Chapter 4

3ª P.O.V.

While her sister went for a run, Kate Williams, the younger brunette Bishop, stayed in the apartment siting on her bed working on her article. But after a while she decided to take a break and started watching a movie on Netflix.

She was almost in the middle of it when her sister Diana walked in upset. Kate asked her what was wrong and the blonde sit next to her telling her everything about her meeting with an unknown witch.

The concern for her sister's safety made Kate beg Diana not to go to the dean's party. But stating that she was not going to let her life be influenced by Peter Knox and his witches, Diana went to the party against her sister's advice.

While her sister was out in the party, Kate called her moms. Sarah Bishop answered the call.

"Hi sweetie, how are you?" Sarah questioned.

"Hi mom! I'm fine".

"Is that Katie?" Kate eared Emily asking Sarah who put the call on loud speak.

"Yes, it's me" she answered to her mother Emily.

"Is everything ok?" Emily asked worried.

"Yes, I just called because I miss you and I want to talk with you both about something".

"We miss you to, honey" the older woman said at the same time, making Kate smile "What is it?"

"Have you heard of Peter Knox?" she questioned.

"Peter Knox is in Oxford?" Emily asked.

"Yes. He found me and Diana in the Bod and he told her that he know her mother" Kate explained.

"He was crazy about her" Emily said and Sarah added "They were friends and then he started being involved with…" her mom hesitated and Kate knew it was bad "hmmm… dark magic".

With only this two words, Kate's mind was flooded with memories she prefer to forget making her throat got tight.

"I'm so sorry, honey" she heard their mothers saying.

"It's fine. I'm ok" Kate said strong ignoring her tears.

"Why is he in Oxford?" Sarah questioned changing the subject.

"He wants the book Diana found and opened in the library" Kate answered.

"Diana's parents didn't trust them" Emily said.

"Don't trust him and be very careful. He's dangerous, Kate!" Sarah advice slightly in panic.

"Don't worried. I don't trust him and I will be careful. We both are going to be" Kate said not just to calm her mom, but also because it was truth.

"I have to go, I will call you tomorrow" Kate said goodbye when she heard her sister walked in.

"Ok, sweetie. Love you. Bye" Emily and Sarah said goodbye at the same time.

"Love you too. Bye." Kate hung out.

Kate left her phone on her bedside table and went to her living room meeting Diana who looked upset.

"What happened?" she questioned.

"Peter Knox was at the party" Diana answered.

"Did he do something?" Kate asked.

"He got inside my mind and he talked with me" the blonde said.

"Are you ok?" the younger sister questioned getting closer to her sister.

"Yes. I think I did a spell and expelled him out of my head" she explained.

"I thought you didn't know any spells" Kate said confused.

"I don't" Diana agreed suppressing her sister.

Over dinner Kate told Diana about her talk with her mothers, telling her what she found out about Knox but quickly the subject was changed to something more relaxed and the sisters just talked about simple and uncomplicated things.

However the beginning of the next day wasn't relaxed or uncomplicated, Kate and Diana went to Gillian's house. Diana wanted to ask her about Kate's theory that it was a witch that told Knox about the book.

But they didn't really needed to talk, by the second Gillian opened the door, Kate and Diana saw Peter Knox in her kitchen.

Diana instantly walked away shocked with the betrayal of her friend. Kate faced Gillian and said "You traitor! She trusted you!" before she went after her sister.

She found Diana leaning against a wall crying. The younger women pulled her sister to a hug and whispered next to her ear "I'm so sorry". She might not like the friendship between her sister and the red headed but she knew how much being betrayed for some you like hurts.

"Matthew" Diana said when they separated making Kate give a small smile.

"I happy to see that you follow my advice".

The sisters went to Matthew's apartment, Diana nocked on the door but no one answered. Kate, next to a sad Diana, moved to the stairs to leave the building when Matthew showed up on the end of it, making Diana sighed with relief and Kate whispered to her sister "Told you he would be back".

Matthew invited the Bishop sisters to his apartment and they sat on the chairs in front of his desk. Diana started talking obviously nervous "You were right about creatures coming for the book. Peter Knox from the congregation and there was a Scandinavian witch that I don't know".

The vampire who was in front of a huge bookcase with his back to them requested to Diana "Try to calm down. Your adrenaline is very high".

"You can smell my adrenaline?" she asked.

"Of course I can" he answered.

Seeing how nervous her sister was and noticing the tension in Matthew's voice, Kate hold Diana's hand and start giving deep breaths which the blond imitated.

"Thank you" he said once he heard the slow heartbeat.

"Why did you come to me? The last time I saw you, you said that you never want to see me again" he questioned picking up a few letters and opening them.

"We have no one other creature to talk to" Kate explained him.

"You must have friends" Matthew insisted.

"None we can trust. It was a mistake to come here. I'm sorry I disturb you" Diana said getting up.

"No, it wasn't!" Kate disagreed getting up too and looking at her sister. She then turned to Matthew and said "Knox wants the book. He says it has the witches' first spells in it".

"Peter Knox believes that witches created everything and everyone. I'm not of that opinion" he said a little angry and then asked Diana "Did he knows you send it back?"

