Arizona POV
It's been a week since the night at Joe's and I haven't seen Callie. Which is great cause I'm scrambling trying to find an answer to help one of the teenagers in my peds ward.
"Zona, did you figure out what we can do for our osteosarcoma patient?" Tim asked as he stands next to me in line to get lunch.
"No Timmy, I told you. I don't do bones. You're the one who chose ortho." I say making a face. Timmy looks at me and lifts an eyebrow up.
"What's gotten into you? I mean who have you gotten into?"
"Eww shut up Timmy. Nobody." I say, setting my lunch on the table.
"Dr. Torres huh?" He says elbowing my shoulder.
"Tim shut up, aren't you supposed to be figuring out how to help Jake Fisher?"
"Arizona the only thing I can think of that won't leave him in pain is just cutting it off and fitting him for a prosthesis."
"Hey guys, what you talking about?" Callie says taking a seat across of me, following Mark with his apple. I can't help but smile at her. I haven't seen her in a week, but somehow she managed to get even more beautiful.
"Do you always just eat apples? I asked Mark.
"No, of course I eat other foods, but the food here sucks." He sits up and has a look on his face. I don't really know him, but I can tell he's up to no good. "You wanna know who makes really good food?" He asked
"Yeah, tell me. I hardly cook at my loft, and I'm sick of pizza, burgers, and Chinese. So if you know where I can get something else, tell me." I say honestly.
"Callie, she makes amazing food. Don't you Callie?" Mark says elbowing Callie's shoulder.
"Markkk." She says gritting through her teeth. I decide to play along with Mark.
"Really Calliope? I guess I'm gonna have to try your cooking some time in the near future." I say taking a bite of my salad. Mark moves and leans next to me and we both look at Callie with puppy dog eyes. Callie rolls her eye at us, "You guys are so annoying, but if you really want. I'll cook for you." She says looking into my eyes. Callie is looking so deep into my eyes, I don't even know what to do.
"Yeah, okay. That sounds good." I say still looking into her eyes.
"Okay so now that we have that settled, what do you think Arizona? Should we amputate the leg?"
I'm still looking at Callie," Umm sorry what was that Tim?"
"Arizona if you can stop staring at Callie for one second. You would've heard me."
I turn towards Timmy giving him all my attention, "Ok I'm done looking at dr. Torres." I say giving her a wink. To which she laughs. "Now tell me what did you say?"
Callie POV
I'm not gonna lie, the way Arizona looks at me, has me feeling some type of way. She staring so hard it's like she pulling me in, that I can't stop looking into her blue eyes.
Then we both hear Timmy calling her, So we both turn and look at him. "Should we amputate?"
"Timmy, he's a dancer. We can't just amputate his leg." Arizona says. Wow she really cares about her patients.
"I know he's a dancer Arizona. But he's young and strong. So learning how to use a prosthetic might be better than getting a teenager hooked on pain meds, Dr. Robbins." Tim says sharply. Mark and I give each other a look. Not wanting to get in the middle of their argument.
"Look, I understand what your saying, but did you even look at another way to help him."
"No, shit. Do you think I just sat in my office all day twiddling my thumbs? Come on Arizona."
I could tell Arizona was shocked from Timothy's outburst. She scoots her chair back and turns her entire body to face him crossing her arms, "I don't know what you were doing in your office Dr. Robbins, and frankly I don't give a damn. But what I do know is that I was looking for an answer. And You wanna know what I found Dr. Robbins? What I found was that there was a story on the news recently, where they used a cadaver bone to replace a cancerous one." She says snapping at Timothy.
"Arizo-"
"No, Dr. Robbins I don't want to hear it. Page me after you read the study. Then you can come to me with your decision on what you think is best."
She looks at Mark and I, "Sorry about that, but I need to go. I have patients."
Mark and I just nod our heads not sure what to say. Arizona walks away, and everyone is speechless.
"Wow, she's hardcore." Mark says.
"You have no idea. Try growing up with her." Timothy chuckles. "I'm sorry about that. I didn't mean for you guys to witness that."
"Is she gonna be okay?" I asked finally speaking up.
"Yeah, she'll be fine. Don't worry about it, just give her a minute. She'll get over it." Timothy says.
Arizona POV
I get a page from Timmy to meet him by the nurses station.
