It was Thursday, and school had been in session for almost a week.
Ruby hadn't completely forgotten her quick defeat just a few days ago. The euro mark on her head didn't disappear for three day.
Now? Ruby was in class. Specifically which class? Earth World History. Ruby wasn't that surprised when she saw she had two history periods, since there are two worlds worth of history.
Ruby had to admit, she didn't find the Renaissance all that interesting. And it appeared, some of her classmates thought the same. Hell, Alex and Arthur had both shut up, scrolling their Scrolls- wait, no Ruby remembered, they called them phones on Earth.
"HOLY SHIT!" Arthur yelled, getting everyone and their mother's attention.
"No way!" Alex yelled.
"Mr. Ride, Mr. Delgado," their teacher called them out, "what is so important that you're disrupting the call?"
"PETA just turned into a terrorist organization!" Arthur yelled. That got students attention. Well, Ruby didn't understand who they were, but she could tell that whoever they were was important enough to get students talking.
"Who's PETA?" Ruby whispered to Yuri, wanting a quick summary.
"PETA is, or was, an animal rights activist group," Yuri explained. "They started small and made headway in animals right in America, but after making massive headway things got weird. Viewing Faunus as above humans, the perfect beings that could do no wrong, did weird exhibitions, throwing red paint to signify blood on fur clothes," Yuri told her.
"And that is just their tame behavior," Lorieli muttered, crossing her arms looking frustrated.
"PETA?" Sun-Hee asked. "Why them? I understood they were a tad crazy, but not insane," she raised an eyebrow, taking Alex's phone.
"Apparently, this had been something they've been planning, saying something as following the White Fang's example," Alex said. Ruby leaned over to look at the phone, seeing something on "Mass attacks".
"Alright students!" their teacher called their attention, "Calm down, you can talk about this in our next class if you want, but we still have class!" their teacher called them.
Lunch had come around, and the students of H-3 sat around their common room.
Now, Beacon allowed students from both campuses to eat at the same cafeteria, but the dorms had one thing that Beacon's cafeteria's didn't have.
A much larger option for food.
"Hey, we still got blini?" Yuri asked, looking around their kitchen.
Meanwhile, Alex and Lorielei chanting something about hamburgers. Sun-Hee making herself ramen, and Francis and Arthur arguing about which sandwich was the best, with Yu being dragged in.
And Ruby? She was just trying to sneak bread for a sandwich away from the French and British student.
"You disgusting French pig! Why would you put bananas and mayo together on a sandwich?!" Arthur yelled, trying to swipe the sandwich away from Francis, who held him away with one hand with the assistance of Yu, eating his food in the other.
"Arthur, you shouldn't judge people on their tastes in food, despite it being trash!" Yu exclaimed, holding Arthur back.
"Yankee! Back me up! You're people know a thing or two about trash food!" Arthur turned to Alex, who was in the middle of making patties.
"Okay, first, screw you," Alex said, flipping Arthur off, "Second! I don't care what people eat, as long as it doesn't kill them." he turned around, "Now, shut up, and let me make my burgers in peace."
"Bastards," Arthur grumbled. "Ruby, you agree with me?" He turned to their resident Remnant.
Ruby looked around, trying to find an out, then their eyes met.
Yuri had a fork in his mouth as he stared into her silver eyes, those puppy-like, big silver eyes. And got up, walking away.
"Traitor," Ruby was left to answer the debate between Arthur and Francis.
"Hmm, delicious, ketchup," eyes turned back to Yuri, drowning his blini in ketchup, staring Ruby right in the eyes. A had a bite sized blini caked in ketchup. His eyes never leave her.
"Yuri, don't," Arthur looked at the Russian.
Yuri put it into his mouth. A disgusted look on both Francis and Arthur's faces.
"I lost my appetite," both boys said, leaving the topic about their food choices.
"Ruby," Yuri glared at her, "you owe me," he said, going to the trash and dumping it.
"Good luck," Sun-Hee yelled across the room, "Yuri can be a real slave-driver!" she said, taking a seat. A mischievous grin on her face. Leaving Ruby worried.
Today was the day! Ruby's first day on Beacon Academy!
"Professor Goodwitch," Ruby ran to the professional Huntress. "I'm here! On time!" she said. In truth, she was actually twelve minutes early. Glynda's students hadn't even started to make their way to her class.
