They both slept through to the morning in Arizona's hospital bed. Callie woke first and just looked at the frail blonde next to her. All the distance and routine they had built over the last year was gone. This is the most time they had spent together in months, but Callie felt different. She didn't feel suffocated or alone like she had in the demise of their relationship. She had grown, she had changed, and while doing so she realised that she missed Arizona, her company. The extremely particular things Arizona would do every evening after work, come home, kiss Sofia, kiss Callie, have a shower, kiss Callie again, offer to help make dinner even though her cooking was and had always been shocking. She missed being a family, and didn't know how to approach Arizona about it. Penny seemed like a distant memory, although it was only 12 hours before they were in the same room together. Callie never saw them working the way her and Arizona worked. Being here, with Arizona now, she knew that she wanted her back more than ever. She'd never wanted to let her go. They had become so stuck in their life before, they both wanted different things, but Callie soon came to realise that they could have different things and still be together. She only worried now if Arizona didn't feel the same way. Arizona stirred and woke with a start, Callie shh'ed and soothed her reminding her of her whereabouts. Arizona had been holding Callie's hand all night, she couldn't bring herself to pull away.
"Good morning" Arizona croaked, adjusting her eyes to the light. "What happened to me?" A wave of pain shot through her hips and into her chest and ribs..
"You're in the ER… you remember?" Callie questioned, her brain switching to work mode, a little concerned that Arizona may have some amnesia caused by concussion. She climbed out of the bed and lifted the back of it up so Arizona was in a half seated position and pulled over the chair she had sat in most of the night a little closer to the bed. "Arizona..do you know why you're here"?
Arizona stared blankly at Callie, tears forming in her eyes, she didn't remember. "No" she shook her head and a tear fell. She stopped dead in her tracks. "Callie, where's the baby"
"What baby?" Callie was becoming more concerned.
"Sofia, where is Sofia?, is Mark looking after her" Arizona's words cut through Callie like a knife. Mark. She thinks Mark is alive. Then it dawned on her. If she thinks Mark is alive, then she can't remember the plane crash, how was Callie supposed to explain how Arizona had lost her leg if she doesn't remember it happening. It would also mean that she'd have no idea that they weren't together.
"No sweetie, she's at daycare, I'm just going to pop out for a minute but i'll be back okay, I promise" Callie left the room and once she was out of sight from Arizona's window she slumped against the wall and let out a sob. Her hands trembled as she Called Amelia.
"Hello' Amelia answered, clearly the call had woken her.
"Amelia I.. I need you to come to the hospital now" Callie cried out.
"Callie, what's happened?" Becoming aware of Callie's tone Amelia sat up in bed.
"It's Arizona" The only words Callie could muster before letting out another heart wrenching sob.
"I'm on my way" Amelia hung up the call and Callie made her way to the nearest bathroom. She looked at herself in the mirror, dark circles under her eyes and a blotchy red face. She couldn't go back to Arizona looking like this. She splashed some cold water on her face and composed herself. Maybe the amnesia would be short term, a temporary affect.
She took a slow walk back to Arizona's room but before she could get there she saw Owen and Amelia coming towards her. "Callie, where's Arizona what's wrong" Amelia spoke, still moving towards her.
"She.. she was hit by a car.. after th..the party and .. and she.. she doesn't remember, she asked me if Sofia was with Mark" Callie stuttered her words as the shock on Amelia's face grew.
"Okay, I'll meet you in her room in 2 minutes," Amelia said, rushing off to her office to grab some supplies for a neuro exam.
Callie walked back to Arizona's room and found her just staring blankly at the door. Callie feared for any questions. "Hey, I'm back" Callie said softly walking back over to her chair, Arizona never moved. A few moments later, the door opened again, it was Amelia, Callie met her with a half smile.
"Good morning Arizona, how are you feeling?" Amelia started off.
Arizona looked at her with a screwed up face, trying to decipher how she knew the woman. "Amelia" she spoke "I haven't seen you since Hopkins" this caused concern for both Callie and Amelia, she had seen her last night.
"How are you feeling?" Amelia repeated the question.
"I'm not sure, my head hurts a lot, and my hips and ribs" Arizona listed.
"Do you remember what happened, how you got here?" Arizona shook her head, Callie had already tried that one. "Okay not to worry for now, can you tell me the date?"
"It's Wednesday, the 12th of October, 2011" Arizona spoke clear as day. Both Callie and Amelia's hearts sank. Callie pushed down the urge to spit the bile that was rising in her chest. Nothing about the date was correct apart from the month. It was 2015. Arizona noticed the rising fear on both their faces. "Di-did I say something wrong" she looked at Callie with apologetic eyes. Callie took her hand.
"No Arizona you're doing just fine, do you mind if I look in your eyes with my light?" Amelia moved closer and checked her pupils, equal and reactive, "okay you're done for the moment, I'm just going to borrow Callie for a moment" Amelia smiled and gestured to Callie to follow her outside.
"Amelia this is bad, she's living 4 years in the past" Callie was panicking.
"Callie, don't work yourself up, you need to go home. Change, bring in some things for Arizona that might jog her memory, we need to be careful. We don't want to overwhelm her but we do need to start with 1 thing. You need to tell her about the plane Callie, she's going to want to get up soon" Callie nodded and made her way to the exit, barely holding it together as she got into her car to drive back to her apartment.
She had a quick shower and changed into some comfortable clothes. She picked out a few photos and Sofia's teddy bear in hopes that seeing how worn the bear was would bring to attention that their daughter was 4 years old and not a tiny baby any more.
She didn't want to be away from Arizona for too long so she quickly ate a sandwich and made her way back to the hospital. Arizona was sleeping when she arrived and part of her prayed that she would wake up and have all her memories back. Callie's prayers came crashing down rather soon.