"So what did you decide?"
"Arizona, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you."
"Well you did Timmy, and I don't care surgeons get into arguments all the time. But don't you dare and try to embarrass me in front of my colleagues."
"Arizona I'm sorry. Do you know how hard it is being your brother? I didn't tell anyone you were my sister till you got here. Everyone is always all over you, and praising you. So yes I got jealous and snapped, which was pointless cause you still showed me up."
"Timothy I'm sorry, I never thought about that. You're an awesome doctor. One of the best on this side of the country. Hell you're head of your own department. You wanna know why I'm so good at my job? It's because I don't focus on what others are doing. I stay in my lane. So instead of focusing on me. How about you focus on yourself. I'm telling you it would make a world of a difference."
"Why do I have the best sister in the world?." He says pulling me into a hug.
"Okay, enough of that. So what did you decide?"
"So I read the article and I think it's the only shot he has besides amputation. Then I went ahead and searched for a cadaver bone, but there's no match for Jake. So I was thinking instead of that. Let's take his bone and hit it with high doses of radiation to kill the cancer. 30 minutes later, we reinsert his bone into Jake's leg."
"You think that's a good idea?"
"I think getting a cadaver bone is a good idea, but we don't have one. So this is what it has to be."
"Okay, let's present this plan to his parents and see what they decide."
After we explain the plan to his parents, they had a few questions.
"So there's a chance his cancer could come back?"
"Yes Mrs. Fisher. There is a chance it can come back, that's why amputation is less risky. But if you agree, we will monitor Jake closely. Scans every few months, and if this doesn't work. We will have to amputate." Timothy explained.
"Has this been done before?"
"I have to be honest. It's been done a few times. Only with cadaver bones, but since there's no match for Jake. We have to use his bone. It's a huge risk, so that's up to you. We will leave you guys to talk and make a decision."
After 10 minutes of discussing, they came up with the agreement to do the procedure. They said it was worth the risk, which I could agree with.
"So a doctor will be in here to prep him for surgery. Take your time. Jake me and Dr. Robbins will see you down in the OR." My brother says to his patient.
The surgery went flawlessly. As we scrub out my brother leans against the sink. "Really Arizona what's going on with you and Callie?"
"Timothy I don't want to have this talk with you?" I say grabbing a paper towel to dry my hands.
"Really?" He says tiltling his head.
"Okay, I think she's gorgeous, and brilliant. I can't stop looking at her. Is that what you want me to say?"
"Yeah, something like that." He chuckled. "I think you should tell her."
"I don't think so Timmy. I just moved here, and I don't really know her."
"That's why you get to know her Zona, and for what it's worth. I think she feels the same way as you."
"Yeah we see, but let's go tell Jake's parents the good news."
CALLIE POV
I find myself walking to Addison's office and I can hear that Mark is there. "Hey guys," I say laying down on the couch with my feet up on Marks leg.
"You should've seen it Addison. Arizona straight up told Timothy off. Honestly if she spoke to me like that. I'd be scared."
"Makes you wonder, how good she would be in bed." Addison says looking right at me.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" I chuckled.
"Come on, I'm sure you thought about it?" Mark says lifting his eyebrow up.
"No I haven't." I say defensively.
"Mark said you and her were having eye sex right in front of him and her brother."
"No I wasn't. I was just admiring her blue eyes." I insist. Who am I kidding these two know me better than anyone. "Okay, yes I've thought about it. But that's all it is. Just thoughts." I say staring at the corner of the room. "Arizona, she's different. I've never met someone who cares as much as her. She's funny and she's-"
"Hot." Mark says finishing my sentence.
"Yeah hot, really hot."
"Right, just thoughts. Sounds like you have feelings for her." Mark grinned.
"Yeah, I might." I admit softly.
"Well I think you should ask her out." Addison suggested.
"I don't know guys, I have Aiden. Who knows if she likes children?"
"Umm Callie she works with children."
"Just because you work with them doesn't mean you want your own, but I gotta go pick up Aiden. I'll see you guys later."
Secretly, I know exactly why I can't. I know how I am. And I know I could fall hard for Arizona Robbins.
Arizona POV
It's been two weeks since Jake's surgery and he has just been admitted for pain in his leg. I did a quick scan of his leg and everything looks perfect. There's no infection.