"Ms. Rose?" Glynda raised an eyebrow. "You know you're aware that you are almost ten minutes early?"
Ruby nodded, "Yeah, but Yuri, Arthur, and Sun-Hee, members of my unit, said to arrive early and that "If you're early, you're on time. If you're on time, you're late. And if you're late, just don't bother showing up." Which is weird, since arriving late seems better than not arriving at all. Maybe it's something about punctuality?" Ruby decided to drop the subject.
Glynda let out a low hum. She had heard various versions of the phrase before. "Well, I'm glad you're taking this seriously Ms. Rose. If you'd like, you can just go on your scroll or if you have any, work from your classes."
"Alright," Ruby offered Glynda a quick salute. Which got a small chuckle.
After a few minutes of silence, Glynda decided to make conversation.
"So, Ms. Rose, how is life with Terrans treating you? I hope your unit is taking care of you," Glynda asked.
Ruby's face lit up. "Oh, yeah my unit's been great! A bit weird if I'm being honest. I've been hanging around Alex, Arthur, and Yu a lot. Francis, Lorielei, Sun-Hee and Yuri have been helping me with my Earth history homework," Ruby recounted. Though her smile did falter. "Though I can't help but feel out of place."
Glynda raised an eyebrow, "You feel out of place? Explain."
"Well…" Ruby began. "It's weird knowing that I'm the only one not from Earth there, ya know? I mean Lorielei is half Remnant, but that doesn't really mean anything. They have to explain things that everyone understands, and sometimes they mention their old member, Neva. And then I think about the fact that I'm a replacement for her. The unit seems to miss her."
"Neva? I think I remember her, if I'm correct she left due to a leg injury," Glynda remembered. "As for your team, all you can do is give it time Ms. Rose." As she said this, the door opened with students starting to head in. "If you even want to talk, you're always allowed to talk with me or other staff."
Ruby nodded. As she looked around, she felt her confidence come back. She was excited.
Weiss and Annie hadn't resolved their issues, and Blake was still in charge, much to all of their displeasure. All Annie and Weiss could hope for was beating each other in combat. They were just waiting for Glynda to call them.
"Next, Ruby Rose and Jinhie Zhao!" Glynda called.
That got raised eyebrows from team ABWY and JNPR.
"Hey, Yang. Isn't that your sister?" Nora questioned. "What is she doing here?" she asked, looking at the young reaper rush past them to get her combat gear.
Yang nodded, explaining Ruby's circumstances, and the position she was offered from Ozpin. Ruby would spend the second half of her Thursday and Friday classes on Beacon's main campus as a student.
Down on the ground Ruby and Jinhie took center stage.
Jinhie was an entire foot taller than Ruby, and his hand seemed double the size of hers. "Jinhie Zhao," he introduced himself. Now, everything about him screamed he was from China, his weapon were tiger hook twin swords and his armor was made of a combination of leather and chainmail armor, and the only thing that wasn't Chinese was the handgun on his hip. But what shocked Ruby the most, was that even with his mainly Chinese get up, he had a thick Russia accent.
"Wait… you're Russian?" Ruby question in genuine shock.
Jinhie sighed. "Yes, half!" he said in frustration. "Long story short, father was Chinese, mother was Russian, and I was raised in a place high in Chinese immigration," his voice indicated he explained this so many times he could recite this in his sleep.
"Oh," Ruby said surprised. "Well, that's good to know. I'm Ruby, I'm from Vale," she greeted. "You ready?" Jinhie nodded.
Glynda gave the standardized announcement. As they prepared to engage in combat.
"Opposites ready?" Glynda asked, she looked, getting a nod from both students. "Alright, begin!"
Ruby and Jinhie ran towards each other. Ruby's scythe opened and Jinhie's twin swords glowed.
"Rose versus Zhao?" Annie muttered, watching as the two began their fight.
"I've seen him before," Yang said, watching as he managed to keep his distance away from the speedster. "You got eyes on him or something?" Yang teased, nudging Annie's side, offering a cheeky grin.
"Get your mind away from those thoughts Yang," Annie ground. "And no, it's just he's someone I made sure to meet with every year," Annie said, a wicked grin on her face. "He took me down in my first war, and I made sure he would always be the first I got every year." Annie began to chuckle, which soon turned into a cackle. "And I'll be able to fight him more regularly this year!" she exclaimed, unleashing her maniacal laughter.
