it was keeping out the good stuff too. And after enough time had passed, I came back...I met you. And you didn't just chip away at my walls, you brought a sledgehammer." Robert smiled softly thinking about their journey. "I started to feel things I hadn't in years. I smiled more, I laughed more, I had things I was looking forward to and I started to see just how much life I was missing out on. So no, it doesn't sound crazy."
"How do you always do that?" Andy questioned. It was part true question and part rhetorical.
"Do what?" Robert replied back simply.
"Understand me. Make me feel better." Andy said with a small smile.
Robert brushed her temple with a kiss and pulled her close. "It's part of the job description." He joked referring to his duties as husband. "And for the record... you do the same thing for me."
Later that night...
The rain had passed while Robert and Andy spent the day indoors and it had dried out just enough to get the fire pit going for smores. It was their last night at the beach before returning to Seattle tomorrow. They were headed back to reality, returning home in the morning and work the day after. Robert looked over at his wife as she stared out into the dark ocean. She was snuggled into a warm sweater, arms hugging herself gently and hair blowing in the gentle breeze. She hadn't said anything, but he could sense a change in her mood.
"You gonna tell me what's going on in that gorgeous head of yours?" Robert asked as he pulled her into his side.
Andy snuggled against Robert and her hand rested gently on his chest. "I'm not ready to go back yet." she said with a slight shrug. "The past few days have been so good." Pausing for a moment, she continued. "It's just...here...it's simple. We're just us."
"I know the feeling." Robert looked at his wife with wistful eyes. Their time away really had been a gift.
"Guess we've finally reached the honeymoon stage," Andy laughed dryly as she remembered the drama, trauma and challenges of the past few months.
"You know, I think the great thing about where we are now is that this is just the beginning. We have a lifetime of long weekends, romantic dinners, memories, sex... ahead of us." Robert said it teasingly, as he nudged her a little. "It's forever. We're forever."
Andy sighed, nestled deeper into Robert's side and listened to his reassurance. Despite feeling the chill in the ocean air she was comforted by his warmth. She thought long and hard about her past, the failed relationships, things that didn't workout, the heartbreak, the messes, her brokenness and her strength. She smiled with gratitude thinking of her stubborn streak. The thing that wouldn't let her settle for a life or love that wasn't just right, the thing that pushed her to drop her armor, open up and try even when it was scary. Because this moment, in the arms of the man she loved, was worth it. She knew without a doubt that she was done for. He was everything. Everything she didn't know she needed and more. She was completely caught up in him. Looking up into her husband's brown eyes, she smiled and whispered. "Robert Sullivan, you were worth the wait."
Huge thank you to everyone joining me on the journey and the kind comments. This has been a labor of love and I'm so excited to start sharing the sequel, 'Through the Fire'. A continuation of Andy & Robert's story as they navigate their careers, marriage, babies and other plot twists.