"Timmy, Jakes back." I say as I rushed into his office.
"What happened? His surgery went smoothly. The cancer can't reappear this fast. Can it?"
"Timothy let's run some test and see where we are at. Jumping conclusions won't solve anything."
He runs his hand to the back of his head. When he does this I know he's fustrated and upset. "You're right Arizona, I'll go run them, and can you read them. I don't think I can handle it. I'm sorry. I thought cured him, now I need to amputate his leg. This fucking sucks!."
I put my hand on his shoulder and give a small squeeze so he can feel my support. "I'll go check the scans, but let's not go there yet. Got it."
"Ok."
"Now take a deep breath and calm down."
Callie POV
I haven't ran into or seen Arizona in a few weeks, the last time was when she had that argument with Timothy. It's kind of refreshing seeing a surgeon with so much passion that she will go to bat against anyone even her own brother on a patients care.
So I'm taking it as a good thing that I haven't seen her, since she's on my mind almost of the time anyways. When I look at Arizona, it's like my mind turns to goo and I can't function.
My department has also been busier than usual. Thank god for Altman and Yang to ease the work load.
"Torres, you okay?" Mark asked concerned.
"No, I'm exhausted. I need to go to the X-ray room and grab a few scans. I'll see you after Mark." I say taking the corner.
I open the door to the X-ray room and I see Arizona looking at a few of her scans. She doesn't even noticed that I'm here, so I quietly walk behind her.
"Hey, Dr. Robbins." I say right behind her ear.
"Ahhhh!" Arizona jumps and grabs her chest, "Shit, you almost gave me a heartache."
"Don't worry, I know someone who knows a few things about hearts."
"I wonder who that could be?" Arizona laughed.
"I heard she's the best cardio surgeon out there." I joke.
"Yeah, and humble too." Arizona says rolling her eyes. "So I haven't seen you in while. I was starting to think you were avoiding me." Arizona admits while looking at the X-rays on the board.
"Yeah, I've been busy, and you're impossible to avoid." I say grabbing my scans. The room is quiet and a minute later. She speaks up, "Yeah I know what you mean, well I'll see you later Dr. Torres." Arizona says ripping her scans off the wall. She rushes to walk out the door. I can tell something is wrong. She called me Dr. Torres. Ever sense our talk in the park. She's been calling me by my first name. Which I will admit, I enjoy hearing it come from her mouth. Before she gets to the door, I grab her wrist and stop her. "Hey, Arizona is everything okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine...Actually no I'm not. I need to break the news to Timmy that Jake's cancer is back. Then I need to go tell his parents, that what we did didn't work and the only option now that they have is to amputate." She says quietly.
"Hey, this isn't your fault. You know that."
"He won't be able to dance Calliope. And dancing is his life. You should've seen him. He's gifted, amazing actually. When we first told him about the amputation. He begged me to bring me to the physical therapist room, so he could show me. I didn't want to of course knowing the state he was in. But he was determined. So I made Timmy do it. I just keep thinking what if I couldn't use my hands again. Growing up, I knew becoming a surgeon was my dream. What if one day I couldn't operate again? So now all I can think of is that I'm taking his dreams away." Arizona sobbed while trying to wipe her tears.
Subconsciously, I grab her hand, "Arizona, you and Timothy fought hard for him. I know I saw you two arguing in the lunch room. You did everything you could, and that's the job."
"I know, but I can't help it."
"You know they teach us in Med school, how not to care so much, we drape the patients so we don't see their faces. We do a thousand different things to care a little less. You care like crazy and I love and admire that."
The room goes quiet and Arizona turned to face me, and I can feel us both slowly inching forward, like magnets. Time feels like it doesn't exists and it feels like we are the only two people in the world. Her eyes look down at my lips and lingers back to my eyes. Arizona nods her head, silently asking me if this is okay. I nod back. I can feel her breath on my lips. She tilts her head and right when our lips are about to touch, someone opens the door, causing me and Arizona to spring apart. It's Yang.
"Dr. Torres, UNOS just called and they found a match." She says looking down at her phone oblivious to what was just going on.
"Oh, wow umm..let's go tell Mr. Dawson that we found him a match." I smile at Arizona and bolt out of there. I can't believe that we almost just kissed.