As they continued their conversation, one member of their team grew white. Blake. She was given the position to be their temporary leader. Now, with the new information of the length of time Annie is willing to hold onto a grudge.
Down in the arena Ruby was having trouble gaining an upper hand on Jinhie. His hook swords crescent guards seemed to have been made with hard light dust, giving him an edge in defense and keeping her away, but the constant dust usage seemed to be draining his aura.
"Got to admit, you're pretty good," Jinhie said, "You're really making me work for this win."
Ruby shrugged, "Will it help if I said that I'm a little upset at my last loss?" which got a snort out of the boy.
"Not really, but yeah I saw, the video's been posted on the Beacon subreddit, really humiliating," he said to Ruby, whose expression changed to one of horror.
"Wait? It was what?!" Ruby shrieked. "And where was it? Who did it? What is Subreddit?!" Ruby questioned, zooming to the boy, fast enough to surprise him, and shake him fast enough to drop his aura a few points.
As soon Ruby stopped shaking him, Jinhie pushed Ruby away. "I'll show you, just stop shaking me!" he said.
"Oh, sorry," Ruby apologized, a light blush on her face.
"Yeah," he muttered, rolling his shoulders, putting his swords away, reaching for his gun. "Apologize if this hurts," he said, aiming his gun at her.
Ruby got a confident expression. Her Aura could take a few hits, she could block with her weapons, and her Aura was higher than his, eighty four percent against seventy two. She could take him.
He shot.
Not only did Ruby take the hit, her weapon didn't move fast enough, she didn't move fast enough. And not only did she take a hit she couldn't block, but her Aura was near gone.
Glynda started in surprise as Ruby was quickly Aura depletion. "Winner is… Mr. Zhao."
Ruby looked down, looking at the bullet that had been shot at her, it was burnt and smashed. "What…"
"Hey, you okay Rose?" Jinhie asked, holding out his hand. "I've been testing these new bullets trying to see how well they did."
"How did you do that?!" Ruby questioned. "I couldn't block that bullet! I've never seen a bullet move that fast! And to take my Aura down like that! You aren't using some Aura destroying bullets? Wait, it didn't completely get rid of my Aura, and those are illegal to get," Ruby questioned the bullet and herself trying to understand.
Jinhie raised an eyebrow. "They are just a mixture of fire Dust and gunpowder I've been experimenting with."
"Gunpowder?"
"Students, you can have this conversation later, please exit the arena so we can have our next fight." Glynda instructed them, shooing them out.
"Alright, our next opponents…"
"So, Gunpowder? Isn't that stuff just used for fireworks?" Ruby asked, her and Jinhie walking back to class.
"Yes, it is used in fireworks," he confirmed, "but it was later adapted to be used in guns," he explained.
"Oh! I just assumed you guys used something like gasoline, " Ruby muttered, a little embarrassed at her error.
"No, gasoline is a fuel. Also, why else do you think it's called gunpowder?" as Jinhie said that, two bodies ran past them, making them both wonder who was that.
"HEYA!" Annie growled.
Ruby decided to walk by Yang watched, to check in on her sister. "Hey, Yang. Meet Jinhie," she said, introducing the Russian-Chinese boy. "Jinhie, meet my older sister, Yang. And before you ask, we're related by our dad."
"Ah," Jinhie let out. He then turned to her sister. "Ni hui shuo zhong wen ma?" he asked the girl, who let out an annoyed sigh.
"No! I don't speak Chinese! Why do people keep asking me that?!" Yang exclaimed.
"You're name," Jinhie explained. "Now, what's up… oh God. It's here!"
"Hmm?" Ruby raised an eyebrow, "Oh, Annie? What about- Jinhie?" by the time she turned to see Jinhie again, he had left the room. "Jeez, what's up with him?"
"I'll explain later, right now, Annie and Weiss are really fighting." Yang said, pointing to the arena.
Inside the arena, Annie and Weiss had started destroying the place. Annie's weapon in it's glaive variant managed to crack the ground when she failed at attempting to move at fast speeds when Weiss used her glyphs to make her suddenly stop and make her fall. That isn't to say that Annie didn't get a few good hits on Weiss. When she managed to get those hits, they did a lot of damage to her Aura.