"Yes. He wants me to try to get it out for him again" she answered.

"Will you?" the vampire questioned again.

"I don't want him to have it" Diana said and Kate added "We are not going to cause an entire specie's extinction".

Matthew Clairmont looked at the two sisters, walked to the bookcase, picking a book and handed over to Kate.

Kate started reading the first page of the book with Diana over her shoulder. She was shocked when she realized that it was written by Charles Darwin.

"You knew Charles Darwin?" Kate questioned him.

"Yes. I meet him in many occasions, particularly when he was working on the Origins. I began to wonder how his theories may be related to us creatures" he answered to Kate with a small smile on his face.

"I was desperate to understand our origins, I already had heard rumors about a book hidden from human eyes in alchemical texts" he continued this time looking at Diana.

"Ashmole 782" Diana said.

"Ashmole. That men had an ability to find bizarre manuscripts. And I found and read them all, except 782" he told them.

"You been searching for the book since 1859?" Diana questioned fascinated and continued "How old are you?"

"Older than I look" he said mysterious.

"300 years? 500 years? Did you know Machiavelli? Survived the fall of Cartage?" Diana questioned.

"Which fall?" Matthew asked.

"I would like to show you both my laboratory. Our recent work is linked to the origin of creatures" Matthew invited the sisters and added to Kate "I believe you would find it very interesting, Dr. Williams".

Kate watched the next exchange of words between Professor Clairmont and Diana with a smile on her face, his promises of safety and he giving her sister a coat were very cute.

As promised Matthew took Kate and Diana to his laboratory. Kate on his left side and Diana on is right. They both were impressed but to Diana and Matthew, Kate looked like a child in a candy shop. The eyes of the younger sister were sparking and she had a huge smile on her face.

Kate P.O.V.

I couldn't believe in what I was seeing, Matthew Clairmont's lab was the best equipped I have ever seen. I was absolutely fascinated by it and that didn't pass unnoticed by my sister and the professor as he began to explain.

"We are among hundreds of laboratories who use genetics to understand the origin of species, but in our lab, humans aren't the only species we study".

"You are studying creatures' genetics?" I questioned impressed.

"We take physical specimens from burials mostly and extract DNA from the samples" he told me.

"That's so cool!" I exclaimed.

"Kate is writing a paper about DNA. She is absolutely brilliant at all scientific things" I heard Diana whispering to Matthew with proud in her voice, making me smile as kept touching in everything I could.

"Hey, Matthew!" an energetic voice said.

I looked up to the owner of the voice and I saw a young men, tall, with dark hair and dark eyes and a beautiful smile.

He walked in with a beautiful woman, tall, brown eyes and hair and a very serious face, which was a pretty scary.

"He was been helping me while you have been way" she said with a judge tone to Matthew, not recognizing our presence.

"Kate, Diana this is my colleague and lab manager, Dr. Miriam Shepard. Miriam this are Dr. Kate Williams and Dr. Diana Bishop" Matthew introduced us.

"If you two are sisters, why is it your last name Williams not Bishop?" the woman that I now know as Miriam asked me bluntly.

"Do you often tell your life story to people you just meet?" I questioned her back, unpleased with her question.

She raised on of her perfect eyebrows to me, but she didn't answered me. The men next to her, block my vision of her as he stand in front of me.

"And I'm Dr. Marcus Whitmore, different type of doctor. It's a pleasure to meet you" he said offering his hand with a smile.

"Nice to meet you too" I said back, smiling and shacking his hand.

Marcus introduced himself next to Diana, but as my sister shook his hand, he got closer and smelled her. I felt Matthew moving closer to my sister and looking at Marcus serious.

"Uau! AB negative! Can I take a little of your blood? It's tough to get a sample of a living witch" he asked my sis.

"No, thank you" Diana answered serious.

"If your friends aren't here to take blood, what are they here for exactly?"

"I wanted to show Diana and Kate that the work that we do here proves, beyond all doubt, that creatures are dying out" Matthew explained first talking to Miriam but finished talking to my sister.

"What? How?" I questioned.

"Vampires are falling to sire. Demons are getting closer to madness" Professor Clairmont explained.

"And witches?" Diana asked.

"Are losing their powers" Matthew concluded.

"Come and see" he invited pointing to a desk taking off is coat "Please, sit down".

I followed Matthew and Diana and saw Marcus following me. When looked at him, he just smile. Miriam was behind him with her arms crossed and an unpleasant look on her face.

I sat down next to Diana. Matthew was standing between our sets and on my right side Marcus was leaned over the desk really close to me. Miriam was in front of the desk where we were.

"This graphic shows the mitochondrial DNA of a witch called Benvenguda. She lived in Brittan in the seventh century and she was very, very powerful" Matthew explained showing us a graphic "Now compare it to the graphic belonging to Beatrice Good, Benvenguda's last descendant".

"Beatrice's has far less markers than Benvenguda's. The genes are less therefore the protein synthesis goes from 149 to 137" I noticed.

