It had been a week of dead ends and frustration for Penelope, and she trudged into the study with an air of defeat, plopping down into the chair and spinning it around to stare at the map they had made, trying to find a pattern out of the data there. "Why is this so frustratingly difficult?" she whinged aloud, scuffing her foot against the carpet as she tried to take a deep breath and calm herself. Shaking her head a little, she pulled out her laptop and powered it up. While that was happening, she took out her phone and checked her email, smiling a little to see Clyde's reply to her query in her inbox.
Well, I must say that this is certainly one of the more out there ideas that I've ever heard, Penelope, but I know that you aren't one to blow things out of proportion, even with your exuberant personality. I don't know what help I can be of for you, but I will be glad to allow you access to Interpol's databases when you need them. And if you ask me nicely, if one of these suspicious deaths happens in the UK, I'll allow you limited access to MI-5's databases. And if you need deeper access, I can look for what you might need. Unfortunately, my carte blanche only extends so far. I do hope that you find the unsub before too much longer. I know that this can be a bit draining, trying to hunt down someone who has been acting under the radar for so long that they're like a ghost. Let me know if you need anything else, and I will try to make it happen. Clyde
She grinned to read his words, knowing that this was exactly the sort of cooperation that she had been expecting to get from him. A small sigh of contentment escaped her lips as she set her phone aside and logged into the FBI mainframe and then went into her databases, checking in to see if her search parameters had turned up any further cases that she had previously missed. "Do you want me to start a pot of tea or coffee for you this afternoon?"
Turning, she looked up at Will and saw that he had a pensive look on his face. Getting to her feet once more, she went to the doorway and shrugged. "I think that I'm in the mood for tea, but you look like you have something on your mind."
"I do, but I want us to have something warm in our hands before we start to go over what I have to show you." She tilted her head to one side as she followed after him, smiling sweetly when Michael and Henry glommed onto her, not letting go of her as they went into the kitchen. "All right, boys, after your snack, I need you to play quietly in your room so that Aunt Penny and I can have some serious talk."
They nodded as they took a seat at the table, and Penelope watched Will put together some fruit bowls for the boys before pouring them each a glass of milk before starting their tea. She took a seat at the table across from Henry, reaching out to snag a grape from him. "Hey!"
"Sorry, kiddo."
He gave her a sharp nod before digging into his snack. The boys quickly devoured the fruit before gulping down the milk and then racing from the kitchen, talking a mile a minute between each other. "I think that we have a fresh case for our board. I wanted to read Jen into it, but with her being in San Diego, that really wasn't feasible."
"Yeah, I was hoping that they'd be home by now, but this case is dragging on. So, why do you think that this case is related to ours?"
"The clue was near the body. I made certain to take a few pictures of my own, since the only reason the police were called out to the home was due to the fact that it was a suspicious death. There were no obvious signs of trauma on the body, and for all intents and purposes, it looks like a natural death, though she will go in for an autopsy. Once I have those results, I'll funnel them to us, so that you can see if there's anything that that matches up with what we know so far. This one is really close to home, closer than the others have been."
"Yeah, right in our back yard," she murmured as she accepted the airdropped photos from Will's phone onto her tablet, calling them up and taking a look at what he had sent. "You're right, she looks as if she just went to sleep. I suppose that I should be grateful for that small mercy, since I really don't like looking at the bloodier deaths." Will nodded as she continued to peruse the crime scene, quickly homing in on the origami cat sat two feet to the woman's right. "Okay, so, weird question. I don't suppose that you happened to grab that cat from the scene?"
"No, but I do have a surprise for you. Close your eyes?"
She nodded, knowing exactly what he was driving at. Letting her eyelids close heavily, she listened to Will rustle around in his pocket before setting something on her tablet. "Am I safe to open them now?"
"Go ahead, cher," he replied, and she opened her eyes to see a pretty origami cat sitting there in an evidence bag. "I made certain that there would be no fingerprints on it, just in case you wanted to practice dusting a blank canvas."
"Thanks, Will, this will really help me out. I'll see if Anderson can help me with that tomorrow, when he comes in." Will nodded and she slipped the evidence bag into her cardigan pocket before resting her head in her hands. "Did you happen to bring home her name? I need to start working on the deep background check, to see if there are skeletons in her closet, just like with the others."
"I did," he said as the kettle began to whistle. Getting up from the table, he poured the water into two mugs before grabbing teabags and then pulling his head towards the door. She nodded as she picked up her tablet and followed him back into the office, taking a seat in front of her laptop as she dropped her teabag into the mug and then waited for Will to pass along the information that she needed. "Her name is Karolyn Otto, her date of birth is November twelfth, 1959, and she was never married and has no heirs that we know of."
She nodded as she jotted down that information, knowing that she wouldn't remember it long enough to enter it in all the different places she needed to input it. "All right, give me a little while, and I can have a few preliminary details about her background. The lilac is for deaths that happen this year."
"Ah, that's right," Will replied as he dropped the green string and picked up the lilac, cutting off a length to add to the map. "So, this is the freshest death that we've come across. I wonder if we'll find more, now that we have a pattern to look for?"
"I honestly don't know what outcome to wish for, since I don't want more people to die, but I also need more data points to go on, and I need this unsub to make any sort of mistake to give me an in. Maybe Karolyn's death will help out with that?" Will nodded, and she let out a deep sigh before looking back at her computer, seeing the first search results start to come in and knowing that she had to get down to the task at hand.