Currently they were both even at forty nine versus forty nine.
"Hello, where is Ruby?" Whitley asked, he was currently in the accompaniment of Mathew and another student, a short haired ginger boy, this was Allen Murphy, member of Whitley's unit, and the same person who Whitley managed to get upset in chapter two.
"Sup Whitey Junior, Aussie boy, Carrot top," Alex greeted.
The Irish boy growled. "Don't call me that," Allen sighed. "Whitley said his friend was here, and I wanted to meet her."
"Ruby? Oh, she's on the main campus, something to do with going to her afternoon classes, she won't be here for the afternoons for Thursday and Friday," Yu said.
"Oh," Whitley's face showed his disappointment. He wasn't upset, and while he had his unit he could associate with, he enjoyed the company of Ruby.
Yu turned to face her team mouthing something to them, which got mixed reactions, some nodding some shaking their heads, resulting in a silent argument. But in the end, those who were nodding their heads won.
"Hey, do you guys," Sun-Hee called, "Want to join us after classes? We are watching Avatar." Sun-Hee's question got nods from the Aussie and Irish boy, and a perplexed reaction from Whitley.
"Avatar? Isn't that the movie with the blue people?" Whitley asked. The reaction from the others seemed to confuse him even further. They seemed to find something funny. "What?"
"S-sorry," Alex tried to hold back laughter. "It's just every time we hear people confuse James Camron's Avatar and Nickelodeon's Avatar we laugh. But no, not the blue man one. This is Avatar the Last Airbender, a cartoon which got super popular. Still is. We've watched it numerous times."
Whitley raised an eyebrow. "You're watching cartoons? Like for kids?" Soon, Mathew covered his mouth.
"Forgive him! He does not know what he speaks," Mathew apologized. "We'll be there, with this little whit. See you later Yu!" he waved as he, Allen, and Whitley left, the last in Mathew's grip still.
Ruby had again showed up early for class, and like last time, it was ten minutes early.
"Ms. Rose!" a supersonic man, Professor-er Doctor Oobleck called to her. "Good to finally meet you! I am Doctor Bartholomew Oobleck! Please remember the Doctor! I did not earn my PhD for nothing!"
Ruby leaned back in her seat, only to get a reassuring pat on the back. A brown haired bunny Faunus. "Don't worry about him, Doctor Oobleck is just eccentric."
Ruby recognized that accent! "Hey, did you come from Australia? My friend has the same accent."
"Sorry, but I'm not," the girl apologized, "I just come from a part of Remnant with the same accent," she said. "Though, I've been told that I sound like I'm from there."
"Nothing to apologize for! Ms. Scarlatina, shares an accent with the people of Australia, like how most people of Remnant share the North American accent, and some people in Mistral share the American's southern accent! Something you should look out for, Ms. Rose!" Doctor Oobleck explained.
"R-right…"
"So, Ms. Rose! Maybe you can help me with something!" Oobleck rushed to Ruby's face again. "I've got myself in quite the conundrum! You see, I've been planning a trip to Earth for quite a while now, but I can't make up my mind on the destination!"
"Huh?" Ruby seemed surprised.
"Yes! I've even made a list of popular historical places to travel!" He said, pulling out a paper scroll, and letting it drop showed how long it was, it was like toilet paper, the paper kept going, only stopping once it got to the front of Oobleck's desk from the top of the stairs. "And as you can see, it is quite long. I've asked Ms. Scarlatina for help, but she could only help me get it this long! Since you are in a unit with seven Earthlings, I was hoping you could use your knowledge to help!"
"I-I can try," Ruby agreed.
The only problem was, Ruby didn't know what most of these places were, "The Forbidden City," and "Checkpoint Charlie."
Then, Ruby remembered something. "Wait, let me see if my friends can help!"
Ruby tapped something into her scroll and soon seven different texts appeared.
Yu- Kyoto!
Alex- Guam
Arthur- Tower of London
Yuri- The Winter Palace.
Lorelei- Go to German history Museums, you'll find many things.
Sun-Hee- South Korean national Museum.
Francis- Notre Dame de Paris.
"Got seven places," Ruby said, showing her scroll to the Profes- I mean Doctor!
