Hungry

Enter apprehensively...

Stand, observe, conceal all dread.

Note potential quick escape routes,

Raise the bag above your head.

Disappear, despite strong protests,

Under fifteen hungry men.

Understand these men are starving,

Banish anger, count to ten.

Relinquish feeble hold on mailbag,

Really not worth fighting for.

Stumble back, away from chaos,

Lean against the barracks door.

Hear a cockney voice, triumphant,

Duck, as letters spin and fly.

Mothers, sisters, sweethearts, lovers;

All who matter most sail by.

Assume there will be some delay

Before all order is resumed;

Before each man has had his fill;

Before each word's devoured,

Consumed.
