What a gloomy Monday morning, Ryota thought, as he looked out of the window and headed to his class. As he turned he recognised the same confident strut and the curtain of dark, glossy hair. His lips curled.
"Hello Miss 'I don't date good looking boys'," Ryota teased as he walked up behind her. It was unusual to see her alone. From his observations she was always with other girls.
She sighed as soon as she saw him. "Not you again."
"Seriously are you not going to give me your name?"
"How do you not know my name?" She stopped to vent her frustration. "We have a class together!"
He shrugged. "I just don't pay attention. You look a bit upset that I don't know your name. I thought I was not your type anyway."
She huffed and continued walking. This girl was too easy. Suddenly she stopped, took a deep breath and looked at him calmly.
"My name is Matsumoto. Haruka Matsumoto."
"Okay Harukachi, it's nice to—"
"It's Matsumoto-san to you, Kise-san."
"So formal. We're classmates are we not?"
"Yes, but we're not friends. And aren't going to be so—wait why are you going my way?"
Kise grinned. "I switched classes. My last one was clashing with my basketball practice."
So now he had two subjects with her. Maths and History, the one they were currently on their way together.
"You like History?" He asked trying to make conversation.
"Not now that you're in it," she said but he could see her trying hard not to smile. She went in first, grabbing a seat next to her friend Hinata. He smiled to himself and took a free seat. It happened to be next to a familiar looking girl.
"Hey... it's Ayako isn't it? Didn't we go to Teiko together?" He asked. She went bright pink and began fidgeting with her glasses.
"H-H-Hello Kise- san, y-yes we had a class together in middle school," she said just barely above whisper. Did the girl lose her voice? She wouldn't even look at him. He grinned.
"Huh, small world eh," he said and leaned back on his chair.
The teacher had began the lesson by announcing that he will be setting a short project for the term and the work had to be completed in pairs.
Ryota thought himself lucky because this girl Ayako looked like a super nerd. He'd get her to do most of the work because History was his worst subject. Along with basketball and his modelling work he just couldn't bother with school subjects.
"This year I will be choosing your partners," the teacher announced. There was small cry of dismay. Shit, Ryota thought, please let it be with someone studious. And not a guy.
"Ayako, you will be doing your project with Haru. Please switch."
He swore he heard the girl whimper. "That's a shame," Ryota said as she began to gather her things.
"Haruka, your partner for the project will be Ryota. Please take Ayako's seat."
Much to his delight he heard her cry of frustration.
As she walked over to his desk and plonked onto her seat, he said "now we're going to have to be friends, won't we?"
"I guess so," she said taking out her books. "Seriously we don't speak a word to each other for two weeks and now I can't get rid of you."
"Maybe fate wants us to to be together," Ryota said with a grin and opened his own book.
Her smile told him this was going to be an interesting project. This Monday didn't seem so gloomy any more.