"I believe I've heard of most of these places, well not Guam," Oobleck said, raising an eyebrow.
"Give me a second- wait, something is going on."
Francis- What is Guam, sounds like a fruit.
Alex- You know what it is! I told you about it! I was born there!
Lorelei- Sorry, also drawing a blank. Also how is the place you were born historical?
Sun-Hee- Oh! I love going to Guam! Me and Yu's family and mine family went there on our Winter break!
Yu- Super fun.
Alex- At least some of you remember! And Guam has historical importance! It was given to the US during the Spanish American war! It played a part in WW2!
Alex- Really! Everyone knows about Puerto Rico! The Meridian Islands! American Samoa! The Virgin Islands! But no one knows about Guam!
Alex kept up on his rant. The texts kept on coming, and they kept on reading.
"Hmm, alright!" Oobleck said, scribbling the seven names down. "Thank you Ms. Rose. Also, put your friend at ease, do my research on Guam."
"Um… right," Ruby nodded, going to take a seat by the rabbit Faunus.
"Uck-Fay Ou-yay," Alex glared at Francis, Yuri, and Lorelei.
"Yu, what is he doing?" Ruby finally got back from class, and looked at the weird argument going on.
"Uby-Ray! Ellcome-way ack-bay!" Alex waved.
"Alex is still mad at the others, and till they apologize, he will keep speaking Pig Latin," Yu explained, looking for something in a mass collection of DVD's. "He said, Fuck you, and Ruby, welcome back. I don't want to explain it the thing, so just look it up."
Pulling out the first Avatar DVD, "Now, we are planning on watching Avatar the Last Airbender, you should join us, we invited Whitley, Mathew, and another person. He's Irish."
"Oh! Cool!" Ruby said.
"Yo! We're here!" Mathew called, having come with Whitley and Allen. "Sup red! This is Allen, Allen, this is Ruby."
"I remember you," Allen said, pointing to her, "That red cape of yours is really recognizable. I'm Allen, don't call me Carrot Top."
"Who?"
Allen smiled, taking her hand and shaking it, "We'll get along quite well."
Over the next few hours the students watched Avatar, two discs of the show. And while Whitley was originally apprehensive about watching cartoons, he did enjoy it. But compared to Ruby? She was completely enamored. If she and they didn't have things like homework, she would have watched more.
In team ABWY's room things have yet to get better for Blake.
Annie and Weiss were still not getting along, the only reason why they didn't destroy their room was because they refused to talk to one another.
Lucky for her, she had a plan, and she had help.
"Yang, thank you for your assistance," the Faunus in disguise said to her partner.
The two of them were lucky they could talk in the open, Weiss and Annie had been at each other's throats all day, and had passed out due to exhausting themselves.
"Sure, no problem, them constantly fighting has been getting on my nerves a bit," Yang said. "So, Blakey, what's the plan."
"The plan starts with you never calling me that again," Blake began. "Now, let me explain."
Omaka:
It had been five days since they had begun watching Avatar, and Whitley was there for every episode, including "Tales of Ba Sing Se." And out of everyone, he was the one who cried the most.
Meanwhile in Atlas, Klein, the Schnee family butler, had taken the empty wine bottles that Willow had been drinking away. When suddenly, his scroll began to vibrate.
Now, it wasn't unusual for him to get calls from Jacque Schnee, telling him to do something when he wasn't close by, but to his surprise it was Whitley.
"Whitley?" he said, surprised by the call. "Hello?"
On the other side of the scroll he heard sniffling. Was the boy crying? That was something he hadn't heard or seen the boy do in a long time. "Whitley are you okay?"
"K-Klein," Whitley said to the butler. "I-I just want to say, I appreciate you. You were there for us, and I wanted to say thank you," he managed to say before crying even more.
On the other side of the scroll he could hear voices talking to Whitley.
"Geez, we get it, it's a sad episode! No need to get emotional," someone said to him, the scroll was taken from Whitley. "Sorry, whoever you are. Whitley just watched someone and got emotional. Sorry if he inconvenienced you," Yu said on the other side of the scroll.
"No, no, it's fine. Tell him it was much appreciated," Klein said, a happy smile on his face.
When the scroll hung up, Klein continued his duties, with a happy smile on his face. As close as he was to Weiss, he did worry for her younger brother. It was nice to see he was with people.
