A black motorcycle roared through the streets of New York, easily getting through the traffic as it turned off to a quiet road to the hospital and gave one final roar, as though announcing its arrival. The rider killed the engine, before stepping off. Rosa took off her helmet and walked into the hospital.
"Hey, I'm here to see Jake Peralta, detective Diaz." The nurse nodded and called someone through. Sharon came along and smiled.
"Detective!"

Rosa looked at her and smiled. "Hey, how's Jake? Thought I would visit him on my lunch break, so only a quick stop, got a case I'm working on."
Sharon nodded. "Of course, come on, I'll take you up to him." She lead Rosa through the hallways into the unit where Jake was. Rosa looked at Sharon.
"So..."

Sharon looked at her and smiled as they turned a corner. "I understand from your captain that you and Jake were in the academy together and always looked out for each other."
"Yeah, and I still do. It makes me so mad what that guy did to Jake. It took away his life."

Sharon stopped walking and looked at her. "Now, I'm going to stop you right there. It didn't take away his life. If it had, he would be dead and believe me, I've seen the outcome of what one punch to the head can do. Jake is lucky to be alive."
"I.. I know just-" Sharon though held up her hand.

"I know what you meant Rosa. But the fact remains.." She carried on walking and Rosa followed. "He's still here and while he might never be a detective again, he still has his life. Here we are, Jake has hydro therapy twice a week to help strengthen his muscles" Rosa nodded and followed her inside to where the pool was.

A man was in the pool with Jake. Jake was supported by a floating ring and some arm bands as he weakly kicked his legs. Rosa gulped before she spoke. No, she had to be brave and he was still alive. "Hey man." Jake shook a bit and turned his head, before giving out an excited cry and putting all his strength into his legs, moving towards Rosa.

The man laughed and swam over. "Oh so you swim for her, not for me? I'm heartbroken." Rosa looked at the staff member and smiled.
"What can I say, it's a gift." Jake laughed and took hold of the side of the pool. "Ross... Rozzz.. eh. Rozs.. Uh.. Rossa.. Rosa!" Rosa smiled and knelt down, not caring that her knees were wet.

"Hey man, how you doing? Get your own pool now? That's pretty dope." Jake grinned and pushed his legs a bit, splashing some water. Rosa smiled and splashed some water on him. Jake's laughter filled the room. He turned and looked at the man. "T-Ton.. Tony!"

Tony, who was now sitting on the edge smiled and waved. "Right over here bud, you have your chat with Rosa." Jake watched him, before looking back at Rosa. "Pl.. Pla... Play?"
"Ha!" Rosa laughed and smiled. "Wish I could Jake, but I can only stop for a while. Tell you what, next time I'm free, I'll come down here and we'll show them how great you are at swimming, okay?" Jake pouted, before he smiled at her. Rosa smiled at him.

Soon, Jake went back to his lessons, whilst Sharon showed Rosa out. She looked at her. "So, he's getting on very well."
"He's doing great. Thanks for... Everything. Sorry I was a bit curt before, it's just.." Rosa shrugged and looked away for a second. Sharon gave her a minute, before speaking.

"When I was fifteen, my brother was in a car accident. He ended up like Jake in many ways, but it seemed I was the only one who could still see that he was my brother. He wasn't stupid or like a baby or anything, he was still him but... They took him away."
"Where is he now?" Rosa asked, still looking out the window. Sharon sighed and joined her, looking out the window.

"In a much better care home than he was all those years ago." Rosa looked at her.
"I don't... None of us want Jake to end up in a care home, if it comes to that. Amy... Detective Santiago is his girlfriend, they live together and..." She sighed. "Why is it so.."
"Unfair?"
"Yeah..."

Sharon looked at her, before looking out the window. "We don't know how Jake is going to get on. He will most likely require care at some point for most of his life and it is great that he has his friends and family around him, but at the same time, we have to do what is best for his care. That is why I do my job." Rosa nodded and looked at her phone as it buzzed.

"Huh.. Looks like my case has been solved, perp handed himself in. Captain says I can take the rest of the day off." Sharon smiled at her. "We got a spare pair of trunks and t shirt in the changing room." Rosa smiled.
"Thanks Sharon. For everything." She went back to Jake.

Jake looked up as the door opened again. "Rosa!" Rosa smiled.
"Hey, captain says I got the rest of the day off, you ready to play?" Jake gasped as his hands shook, rocking back and fourth. Tony steadied him.

"Well, I think we had enough lessons for one day, time for some fun." Jake laughed happily and splashed some water around. Rosa went and changed and a few moments later, joined Jake in the hydro pool. She moved to the other side. "Come on Jake, just like when we was at the academy, catch me if you can."

Jake narrowed his eyes and looked very determined as he kicked his legs, before slowly moving to Rosa. Rosa grinned. "Those perps won't stand a chance when you get out of here Jake."

Jake laughed and breathed in heavily as he frowned a bit, before stopping. Rosa looked a him. "You okay-AH!" Jake's hand had been under the water, and had brought it up, causing a mini wave to cover Rosa's head. Jake laughed and laughed as Rosa looked at him grinning.
"Oh it's on."

Sharon and Tony laughed, watching the two friends.