"Exactly, the less markers indicate that Beatrice's ancestors, as centuries passed, relied less and less upon witchcraft to survive. Now is this behavior of denying power the reason why witches will eventually become … extinct?" Matthew's explanation caught my attention and it made me worried because my own sister is a master on denying her powers. I wasn't the only one noticing that similarity, Diana looked at me distressed.

"What did we have in common?" I questioned curious to no one in particular, trying to chase the subject.

"What do you mean?" Matthew asked confused.

"Genetically. What do humans and creatures have in common?" I questioned.

"That's not important" Miriam said in an arrogant tone.

"Every creature has something in common with humans. Witches are basically humans with powers, demons don't have any physical powers only their brilliant mind and vampires where humans once, right?" I explained.

"So you think that we should compare every species' DNA?" Matthew questioned.

"Yes. Genetic similarities presume a similar origin" I claimed.

Matthew looked at Miriam who wasn't happy.

"It could work. I might find something not entirely useless" Miriam agreed surprising me. She walked away to work on it.

Marcus face me and said: "You're brilliant!" making me smile.

Matthew stand up and looking at me said: "Can you help us on it?"

"Sure. Absolutely" I answered excited.

Matthew accompanied me to Miriam and once again Marcus followed me. After we sat a different table Matthew gave Miriam instructions "Miriam, compare the DNA with Dr. Williams' help" "Be nice" he later added.

Miriam start pulling up the DNA images on the computer and she started comparing them while I looked at it from my sit next to her. Meanwhile, Marcus, who was next to me, leaned over my shoulder and started explaining me what Miriam was doing, speaking softly next to my ear.

One hour later, I saw Matthew and Diana getting up from the table we were before and walking towards us.

"Well, I will take Diana and Kate home. Keep working on it" Matthew said to his lab partners moving next to the table I was with Marcus and Miriam.

"I'm going with you" Marcus said getting up with me. We walked to Diana and Matthew, who had an eyebrow lifted, stopping in front of them. When Marcus saw Matthew look he said "What? There's nothing wrong with it. And the ladies don't mind, right?" he questioned me and Diana with a charming smile.

"No" me and my sister said at the same time.

Me, Marcus, Diana and Matthew walked to mine and Diana's apartment. Me and Marcus talked all the time. We were almost at my apartment when I asked him something that was making me curious.

"So, what is a doctor doing in a laboratory of genetics?" but I regret asking him as soon as I said it because his smile fell and it was replaced by a sad look "I'm sorry. You really don't have to tell me" I quickly assured.

"No, its fine. I had a friend, a human friend, James" Marcus started "He was a doctor too, a very talented one. We ended our shift and got out of the hospital. He was walking home, we had just split up, when he was hit by a car".

"I tried to sire him. But it didn't work" Marcus finished talking looking to his feet.

I put my hand on his arm and stopped walking making him stop too. He faced me when I said "It wasn't your fault, Marcus".

"He's last moments where ugly, confused and desperate and he didn't know why. I did that. He was my friend and took his dead way from him for nothing" he said looking in my eyes.

"You didn't know. You're just trying to save his life and there's nothing wrong with that" I said with confident holding his hand.

"Thank you" Marcus thanked squeezing my hand slightly. I nodded.

"We probably should go. They are looking at us" I said seeing Matthew and Diana stopped over Marcus' shoulder.

He agreed and we walked to my sister and professor Clairmont.

"Dr. Williams, could you send me your curriculum? I would like to take a look" Matthew said surprising me.

"Sure. I will emailed it to you" I said still in shock.

"Perfect" he agreed smiling.

Matthew left and Marcus went with him, but only after he kissed my cheek and said "See you later" with a smile.

Me and Diana got in our apartment and I immediately went to my room, send my curriculum to Matthew. Diana come to my room bringing me his card where his email was.

Before I click on send, I looked to Diana who was sitting on my bed and questioned "Do you think that's a good idea?"

"Absolutely. You are an amazing biochemistry, Kate" Diana remembered.

"Yea, you're right. Stupid nerves" I said has I clicked on send.

"I told Matthew how the book was" Diana told me suddenly.

"You did well. He is trustworthy" I approved and added with a smile "Besides, a romantic relationship should be based on trust".

"Kate!" Diana shout it.

"What? He's totally into you and you like him. I can see it on your face" I said innocent.

"What about you and Marcus?" she questioned.

"I just meet Marcus!" I said.

"He was very friendly to you" my sister pointed.

"He is nice. And he would be friendly to you too if Matthew wasn't all possessive with you" I said noticing my sister blushing.

"Oh my god! You're blushing" I pointed with a huge smile on my face and then singed "My little sister is in loove!"

Diana throw me a pillow and said outraged "I'm five years older than you!"

"I don't care. It's your big love story, therefore you're my little sister now" I answered grabbing the pillow.

"That don't make any sense!" Diana disagreed, probably right.

We kept talking and provoking each other during the rest of the day. It was a really amazing day where sisterhood reigned.

Sooo, what did you think? Did you like it? Did you love it?

Kate and Marcus fist meet, it was like you expected or did you think of something else? Please, tell me everything.

I swear I almost cried when I wrote Marcus talking about James to Kate. It wasn't just me right?

In the next chapter, there is much more Kate in the lab.

Please comment, I love your reviews.
