six

...

After taking down the hunter, we ride on a door raft and sail away. I sit apart from him with my legs folded up to my chest, while he played with the water on the edge. The fog here is thicker, and the air chilly, making it difficult to know what lays beyond. So we merely drift afloat the murky waters with no destination, just the purpose of keeping out of danger.

"My name is Mono. How about you?"

I turn towards the boy, the one who saved me, and shake my head in response. Odd enough, he understands my gesture as he says, "That's too bad. You know, I also don't remember a lot of things. Like how I ended up in that forest."

Facing forward, I rest my chin on my tucked knees. I should be thanking him for rescuing me from that house earlier, but right now, I don't feel like warming myself to him just yet. I'm still cautious of him whether he is trouble especially when he lost some of his memories. He may seem like a good person, but I don't want to risk it. Not when I'm finally safe temporarily.

My aloofness doesn't discourage him though.

"What should I call you then?" He hums as he thinks about it until his shoulders perk up. "How about 'Six'?" he yips.

Hearing that catches my attention. I give him a questioning look - Why 'Six'? Do I look like a number to him?

"I actually don't know why either. It just sounds right and fitting," he admits with a shrug.

Staying silent, I face the front again. I hear him heaving out a sigh, which makes me feel not guilty but, rather, disappointed. The question is, why?

Is it because I'm expecting that he will give me a better name? Or because I'm expecting him to be more insistent until I give in?

I press my lips together as my fists clench unconsciously. Then I say softly, "Do what you want."

I can sense that he's brimming with happiness right now from something this shallow. Honestly, it's a mystery how he can still act so positive. It's not like we already know how to get out of this situation that we're in more so have a clue as to why this world is frightful as it is.

When I looked up, I rise on my feet as I stare at the high-rise buildings before us, all bent in one direction. They send chills down my spine, entailing more terrors for us within.

"Why does this place look familiar?" he whispers although it still reaches my ears.

Even if I have had enough of being chased around and being captured, we don't have any other options to go. With that, we depart the raft and move into the gloomy city to find out what's waiting for us there.
